LD 41 April 20–23, 2018

I'm in, well, maybe

I don't know if I'll be able to code a it this weekend, or at all. Just in case: I'm in.

I will use plain C++ with SFML and one of my frameworks: potato-framework or Fluffy (both still in development, for years, hum). For audio and sound it will be Audacity and sfxr. Gimp/toshop and Inkscape/illustrator for graphic stuff.

Hope to be in with you guys!

IM IN

Despite upcoming A-Levels I'm still in, because I've competed in 13 Ludum Dare's consecutively.... So I kinda feel obliged now.

I'm super excited, I'm gonna be using C++ and OpenGL this time around (I can't be bothered to write an engine ;( ).

Finally i'm gonna post this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vxYUr9e-GY

that sound track video was made by Joe Williamson, and inspires me EVERY SINGLE ludum dare, so for those newbies ( :P ), go check it out :) :).

I'm In!!

This is my first Ludum Dare and I can't wait! I will be using Unity.

I'm so in!

This will be my very first LD ever and I am super excited! I will use Twine and my cat will be my moral support, because you know. Cats. ;)

Hoping To Make Something

Been looking forward to this Ludum Dare, but I'm not sure how much I'll be able to participate. Some important projects are due the week after, so I'll probably have to work on those for most of the weekend, but I'll try to make some time to participate in the jam.

If I do I will most likely be using Löve2D for programming and either Gimp or FireAlpaca for graphics. Sound will be... I'm not actually sure at this point and music, if my past attempts are anything to go by, will likely not be present.

Persistence is key

Hello there, I thought I'd share my story about game jams!

Since I was very young, I was obsessed watching others via social platforms doing their entry for various game jams. I've always dreamed that one day I will be participating to such events. Yet as time passed by, it seems no opportunity came to me where I was encouraged to assist to these events.

It was only on a hot summer, 4 weeks before LD39 that I have decided that I will participate in the game jam! At the time, I only had a college diploma in computer science and no prior knowledge whatsoever in game design, making art, programming games and making sounds/music (actually I used to play the piano a lot as a kid).

I tried absorbing as much information as I could. For art, I started drawing one canvas per day and try to participate to events like Pixel Dailies. My first drawing were terrible. I kept trying until I was able to express an idea on paper.

I picked up game maker studio (Unity did not cross my mind at the time) and I have practiced, did all the tutorials and free lessons I could get my hands on until I got the hang of the basics.

Here is some early samples of my drawings, I made some small canvas pixel art

Here are some of my best drawings before LD40, where I tried animations and larger scale projects: received_2250873031605070.gif

I even live streamed my first LD, not knowing whether I will even be able to do anything.
Turns out that not only the Ludum Dare went well, but the score was satisfying for a first entry as well. I felt proud, I felt that I should of not doubted myself all these years and pick it up, practice and try. Now that I'm on my way to my 3rd Ludum Dare, I always try to improve and do better than my past entries. There is always a stress that comes with it, a worry in the back of my head wondering if I'll live up to my past entries and not fail miserably.

Something I wish I would do more often, and this should go for all as well: Do not stop working on your project after a game jam. No more time management to think about, keep polishing it, by improving it and actually take a look back at your project you can really analyse your critical thinking and see where you could of done things better.

I have already wrote a few weeks earlier that I'm in for this Ludum Dare. This message is more for motivate and tell people who are hesitating to begin to actually go for it. Try, even if it doesn't work out, you will have learned something about it. I'm looking forward for this event once again, regardless of the theme, it's about making the best out of the given situation!

TL;DR: You learn much more by trying than by watching others. Do not wait for someone to tell you when to take the leap and start doing game jams. I waited, thinking I'll be ready some day. But what is ready? There is no such thing as ready, there is always room to improve for everyone. And we all started attending game jams more or less the same way: taking that leap and drown yourself into a sea of learning.

For those wondering what tools I use for game jams are the following: - Game Maker Studio 2 - Pyxel Edit - Fl Studio 12 - Bfxr

As previous game jams, I will be live streaming this event. Albeit, the stream isn't too exciting, since 48 hours definitely takes it's toll on me over time. You can find me on these platforms:

Best of success to all, I'm rooting for the whole lot of us!

Never stop learning!

I'm in!

Going to use UE4 for my first LD

Question about Base code

I'm working on another hobby game to try to get myself in the right headspace for Ludum Dare, and there are a lot of really helpful "libraries" that I've created that I'd like to use in the finished project. Most of these are just common problems that I might encounter (9-slicing, tweening, sound management, etc.) Should I post them publicly, or can I just use them? I'll like to them in a Gist or something similar if that's good practice.

LUDUM DARE DISCORD(1200+ MEMBERS)

I’m ieyfo, I run the Discord for Ludum Dare it was stared back for LD36 and we have grown as a community to over 1200+ members and growing more everyday. I personally love the community we have formed and I want you to become a part of it :).

Last Ludum Dare was amazing 500+ new people and so many good chats and opinions. We hope to continue this for the next Ludum Dare. The main goal of the discord is not to just chat but grow LD as an event. There are millions and millions of game developers yet so few participate in LD when it’s already huge. SO LETS MAKE IT BIGGER. We can use the server as a way to show other game devs what there missing from not participating in LD.

Last Ludum Dare we were asked to partner with crowdforge.io and now there Ludum Dare area has a direct link too our discord.

All the mods and Mike himself are in there so why not join?

Why Discord and why my discord for LD?

First I know many people loooveeee IRC well for you if you don’t wanna switch don’t that is up to you but know change is happening and more and more people are switching over every day. I think now is a good time to join us :).

Next Discord is an amazing place with voice chat, video chat, screen share, all super fast and better than anything Iv’e ever used. Also discord is amazing for sharing project assets or anything you wanna no need to link images like IRC just paste them in. You’re not just a name and a string of text you are you and people can easily get to know you.

Next why to join our discord well we are the biggest 1200+ strong and growing. In a non biased opinion the most fun and organized discord with section and channels for everything you could need whether you’re doing Ludum Dare or game development or programming in general we got you!

We hope to see you there V INVITE LINK https://discord.gg/kwSW9SR

First Jam.. I'm in! Help!?

Hey y'all, I'll be participating.

I don't have much experience so I'll probably be using unity to keep things very simple.

This is my first jam, my sum total experience was making a flappy bird-esque clone in unity to learn the tool a couple of years ago.

I've done some basic prep but would love to hear tips for making sound effects and music I've messed with boscaceoil for music a little but I'm making complete trash.

Does anyone have learning resource recommendations for me to look at for music and sound creation before the jam starts?

Tools: Pyxel Edit, boscaceo, sfxr, Unity.

I'm aiming to have something that resembles a game completely hopefully with a fun core mechanic, if I manage anything beyond that i'll be super stoked.

Long Time Lurker, First Time Jammer!

This is my first Ludum Dare -- so far the best thing has been all the cool tools people are using to make assets -- I still have no idea what my stack will be for making my game (probably just straight up JavaScript / HTML5 with some libraries like Phaser or A-frame) but I'll figure that out when I know what the theme is!

My goal will be to actually build something small that works -- when I make my own games I usually get stuck on getting the assets right; but I'll have to just make something hideous to start and go from there...

Chaoslab /wave

Hello everyone. Looking forward to #LudumDare 41.

  • Platforms: Windows, iOS and maybe Linux (still debugging my code base).
  • Language: Java.
  • IDEs - Eclipse, Eldian (code generation, gui design, sprite sheets, sprite animation) and Notepad.
  • Graphics: 2D Pixel Art - Paint Shop Pro.
  • Music and SFX: Ableton.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Crochet (preferably UV active yarn).
  • Controls: Gamepad, Mouse and Keyboard.
  • Inspirational Refreshment: Wellington Chocolate Factory.

Will probably be making another 2D pixel art arcade game of some sort.

More than likely Jamming than doing the 48h.

Good luck everyone!

Kinda Getting Scared Now....

Woah! These themes are tough. Kinda reminds me of the theme last LD. I really had a hard time coming up with an idea and sadly, I wasn't able to submit a game :(

Hopefully, the theme this time will be great!

I'm In!

I missed the deadline last time and was so so sad. I'll do my best to hit it this time!

GameMaker, Aseprite, Ableton Lite, bfxr, trail mix, energy drinks, microwave tamales, and a positive attitude. YES!

Practicing for The Ludum Dare!

I'm getting some practicing in for the Ludum Dare since I'm in PyWeek right now. ^-^ Unfortunately I'm going to skip the last 2 days of PyWeek so I can enter the Ludum Dare.

I'm having fun practicing with VFX right now. Pygame has pretty much no support for VFX, you gotta make everything yourself. gif_5.gif

Looking forward to the LD! :D

I'm In!

Ready for my first game jam.

I'm in but...

First time in LD. A little bit confusing of how to create a game for LD41. In "My Game" I can't find where to choose Compo or Jam.

I'm in.

I've participated three times but only completed one game. I intend to finish this time.
