hello, i've made a personal game about a couple of hours of my life
We made it! This was our first LD and our first completed game ever (so please be mercyful  )
The team was made of 2 programmers and a writer, this is why there is so much text

Sometimes a video is required.
Unfortunately when you are running out energy and time the tutorial is neglected. The End result is not as polished as you would like it to be. Explaining the depth and basics are hard enough but when people are having to go through 5 billion game to judge spending 15 mins to understand the game isn't fair. So back to Sometimes a video is required.
https://youtu.be/0fvr4FKojTg
Ive condensed the basics into a short video. The first half is explanations the second is game play. Let me know if it has helped you to understand and play the game.

Hope everyone elses went just as awesome as mine. Learned a lot!

Proud of this one. Here's a link to my game if you haven't played it yet!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/the-quiet-mind
I went ahead and fixed some of the dialogue. Hopefully that helps clarify the narrative.
This was my first complete LD entry and I've really impressed myself. I had to cut so many things, but the result is a project that at least feels complete.
Unlike many other devs, I didn't create a design document or plan too much of the game in advance. There's no right way to do these things, but I found that adding things as I went along helped accelerate development. It also meant that the latency from design to testing was low, so I could discard things that didn't work early on.
I tried to interpret the theme in a unique way. I don't know if I've succeeded but the basic idea is there. I'm happy enough with that.
Looking forward to playing some of your games.

Here's a better gif of the game I made this weekend. Five chracters spawned at random. There are five guitars in the game, but this guitar is modeled after my actual electric guitar I used to record all the riffs in the game.

If you have 3 minutes left over, please try my game! It's an action arena bullet hell puzzle game. It's playable in browser and is an infinite game so you don't need to "complete" it, you can just check how high a score you get. (Also pleeease dont look at the source code, it's REALLY ugly.)
Thank you!

It's so nice getting comments praising your game, especially when it's your first time in Ludum Dare. Thank you to everyone praising me, and especially to those giving me advice as well. This comment in particular made my day:
__Hey don’t be so hard on yourself, this is a pretty good base for a game! I actually liked the graphics, and you had some interesting ideas for enemy types. There wasn’t a connection to the theme, but that’s only one category in the competition. Anyways, it’s good to identify the challenges you had and what kept you from achieving your goal. Next time, you can look over that list and try to make it a little bit shorter.
In my experience, the best way to get a game done in 48 hours is to pick a solid design as quickly as possible. I always spend the first few hours drawing detailed sketches of how I want the final product to look, and try to get it as complete as possible before I write a single line of code or open GIMP. Even if it feels like you’re spending too much time coming up with an idea, you’ll likely waste more time later by not having one. Once you have sketches/concept art/etc, spending the remaining hours actual building the game becomes a lot easier. I also create an “asset manifest”, which is a concrete list of every sprite/sound effect/features I predict I’ll need for the final game. With more experience, you’ll gain a stronger sense of what you can/can’t realistically complete within the time limit.__
Also, and I know I seem bad for advertising my game after that, but please check out my game at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/9-lives. Again, thanks to everyone for their support.

Catcontent... always... works!
You just woke up at Gina's Bed & Breakfast in time to eat. You realize that you are starting to gain weight, and decide to take a morning stroll to burn calories. You can't take it much longer after being forced to eat burgers, and you don't know if you will continue to live.

A very chill game about collecting ores with a spaceship. Dodge the asteroids and return anything you find to the collector! 5-minute matches.
This was me, coding the game:

Rattletrap VR is a room-scale virtual reality shooter for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift + Touch. You can explore the entire ship without artificial walking, if you have a play area of at least 2.5m x 2.5m (8.25' x 8.25'). If you want to play in standing mode you can use smooth- or snap-locomotion.
Defend your high-maintenance clunker from swarms of Leechbots that try to eat your ship's systems. Keep them off your hull and maintain your machinery. But beware, the more Leechbots you get stuck to your hull, the faster your ship's systems will fail.
We hope you will enjoy it and we would love to hear your feedback!

Well first of all I want to say this has been my first time being more active in the community when doing this jam and I am having a great time checking out projects from people and receiving/giving feedback.

This is our first LD together and, after a lot of work, we managed to finish this awesome game. About the Crazy Cat Lady. In wich you feed your multiple cats (because they start coming and they don't stop coming).
It's been super fun doing this and we would really appreciate your vote

I'd love for you to come give it a try!

Overall I came close to giving up and not posting anything, there was a ton of work getting the dungeon generation system to work and while the system I think is good (some tweaks to it to improve randomness might be good though) it took entirely too long. I didn't manage to get an equipment system done , and while my system would allow it, I didn't make enough enemies to make a proper leveling list to increase difficulty based on depth that I wanted.

So that's what I didn't get done. What I did get done was the potion system I wanted, though not as many effects. Essentially every time you chug it, it heals you, but you can affect one of your stats.
This can end up in some bad situations, like a 0% movement speed.
In addition I've got 3 different enemies with 3 different AIs, animations / rigs. All with proper hitboxes and hurtboxes attatched to their attacks. Getting the animation done was a big part of the project, in addition to trying to make a pixely 3d game that isn't voxels or just made of blocks.

While I don't think I want to stick to this art style/project, making a roguelike action rpg scratches a very good itch so I might do something similar in the future.
Thanks for potentially checking out my game and reading this thing :D
Ok so i see a lot of people wondering how this works and whole there was a post earlier describing it in a bit if detail, i have some advice for people who like giving feedback in hopes of boosting that rating.
Now I'm no expert but this is what I've noticed. It takes a few minutes after leaving a rating for that to count to the stats. Now, if you leave a comment as well that's what brings up smart rating. And I've noticed. The longer and more thought-out comments not only give more score, but also eventually get turned into more cool points that a "nice game bro"or "worst game -10/10"
If a game is good tell them why. What works well together, what stands out as their strongest point, how you approached the game, etc.
If the game is complete garbage, it's not. No game jam game is horrible. Some are really bad but theres a time limit. Cobstructive criticism, not abuse. Talk about "x item is missing, here's what i suggest" or "if you add this x you may not know about it'll boost quality for a small time investment". If you kniw the engine they are using give them tips on better ways to handle things like collision detection, etc.
Make the feedback useful. After all, it's what a game jam is all about. Learning. Maybe the kid just it of school made a bad game but that doesn't mean he's bad, just new. Maybe the expert made an awesome game but there's always something new to learn. And thinking about your feedback will also really help you improve as well. Next game you make your own words will be in the back of your head making sure you don't make the same mistake as that one other guy, or making sure you think of something that someone else did.
TLDR; write constructive and thought or feedback as well as ratings for more score! And to help people grow!

I will be grateful if you check the game out, and tell me what you thought! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/king-of-coins

im new to ld and this year was my first but can someone explain the difference between the jam and the compo i noticed 2 timers a few days ago just want sure what the difference was?

What you know about hard games? You think you are a strong player? :D :D :D Play in web our small game and demonstrate that you are not pussy :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/quantums-rick
[Thanks to all that you write us a lot of comments and put an excellent rating! we love you all, friends*]
Hey guys, I'd like to say thanks for the very precious feedback that I received for my game avoider it was really useful.
I realized that I should have let someone play test my game before submitting but that is a little hard when everyone is asleep at 3AM monday morning, heh..
Anyway, I changed the camera to a perspective camera from orthographic and the difference is huge:
Here is the orthographic orginal version of the game:

And here is the new version of the game with the perspective camera:

I think you agree with me that the perspective version of the game looks better and is less annoying to control.
I also added the music from the game on gamejolt:

If you haven't tried my game yet, I'd really appreciate some feedback on it :D
Here is the link to gamejolt where you can try the new perspective mode of the game: https://gamejolt.com/games/avoider/301345

Run as a nude guy!
Finally sharing the (audio-less) jam game, A WIZARD STOLE MY CLOTHES. Honestly very happy with how this all turned out, especially for my first LD! I was planning on the Compo but ended up out of time. May be slightly buggy, but it isn't gamebreaking, mostly graphical. Get your clothes back from the wizard who stole them by running his obstacle course and collecting his crystals. Crystals make you run faster though, so be careful...

Sorry for invading your feed so soon after my last blog post (two hours ago...), but I have news! Sugarplum Summit has been updated to version 1.1. I've implemented the first of many changes, so expect a more balanced fight at the summit. Check out the game page to find out where to play.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE PLAY THE JAM VERSION OF THE GAME IF YOU ARE RATING SUGARPLUM SUMMIT! Do not rate version 1.1! If you are unsure if it is the jam version, an easy way to tell is the ornament logo on the main menu will NOT move. I repeat, will NOT move in the jam version. The Itch.io page has the JAM VERSION embedded and will continue too for convenience .
I am also going to start keeping track of my PostJam hours.
Current PostJam hours: 1.5 hrs.

I though that a few of you might be intrested in how the number of LDers has changed over the last few events, so here are a few charts.

Hey guys! I just wanted to thank the game dev community and just to tell you all, thanks for the hard work. The feedbacks you gave on our game are overwhelming and it's just awesome :) I played so much great games with cool mechanics and graphics <3
Good job everyone and keep it up!
After a lot of struggle, we managed to complete (?) our first game with some authoral arts.

Okay so today I realised that in some cases the score system doesn't work properly. It is supposed to be impossible to get to the top of the screen and I just did it while playing it. Plus an introduction as a tutorial could be useful. Just some explanation on how the mechanics work.
Also I can see the possibilities hiding behind the idea. Guess I'll wait for extra feedback before sharing anything new. Before that, here some useful words :
If you didn't understant the concept, each time you receive a compliments you have 3 choices * You can ACCEPT the argument * You can REJECT it * You can KEEP QUIET until the next flattery
Be careful though as the main idea is to maintain balance between these choices. So you'll have to guess which answers are accepting compliments and which are rejecting them. Then it's all yours.
Of course I will add extra answers and improve the balance system as well. Until that, hope you'll have fun !
Guide a classroom of savage, scissor-wielding five-year-olds back to their desks safely! Be careful though, your actions can have dire consequences!
Try it here:(https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/running-with-scissors)

Hello again! We're less than 1 rating away from being scored! You could be the one to push us over that threshold:

Do check out our game, Coastal Postal, if you haven't already. All feedback is much appreciated! :)

Well the competition is all done now, and the game is getting spectacular reviews on the LD website, AND someone liked it so much they sent me $20! I thought I'd do a post-comp analysis of my experience.
The rush of having such a short time-limit was the best part. It was so exciting and made the whole weekend feel like a special event. Normally when I make games, (or music or whatever) I take it step by step and let it evolve and figure it out on the way. But having a time-crunch forced me to plan out just about everything beforehand. For those of you who know my artistic processes, you'll now how big of a deal that is. Of course, I think the ideal process is a balance between planning and discovery, but it is nice to know that I can go full on 'plan and execute' mode if I need to. Animating the characters and recording the voice acting with Mia Leigh Vance was by far the best parts of the process. Drawing and animating after hours of coding was so refreshing, and of course, anytime I get to work with Mia is time well spent.
Throughout the weekend, I repeatedly found myself with a total lack of how to code something. It was a very big reminder that I'm still a newb in this vastly unfamiliar environment. Too many times a precious hour or two was lost just googling how to fix something. The worst part of it is that I fixed 75% of the code problems by trial and error, and could not tell you what it was that fixed it. The bittersweet feeling of having fixed something, but not knowing why it was broken in the first place is a sensation I greatly dislike. That being said, I'm still very pleased with the code I produced. It is the most complicated and clean code I've written yet and that is something to feel good about.
It was 3 hours to the deadline and I hadn't completed half of the levels! AHH! Panic is a very mild term to use here. The game was supposed to have 30 short rounds with a little cutscene/dialogue between very third one. Throughout the weekend, I never once actually thought that I might fail the Dare, until this moment on Monday night. I looked at the clock, I looked at how many levels I had left, and I froze. For a long moment, I just sat there in front of all the work I did and considered what it would feel like to have to submit my game to the "unfinished" category. And my response to my thought experiement was "HELL NO." So I went into overdrive, cut 10 levels (cutscene every 2 levels) and published the game with 5 minutes left. 5 MINUTES LEFT.
I honestly believe that this weekend was one of the most exciting, thought-provoking, challenging, and fun creative processes I've ever been a part of. I will absolutely be doing this again (using my time more wisely next time). My biggest take away from this weekend was this: I LOVE MAKING VIDEO GAMES. Music, art, story, theatre, character, humor, animation. All coming together to create one experience for anyone willing to dive in. I'm in love.

So here we are, we finished our game jam with a somewhat buggy, but totally playable game. Robosseum is all about balancing your health and attack power. In short:
The less health you have, the stronger your attacks are!
Your job is simple, get to the big arena and defeat all the robots opposing your absolute power. We worked quite a lot on various enemies and attacks, defenses and a combat system that challenges the theme. ...and there are bugs...too many to count, nevertheless, we are mostly happy with the experience.

Here is a short teaser of what to expect:

(embedding doesn't work for youtube videos for some reason)

APPARENTLY 72 hours wasn't enough for me to polish the game. It was a great experience overall.
Sadly I couldn't achieve what I imagined.
If you feel like giving me some feedback on my game that would be really appreciated.

I have never seen such a big variety of original gameplay choices and game concepts! I'm having a blast playing through the entries.
Good job everyone! Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it
Sorry - I'm stupid ;-)
I misunderstood the voting and star rating... And I got a review which is hopefully based on my new awesome screenshots I created in the last hours...
Thanks for the clarification. You made my day (Or my night - It's already late here and I think I should go to bed now ;-)
I am learning so many things having participated in this Ludum Dare.
Including that the game only works if the data folder is present. Who knew that the information was not all saved in the .exe file itself?
Thank you to those who pointed that out!
Now playable on windows, I swear: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/runaway-magic

Hi Everyone!
It's been a hectic couple of days, but both Gustav @besmundu and I are super excited to showcase our first 'game jam'-game (ever). I'm actually super excited about how well it turned out and will definitely see this game come to fruition in a near future. Do you like gritty 80's sci-fi and computer, moody atmospheres or just fun, addictive (but challenging gameplay), then you've come to the right place :)
 :computer: PLAY THE GAME :computer:
take care, hope to hear from you soon!
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/theme-the-game

Some players of my game have requested clues, hints or even a walk-through of my gameplay, and I'm willing to oblige. But first, I want people to have the chance to experience and play my game without any clues. So, have at it, but only if you have a sense of humor. Thanks. Enjoy. :)
P.S. No downloads required.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/venny-is-in-trouble

When you read the FAQ it says you are allowed to do certain bugfixes. It would be really helpful to have some kind of FAQ telling what counts as a bugfix. It doesn't have to cover all possible changes but at least to give you an idea about it.
I for example would really like to change the controls for my entry so one can play with one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse.
Also I made some music and downloaded some sounds (public license) but when I tried to add them to my game it caused exceptions so I didn't implement them. I uploaded them with the zip anyway. Is it a bugfix to implement them or do I have to opt out for audio category?
I don't want to be cheating so I wanted to ask for your opinion. I know I can always upload a post compo version.
What do you think?
It's a known fact that dragons can grow really fast... so preserve yours from OBESITY or fly for your life !
You have 3 rounds to prove that you are not a stupid wizard who don't care about his dragon.

Woo! We got 20+ ratings on our game, thanks to everyone who rated / commented / tried our game, this is our first Ludum Dare and definitely won't be our last, great experience :)
Here is the link if anybody missed it!
Thanks again guys! Hope you all have had a great LD

Just for giggles, I decided to do an Android build of my game. So now you guys can hone your matrix maths skills while pooping!
You can find a link to it in the entry page. Obviously since it is not in from official store, the device will freak out and be like "omg, what are you doing trying to install some unknown apps" but will also tell you the instructions how to allow that.
As a special feature for our first jam, we've visualized our source control commit history! You can check it out below:

Remember when the future seemed bright and well animated like in Futurama? Well we've found out that that is not the case, a dystopia is in order and is going to mess up what you know about... about food and grammar I guess...
Play Grammar Dystopia and we'll probably be a little bit happier or a little less sad.

My game for ludum dare 40 is out! I actually released it a while ago. Anyways, if you haven't heard about it and want to check it out then play now!
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/penti

Here are the official rules directly pulled from the old site.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
Which cover is better ? I want to transmiss the absurd ambiance on my game, and I quite can't decide between this image :
which got the title on it
and this image :
which got text and rainbow background, and a little self-humoristic-trashtalk point because humility and being emo is a thing. The first is full assets from my game tho.. Asked some people already but still can't decide : Which one is better as a cover picture, to make people want to at least give an eye to the ld jam page of it ?
We have plans to post-LD our game to something even better and make a richer experience.
If you have a few minutes, please take some time to play this, but more than the ratings, we'd like some comments: How would you make this better, what were you missing while playing, did you found something frustrating, what was confusing, etc.
But whatever you do, don't put anything on this box!

Adding MacOSX and Linux Versions in addition to Windows.

The idea of a Top-Down Shooter that can switch instantly to FPS has been in my head for a while. This is just a bare bones try.. not even a game.. but I had a lot of fun doing it and it was my first JAM.

I've participated in the past three Ludum Dares (38, 39, 40) and it's nice to see how far I've come.

All of these games can be played here: https://ldjam.com/users/klekky/games
It would also mean a lot if you could play my LD40 game, Glutton's Heaven: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/gluttons-heaven
I'm interested to see other people's progress, especially if they've got pictures and/or have been doing this longer than I have. Feel free to comment here with some pictures.
If you haven't had a chance yet, give my game a shot!

It's my first ever game jam and I put a lot of effort into making everything from absolute scratch in 48 hours! I hope you enjoy and give some feedback!
Since we're so close to hitting the all important 20 ratings... I made a game play video to help drum up some interest. There are mild spoilers so don't watch it unless you want to learn the location of a few of the pickups.
If you find the video interesting and want to give our game a try then you can play it (on the web) by going to this link: https://asimovindustries.itch.io/slithering-secrets and please rate it afterwards. Leave a comment and I'll make sure to rate your game too! So without further ado here is the video:

Hey guys, the jam has been really fun. It would be awesome if we could get just a few more ratings to hit 20! This was my first time being the only programmer, so I've heard that there are bugs for only certain users, so I'm sorry if it doesn't run for you! It's basically hit or miss as to whether it'll fully function. Thanks for your support!

Trailer
Shroom Hunter is a game I made in 6 - 7 hours for the jam with GameGuru.
The objective of the game is to collect the magic mushrooms that grow in your forest and whack zombies and the evil forces that linger nearby.
It's a mix of an FPS and a chase / collection game with somewhat of a fantasy / Gothic feel.
Press E to begin in game, should of made that more obvious I think ahah
Any reviews will be returned, just going through other game at the min too
Peace and enjoy.

It's like Breakout meets Super Smash Bros. but with no combat. It's a two player game, so bring a friend along!

Hey everyone! This is my first Ludum Dare attempt and I would love it if I could get to the minimum 20 ratings! If you like building games, defense games, and/or clicker games, I hope you can give my game a shot!

Here is my submission: if someone feels friendly to set some rating to people that need that... :D I am the person you are looking for :v

Thanks everyone... and still enjoying game making.

My first ever Ludum Dare game, Knockback, is almost to the magical 20 ratings! I'd appreciate any little nudge to get it over the finish!

Some people including myself had a blackscreen issue with the HTML5 version. I assume it was because of the background color option. It should be working now. I still don't understand why it is stuck on the loading screen on GameJolt. That being said, you can now try Don't Grow Ego on itch.io
