How to help everyone improve their own behavior (not limited to LD)
Just explain them what is a good behavior and why :)
When I first entered LD in December, I had a hard time understanding how everything works. To be honest I probably still don't.
When I look at people who ended up in top 100 for LD41, some of them don't understand that JAM and COMPO have a different ranking.
I saw people on youtube participating in LD for the first time and when the time came to submit their game, they didn't know if they should post in COMPO or JAM. The person ended up posting in "unfinished" and now has 0 ratings, when his game clearly showed some talent, and all he needed was encouragement to continue.
There are a lot of other examples, and I'm sure many of you can relate to a certain extent. And you know what, it's not their fault. These people have good intentions, like everybody else.
We should focus on informing the newcomers.
Because they are the ones who need the information, they want to listen, and they are open-minded. Explain them what LD is, why it was created, what is the spirit of the event, what are the rules and why, and so on. Maybe a video documentary ? I don't know ! But it has to be fun. Maybe a game ?? This place is full of game designers, I'm sure we can make it instructive AND fun. I like the idea of little badges and rewards, but it would also create some kind of hierarchy, with the newcomers at the bottom, and I don't like this idea that because you just arrived in the community people give you less credit.
Of course, we should all try to be exemplary.
But if you are here reading this feed, it's because you care, so I'm sure you are already doing everything you can. We might all have our own reasons to care ? Maybe if we share those reasons, we can get everyone on board with us ?
Here is my top 3 reasons why I love LD
1) You guys are awesome, seriously. If you've played some mobas, you know what a toxic community is. This community is at the other extreme. Comments are positive, constructive, creative, clever, encouraging, caring ... It's the social environment everybody on this planet would need to be the best version of themselves, learn, share, and love each other. It goes well beyond LD in my opinion.
2) Feedback. Lots of quality feedback. Peer review is in my opinion one of the best ways to learn from each other, and give back by teaching others too. It's also very scalable. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the #1 education tool in a near future. I'd love to hear your opinion on the matter as it's still very new all things considered.
3) Fun ! We are all here to create and play each other's games after all :) It's all about creating innovative concepts, experimenting, having fun together, and releasing all that fun into the world for free. How cool is that ?
Sorry for the long post, here are potato games for you :

Just wanted to make a post-mortem to maybe help others looking for art direction in future projects.
Sketching something out is CRUCIAL. Because until you do you have no idea how the idea in your mind will play out. Also, you can now actually direct the rest of your team towards your vision.
Because of the keyframe we were able to fine-tune the perspective of the camera and world early-on.
So now things are in place! Magnefique! Now let's look at polish.
Once the main art had wrapped up and Josh was chugging through finishing the dialogue system, I wanted to fine-tune the environment and simulate the passage of time by creating a day-night cycle. Together we were able to polish everything from the lighting to the textures to the little ripples the kettle left behing in the water.
