LD 43 November 30–December 3, 2018

I'm in! (or at least I'll try)

After missing the last two LDs I really have to get back in the game. Unfortunately I won't be able to exploit the full weekend and I'm still waiting to know if my artists friends will join me, but in any case I'll try my hardest to create something playable.

For the tools I'll probably use Unity, boscaceoil, bfxr, maybe Abundant Music if I can't pull off anything decent with boscaceoil. If I'm gonna be in charge of the art too, I'll probably end up using Inkscape or GraphicsGale.

Good luck everyone!

PS: and since it's 2am here and I'm sleepy as hell, I'll see you in the morning!

I'm In

The time is again upon us whence we shall go forth in the name of games for one short weekend. I too shall join in this grand venture, in hopes of creating something of worth - a game.

At my right hand, I hold Unreal Engine 4; at my left, Blender. With tools aplenty - those such as Krita and LMMS - I prepare for the coming onslaught.

I trust that I might stand firm. That in the end, I might truly be that singular person of accomplishment - the game developer.

Good luck to you all. I eagerly anticipate the results of your steadfast efforts, that I may rejoice with you in the triumph of your game well-made.

I'm ready for my first Game Jam

I'm going to participate in Ludum Dare 43, which is my first game jam! I'm real excited and ready to start.

I'm in?

People keep saying I'm in and I don't know if they're just saying it or you can only participate if you say it... I'm new to this.

I'm in!

LD43_Logo.png Got loads of ideas whatever the theme turns out to be, but I'm going to push for a game in the rare Grow genre ~ props to ON @ EyezMaze

My tools of choice for this one:

  • Unity (2017.4.6)
  • VS Code
  • Photoshop
  • 3DS Max
  • FL Studio
  • Audacity

I'll try to keep the repo updated on GitHub

Happy jammin' everyone!

Im in! Also a quick LD42 Post-Mortem

Im up for LD43!

But first I'm going to do a quick (and very late) post-mortem of my LD42 game 'Laser Rails: Chase' to see what worked and what I need to change this time around, as I find reflecting on a previous challenge is the #1 way to make sure youre developing and improving!

LD 42 in quick-review:

Pros - Had a game mechanic (the jetpack) which ended up being a lot more fun than expected, so it basically became the core mechanic

  • Scrapped a lot of features and mechanics, but still ended up with a game, which wouldnt have been possible without feature planning at the start

  • Didnt waste much time cooking. Lots of food prep and shopping done the day/night before the jam, which was a huge time saver! (also uber eats is nice for the occasional meal)

  • Pivoted from the original character design very quickly (was going to make human characters), couldnt get the inspiration or design working quick enough so I came up with a fun robot design very quickly instead, which was the main cyberpunk element in the game and turned out well

  • Endless terrain generation. Maybe spent too long on this, but it worked really well and I enjoyed how it turned out

Cons - Theme didnt apply very well. I had ideas for how it could, but didnt get around to executing them properly in time and rushed everything at the end - Should get the theme strongly present in the game asap

  • Scope was too large, but at least easy to cut back - Need to avoid blowing out the scope in future

  • Start area wasnt setup nicely, enemies attacking right away. Didnt give the player any chance to get to learn the controls and therefore the game was from the start not very intuitive - More planning and thought need to go into this, and perhaps a tutorial area (as I ended up making for the post-jam version)

  • Got stuck (again) on a code/physics issues for far too long, ie with the train physics which in the end werent that important to the game. Always happens! - Need to learn to compromise faster or identify problem mechanics/features quickly and find ways to do it quicker

  • Got sick. This was mainly from not looking after myself in the week lead up, didnt get enough sleep. Hit me hard on the first day of the jam which lead me to sleeping more than planned and feeling miserable for the first 24 hours, and pretty average for the 2nd day - Need to get more sleep in the leadup to a jam!

  • Audio/sound, wasnt happy with this at all, I ended up opting out of the category because I had to throw in sounds and music that werent mine. Definitely the main category I need to improve on and put more time towards when it comes to game design.

  • Food stuff: Could have snacked less, or had healthier snacks planned.

  • Exercise: planned on doing some, but due to being sick I didnt do anything physical during the gamejam. Hard to avoid if youre sick, I feel like this point would have been ok otherwise.

One of my goals is to do a gamejam healthily, so this is something I’ll be working on in future jams!

And finally rough stats for LD42, always interesting to see where the time goes and what can be improved

Looking forward to some gamedev this weekend - goodluck everyone!

My very first Ludum Dare!

I have joined a few game jams in the past, but never here! So, I hope to bring you a well made, fun and exciting game! Good luck to everyone involved!

Masked Ninja Games...

What do you people think about naming your team?

Is that a common thing to do? Me and my friend thought it would be cool to identify ourselves with a single name - our team's name. What do you think?

30 minutes left...

I'm probably going to sleep through the first few hours or so, but I can't wait to see what theme gets picked!

I'm In - 14th Time

Weird to think it's so many times!

As usual I will use Unity and my now-fairly-refined starter kit codebase.

For art I'll probably use Inkscape again, and for audio Reaper+VSTi into Audacity, or maybe even some foley.

There's a small chance I'll take a big risk and try 3D, and that would mean Blender.

Good luck everyone, and have fun!

First game jam, checking in with the apparently obligatory blog post. Ordering some dinner and settling in for a long night with Unity :)

I'm in! First time :)

Going solo for this one, kind of scared but excited! Had luck in a game jam at my uni so I'm going all in >:) GL HF all!

We.. are in

holy mackerel This is Nic and I's seventh Ludum Dare together as Gumboot :olderwoman: :olderman:

I think last Ludum Dare we didn't quite get where we wanted to with the game, we got bit by the big scope bug again. We are changing our design strategy a little bit this time around in mysterious ways.. we'll see how this works out
