Okay that title is maybe a bit overdramatic. This year, for the first time, I made a game where the player has to play on my server. It is a dungeon exploration, where players have to sacrifice themselves to make way for the next player.
But this post is not about the game. The first response I got on the game was positive and I was super happy, since I was happy with my game as well. But when I got home and reviewed the server logs, noone had played my game up to that point.
I spent a lot of time yesterday reviewing other games and writing thoughtful comments, which helped get my game ratings up to ~12. However, by looking at the server logs I can tell that about 4 people actually never played the game, people that probably have a lot more ratings, because they don't have to spend their time playing the game.
I think this is a really shitty practice from these "developers" on here and I wasn't aware that happens. Right now, I don't have the means to stop it. All I really want is genuine ratings and constructive criticism and I always believed this is, what this game jam was about. 48 hours of coding fun and a warm, helpful community (that part still exists of course, but has to share its place with these attention whores).
Maybe this post was enlightening for some people, like me, who didn't know this practice took place.
