LD34 December 11–14, 2015

In Again

Throwing my hat in the ring again, hoping to finish this time (second time’s a charm maybe?).  Just going to try not to get bogged down with graphics and keep it minimalist until the code is done.  Using Phaser, Aseprite, BFXR.  Keeping it simple.

Update on tools

As some of you might know, I have been working on my own 3D JavaScript library for HTML5 Canvas (without WebGL). It works, so that’s great! Unfortunately, the fps can’t get over 30. So, for this Ludum Dare, I will be making a 2D game instead of a 3D one.

This was just a little update, I hope all of you guys are going to have an amazing Ludum Dare this weekend! (I’m extremely hyped, so I will have a great one for sure 😉 )

i’m in

For my third participation.
I will use:

Unity, Qubicle, photoshop and lots of coffee

Good luck everyone

In For the Second Time

I had a whole plan of how I would be better prepared for my next LD. Yeah, that didn’t happen. Still can’t wait. I guess we will see if I learned from all of my rookie mistakes last time. Can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Will probably go with GameMaker again.

I’m in

Hey,

It’s my first LD.

I’m going to use: C++ with SFML, Paint.NET,..

Good luck everyone!

I am in (The Jam)

I am in for the first time. Tools: Unity3D (with Visual Studio), Audacity, Gimp.

Good luck and have fun to everyone!

CHALLENGE TIME: How many final-round themes can you find in this picture?

ld34

First person to get them all, I’ll play your game first. Update: Prizes go to Viking Games and Evannex!

[ctrl+c “I’m in”] [ctrl+v] I’m in

So I guess I’m in for like the 7th time or something. I’m starting to feel old haha. It’s still unclear what exactly I’ll be doing, as I may do the jam with one of my friends. If I go solo, I’ll be tinkering with:

Engine: Game Maker: Studio

Graphics: paint.NET

Sounds: sfxr & Mario Paint (Not kidding, using it to create basic tracks to then convert to a midi file. Then I’m going to throw said midi through some programs and sound fonts to hopefully make decent music!)

Anyways I hope you all have a wonderful dare! Remember to vote for two buttons!

I’m in! (2 years in a row!)

I’m in for my 7th round of Ludum Dare! My first compo was LD28 back in 2013, and I haven’t missed a single one since. LD34 will be two years from my first Ludum Dare (and my first time ever releasing a game), so I’m going to try and fill this compo’s game with references to kittens all the other games I’ve submitted.

Previous games:

CHOOSE W1SELY – #51 Theme, #109 Overall
Neath: Surf Ace – #97 Humor, #693 Overall
Two Worlds – #223 Audio, #912 Overall
snowlr – #105 Humor, #546 Overall
Jelly Fighter – #202 Humor, #787 Overall
Antimon – #103 Audio, #151 Overall

Likely tools this time around:

Engine: Multimedia Fusion 2
Graphics: Photoshop
Sound: Bfxr
Music: Fake Music Generator for music, and MuseScore for modifying it

Enter cliché “I’m in” title here

Lets do this! Again.

Going to use LibGDX with Artemis-odb framework and maybe Kotlin? Sounds fun! And usual suspects for assets.

GLHF!

Where does Jukedeck fit into LD

Facts:

There is Jukedeck: https://www.jukedeck.com

It makes music based on genre, mood, speed and a rudimentary instrument choice. The music is quite good for automatically composed music. The authors of the site claim the copyright of the tracks. There is a license model, which grants you either usage rights (up to 5 downloads per month for free for individuals/small businesses) or transfers copyright to you (expensive).

Question:

Is it just a tool or is it automated creation? Who creates the music? Is it suited for Compo?

Discuss!

(My opinion is below the fold)

I think it is not suited for Compo, since it is more than a tool. The options are simple and most of the actual creation lies in the algorithm/AI. Saying “Hey, make a fast dark rock track with traditional instruments” is not a creative act. Compo requires everything made by you, so I think Jukedeck is out.

On the more philosophical aspect: I do not think this AI i quite advanced enough to be a creator in it’s own right, so the programmers who wrote and trained it are the real creators here. Although I think we are approaching the point of “artificial persons” quite fast, we are not there, yet.

I still think it is a great tool and fantastic if you need some placeholder music to create a mood without investing much time into composing and recording.

I think (read: hope) that using it is within the compo rules; content generators are allowed and a similar (albeit outdated) program is listed right on the tools page (autotracker)

I don’t think it’s an LD problem.. the problem is more, what will the juke guys say, if you download the song once, and then redistribute it to everybody playing your game?

The “I’m in” post

First LD, with a very first game. Never finished one besides the tutorial projects.

Using Unity…
…and kinda nervous…

Dont worry, although I am still very much a beginner too, I remember my first LD(LD29). I was watching a livestream and had done some tutorials, i hadn’t actually developed a game to completion or really had other people play it.

Whoa, thanks for the support!

I feel more confident now =)

I am in

This time I am not going to fuck up and redo everything on the end of the third day, I am going to stick with my trash until the end.

Traditional “I’m in post”

Well, I should be in again (assuming life doesn’t get in the way). As usual, I’ll use:

  • Chien2D (experimental v3), my trusty 10 year old game programming library 😉
  • C++
  • Code::blocks + gCC + Mingw32 to cross compile Windows binaries
  • Gimp
  • Tiled
  • bfxr
  • Punk’o’matic
  • Audacity
  • The usual QA folks (my kids and close friends)
  • Linux, of course! :)

So, go ahead and vote on a programmer-mind friendly theme for this round ;).

Obligatory “I’m in”

Well, let’s say “we’re in” this time. This is my second Ludum Dare, the last one being my first and I am so exited going in for another round!

So, this time I infected two of my friends with the idea of creating something fun over the course of a weekend and they wanted to join. Last time I didn’t finish my game but I learned a lot in the process. Now it is time to do it properly!

I don’t know what we’ll be using, probably Unity.

Let’s hope for an inspiring theme, happy crafting everyone!

Lets do this

this I my first ludum dare and I’m using C# with Unity and Pyxel Edit

Im in LD34!

Well LD33 was my first game jam but I feel like I did pretty well with my entry Bunny Inferno so I’m going into into LD34 with anxious anticipation, especially watching and participating in the theme voting.

Since this is my second LD and I didn’t really introduce myself my first time I thought I’d make an opportunity to do so. My name is Stanley/Stan, I’m 25, and I’ve been programming for about 12 years. I found Game Maker 4 when I was 11 and quickly decided game development is what I wanted to do. Soon after that I then jumped head first into c/c++ for quite a while until exploring java, c#, python and here more recently(1-2 years) I’ve been working with html5/js, which has become my favorite environment to work in. But last LD I chose to use Game Maker: Studio on a whim, which I hadn’t even looked at since I was 12, and since then I’ve been taking a break from the web platform and having fun messing around with GM:S and seeing what it can do.

I’ve also dabbled in content creation having some experience in traditional art; 3d modelling, texturing, 2d sprites, writing, music, etc. I enjoy doing a bit of everything. =)
My mainly used applications would be Blender, Paint.NET, MS Paint(shhh), Milky Tracker and/or FL Studio. Sometimes Audacity… depending on how sane I am that day.

As far as the compo I think, depending on the theme, I may work with either Game Maker: Studio or html5/js. But I guess we will have to see!

Good luck everyone and have fun!

Discussion: Participation outside North (and South) America

Hey folks.

As many of you know, Ludum Dare is an international event. About half of us are in the US and Canada (mostly US), but the other half is elsewhere in the world. Everything we do is online, and no matter where you are in the world, what we do happens simultaneously for everyone.

I live in Canada (London Ontario), so when I’m scheduling Ludum Dare, I do have a bias for my continent (North America). As I see it, Ludum Dare events start on Friday’s at 9 PM Eastern Time, but what that also means is they start on Friday at 6 PM Pacific Time. The reason for this time is that a majority of people in North America are out of school or out of work between the hours of 5 PM and 6 PM. Again, for me it’s 9 PM in the evening, and by the time I get things wrapped, I can often get to sleep by midnight (which I imagine is normal for most people).

Unfortunately for our friends in Europe (the largest part of that other half of participants), this means Ludum Dare starts anywhere +/- 2 AM (02:00). For some it’s 1 AM, but for others it’s as bad as 4 AM or 5 AM. Beyond a certain point you may as well just wake up early, but unfortunately our friends in Europe are right in that worst case spot.

This is something I haven’t been able to come up with a good solution to.

Global Game Jam works around this by giving organizers the theme ahead of time. This works as GGJ is about being there in person, and you’re mainly being social with those physically around you.

We can’t do that.

Most people that do Ludum Dare do it from home. It would be unfair to give themes to Gatherings and not everyone in the same timezone. We’re also extremely internet social (#LDJAM), with a huge presence on Twitter. And as we get more of the new website online, we’ll be doing even more and more social things.

I get many requests from hosts of gatherings to get the theme early, but I can’t think of a way to share the theme early in a fair way.

So that’s my dilemma.

If we start sooner, people on the west coast of are still at work and school. If we give the theme early to some people, it isn’t fair for others. I don’t like the idea of segregating parts of the community (i.e. different submission times for different timezones).

The strictness of the time limit, 48 and 72 hours, is important to a lot of people. The fact that we have a solo-only event is important to a lot of people. The fact that one of our events requires source code is important to a lot of people.

I have a few too many constraints to deal with, to make it perfect for everyone. :)
