Since people have been commenting positively on my games artstyle, I thought it would be cool to talk about how I made it. Procedurally generating art is something that I have always been very interested in, and I have created many different kinds of random character creators in the past.
People are usually surprised to learn that the type of procedural generation I do does not use any base art assets. The game actually has zero physical art files at all, all of the art is generated when you play the game directly from pure javascript code.
It is all basically randomization of proportions and positions of the things relative to each other. - Random head size - random body size. - The body is always a trapezoid of random dimensions with two legs at the bottom. - random face position - random eye distance and size - random eyebrow distance and curve - random mouth pose - random amount of hair strands - random length of hair strands - random width of hair strands - random curve style of hair.
But the coolest part is probably how it randomizes the head shape. There is a function I wrote called wobblyCircle that basically creates an imperfect circle - in a way it is mimicking a hand drawn circle.
Randomly mimicking hand drawn circles
I also wanted to give the head a randomized outline thickness that changed along the circle, but I found I didn't even need to do this directly. Instead I just draw a random wobbly circle in black, and then draw the regular head as a different random wobbly circle with an outline on top. The bottom black circle bleeds through different amounts in different areas which makes the outline look irregular.

The demons of the game use the same code as the townsfolk with a few modifications: - They are green - They have horns of random length - Their heads are way more wobbly - Their eyebrows are always angry

Because of the way the system was set up, I can easily change the facial expression by just changing a few values.
- When they attack, I can make the mouth open and the eyebrows angry.
- When they are scared, I can make the mouth sad, the eyebrows worried, and the eyes bigger and trembling
- And then when they die it is similar, but their eyes get smaller and their mouths are open

I really enjoy making procedural art, and I hope this was interesting. Feel free to let me know if you would like me to go in more detail about anything. Thanks!

Rocket of Souls - the game about how the sacrifice can change the civilization in the future.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW_qdAsd89c
The theme of Ludum Dare raises many interesting questions about the cost of innocent lives, about lost opportunities and resources. I decided to make a game about the destruction of The Earth and the last hope of finding a new home and create a new human civilization.
Imagine the last rocket on Earth, whose engine works on the energy of the souls of living beings. The best minds of humanity are in a containers, in a cryochambers. And the AI controls the rocket.
At the start, there is enough of energy to reach the goal... But in the path of the rocket, many asteroids arise. Each asteroid collision with a rocket increases the soul-fuel consumption. AI can shot to asteroids by the special cannon. But every shot requires the soul-fuel consumption.
And when the fuel becomes low, the AI is forced to get rid of a great people, to fill the reactor with the soul-fuel.
For whom are you willing to sacrifice? People of Art? Talented engineers? Great managers?
When the rocket reaches the destination, the people of the dominant profession will build a society that best suits their way of thinking.
Let's try to play my game to feel something important: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/rocket-of-souls

Hello everyone! As you may guess - I'm fairly new to GameJams. My first one was Brackeys game jam and I started small with a simple endless 2D Platformer. This time I tried to do something bigger. A 3D RPG. (Singleplayer obviously). But I fiddled around too much with the details and my artist got sick so I had to do that part as well. And that was half way through.
Anyways. About 7 hours before the finish line I decided to not publish my work in progress. It would be only cool to show off the features like mining, collecting mushrooms, combat system... But not really a fun game to play!
What do you think? Should I have published the game even at an unfinished state? As of now I'm still working on the game and adding features. Even more as planned for the jam. Mounts, fishing, cooking, crafting, advanced inventory system, equipment, items, upgrades, enchantments, fly routes, camera systems, spells/special abilities...
What else should be added to a good single player RPG? The story of course. But as this is some kind of template to base the actual game off, that doesn't matter yet.
Take a look at the screenshot and the Video if you would like to see what I made. :)

It's time to write a little postmortem about my LD43 entry.
This time I decided to skip using an existing engine and focus on using my own hand-made one codenamed Binocle. As usual this isn't a very good decision as it isn't a mature engine, but it's definitely a pleasure to work with. I've written it in from scratch in plain old C, using some common libraries like SDL and it gets the job done, but at the time I started coding the game it was still missing a lot of features.
I also wanted to settle for something with a Christmas vibe together with the compo theme, so I ended up with this "help Santa or the elves will be sacrificed" kind of play.
In the end I think I will use my engine again in the future. But this time I want to get ready a new sprite animation system, some spatial has collision code and sprite batching to ease the CPU when spawning particles and the like. And of course some scrolling code.. I still need to finish the camera implementation. Next time I hope I will have enough time to focus on the gameplay rather than the engine though :)

Arrange the elements harmonically to achieve Enlightenment, but beware the tricks of the Devil.
Each ingredient card represents a pair of primary elements. You need to arrange the elements to complete the magic circle. Same elements can be merged together (yes, like domino), you will win if the circle will be closed. But one thing you did not expect: this ritual needed a sacrifice. And if you have nothing to offer, you may be sacrificed yourself. Demon will try to interfere your ritual and to break out the circle. He has his own deck of ingredients, and he will add them, making your ritual impossible to finish. If you run out of cards, demon will take you.
