LD 41 April 20–23, 2018

Write Your Game in Go

I'm happy that i am in again.

Hello again, this will be the third time where i join LD. Since LD39 i am now in.

I really hope that i have some good idea when the theme is announced.

I am in!

Like a lot of people this is my first Ludum Dare, i will be using GameMaker for the code, BeepBox for the music and Piskel for the art.

Looks like we're in!

Still waiting to hear back from one more, but looks like we got the LD38 gang back together again. Barring complications: We're in!

Theme Voting Round 1: Opinion!

Hello Everyone! As the first round of voting has started I wished to share my opinion on each theme.

  • *You are the Weapon: *An interesting theme to say the least. I think one can look at this theme quite metaphorically which is why I think this is a much better theme than something like "You are the enemy". The only issue is that it seems to be more of a mechanic than an actual theme. So it gets a +-0

  • *Deja vu: *No thanks. For one this theme should have been worded better (something like "Hang on, I remember this") so it's easier to understand. In general, it's a pretty poor theme where I could barely think of any basic concepts and the ones I did were WAY out of scope. -1

  • *Learn from your enemies: *One of those themes where I scratch my head thinking, "Don't you learn from your enemies in nearly every game ever made that has some form of an enemy?". -1

  • *A light in the dark: *Not a fan of themes that suggest a place or scenario. Also "Light" is a theme, "Dark" is a theme "A light in the dark" is not a theme. -1

  • *Floating Islands: *Same thing with it suggesting a place/ scenario. Also similar to a previous theme (Islands) -1

  • *Self-Replication: *I can see this one being very divided amongst most people, personally I think it's just too specific and most of the ideas I came up with were out of scope. -1

  • *The Environment changes you: *At first I had the same thought as "Learn from your enemies" but after some thinking, I came to the realization that there can be quite a few different takes on this theme. Its also pretty wide as "Environment" can be interpreted as: Place, Weather, Condition etc. Nice theme +1

  • *Same level, different challenges: *Not going to lie, this theme still confuses me. It's either a pretty interesting theme, the same thing as "One Room" or has the same problem as "Learn from your enemies. Had to give it +-0 therefore.

  • *It Spreads: *I like the idea that 'it' is anything you want it to be, however not a lot of things can actually 'spread' so this theme is actually somewhat limiting. Still gave it +-0

  • *Progress will make you weaker: *Sounds like a game that should have been made for the last LDJam -1

  • *Only one light source: *Still kind of on the fence with this one. On one hand, I can see quite a few different interpretations of this "one" light source, on the other hand, I feel like a lot of games are going to play very similarly . +- 0

  • *Death helps you: *Not sure whether I'm reading this wrong, but sounds like any game ever made. Death helps a player because now they know how not to die... Am I seeing things incorrectly? -1

  • *Everything is a weapon: *More specific version of "You are the weapon" +- 0

  • *Four elements: *Half of all games are going to be on greek mythology or some sort of resource collection/ management. Still I think some interesting ideas can come from this +- 0

  • *Unusual Magic: *This can be a pretty fun theme to mess around with. To be honest out all of these this one may be my favorite. Lots of things can come out of it. It also doesn't state what magic, just a kind of magic so nearly all games will most likely be unique. +1

  • *Indirect Player control: *What masochistic crazed person suggested this? This isn't a "fun" or "interesting" theme this is pure torture. -1

Phew. That was quite some writing. Anyway, hope you liked this lengthy post. As you can see, just like last time I'm not too hopeful that we'll get a good theme. Might as well prepare for "indirect player control" and "Floating Islands".

Where are the themes?

Am I the only one thinking that most of those themes are not really game themes but more Elements or even general game content? Some are like "Create a game" others are like "Create a game without content"... When I think about themes I used to think about themes like "An unconventional weapon" or "A classic upside down" or something like this... It should be something giving room for interpretation but alos showing a direction. Not things like implement a magic wand within any game... I hope you can understand what I am writing about... I think the quality of many many theme suggestions was very crappy.

Oh: Not specifically talking about the Theme Voting. I am talking about ALL themes... My personal Anti-Favorites were "Sperm", "Ludum Dare" and something like "Game" iirc...

HYPE (but...)

Can't wait to get started, but pretty disappointed looking at the selection of themes. But there shines a shiny beacon of hope. I will make the greatest game about buttering toast there has ever been.

Democracy is overrated anyway, vote 'It Spreads'.

I'm in !

Hi everyone ! This is my first time in a Jam, I hope this will be okay :)

I am in for LD41

This time planing to learn and use new game engine. Currently evaluating Godot3 or Unreal4, seems great engines.. Mostly joining to learn new stuff like shader, AR/VR that will be the LD41 mission. Guessing the theme will decide.

Hello Fellow Devs

Hi guys! This will be my first time participating and I'm getting excited. I have seen and heard Ludum Dare since LD39 and I finally have the guts to participate this year, Goodluck to all of us

I'm in!

Third time participating and (hopefully) my third game made for Ludum Dare. Although I do have a test on monday, so I might not make the BIGGEST and GREATEST game of all time, but I'll think of something for sure!

Ludum Dare 41 is THIS WEEK! Theme Selection on now!

That's right, Ludum Dare 41 is coming up in just a few days. Take a look to the right of this post for exactly when it starts (*cough* on desktop anyway, sorry Mobile).

You can visit the event homepage here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41

You can check out the list of Real World Gatherings in this thread here:

:earth_americas: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/$73264/real-world-gatherings-for-ludum-dare-41

Theme voting is also on. You can find the latest round here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/theme

That's it for now. Be sure to come back for new rounds. Final Round kicks off Wednesday night (or early Thursday if you're in an EU timezone). Also, I hear the keynoter has created something pretty epic, so stay tuned for that.

PS: My apologies there aren't new features from me this time around. I had to spend the past couple months looking for work.

EDIT: Want to try GameMaker Studio 2? We have free licenses available to use during Ludum Dare 41.

I'm in for the fourth time!

So get ready to receive updates like 'Things are going slower than expected' - as is tradition. I'll continue to use Godot since it served me well, I'll go with version 3.0.2. Regarding art I'm not sure what I'll do yet. Might be Aseprite, Krita or Paint.NET. I haven't done any game dev since my last LD so... 8 months? This will be fun. I would like to go with really simplistic art this time and focus more on content so that's my goal. I wish everyone good luck and have a blast!

Another LD another Challenge

I hope this LD make a game with more quality and more fun, maybe this jam i work in team with @ponchu, well good luck for everyone have fun and drink a lot of coffee <3 xD

GameLabs updated!

Good evening! I've added new features to my Unity visual scripting extension for jammers, GameLabs. Also, some game-breaking bugs were fixed. It's open-source, so you're free to use it for your own LD game!

Constantly being logged out

Is anyone else having SERIOUS trouble with the website logout bug? Literally I'm having to sign in every few seconds, every time I load a page, click a theme to vote, etc. It's driving me insane because this is one of the ONLY sites that will not remember my login, so I have to type the whole thing every time. I get the message that tells me it's a bug, and I know this site is still pretty new and being worked on, but is there any way to avoid this? It's driving me crazy!

Self-unemployed step 1: Enter Ludum Dare

Hot on the heels of Meta Game Jam, I'm very excited to be doing my second Ludum Dare.

I'll be tracking my progress on Twitter, so come say hi! I'm dead keen to see what other people are going to get up to. I've gone full-time indie now, after years of going to university and doing a 'normal' job, but I reckon I can still hang with you whippersnappers.

Stay radical, see y'all at the weekend.

Luckily, I am in again!

I originally thought Ludum Dare was during a robotics competition, but luckily LD is a week before.

I’ve been in since LD 30!

I’m in for the 12th time in a row!

Last LD I tried using Unity, and it was a terrible idea. Unity, at least for me, is terrible for quickly prototyping and making stuff quickly.

Language and Library: Java with Lib-GDX, or just normal Java 2D

Graphics: Paint.NET, Piskel, Inkscape

Music: LMMS, maybe Abundant Music or Bosca Ceoil. Depends on how much time I have left

SFX: Might use SFXR if I have time or just Audacity.

Joining LD41!

Hey my dudes! This LD is right in the middle of the end of school + finals week for me, so I may not be able to do much. I'm still planning on throwing something together though. This should be fun! I'll probably use Unity, Aseprite, and Bosca Ceoil.

We're in again! :D

We’re in again! :D it’s been a while, but I’m preparing! :D We’ll be using Game Maker, because it’s faster, Gimp for sprites and textures, and we’ll use FL to make music which is new for us, and audacity for recording if needed! Looking forward to chill with this awesome community again! <3
