My first ludumdare entry : _Save_

Hi,I made a small game with simple 1-bit graphics in 15 hours for the compo. It was fun and frustrating(bugs) at the same time, but overall I enjoyed enjoyed making the game. Have a look at the game....

Looks like the idea of a small plane that you put things in was a pretty common one. See our twist on it!

Screen2.png

Follow Ayel, a minor goddess, while she tries to prove her worth to the other gods. Play around and change a plane your very own, and watch as it evolves and changes itself!

Insect Attack

Talk about crunching time, with about 6 hours total making this game (many hours spent on another that I trashed) I came up with this shooter. Nothing original. Planned to add additional enemy types, bonuses, and other weapon types such as a bug bomb. Might add those things later just to polish it up a bit after the voting ends. Certainly going to have a few bugs in it.

Hey everyone, this was my first Ludum Dare game. It was quite stressful but ended up being a fun experience overall! :sweatdrops:

Check it out! :sparkles:

Survive the Island in 'Survival Jack'

Hello everyone :D I've made a game for Ludum Dare 38. This is the first time I've jammed alone, so it was really difficult, but the experience was well worth it. There hasn't been much testing at all so I hope it works good enough and isn't too easy/difficult. Check it out if you can and I hope you find something enjoyable :) Without further ado...

Doing more with less. Making Bunny on a Plane.

Hi all, i'm Oli, I've been doing LD, mainly solo, regularly for the last 2 years. This Jam I made Bunny on a Plane, and I want to talk about how to get the most out of your assets as a one man team.

This obviously applies more to people doing the Jam rather than the compo, so keep that in mind

boap0.PNG

Bunny on a Plane makes extensive use of previous code and assets, which can be really helpful when you're trying to make a thing in a small amount of time. My last 3 LD games have shared, and new assets, which are made as required, but they all share a 3D Bunny toy model, and make use of boilerplate code from the previous games.

BunnyOnAPlane_example.gif

I think making some simple reusable UI control code really helps making things feel complete, a title screen helps a lot. Try and build small libraries for all types of assets, sound effect, fonts, 2D, 3D, not just code. This can also help develop your own style. The last 3 jam games I've made are all set in the same world, so shared assets and style makes thematic sense.

In bunny on a plane, in terms of new assets, I made a plane, some 3D music notes, balloons, some nice splash screens, and some music. All of those assets can be reused, apart from perhaps the music. I also made a karaoke script that can be easily dropped in to new games.

You'll also find that things like a high score manager and scripts to change things like color, size and position at random come in very handy. Try and keep your game jam code modular this time, so you can use it next time.

BunnyOnAPlaneemexample/em3.gif

Of course, finding great friends to help make assets and code for you can really help a lot,and is something I'd encourage, but if you're a lone wolf, or like the challenge of working alone, thinking about how the code you write this jam can help your next jam is worthwhile, and is good practice in general.

We're all in this to make games, not rewrite the same high score system every jam, so keep the idea of modular, reusable assets in mind.

Thanks for reading, hope you give my little game a try!

Murder Mitosis

Just woke up and realized, that we published the game but forgot to tell anyone

So let me tell you about our 72 hour JAM project Murder Mitosis:

smaller5_gif.gif

It is a 1-4 player arena game in which you compete to control microscopic blob creatures in a petri dish. These things are out to kill you. Your only weapon is to convert them to your color and make them kill your enemies instead, but every time you do they multiply.

While the game is best played with friends, we also invested way too much time into AI players...

This is our first "released" game and we would love for you to play it and tell us what you think:

Never link a prefab to itself

During the development of Caelium Alpha (using Unity), I was trying to fix weird bug in which trying to spawn 1 planet actually spawns multiple planets. I was not able to fix the bug by the time the LD Jam ended, which was obviously concerning. Now I wake up the next morning to fix the problem, and I found out that a prefab (for planets, stars, etc.) that references itself was being set to a gameObject, even though I never asked for that.

Long story short, if you have a prefab with a script that references that very same prefab itself, the prefab will turn into a cloned gameObject. Very annoying "bug", but unfortunately Unity says in the forums that it was intentionally designed. I still don't understand how, but the moral of the story is:

Don't let a prefab reference itself. It can jeopardize your development time (like it did for me).

Claustroful: A color-based runner!

1c6c.png

http://claustroful.space

Have thoughts or reactions to claustroful? Let me know @WispDev on twitter.

After a long weekend with a 2 man team featuring 0 artists or musicians, I think we came up with something we can be proud of. Claustroful is a new take on runner games like the Impossible Game, but adds the additional complexity of being able to change colors. You only interact with the level elements of your color, so the net effect is a game that's part timing/reaction test, part puzzle. There are typically multiple solutions to the scenarios to reward the player for creative problem solving, but realistically speaking the player's mechanics are powerful enough that it can be tricky to engineer levels with no loopholes in them. Whether that's a good thing or not is probably a matter of perspective.

This has been my second jam ever, but I spent a while polishing the result of my first jam, so it was really nice to see how strong my 2D Unity skills had become since last year. However, the take away this time is that I really would like to improve my creative skills for future endeavors. Although I play music (check out the title track!), I don't have the practical experience to mix tracks in a crunch, and although I know the basics of photoshop, it took me quite some time before I was creating assets at an acceptable pace and even then the atmosphere was somewhat scattered. I've been inspired though, and I'd like to hone my creative skills and tackle a compo challenge in the future.

Play Super Tiny Adventure Game!

title.png

It's done, I've had some rest as well so I thought I'd just upload one of those obligatory posts saying, PLAY THIS GAME coupled with a handful of animated gifs.

So basically what it is, is a 2D "collectathon" made in under 72 hours. It contains four worlds and one hub world. I wanted to see if it's possible to make one of these under the time limit and it turns out it is just possible.

smallgif.gif

I had to sadly cut a world out (it was either that or have zero music for the game.) I also didn't have time to add in a options menu, or cut-scenes that I originally had planned, but oh well, it's a LDjam game, it wouldn't be the same if things weren't cut or hurriedly finished.

boggy.gif

Hopefully it plays well, sorry for the lack of polish here and there but I'm pretty proud of it :D

lostr.gif

So here be the link to my LDjam page, check it out if you want! I'll start playing peeps games once the judging has started, (I fancy a couple of days rest.) I hope everyone had an amazing jam! :D

First Jam Down

This was the first jam I participated in. And let me say. It was a lot of fun. Can't wait for the next.

Timelapse for King of the world

What a fun weeekend but exhausting! I created King of the world which is a mixed turnbased/realtime strategy game where the objective is to take over the world.

description.png

King of the world is a game about a small world with three generals or “wanna be world leaders” that fight to claim the most areas, the objective of the game is to lead your general to victory by taking out all the other generals.

This game was originally intended to be part of the compo but I ran out of time and decided to polish it up a bit and enter the jam instead which I think was a good call.

Check out the timelapse if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K3Q0HD4h44

Looking forward to playing all the games :)

Destroyed - Post Mortem

game1.png

The start

The theme was perfect for the type of game I had in mind and my original vision is pretty much the completed game. A few things weren't implemented in time and a few extra things were added but it worked out well in the end.

What's missing

Originally, I wanted to include EMP missiles to temporarily disable enemy movement and lasers, but I wanted the player to be able to disable multiple UFOs at once and there wasn't time to code that.

I had also wanted to include an upgrade system to increase missile damage, increase reload speed, unlock different weapons, etc. but (again) no time.

A way to pause. This should've been done at the start of day 1 but I forgot and didn't realise in time.

A back story. There must be a reason the aliens are attacking the planet. Use your imagination, I guess?

Difficulty and bugs

Having two different modes (two minute survival mode and an endless mode) turned out well, although the game balance is a bit off. Easy difficulty is far too easy and hard difficulty is probably too hard. Normal is just right though.

Most bugs I encountered were related to not cleaning up properly after a game finishes. For example, not resetting a counter or not properly removing old collision objects. That's definitely something I need to work on next time.

The end

My choice of engine (love2d) worked really well for me, although next time I'd really prefer a web game so people can play it more easily.

I'm happy with the final game. The idea perfectly suited my abilities, I implemented most things, and my programmer art wasn't too terrible.

What's the Point?

what's the point.png

Thanks for a nice experience!

This was our second game ever made and our first Ludum Dare ever! We learned ALOT and are quite happy with our rather strange (maybe pointless?) little game. Since our little team is inexperienced gamedev rookies we decided to make something really simple and try and learn stuff on the way. Alot of hacking, and loads of spaghetticode.

We decided to use our favorite tools to do this: MSpaint and the awesome open-source engine Löve2d. We started with minimal basecode and made use of kikitos awesome anim8 and gamera libraries. if you havent checked his luawork out, you really should. awesome stuff!

Here's a game description for ya!

What's the point?

You're a man walking around in a small town observing your suroundings, acting out your feelings. Created with Löve2d and MSPaint (third-party libraries used: anim8 and gamera). Environmental storytelling and multiple endings!

"Her name" A point & click game about alzheimer.

ss 2-fexiq8h4.png

HER NAME

‘Her Name’ is an point & click adventure game, where you control Tom, and old guy who has been recently diagnosticated whit alzheimer and see how his world is getting smaller. Knowing this, all that Tom wants from this point is to remember the name of his beloved wife.

In order to do so, Tom has to go through his mind, collecting important memories that will lead him to the name of his wife before his world dissapears.

Depending on the memories you collect, you’ll have a “good” or a bad ending.

Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!

Question

Am I allowed to make a post ludum dare version of my game? And can this version be in the same download?

Dungeon Sphere Runner

Play on itch.io

https://www.itch.io/embed-upload/458822

My entry is an infinite runner style game on a sphere. I took inspiration from the sphere mini-game on Sonic 3 but themed it around D&D. It only has 1 map presently and no "victory" condition, but the engine loads maps from files so creating and adding more is very possible. Just use the left and right arrows to turn (or keys if you download the desktop version).

What went right The library I used (libgdx) worked great allowing me to skip the low-level code and get straight to making a game. Additionally I have already ported it to the web and plan to add an android port soon as well.

What went wrong My trying to figure out the 3D math to get the sphere to turn in the correct direction took most of Saturday and left little time to create actual maps.

What's next I plan to add map packs and teleporting between levels. To that end I will be adding gates and keys. Also sound effects and multiple lives seem fairly simple and would add some polish to the overall play. Given more time animations could be added so as the character flying instead of just sliding around.

Superbugs: a post-mortem report

I didn't get chance to blog about our jam entry - Superbugs - during development, but I've just written a post with some details for anyone who is interested. It covers most of the development process, mentions the bits that were tricky (eg making a grid of hexagons is harder than I thought it would be!) and contains a few screenshots from the game before it was finished.

OUTWORN INSTINCT

We would like to present our game to you. This is a psychological drama with elements of surrealism. The room of the protagonist became a trap for him. Leaving it, he always returns to it. Only the tasks change. The fate of the protagonist and his internal conflicts are embodied in reality. He will have to find answers to questions that have long tormented him or forever lost his way in the phantasmagoric world.

Late completion post

after failing to complete my attempt at LD37, I have finally succeeded and produced a product that I'm quite happy with! presenting: Toy Time Turbo, a matchbox scale racing game.

TTT_1.gif

I managed to submit it to the compo, by a margin of 40 minutes. now that I've had some rest it is quite obvious that the primary take away from my attempts at LD37 and LD38 is that playability comes first. ignoring basic features like menus and level loading were my downfall in LD37, and I only barely managed to implement them in time this time around as well. I only added a speedometer in the last build of the game, and it made a much bigger difference than I expected. next time I will attempt to have a fully playable build to send to my friends for testing before I even start on art assets.

Petty Puny Planet 38

Another Ludum Dare, another game done! It’s been awhile since our team worked so thoroughly on one of these. Even with different timezones, blackouts and time displaced samurai-themed cartoon breaks, we somehow managed to put it together.

Let’s keep it tidy and simple, after creating and developing Colossorama (LD36) and Hyper Holomayhem (LD37) on past events, we would like to present you Petty Puny Planet 38!

PPPHeader.png

Why have a pet rock when you can have a pet planet? (Technically the same. The planet is just a bigger and cosmic rock). As some bigger-than-life entity, it’s your job to take care of a tiny small world - and the tiny people that live on it - and take it for a spin. Decide every century on how to further develop it. Give the people reaches! Teach them about fire! Mutate them if you must!

PPPLudumDare3.png

However, take in mind that being in charge of a planet is hard work, so you’ll have to take a hundred years long break after every choice. Just hope that the tiny people are still around when you’re back. They’re smart people. They’ll figure something out.

And of course, there wouldn’t be choices without consequences! Take the right decisions and your people can be prepared for the worst. Certain decisions branch into others. Some could make them richer and happier, while others can have the opposite effects! With 8 endings, it’s up to you to put the Plan in Planet and take the people onto a new era!

PPPLudumDare1.png

Or if you don’t want the responsibility, then just go and make the wildest planet that you can. Most choices and events have a visual impact on the planet, making this one of the most outlandish dress up games you’ve probably ever played. If you decide to player the desktop version of the game, at any point, feel free to press the camera button and a screenshot of your planet will be saved on the game’s data folder.

PPPLudumDare2.png

In case you don’t really like desktop versions, you can also play it on your browser, or download it for Android devices! We hope that you like it, and that your feedback can help us add more features in the future! Hopefully, any post-jam updates will take less than a hundred years to be developed! We’ll update you with a post-mortem in the coming days, so I hope you keep us in your sights for a while.

Well then, what are you waiting for? We’re looking forward to see what kind of small world you’re going to have in the end, and we hope you share your screenshots with us! Go on now, you can create your own planets over on itch.io, and don’t forget to leave us a comment over at our Ludum Dare page!

In behalf of team Whales and Games, enjoy your pet planets!

This was quite a journey...for the whole community

Like the title says – This was quite a journey...for the whole community.

It was my first time organizing local game jam, and it sure was one of the most wonderful things I did in my life! Looking back at these three days is like experiencing it again with all those feely moments :) Not to be so pathetic, I honestly think it was great experience meeting all the cool new people from around the country and being in the same struggle for 72 hours.

Me and the guys from @kajmak hosted local gathering for Ludum Dare Jam 38 in Serbia (small country in the Balkans). It was the first time for the local community to have event like this one in their hometown. It really kickstarted new ideas and embraced the people from local co-working places to host these kind of events in the future. That is what I am most excited about, besides making a game in a short time.

We managed to get our game to a pretty good state by time the Jam ended. Our take on Small World, is that the world is very small compared to a monster like Cthulhu. You explore an abandoned mansion room by room to collect clues and close the portals that the monster is trying to use to invade our dimension.

Also, the rooms are tiny, like a board game or doll house type rooms.

Hope you enjoy.

and more fruit!

Easy to play but really hard to win, in this strategy you have to carefully breed your own plants to get the desired golden cabbage!

This game was made by two people purely on linux (apart from about 1 hour of windows testing). LINUX POWER! :desktop:

Smallest MMORPG Ever

Banner

Post mortem

So we built an MMORPG in 72h. The only thing sad about it, is that I didn't have time/people to test the multiplayer feature correctly. Two people connecting at the same time is working like a charm! More? No clue... So if you see this post, don't hesitate to download the game and give it a try. My goal was to make it work for 20 people at the same time! Here's the download link :

  • Ludum Dare 38 Page : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$27214

We really wanted to implement, boss with phases, gold management, shop, loot system, inventory but time was an issue :) We decided to keep it simple as possible. There is actually a huge difficulty problem. I think the game is really addictive with the XP / Leaderboard system, I mean I couldn't stop clicking clown to get more xp but it miss a little difficulty, it's way too simple.

If you have ideas, suggestions don't hesitate to put it on the comments below.

Thanks

Thanks Ludum Dare Staff for the new platform, Dan K. who did the client programing of the game, Stephane Donnet who re-made the whole the client/server architecture with me ... very late yesterday night :D and of course my beloved girlfriend Jennifer who spent her weekend looking at me screaming at my computer <3.

Destruction Zone Timelapse

So, I finally did some video editing and got my livestream footage of Destruction Zone (35-ish hours) into an 8-minute timelapse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0ZuLaK2oNo

I was hoping to use Chronolapse, but I misunderstood the software and didn't get footage for a good chunk of the first day, and by that point I had decided I'd just downmix the stream footage into its own video. Maybe I'll practice with Chronolapse before next time.

This is a video I did discussing my compo entry GERM, a first person shooter heavily inspired by DOOM. In short, things went surprisingly well this past weekend and everything came together to form what I feel is a really fun game. If you try it, please be sure to come back once judging starts to rate and please comment with your thoughts. All input is welcome!

I sample start screen. I'm not so happy with it but it is temporary.

Now we have enemies but they don't do much. Have to fix that and I guess I'll be adding another type of enemy.

I also need to improve graphics. I need a better "planetey" floor and create animations for the enemies, bullets and defense shield... I think I have a lot to do now. I could never finish this on time for the jam, LOL!

My first Ludum Dare over the weekend -- had a blast programming Seven Pillars, making all of the assets, and getting almost no sleep for a couple days. Already looking forward to LD39.

ghost story

Did I hear something about cake? Maybe not, but anyway for this anniversary I managed for the first time to participate in the compo and to submit something still buggy but working and (from my point of view) fun.

ghost story is the attempt to include storytelling that doesn't interrupt the game flow (like portal or thomas was alone) into a metroidvania game. My goal was to include every Ludum Dare theme as quotes into the story dialog but as you can imagine time was too short...

Now I won't spoil the experience with more explanation and hope you like my entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/ghost-story

Btw, I'll buy you a beer if you figure out to witch song the background music refers :)

[Jam} Operation Garden Storm

Hi, We took part in the Jam with a team of two for this LD Our game is Operation Garden Storm, which is a top down shooter where you play as a small gnome character and have to reach the creator to save your village, there are beetle enemies on the way which you have to kill / avoid.

gamess1.jpg

What went well----------

Well we finished the game which I didn't think we would at one point Our theme idea was fun, I haven't seen many games with a similar looking idea I was happy with how the beetle enemies turned out probably the most polished looking asset in our game We learned a lot of new things and had fun!

What could have gone better--------------

Well the game was way too big... Which is ironic and the theme was small world. I never seem to learn and cant stop making games which are too big for a weekend Wish I had spent more time on the character animation, I had to refresh my memory on both maya and animating, and the animation turned out pretty bad for the player. The game was pretty bland and basic, we should have focused more on an original mechanic The soundtrack was poor, but I spent 30 mins on it and have never done sound, so I wish I had the time to focus on that more. Plan the map better

Overall im happy we finished the game, as I ran into so many problems with the AI, Its probably the worst of our games mechanically, but I learned a lot about AI, optimization, and rigging / animating and had fun.

Welcome, everyone. Unfortunately, in this Ludum Dare, I had even less than a day, but I managed to apply things in my mind. That was a lot of fun.

My first LD lies behind me. Well, all in all I worked on my game only a couple of hours. I got next to no sleep and real life constantly hindered my progress which is why I missed the compo deadline and had to enter the jam. I only managed to create something simple, something very small but the experience of challenging myself, finding the determination to go on, continuing my work no matter what and actually finishing my project the way I imagined it to be is for the lack of a better word... invigorating. Loved it.

My First Compo Entry - "The Ludum Show"

Hey everyone, this has been my first LD experience and I thought now would be a good time to look back on my creation.

The first thing I did after waking up was scribble down ideas. I decided to go for a 2d scroller puzzle game, as this would be reasonably easy to implement, based on the idea of being trapped in a TV set (inspired by the film "The Truman Show").

Initial Drawings:

Photo on 25-04-2017 at 22.23.jpg

Final Game:

e60-1.png

As you can see, the overall plot and design aspects did not change dramatically from start to finish, mainly due to having the sketch in front of me for the full 48 hours as reference - perhaps not the best idea as it stopped me taking the game too far from my original concept when thinking of new ideas.

I had also planned to create a soundtrack and sound effects, however this time was used up mainly on graphics (I am useless at art, so this was the biggest time sink, especially the animation). Tip to self: don't spend 3+ hours on little details!

Fortunately my stoneage laptop only crashed 4 times in the whole event (that's better than average while running something like GameMaker for long periods of time), each time conveniently when I was working on something that would have taken too long to add anyway!

Overall I'm just happy I've finally finished a game, even though it's very short and lacks the sort of depth and challenge I had hoped.

I would love to get some feedback from you guys on what I could perhaps do differently next time (fairly sure I will be competing in LD39) and your honest opinions of my game, which you can find at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$17863.

How Polar Protector came to be

Ludum Dare 38 was my first experience with a game jam, and overall it was a damn good one. As expected, I found myself under a lot of pressure to avoid over-scoping, and I think I did so successfully. I ended up finishing the game about 10 hours before the deadline for the compo.

I woke up at 6AM on Saturday morning. The theme was announced 2AM prior, but I decided that waking up early rather than staying up late would buy me more time during the event.

Despite the fact that I'd just woken up and was effectively dead for the next few minutes, I rushed to my computer to find out the theme - "A Small World".

After spending 20 minutes puzzling, drinking tea to wake me up and then puzzling some more, I had an idea. I would create a game where the player stands on a small world and fights off enemies. A few iterations later, I had the core concept for my submission.

I decided to name it "Polar Protector", since the aim of the game is to protect the poles at each end of the planet. Not magnetic poles, but rather actual metal poles jutting out from each side.

I spent most of Saturday programming and drawing up graphics. I worked for 13 hours straight(from 6AM to 7PM) and came out the other end feeling significantly less than alive.

I would estimate that out of these 13 hours, I spent about 8-9 hours on the art and 4-5 on the programming. For someone who barely scrapes passable when trying to make art assets, I think that's more-or-less expected.

I took Sunday a bit slower, since the bulk of the game was finished by that point. I only had to make some sound effects, music, and stick a load of particles everywhere. I made the sound effects by recording myself making noises and then messing with it in Audacity, save one sound that I made in sfxr. Try to guess which one!

I made the music using BeepBox, and I put the particles everywhere and removed the ones that didn't make any sense. All in all, it was a successful venture.

If you're intrigued by the final product, you can find it (along with its source code) on Gamejolt here:

http://gamejolt.com/games/polar_protector/251600

I also recorded a short timelapse of the game being created. Unfortunately, I forgot to record the final 10% where I added the particles and the music, but most of it is there. You can find this timelapse on Youtube below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G__q-WFoLeI

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy playing my submission!

Petit Adventure

With the site working at last I present you my submission - Petit Adventure, a little RPG game with turn-based battles.

Sumbission page with download links: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$16258 jrpg05.png

When I thought what concept to pick up from all that came to my mind after theme was announced, the final decision was based on thought "Why do I see almost no RPGs in Ludum Dare's submissions?" Well, now I do know why, from my own experience. RPG genre requires insane amounts of programming and testing. I had to drop out about 3/4 of planned features from the game and I still almost didn't make it to the Jam submission. And to think that I wanted submit it to the Compo! What left and implemented is pretty small and simple game but it is still a RPG game(it tends to be more like JRPG actually) and I hope it could be enjoyed for 10-15 minutes that requires to beat it for this moment.

Most regrettable thing is that I didn't find time to add more enemies variety, now it features only spiders and mushrooms. And one boss. ld38screen.png
