LD 38 April 21–24, 2017

That was great!

I couldn't finish the project in time, mostly because I wasted too much time for looking for interesting idea but still I'm glad I participated. It was fun ,I learned something and seeing all those incredibly creative people inspired me to work harder and learn more. Good luck to everyone who's still fighting with their projects.

Almost finished!

Our game is almost completed. Graphics are done, gameplay features all work, we have a narrative finally, and all we're waiting on is to finish the audio. We can't let the bunny down now!!

Hi everybody :ant: Someone are drowning in coffee too? We look forward to finish this and show to everyone our game.

New buildings!

PICO-8_1.png

I've got a bit of content in the game now, in it's current state you can build houses, sawmills and farms. These make resources and keep your people happy.

The people also have basic behaviours, going home to sleep when they are tired and getting food when they are hungry.

You can play it on the Pico-8 BBS here

A Last Look Back

We may’ve been told that this old site is held together by duct-tape, COBOL, raw willpower and magical elves way past their retirement age. It’s only right that things get replaced so now and then. The new site is looking good too! Markdown is a nice way to write posts, etc., etc.

… but it still feels a bit wrong to let it pass without comment.
So here I am, commenting.

Well, that’s a bit heavy. All I wanted to was leave a link between my old and new user accounts, since the migration may take a while, and I’ve opted for a new user name on the new site (still the same email, so it’ll get linked eventually…)

So, I’m @remco on the new site. My current game (for LD#38) is ‘liftoff’. And, just like the first game I posted on this site, it has an unintentionally confusing help screen 😉

Restless - Last Rush

IMGem24042017/em200405_0.png

The good new is that I finally had a decent idea for the jam on the last day. The bad news is that it's the last day. I had to be FAST and throw away a lot of cool stuff and rush through the level design (you're looking at the only good part here).

I can still ship something, but it wont be to my full satisfaction this time. I guess all those years have made me less efficient at this.

Still a few hours left, I'll try to cram as many things as possible before the end. Until then.

Retro Rabbit Away!

It's 4:41 a.m. here in Melbourne and we finally finished up our game. This is the first Ludum Dare that we have ever joined and I am pleased with the final results.

RETRORABBITCOVERsmall.png

We happily present Retro Rabbit, a game where you play as a bunny trying to save her world from deflating! Eat carrots, score points and tell me your high score! (Mine was around the 90,000 mark!)

Finally Done !

First Game Jam for my two teammates, and first time for me doing a ludum dare with a team! What a great experience!

We worked on Grall Axy, that you can download and try RIGHT NOW, if you wish so, and I invite you do to so!

In Grall Axy you are a robot who's planet is threatened by the arrival of numerous comets. Destroy the comets and survive as long as you can!

Testing gameplay ...have we gone a bit too far? *^___^*

Ok, the background look so real...@jabba music made us laugh our heads off the first time we heard it. It doesn't show in this clip but you have to shoot a lot with your horn to make it through the crowd!

Oh god crunch time

I REAAALLLY wish I didn't miss those 11 hours, as I'm DESPERATELY needing them now. My game is going to have to be incredibly truncated and basically more like a shareware demo (sort of fitting) in order for it to fit the second deadline...

But at least I've been making progress... ss+(2017-04-25+at+04.49.37)[1].png

I couldnt finish my project

Due to some unfortunate events i couldnt work on my project. I hope i will participate in the next jam.

My game is pretty much done

I'm just trying to make a build to check if anything's messed up. Mainly worried about the UI not scaling properly etc.

As is always the case with a jam, we didn't deliver the vision, but we delivered!

We're going to keep tinkering with this game because we've had so much fun, and have a lot more ideas (and actual designs) that we want to try implementing.

Use your instincts to make your way back home through the wastelands. Follow the secure path that is indicated by a sound!

*Listen carefully: *

  • Major chord (happy and simple sounding chord) ==> You are on the right way! Walk on!

  • Minor chord (sad, or 'serious' sounding chord) ==> You have left the secure path. Get back on the secure path!

Proceed carefully:

  • Only take small steps.

  • Stop and change direction as soon as you can hear a minor chord.

My Game

You can play it in browser, I'm awaiting opinions :D

We're Wrapping Up Pretty Soon! :o

ui_DesktopIcon.png

So... Our team has very little time left... and there were a lot of bugs a lot of things. It's just that thing where fixing/adding one thing for some strange/random reason breaks something completely unrelated to it. D:

We can still make the game on time- but we had to take away some of the very cool mechanics we had planned and had to simplify the game a lot.

Regardless- This will still be a very cool Game for a Game Jam for us! And I believe we learned HEAPS OF STUFF while making this!

Exporter_02.png The game will be up soon! So here are the last batch of 2D assets needed for the game. :D

Haven - The Small World

A short adventure game about post apocalyptic futuristic structure, where people society have to live after the lack of oxygen in earth's atmosphere.

Men and women have to live separately, and it is very hard for both genders to meet each other. So, YOU are trying to get the permission to the place, where you would be able to meet your lovely wife.

Tittle, levels, polish and more

2017-04-24_21-44-24.gif

With only 5 hours to go we are going in to the last sprint. We have made about 8 levels and ar now adding a way to tutorialize the game.

We have also decided on a name for the game!

obelisk.png

And we are laughing with the worst jokes ever... Oh how it is fun.

Anyway back to fixing bugs 🐛

And adding animation to things

Final Stretch

At this point we're just adding levels and working on polishing up the mechanics.

I just added the in game help screen: Help Screen.PNG

Unfortunately, after doing some testing, it looks like the CRT effect doesn't work well in WebGL. We're aiming to have Windows and Linux desktop versions by the end of the Jam. If we can find the time to port to Mac and/or fix the WebGL version post Jam, we will.

New update - looking like a game now

Here's a couple of screen shots (beauty pics) showing the human heading to the crawler, and the viral worm on the attack. You can also shoot the worms with the auto cannon. Objective is collect all the humans, avoid being squashed by the viral worms, so everyone can get enlarged back to normal size.

Big.JPGHumansPickup.JPGHumansPickup2.JPGShoot.JPG

Grounded Quest sorta kinda done.

I had to cut so many corners. But I guess I'm doing fine for my first ever jam. I feel like I learned a lot about time management. And I still have a few hours to polish stuff.

Alpha003.jpg

This will be great

Doing the final touches and than I'm done ;D

Nukeball

Our little world is on the edge of a third world war, the power to launch the NUKES is in the hands of 2 megalomaniac lunatics, and we mere deadly, are left to watch this devastating game. But now you have the unique opportunity in life to play NukeBall as one of the two leaders!

HTML5 port now available

To submit quickly, I initially only made a Windows version of my game (porting is allowed after the deadline). I now also made the HTML5 version, so it's a bit easier to start playing the game. You can play it on itch.io or GameJolt.

Just in time!

Despite my impending wedding (on Saturday, April 29th) and having other obligations this weekend, I was able to make something not too shabby. First Ludum Dare I've completed in years, so I'm quite happy!

I think I'll actually add some more features to this game post-compo (for my own portfolio). It has some potential.

Problems publishing game

Hey! Anyone had problems publishing games created on the first day? I can't seem to edit anything (name's stuck at "Title") and don't even have the edit label...

Last steps

Hi all, we are on our last steps doing our game. Great fun!

post mortem

So, it's been a while since I've participated in a LD, life just seems to get in the way.. This time I decided to put aside some hours to do something and I'm really glad I did! Sure, I didn't get a lot done, but I also didn't have any high ambitions, if I could make something I'd enjoy playing for a few minutes myself, I'd be happy. I've played for some hours now, it's somehow intriguing, and I can't find out why.. Is it just because it's my own creation? I've made games before and never enjoyed them as much as this one (OSGG excepted, that's till my favorite). Anyway, this is turning into a rant, so.. back on track we must!

What went well

I managed to turn 200 lines of boiler place C++ into a working and subjectively entertaining game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/bounceball) in about 6 hours. I was just super lucky that the right idea popped into my head when it did. I didn't struggle with stability issues or performance. The game actually plays well.

What went bad

I did have the chance to set aside more time than I did, and clearly missed out on creating something even better. Maybe the fear that I'd bite of more than I can chew held me back. I know how quickly flipping a single bit can eat half a day, if it's the wrong bit you're trying to flip... No bits stuck, I could have done a lot more. I didn't have a build system set up, so I'm asking Linux users (usually, that's me, but I'm stuck with a Windows laptop because long story) to compile them selves, I know they can, they're clever and I inclded a build script, so that's as good as a binary release anyway. But yeah, I'd have liked to engange my CI installation, but it's not quite setup to handle it at the moment. Next time, hopefully, I have a docker image prepared so that I can cross compile for all the platforms I want to support (sorry OSX, but I've yet to find a nice way to cross-compile from Linux to OSX, you'll still need to build from source, that's what you get for chosing to live in a walled garden).

What I've learned

That sometimes, a lot can spring from a little, that adding just one idea at a time can work much better than a design document.

The future

I think I'm actually going to put some time into morphing my entry into a full game, and I'll demand! money for it! That's a first too.

Web Build Added

Cover.png

Just uploaded a WebGL version of my game, Five Minute Fire Fight. It's UnityGL, so it's a little buggy (takes it a while after loading to get up to speed, but seems ok other than that). Anyway, if you haven't played yet, nows the time!

All Done

screen1.png Just submitted my first game jam game. I was pretty much done in time for the compo but I broke the rules on using existing assets(Lunar Module model from NASA) so I spend today doing some textures and some better lighting.
It was a lot of fun! I usually have a tough time finishing projects, so the "pressure" of being in the competition really helped force myself to stay focused and actually finish something. Hopefully next time I'll have the entire weekend free and I'll be able to get something valid done for the compo.

Yeah, we finally did it.

Our Game is live.

This time totally in Time but our feelings and opinions are quite mixed.

Enjoy our game, and leave some comments for us to improve our next game.

Bad Ludum Dare Experiences

:skull:

This was meant to be my second LudumDare. This time i already felt that im not on the LD-Hype-train. So i started with a friend and we started getting some ideas while voice chatting. We got one great idea, but after a try came to the conclusion that the mecanics are to complicated for our skills with the Unity-Engine. Because this was our main idea it was hard to find a new idea. After a short break we just started with the next fun idea, but after some working-hours on this second idea it got clear, that it was not fun. The gameplay was not very nice and it over all was not fun for us. I mean a LudumDare is hard in some kind. But it is meant to be a great experience. At this point we decided together to stop working.

With a game that did not work yet.

It was a hard decision and i didn't felt great after it. I just wanted to share this experience. I'm sure this happens to some people as well but when you quit you won't come back to write a post right? :D

:nerd:

I hope you all had much fun and made it. My respect it can be hard! Greetings from Germany, somebody

Last few hours

Alright, haven't gotten around to posting any blogs so far, so will type one out now! This is my second Ludum Dare Jam, although I don't have my handy dandy special programmer this time around, so it's just been me! Since I'm more comfortable with painting, I'm going with making a visual novel with the theme. Got the game all set up and ready to play, just need to give it a new coat of paint and add on bells and whistles. Currently turning things like this roomwindow.jpg

into this! roomwindow.jpg

Will see how far I'll get!

Land Ahoy! released!

LandAhoy1.png

Well folks, that's it for me! The game is done and uploaded. Get it from here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/land-ahoy

This has been super fun and I am quite happy with the game even though I had to drop many features I wanted to include (such as pirates, sea monsters, multiple levels and sounds). Also, the game could have used some extra balancing/tweaking since the gameplay is a bit bouncy at times. Next time I'll try to bring someone to do the art so I can concentrate on programming/design. Should be good!

Big thanks to the LD people and all of the very friendly developers I have met here! See you next time!

test

The final stretch!

ld38-day3-compressed.gif

We're getting close! Lots of finishing touches and then a frantic set of play-throughs for tuning purposes. We're pretty happy with the level of polish that the team has pulled off, but there's always more to do. Sorry about the gif quality, we don't have a good setup for recording good gifs that aren't huge at the moment.

Small Atomic World War

This is my second Ludum Dare and also my second game ever. First time I make a 3D game, and first time I have to program a (very) basic IA. I learnt so much in that process that my brain might explode in the next few hours !

That was extremely painful AND fun at the same time ! But I'm quite proud of the result. It might run a little slow on low-end computers as I absolutely didn't have the time to profile and optimize my code. Also, the IA is basic and the game would probably be much funnier with a multiplayer mode.

I hope you enjoy it !

2017-04-24 09-28-36.jpg

War is raging among the atoms.

They have discovered the means of producing gamma rays of such intensity that it can tear apart protons and neutrons from their nucleus. They are now able to transmute themselves into other atoms.

Each Proton collected allows your atom to level up.

Neutrons can be transformed into useful powerups :

menu.jpg

Reach level 109 to become the biggest atom ever discovered.

But beware: bigger atoms lose particles far more easily and are much less maneuverable than smaller ones.

Small Atomic World War is a top-down shooter in which you play an atom trying to get bigger.

Achievement Get! is out!

Okay. It's somewhat rushed, but I managed to make something for the Jam!

Achievement Get! is my first game for Ludum Dare, so I hope you try it out!
It's a game where you get 24 different achievements. You know.
Link to game.

Unfortunatelly we are out

So it looks like we took a little bit big bite. Goint to RTS wasn't the best idea. We got pretty far, and I am quite sure that we could already realease it as a walking simulator on Steam early access . 8tWR.png We have some MAJOR features like: - placing buildings - moving units - killing units - spawning units

pe1E.pngedxZ.png Then there are some new features like cutting trees and tress (:anguished:), which are buggy and need either rework, or fix.

And the newest things partially broke building placement, plus we got caught in multiplayer (which wasn't even programmed) and pretty much untested matchmaking. bMAlp.png

But hey, at least we had a great time, we figured what we are capable to do in a such short time period. We would like to continue development of the game and who knows maybe, it'll get good and popular, but only time will tell. But yeah we're out.

Will you give in..

..to demands of this shady figure?

So yeah, we took the road on saturday early evening to the abandoned abbey ! Because we are working on a point-and-click / escape game !

We discovered this giant playground and played with candles for almost 5 hours!

Now we are back home, tired but happy ! Only few hours left.

Well I guess not this time

Thought I could made it this LD. Started on the second day, progressed today but got a little bit messy code and annoying bugs, also missing features and mechanics. So I am getting out(i dont think i will make everything work fine with the remaining time).

Had a great time, learned some new stuff and tried new stuff. Hope i will make it to the end next time. Good luck for those who still in the race and congrats those who made it to the finish line.

p.s sorry for grammar mistakes, english isnt my mother language. p.p.s the bug wasnt a bug, the code works as planned (silly me). But i still have a lot to do and will not finish with the remaining time.

DONE but i dont know where to share game ?

I added to itch.io and itch.io’s link to new site as “my game” . is it enough  ?????

Hi everyone,

I'm a hobby Unity coder and this is my first jam. I've really enjoyed my time making this game, super rush rush but got there in the end :D

I opt-out of sound as I haven't added any, sorry :(

My wonderful wife @alisoncox provided me with all the art and I've added basic animations within Unity.

WebGL: http://creativeox.co.uk/cutopia/

Windows build: http://creativeox.co.uk/cutopia/Cutopia-Windows.zip

Linux build: http://creativeox.co.uk/cutopia/Cutopia-Linux.zip

Mac build: http://creativeox.co.uk/cutopia/Cutopia-Mac.zip

Move with arrows keys or "A" & "D", fire with "Space" or mouse click. Controller also supported" Fullscreen button bottom right for full experience.

Enjoy :)

We did it!

We did it! We completed out LDJAM despite my teammate being on the literal opposite end of the world. Im in South Africa and he is in Australia, working with such drastically different timezones made from some interesting challenges, but i am VERY happy with the results!

Check out you game if your in the mood for some cheeky fun! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/freedumb/

Finally done!

So I've finally finished, and with uploading and submitting out of the way I can finally relax and begin the ever important step of dissecting my approach, mentality and mistakes made during the Jam.

Last Jam I learned a lot about time management, three days is not a lot of time when you have to program AND create game assets and so I am VERY glad I decided to create a lot of the data structure and boiler plate code a week before hand, this code helped a great deal in giving some organisation to the mess that was thrown in during the compo.

Lessons learned this time around are one, UI based, whilst creating my entry I had no idea what or where anything I made for the user to see needed to be placed, and this lead to a large delay that could be worked on. And two, despite me trying to cut back on the scope of my game I have still opted to create a game that was a tad too unrealistic, "Aliens vs Rng" is a game that uses Randomly generated Dialog for it's humor and as such needs a large library of text to call upon so the player doesn't quickly exhaust all of his options, which is exactly what will happen in my game as I was only able to put in three complete dialog trees which will entertain for all of 10 seconds.

Well I hope others did better than myself and take the time to reflect and improve further, Best of luck.
