MiniLD #68 – Work in Progress

Ninja Man vs The Green Sticks of Doom IV (Save the Battery Hens) will be a homage to the games I thought of making, tried to make, and did make during my childhood. With a nod to some of the game I enjoyed playing as well.

Below is a work in progress screenshot. I don’t have a lot of time so I’ll see how far I get but I’ll finish a couple of screens at least.

minLD #68 Work in Progress

The games:

Save the Battery Hens: Although I only ever played the demo and read the reviews I was deeply infatuated with Creatures on the Commodore 64. Save the Battery Hens was going to be my take on the torture screens from the game. 10 PRINT ‘HELLO!’ 20 GOTO 10 wasn’t quite going to get me there though. So drawings and dreams was as far as it got.

Ninja Man vs The Green Sticks of Doom: Was a series of games I attempted to make that had increasingly sophisticated graphics and increasingly nonfunctional game play. The first outing was an ASCII effort in GW Basic. My last attempt (21 years ago) and the third in the series was written in QuickBasic with the help of a VisualBasic utility I wrote to turn .ico files into .txt files that I would then render pixel by pixel in QuickBasic.

Spy: Was an ASCII action puzzle game written in QuickBasic that had six fully playable levels loaded from text files. It most closely resembles the MiniLD #68 entry I’m working on.

Good luck everyone. Looking forward to seeing all your games.

Very cool! I love the idea of picking up games you made or wanted to make as child and now make them with a fresh perspective and a skillset you gathered over the years …

Was “Save the Battery Hens” actually the reason you started making games?

Made a game. (not ludum dare!)

I made a platformer, I hope ya’ll will have fun with it.

Cool!

Since I already played through it, I thought I could write a tiny review. I won’t talk about aesthetics, as graphics and sound can always be added/improved upon.

The controls felt great, but the player moves and falls a bit too fast. Also the weapon felt quite underwhelming, especially since the projectiles move slower than the player. Either increase bullet speed or decrease player speed. Or you could try to add the current player velocity to the projectile, but this may lead to wonky results, use with caution.

The game introduced new content along the way, and mixed them up so it stayed interesting, the length wasn’t dragged out, it felt just right for the amount of content present.

The final boss shouldn’t spawn enemies without giving the player time to react (confused me the first time, didn’t know why I died exactly), maybe a small animation where enemies will spawn to give the player time to avoid them could help.

Also the control instructions should be in the game instead of you having to write them separately with your post. Especially since the double jump wasn’t mentioned anywhere. It’s such a tiny thing, but helps immensely to make it feel more complete and prevents players from getting stuck.

Thanks for the feedback, will improve game.

I played and beat the game, so I guess I’ll write a review.

Movement felt good, but I couldn’t wrap my head around the gun shooting when I released the mouse. You want it to feel responsive, so it should always happen when you press the mouse. There was also some minor issues with the bullet not being centered. Other than that, you should add a bit of randomness to the enemy aiming and walking, because they’re ridiculously accurate right now. You should also maybe touch up the boss fight, it was very underwhelming. Obviously art and graphics can be tweaked later, but that boss sprite tho… that boss sprite…

Overall it was an enjoyable experience.

Haha, sure, BTW the boss sprite is just the first image you find when you google “leviathon”.

Need Idea

I’ve been kicking to program for a while and need a simple idea to work on. Think of it as a Ludum Dare that is only done by me, not my idea, and does not have a time limit. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

How about a room organizer? sounds silly but let me explain. A kid has to clean his room before bed time. Not just because his parents said so but because if he doesn’t monsters come out and when he runs to go to bed if there is stuff on the floor it slows him down. the cleaner the room the less likely the kid will get eaten by the monsters when its dark and he rushes to his bed!

Obstruction, a game by Toasted Games!

Hey all, my name is Ben and I’m a member of a team of three friends that we call Toasted Games! If you haven’t heard about us before, here’s our info. Anyway, the reason I made this post was because I made a huge post on our website about my personal creation, Obstruction! Obstruction is a game about creating courses and maneuvering through them, and sharing those courses with your friends! The game will likely be released this year, and we’d love it if you could check it out. If you’re interested, start by reading the post I just made!

We hope to see you around! ^_^

3 more days for MiniLD 68!

Hello everybody!

There are 3 more days to submit a game to MiniLD 68.
Finish up your entries and give some of the other games a try, which were submitted to the jam.

Of course you can also still join the jam, if you want! :)
I’m gonna wrap up things when the gamejam has ended.
There will be no “big” Ludum Dare rating happening, since this is a Mini Ludum Dare.
I rather want to round up all the games and what I like about each one in an article or little video.
If you have any suggestions for wrapping things up, feel free to let me know :)

My new game : Super Tretoos

screen02
Hey guys.

The link : just here
I wanted to make a game with the theme of ludum dare #67, so I made this. It’s a mix between “Snake” and my last game “Tretoos”.
You have to pick block, align them, and finally eat them with the SNAKE mode (by pressing spacebar).

It was created with Typescript and Phaser, that’s my second game with these, and I’m starting to understand the tools.

Thank you for leaving comments, feelings or bugs.
Enjoy :)

Neat. Maybe you could add special blocks, maybe glowing (and call them something creative and original… like… Glowing Blocks! :P), that let you keep moving the snake even if you go to a block of other color (or even no block at all). That would add to the strategy and “sustainability”, IYKWIM.

“Loading…” – the game for people who are into dwarfs and poops and that stuff

Hi Darians!

I’d like to introduce to you my first non-LudumDare game. It’s called “Loading…”

http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.stanov.loading

ScreenshotPhone1

There is also a design document I made before I started to code (SPOILER ALERT, DON’T READ BEFORE PLAYING THE GAME!):

https://github.com/StaNov/LoadingGame/wiki

I’d be grateful for all kinds of feedback or emotions the game made in you :)

Have fun!

Save The Chickens!

I’ve just finished my entry for MiniLD #68:

Ninja Man vs The Green Sticks of Doom IV (Save the Battery Hens) .

Ninja Man vs The Green Sticks of Doom

A light-hearted game about the horrors of factory farming, featuring an impressive array of 16 full colour sprites and 2 sound effects.

Stop browsing and… Play The Game

Rookie here. What programming language should I use? Also, any general advice?

I never know how to start these kinds of posts, so I’m going to skip any kind of “Hi, I’m new” introduction and ask what I’ve been wondering. What programming language should I use for LDs?

I’ve heard that C++’s capabilities are best for 3D games, but say I just wanted to make a simple 2D platformer for my first LD. Does programming language still matter? I’m fairly experienced in both Java and C++. I also know some Python.

Lastly, is there any other kind of general advice you could give for a newcomer? Looking through posts from old LDs, the rules page and the list of tools all give me feelings on how all this works, but if anyone could give me tips on how making an LD game is actually done would be awesome too.

Thanks in advance!

It really depends on what you’re most comfortable with. Python has Pygame, C++ has SFML and SDL, Java has LibGDX and the built-in Java2D. Choose the one you’re strongest with, and the one you will be able to use the quickest. However, if you want the most people to play your game, you should probably target the web, i.e. LibGDX HTML5, or just plain Javascript. You can get C++ and Python to work on the web, but its more efficient just to write it in HTML5 or Flash.

If you go with java use LWJGL. I’ve done all my opengl learning with it even following C++ tutorials and have been fine. If you want to target web you might go with LWJGL2 which seems to have better applet support than LWJGL3.

Go with what you’re most fluent with. If you haven’t done games in those languages, set aside some time in the next two months to experiment. (A fraction of) 72 hours really is not a lot of time for coding, and you don’t want to waste it all wrestling with setting up your environment.

I have used Java Swing everytime. It is nice and simple.

These kinds of questions are usually tough to answer with, because we don’t know what your experience is, not exactly with games but in general programming. Since I don’t actually know where your skills are, I recommend to go with the language that you like and have good experience with.

You should really just look into Unity…🤔

Personally I’d use python if you’re new to game programming with they PyGame library. I have experience with that and java game development in 2D and pyGame seams like it’d be easier to pickup. If that doesn’t look interesting go with the language you’re most familiar in, you can make games in just about anything now-a-days.

MiniLD #68 – Supermarket Running(WIP)

Supermarket Running is a game based on how I liked to drive a supermarket car on my childhood.

It’s a very simple minigame. Here’s a screenshot of the progress until now.

Lessons learned from Second Hand – our Ludum Dare #35 entry

So yeah, I’m seriously late with this postmortem but I hear late is better than never so here it is. If you want to know what we learned while building Second Hand, head on over to Gamasutra to read our Lessons from the Blitz.

LD #35 was Team Rikodu’s first Ludum Dare and it was awesome. In fact, it was what made Team Rikodu what it is today. We liked Second Hand so much that we continued working on it and will be posting it on Greenlight soon.

To wrap up I just wanted to say THANKS to the entire Ludum Dare community! It was great to be a part of this gathering of people who love games and game development. You guys inspired us with all the ideas and gave us energy so THANK YOU.
