Sincere Apologies from the SquidBoy and StarFace Devs

Dear player,

The devteam from the cinematic and iconic masterpiece 'SquidBoy and StarFace' would like to sincerely apologize for their mutilation of the graphical integrity of their product.

Unfortunately during shipping of our product one of our programmers forgot to add a vital part to the already legendary boss 'The Bloody HornBeak'. As a result, players of our game were unable to appreciate the final product...

Like you can see in the attached evidence, the boss was supposed to have an extra horn, that would deteriorate during the boss stages and would be able to fully bring out the aesthetics that we had initially envisioned

Envisioned graphical fidelity (Stage 3): BloodyHornBeakStage3.png

The horn in question across all stages: horns.png

The final ingame product (which can be found here): Untitled.png

We feel like this is an unforgivable mistake on our part and assure you, the players, that the programmer in question has been delt with and will taint the noble art of gamedev no more.

Have a pleasant day,

The SquidBoy devs

Um...Sorry Me again haha just update my game with some small fix and change

Thanks for the dudes from the LD community who has given their feedbacks to me, so I try to tackle the problems in my game.

Enchain

I've been so busy with school work since the Jam ended that I haven't been able to play any games or post about mine. But now I'm doing both... here's Enchain!

_gameGif2.gif

What is Enchain? It's basically a first-person shooter with a grappling hook. You can only finish off enemies by grapple-throwing them. However, this causes their souls to be chained to you, restraining your movement until you release them back into the physical world. The enemies you carry might be needed to open doors along the way.

Instruction text screen after submission?

Is it against the rules to include starting text with instructions into build after publishing a game? I didn't have time for it during jam itself(spent 2 hours trying to fix build-specific problems, barely made it in time), but after reading feedback I think it would help.

Speed Demon - Design Retrospective

A design retrospective by @schonstal

GameplayItch.gif

A BRUTAL RACE ON A DEMONIC SPEEDWAY

The goal of this project was to make something that feels fast. You don't move, you teleport. You don't fire a bullet, you fire a laser beam (that instantly hits everything in your path).

Every moment that passes, the ship's energy builds and the boost gets faster and faster, until you reach overwhelming speed: the walls scroll so fast you can't see the details anymore, the screen shakes, and you have just barely enough time to processs what's coming ahead. The only way to slow down is to fire your massive laser beam, destroying everything in your path while potentially sacrificing your ability to make it to the next checkpoint before time runs out.

Taking the Rhythm out of Rhythm Games

I used to play Dance Dance Revolution pretty seriously, and one thing that I've always liked about DDR (and rhythm games in general) is sight-reading. You learn to master the patterns and then you react to them almost on instinct, using the rhythm as a guiding tool for when you need to press the button. You're reading ahead and deciding what to do in advance, and then executing that plan. This is something I love in games of skill of all kinds, but rhythm games wear this on their sleeves.

screenshot1.png

But this isn't a rhythm game. This is a game about speed. It's about acceleration and avoiding fast moving objects. You can't exactly tie that to a rhythm and get what we wanted out of it. It could be done, but that's not what we set out to build.

So we turned the rhythm game on its head. There's no rhythm in this game, instead those patterns become a track. And instead of pressing it on time, you're avoiding it, at any time you please; this forms into something that's like a highly-regular race track, a readable series of obstacles to dodge with a discrete set of places you can be. It's something that can be intense and fast, but also readable, executable, and masterable.

Finding Challenge

This removal of rhythm was not free. Without that demand for precision, it doesn't take much mastery before you can relatively easily work through the game without much effort, since you don't have to focus on hitting that one note in that one exact spot at exactly the right time. And simply adding more obstacles wasn't satisfying--the demand of mastery of this unusual control scheme was too much, and it made the play experience frustrating.

But we wanted the game to feel more dynamic, anyway. This wasn't meant to be a rhythm game. It's an action racing game. So the question became: how do we add decision-making and more dynamic engagement to the game?

The solution we eventually found was to add a boss. Now you have one more step to your planning: you're looking ahead and have to think about where you need to be in 5 steps but also have a backup plan if you think the boss is going to fire. Suddenly you have to think about all these possible options, and those wide open spaces add depth to the game instead of leaving it hollow.

screenshot2.png

Empowering the Player, Enabling Greed

I've never been a huge fan of difficulty selectors. They're a necessity in some cases (DDR would be terrible if it was stuck on Heavy), but one thing they often do is create a world that feels like it's ushering in the player's success. Regardless of if this is what you're game is setting out to deliver, if you want a world that feels like a real, hostile place, even as over-the-top as this game is, I always want to find a way around having something that feels like omnipotent control over the difficulty of the game.

But in this case, there's an obvious factor: speed. The more you have, the worse it is (hey, that's the theme). So you can just reduce your speed, and the game gets easier!

But I also wanted to encourage the player to take risks. To get greedy. To overstep their bounds and be punished for it (or to be rewarded for it).

So we added two things: - A dynamic "make the game easier" button (the laser). - A timer that counts down, ending the race when it's at 0.

screenshot3.png

These two things work together to create the effect we were looking for: you can both slow down your speed and clear enemies out of the way using your laser beam, making the game easier in the near term, but ultimately costing you time as you won't make it to the checkpoint fast enough to fully replenish your time stores. This won't matter much for a new player (they wouldn't make it too far anyway), so they can use the laser fairly liberally, but a skilled player may attempt to use the beam as little as possible, trying to bank up precious seconds for when things end up getting dicey and they need to grind to a halt.

Feelings

Ultimately, this wall put together to create a feel, and in that sense, I think it was a success. We didn't work with our usual music collaborator this time and we didn't wind up having time to mess around with writing our own music and sound effects, so it feels like it could have been much more with audio. But I am satisfied with it as a game jam project, and I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback!

Don't Grow Ego : News

GameJolt Header.png

Hello again ! Like I said earlier, I tried to improve the overall comprehension and score system.

Here is what's new :

  • Added a few words when losing to indicate the reason why you lost.
  • Changed the balance system so that you can't mass click anymore or grow till infinity and beyond.

Now I think players will have to focus more on the answer's impact. I hope it feels more balanced than before. I'll probably have to make more improvements in the future. That being said, this time it should feel less unfair.

New texts are planned for the next improvements.

Try it out !

The Wreck of the Pulstar-VIII - Making the Characters

Hey there! I wanted to dedicate a post to share how I created the characters for my short sci-fi adventure "The Wreck of the Pulstar VII".

Since I had little time and it was just me making the game, I decided to go for a very low resolution and a pixel art style, yet having enough pixels to create expressive characters. The game was designed at a base resolution of 320x180 and the characters are 100x100 pixels in size.

charbase_postmortem1.png

To create the characters I started with a pretty simple lineart drawing, to define the shape and basic structure of the face and body. After that I added a color layer and, finally, some shadowing in order to give some volume to the sprite. this shadowing is basically a layer with low opacity colored in black and white.

charbase_postmortem2.png

That was the "neutral" expression for each character, looking to define a bit their personality. Here Amy, the doctor, shows confidence in herself.

After that I crated 3 more expressions for each character (surprised, angry and sad), in order to mke them more live alike according to each situation. I wanted to make them move their lips while talking but, unfortunately, I didn't have enough time for that!

Well, hope you enjoyed this bit of how I made the game :) Oh, and I used Gimp for Mac, it's a really nice editor and completely free.

You can play the game here, would love to read some feedback!: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/the-wreck-of-the-pulstar-viii

Jam has ended... what´s next?

This has been my third of four time I´ve particpated in a Jam and its, by far, the one that I´m most proud of. I´ve worked with two friends (the three of us programers) and the experience was very nice.

In fact, we are very happy with the results and with the feedback we are having till now. We have started to think if we should take all the recomendations and suggested changes and make a new version of the game in the future.

We started to talk about making a local multiplayer version or, why not, an online one! We are also thinking in making new maps and missions

All feedback is welcome!!! So be free to go and check our game here

Feel free to test my game :D

Hello! I can't post any pictures of the game without spoiling a good part of it. But I can recommend it! Specially since I'm part of the development team lol :D

Come on, when is the last time you made something grammar related? Probably in a long time! Besides, if you get stuck you can always type the cheatcode: "I give up" and jump straight to the next level. Hell, that's encouraging...

Jump Bug fixed

I noticed some of your guys comments and realize that there was a problem with the HTML 5 and PC version of my game (it still worked well on my Unity). The jump button did not always work and I found out that it had to do with Unity GetKeyDown so I changed it to either GetKeyDown or GetKey instead. Now it works really well. Again, I would like to thank everyone who played my game and found this problem.

I also updated the link in the game description for NewGrounds: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/703041?updated=1512537686

Follow Tinky the butterfly in a dreamlike world! In her world, rainbows are not what they seem to be, as they destroy good creatures, including butterflies. Help Tinky collect the magical lights to bring back the goodness in rainbows. Only in the mythical lava lamps can the magical lights be found!

Tinky can run, jump, and fly upwards. She can gain boosts that help her fly further or higher. But beware, not everything is good as it seems to be. The more boosts Tinky has, the worse it is for her to control herself.

2017-12-04 (2).png

2017-12-04 (3).png

There are 4 boosts in the game:

Green Orb: increase run speed Blue Orb: increase jump height Yellow Orb: increase fly speed and the height that Tinky can reach when flying Pink Orb: increase Tinky’s size, make her bigger Try to stay away from the boosts in your path!

There are currently 4 levels in this game. It will get more difficult in the 3rd and 4th levels, even though level 1 is not that easy at all.

Movements (if you are too lazy to read the instructions in the game):

Left Arrow, Right Arrow: move horizontally (can move while falling from the sky)

X: jump upwards (only vertically). Can hold Left Arrow or Right Arrow while jumping to move horizontally.

Z: fly upwards and also moves horizontally at the same time. Cannot jump or use Left Arrow nor Right Arrow to move while flying, but can use Left Arrow and Right Arrow while falling after flying.

Words from the developer: This is the first time I participated in Ludum Dare, also the first time I’ve ever completed a game in such a short amount of time. I did all of the work, but couldn’t submit it in time for compo, so I submitted it to the Jam instead. I would really love to see your comments. I used Unity, GIMP 2, Audacity to make this game. For the audio, I had to pitch my voice up really high, from a man’s voice to a fairy-ish creature. If you notice any bugs, feel free to comment, so I could improve my codes next time. Ludum Dare 40 is on the weekend before my final week of class as a freshman at college, so I was busy and could have bettered a lot of aspects of my game (i.e. make it easier).

Thank you for playing my game! Good luck on playing my game (it’s really hard). Tell me if you get to the first lava lamp (finish the first level).

Screenshot from 2017-12-06 12-40-25.png

Originally, the bagger was supposed to collect bodies and haul them off-screen. Due to time constraints, I immediately knew the easier approach would be to have him just eat the bodies and replace them with a blood stain.

His path finding is actually dumbed down for the final submission, to just attack the player if he has no bodies to eat. What he was supposed to do (and is coded to do if you checkout the code), was escape off-screen repeatedly until he had collected 5 bodies. At this point he would evolve into a tougher enemy, and come after the player. This would mean the player had to keep an eye out for these quick, scurrying enemies and make sure they didn't collect enough bodies to level-up. This is why the original "body destroy" functionality was added to the game, so that if you didn't want to revive a mutant, you could still render the body useless for the baggers.

If you haven't played my game yet, give it a shot! I'd love to hear your feedback!

Le Bugs et le bane but happy with my entry - Shroom Hunter

Damn Bugs

It's always annoying when you build something and one bug affects the gameplay, in Shroom Hunter it appears this issue is enemy AI, I picked this up just before the end of the Jam during playtesting , as can be seen at about this point;

https://youtu.be/Qy_rMIJQNgA?t=5h1m10s

Frozen Zombies to be fixed in 1.2

The issue seems to be tied in with how the zombie scripts function and move through the world - it seems that sometimes if one zombie gets stuck the rest tend to follow and then they all pause or glitch. There are some issues apparently with Zombie AI in GameGuru which I think are lined up to be fixed in the next update, so hopefully all going well Shroom Hunter should be patched to 1.2 within the month. So hoping this will automatically fix the issues. Did experiment with some scripts last night and applying some different AI scripts messing with the path in the engine, but still AI seems to eventually break under certain scenarios. Still learning is good and I would like to say thanks to anyone who has left me comments and reviews, I've had quite a lot and it is nice to receive generally warm feedback from people. Shroom Hunter was a bit of a last minute - fuck it I'll go for it idea, but it was good to work under such pressure, and I found the entire experience of developing and sharing with others, really fun and inspiring.

Added a Web Build to Blood Clot!

Super happy that everything ended up working. I only published my Game Project because I had Unity problems, now fixed. Have fun, I'll be rating your games all night!

Plot-Twist!

I have to confess that the main character of my game doesn't have a face. Maybe it's because of that that all those zombies are trying to kill him/her. You're basically buying a ticket for the Bahamas to a weird alien-like monster ;)

Birds Birds Birds - Our entry!

This was definitely one of our most challenging game jam ever. When we started, we came up with the idea of a game about a dinosaur with playful sons who followed him everywhere and broke stuff. Sadly, I -the programmer/Unity guy- found out at the end of day one I wasn't going to finish the stuff in time.

Day two was mostly about low moral, trying to come up with a good idea we could develop in the remaining time and fighting with a bird that wanted to attack us when we were on the window.

On the night of Day 2, we came up with this idea about a guy who randomly ended up being stuck on a balancing car on the top of a mountain and birds standing on both sides of the car, breaking that perfect balance.

In less than 20 hours (of almost no sleep), this game was made.

We were really lucky to have the amazing, incredible, awesome Moon Moon Moon ( https://themoonmoonmoon.bandcamp.com/ ) create some original music for us, but he's also on some sort of personal, music jam (he's writing, recording and uploading a new song every day), so he was short on time.

Luckily, we made it and most of the planned features were included in the build.

Give it a shot! It means a lot for us :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/birds-birds-birds

Explanation of my my game rules

EventCard.png.jpg I saw some players comment things like 'UI doesn't scale', 'I don't see text on the cards', 'I always win when I press attack though I don't have any cards on the table' and so on.

First, UI scales right. Cards have only numbers visible(if not send some screenshots), text is too small because it should not be read. It's just made to make card look better. I will post the card image if you really want to read what is written there.

The game has problems I'm aware of. If you click Attack in the first turn, you can win if your opponent doesn't have card 1 or 2 in the deck(which you control because you choose cards). If he has, it doesn't have to mean he has them in his hand, and you win again. If he has 1 in his hand, you lose. AI will not attack you in the first turn because it's made to get as big number of cards as possible when he wins. I made it like that to make the game last more.

Second, there is no 'table'. The 3D model of the table should have had cards but I didn't have time to add them. It should also have had a heart model and the feather of Toth's on the Scale of Afterlife.Animations in the game are quite bad with that reason, too. If I added that it would count as a feature change, so just imagine it's there... You will be able to see only the sum of left and the sum of right scale side whenever you drag your card, and your difference will be displayed as 'Saldo'. Sum of left and right are displayed in the upper right corner of the screen colored red and blue. His difference between left and right and the number of cards in the deck will be also shown there. Unused content of unfinished game

I think, this time my game The Legend of the Bikini Armor is in the most poor state of unfinishedness than any other of my LD entries. I did cut some content every time but this time it really was too much.

The plenty of planned armors wouldn't be implemented anyway, yes: bikiniemnot/emused.jpg But I even failed to include already drawn and ready set of heavy armor animations: bikiniemchar/emha_attack2.png The conclusion: Do scope down after you scoped down. First Ludum Dare conclusion

Hello Guys :D

This was my first Ludum Dare ever. Also the 'Drunken Soviet' is my first fully finished game as well as my friend. And...

We're incredibly surprised :D The feedback is awsome. We thought that will be crap because we're both programmers and we can't draw anything at all xdd So we drew some sprites with incredibly effort and also took some with Public Domain licence from opengameart.org and other sites like that.

There is one 'disadvantage' of our game. Almost everyone is telling that 'Drunken Soviet' is too hard :D I made 2 quick updates just with decreasing enemys' health and increasing player's damage a bit and still I'm receiving feedback that game is hard. Except for friend of mine, who is still playing my game on harder version and he told me he was going to master this game :D I think he enjoys it XD

If you want to check 'Drunken Soviet' yourself go here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/drunken-soviet

I'll be glad if you rate my game :D

A Brief Review of My Second Ludum Dare

This year, I participated in my first Ludum Dare (and Game Jam in general), which was LD38. However, I didn't truly work hard at it. I sloppily pieced together a Frankenstein's monster of a platform game in way less than 72 hours and uploaded it for the jam. However, for my second Ludum Dare, I really set my mind to getting a good game done in under 48 hours for the compo. This effort resulted in my entry, titled "Quadrilateral Damage"...

QuadDamage001.png

Despite some difficulties I bumped into, having that 48 hour restriction makes me SO MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE! Usually when I try to make a game, my brain makes me aspire towards some big complex award winning masterpiece. But 2 days is not that long, especially not long enough to make the next Cave Story or whatever.

It also gives me a chance to experiment with genres I tend to avoid. This time, it was the Top-Down, Shoot-Em-Up style of game. My interpretation of the theme was to have a bullet's properties be dependant on the ammo count of the player's gun as they shoot. For example, a high ammo count would result in small, slow, weak bullets, but a low ammo count results in fast, strong and big ones.

QuadDamage002.PNG

I found this mechanic, alongside the frantic array of bullets ricocheting across the screen and the usual "3 million objects on the screen at once" style of a bullet hell, to be really addictive. I'd say about half of the time I spent "working" on this game was "testing" (or more realistically, just playing it for fun).

There were lots of features I wanted to add which didn't make the cut due to time restrictions. For example, I originally intended to have something like 5 bosses in my game, but I only got around to making 2. But really, this means I can focus on making sure the features that do make it in are as good as they can be.

QuadDamage003.PNG

The part about this Ludum Dare that has really made my week was that for once, people actually played my game. And what's more, it's gotten some really positive feedback, which is a wonderful and really motivating feeling. Ludum Dare is great for getting a game made and out there for other people try. It was also really cool playing other people's games to see what people had come up with. Some of my personal favourites included "The Weissman Challenge", a typing game made by @caramelcode (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/the-weissman-challenge7) and "Whatever Floats Your Boat", a fun and unique survival game made by @hkay and @klon160 (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/whatever-floats-your-boat).

Overall, this Ludum Dare was an amazing experience, and Ludum Dare 41 cannot come soon enough! It really goes to show how much people can accomplish in a limited time frame, and looking through the vast library of games people have made for one Jam makes me wonder what could be accomplished with more time. As for my own game, I'm planning to upgrade the current version and re-release it later in the month.

If you wanna try my game out and possibly leave a rating and/or a comment (which would very much be appreciated), the link is here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/quadrilateral-damage
