LD 41 April 20–23, 2018

Waiting for the BATMAN

Hey there,

It's a pleasure to be here! We are a small team from Italy, we all teach game development in the same academy but we never worked together on a project. One of us has already participated in some ludums in the past, he can't wait to start and he's pretty contagious :-D

Bottom line: we miss the Batman and we are trying to understand if it is possibile to do a good show without him, whatever the hell that means :-D

Cheers!

Rather amazing how fun...

...an event can get, before it has even begun. ~~Once a lone wolf, always a lone wolf.~~ A first timer here. I'll be soloing. Looking forward, everyone.

I'm in!

Finally joining up again, it's been a while! I'll be using HTML5, JavaScript, Three.JS, and Howler.js.

I'm in!

I got my start doing game jams, and due to working a full time job and being a full time student it's been far too long since I've done one. I just graduated college (WGU) and I'm looking to get back into the game!

What's up with inconvenient superpowers though?

I've participated in five Ludum Dares so far, this will be my sixth, and in every single theme voting, the theme "Inconvenient Superpowers" was always there. Someone must be really determined to post the same theme everytime 😀

Oh boy. Round 3!

Well, this will be my third time participating in Ludum Dare! I'm extremely excited to get started again. I'll be doing the Compo portion of the event.

Here is my toolset;

Engine: Unity

Art: Photoshop CS6

Music: Bocsa Ceoil or Beatbox or possibly LMMS if I feel adventurous.

Energy: Coffee. Way. To. Much. Coffee.

Also, I will be attempting to stream on Twitch again this time! If you would like to hop on you can over at twitch.xeinix.me!

Good luck to everyone participating, and lets have fun making games!

Friendly reminder

As usual, here is your reminder that IT SPREADS is the correct theme choice. Why, you ask?

Because Ludum Dare is...

A JAM

What happens when we reach Ludum Dare 48

seriously will we get some kind of celebration or are we just going to pretend that the number 48 has nothing to do with this jam whatsoever

Woah Already Round 3? Alright! Opinion!

Ok, I must be completely stupid. Didn't realize Rounds started 18 o'clock here. OK, well. Into the final Round we go before the Ultimate Stages of voting.

  • *(-1)You're doing that genre wrong: *Simply a more terrible version of "You shouldn't mix those".

  • *(0)Fragile: *Don't like one-word themes. This one, in particular, however, can be interpreted in a few different ways. Fragile... objects? world? people? Good Ideas from this theme just not really my thing.

  • *(0)You can't save them all: *A slightly limiting theme that can, however, cause for some interesting mechanics to be created. Whether I like the fact that it suggests that you can't 'win' the game, I'm not too sure of, however.

  • *(0)Three Rules: *Weird one. I would have preferred two rules as that would've made for some tighter gameplay. 3 rules sounds a bit too much though. In general, it's slightly gimmicky and can be very confusing in execution and implementation I feel.

  • *(-1)The world will end in 5 minutes: *Suggests a scenario. No thank you.

  • *(-1)One button 2 functions: *Doesn't allow for a whole lot of flexibility. In this case "Two Buttons" is a better theme.

  • *(-1)Labyrinth: *How exactly did this theme make it through again? One word. Boring.

  • *(0)Unconventional Movement: *Kind of like it. It's a decent theme to base one game around. Only issue is for people who dont want to make a game that has movement in it (card games for example), so quite a limiting theme.

  • (-1)Manipulate your enemies: *Similar to "Learn from your enemies" except this is a straight up mechanic (THIS IS NOT A THEME*)

  • *(-1)Tiny Machines: *Remember this one last time around too. Still hate it. Too specific. Most concepts will be out of scope. Not made for a 48-hour compo.

  • *(-1)A hidden world: *What is it with themes about worlds? We already had "Small World" for LD38 stop suggesting these.

  • *(-1)Automation: *Most ideas will be out of scope. Again, not a bad theme but nigh on possible in 48 hours by one person.

  • *(-1)60 seconds: *Gimmick theme. "Short Rounds" or "Short Turns" would've been better

  • *(-1)Combine 2 incompatible genres: *Worse than "You're doing that genre wrong" which is worse than "You shouldn't mix those", no thanks.

  • *(0)You don't play as the main character: *I can see some interesting ideas from this. The only problem is that it's slightly limiting.

  • *(-1)At the beginning there is nothing: *How poetic of you Sir. Slightly confusing whether "You start with nothing" still counts. As I can't trust myself or this theme it's getting a down.

Well, thanks again for reading through (if you did). The last set of themes is upon us and oh god I am terrified. Only 2 themes stuck out to me so far: "The environment changes you" and "You shouldn't mix those". If either of these themes win I will be a very, very, very happy little boy. But we'll probably get Labyrinth. Anyway see you at the starting line!

How to tackle LD41!

Hello Ludumites,

I’ve been told I pronounce LudumDare wrong, but regardless of this fact – check out my latest development log for some of my top tips on participating in a game jam!

Probably very limited time, but anyway...

I'll try to see if I can get something running one way or another ^^

Plan on trying out Phaser 3 and I'd also like to implement some simple backend in php, for either highscore or multi-player in a way :)

But I have a baby and some plans, so we'll see what happens ^^ Maybe a baby game xD

Joining in for the 5th(?) time

It gets hard to keep track of which LD's I've participated in, but I think 5 is a good guess.

I'll be joining in using one of two engines, depending on what my weekend looks like. That will be either Game Maker Studio 2, if I'm strapped for time, or the basic LD-ready HTML5 starter kit I developed last year.

As for the tools I'll (probably) use: - Graphics Editors: Aseprite, ClipStudio Paint - Music/Sound production: Famitracker, BFXR, Audacity - Level Layout (If required): Tiled - Design Tools: A nice big stack of sticky notes, a notebook and a pen.

Good luck to all other participants! :coffee:

First time here

Hello. This is my first Ludum Dare  . I have made some games but not like this. I am using: Blender for modeling and photoshop. Then i am using Unity 2018. For music i use Bosca Coil / FL studio 13

Good luck to evryone 👍.

Happy Chiptune

I've been planning to make some better music this LD. Good music is a thing most of my games lack, so I've been practising by making this Happy Chiptune in Bosca Ceoil (would recommend this tool btw; been using it since my first Ludum Dare).

Write Your Game in Go

All set!

I'll be using Quick (github.com/quick-developers/quick), a simple ES6-friendly Javascript game library. I will also be live coding (either Twitch or Youtube live) for a good portion of the competition. So give me a follow!

I should also mention that, man, this website design is confusing. I have two friends who were also considering to participate and weren't able to find their way to get more information. That kinda drove them away. Maybe ldjam.com should consider a redesign?

Happy coding, everyone!

How to delete game?

I accidentally created a game (a page for a game, I just called it LD41, its like a placeholder) already, but I don't see any option to delete it.

Just before the next event!

Hello fellow game jammers!

9 months ago we created game called Godly Corp and today it is on Steam Store! Bellow ↓ is comparison between LD version and current version.

◙▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ STEAM ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬◙

GodlyCorpLDComparision.png

Please add our game to Steam Wishlist and we promise you one of the most hectic games you will ever play!

We got ton of useful feedback from you guys and encouragement, without Ludum Dare community we wouldn't get Godly Corp on Steam.

The concept got expanded on A LOT. Every game in level has a different mechanics. Expect everything including chainsaw robots, bug infestation, space trips and more.

Thank you very much, good luck with your projects and keep on making those cool games!
