Bunker Down - Trying something different

Usually when making a game I try to stay away from having to draw anything because it's not what I'm best at. However with Bunker Down I wanted to challenge myself so I decided to try my hand at pixel art. All things considered I think it came out pretty well, there are things I'd like to improve such as the game end screens. That said the visuals are clear and emotive so I am happy with what we produced.

Check out our game here and let me know what endings you get:

Development secrets in Alchemist Dungeon. Minimap

This post inspired by @noah-beckman question about how made the minimap in this game

So, let's start answering

First of all, the game zone is the matrix of tiles [N+2,N+2], where N - is dungeon size, so it makes easier to create level map. After the generation of dungeon I use loop [0..N+1,0..N+1] to create a level texture [N+2,N+2] pixels, which will be used later. Blue pixels shows walls and white - free space. Also I create a black fog of war texture with same size.

Next, the step-by-step explanation of map creation called every frame: 1. Copy level texture created earlier 2. Loop [0..N+1,0..N+1] to add info about exit and gas locations 3. Add the location of the player by transforming the coords with Mathf.Round function 4. Apply the changes for level texture copy 5. Loop [0..N+1,0..N+1] and calculate the distance between pixel and player coords. If it less than 5, set current pixel on fog or war texture to blank 6. Apply the changes for fog of war texture 7. Create blank texture [N+2,N+2] pixels 8. Loop [0..N+1,0..N+1] to fill created texture with combinig info of two previous textures. If fog of war pixel is black, add the black pixel, otherwise add the pixel from level with objects texture 9. Apply changes and transform to sprite 10. Show the sprite in UI

Give me your tired, your poor, your rapidly produced games yearning to be rated

and I will do my best to play and rate/leave detailed feedback before I head to bed for the night. I've played so many great games this week that I otherwise might have skipped or not noticed thanks to people sharing their games with me. If you'd like me to take a look at your game please drop a link below and I'll get right onto it.

If you'd like to return the favour and check out our game you can do so here.

Graphs of how I've spent my time during the Jam

Now note that this was my first jam (and second ever game published), so I can't say I've managed my time really that well :). I hope you will find it pretty interesting, though :D.

Also, in the timezone I am in, the jam started and ended at 1 AM (submission time until 2AM, theoretically, but we all know what happened).

By the way, the colors sadly don't match from one image to another, so you will have to look closely. This data was taken from RescueTime, a time-tracking software.

Day 1: As you can see I did not really code that much (Studio64 is the IDE), and I wasted some time on the web. DAY 1.png

Day 2: Instead of sleeping at night, I took some time and played SA-MP (San Andreas Multiplayer) with my friends (who were not in the jam). Also, I didn't really focus that much during the day, because as you can see it has a lot of Reddit and YouTube through it. DAY 2.png

Day 3: PANIC MODE. 100% focused during the day. So focused, actually, that I forgot to drink water. This didn't really end up well, since I got a pretty bad headache, but even then I didn't stop. DAY 3.png

Day 3.1: Still in panic mode. One interesting thing that you may notice is that between 1-2 AM (submission time ended at 2AM) I was still programming. This was due some pretty bad time planning (as you've seen in the previous images) and I still had pretty important things to do. Now, after 2AM I stopped working (besides fixes in the following days), because I did not want to cheat, even though the game was not feature complete (if there is such a thing). However, it was playable, and this is what matters. DAY 3.1.png

And here is the end result. I am actually very happy with how the game turned out, despite a lot of poor planning :). I'd appreciate if you would give some feedback on it. I have enough ratings (>40), but more feedback can't ever hurt :D. 195d8.png

Should i make a post jam release?

Well after the jam i was thinking... A lot of people liked my game but they are getting torchered by many bugs in the game.i was thinking if people want to have my game as a full realease with more levels and better boss fight and of course less bugs.will you download it?(for free?)because currently im free in time and im getting a lot of good comment!let me know Here is my game!check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/the-red-pixel

Looking for something *different*?

Why not try CLAUSTRO, an entirely unique game! It's the only 8bit-monochrome-2D-topdown-3rd-person-HTML-arcade-crossword-puzzle you've ever seen! Probably.

main.png

Legal notice: Blinkenlights does not take responsibility for repetitive viewing of Blinkenlights commercials. 8bit-monochrome-2D-topdown-3rd-person-HTML-arcade-crossword-puzzle is not a Blinkenlights trademark and may be freely used. Marketing is serious. Sometimes.

I made my game playable on mobile devices

My compo game Leaving Room is now playable on mobile devices. The mobile friendly version is available on itch.io, while the original 48h version is here.

Although it is a WebGL game, it is still not easy for porting. I implemented this game in rust and a half-done engine by myself. All the rust code were compiled to JavaScript (asm.js) to run in browser. I needed to modify some engine code and adjust the layout for touch screen.

cover.png

Mobile OSes have some limitations. I feel PC has a better gaming experience for my game.

Except for rust and emscripten compilation toolchains, other tools are:

  • inkscape (for image creation)
  • LMMS with GeneralUser GS (for background music)
  • atom

Hope you enjoy my storytelling puzzle game!

"Running out of RAM" is a clicker wanna be game for C64. People, who played it, say it's a nice sim game. Either works for me.

It's a C64 game entirely written in BASIC V2, where you are a student with your first development job: program a video collection management software for your father's friend. You need to write code, debug, sleep and more. Need some money? Why don't sell some cracked games to your friends?

System_Corruption is not the worst game ever

I wasn't super happy with this game, people seem to like it (or just trying to be polite, idk). One thing that everyone seems to agree on is that the main mechanic of navigating through the maze with the help of sounds is quite interesting. While I like it, I regret that I wasn't fast enough to implement an alternative accessibility option. And some low-res textures would be nice as well. Would you like to try it out? I'm very interested in the feedback!

Since Ludum dare ended we have also added real A* for the enemies and bullet collision to the game giving it a more tactical feel. This patched version is going live right after the results have been posted, so stay tuned! We may also find the time to create a few more maps that uses the new mechanics to the fullest until then. 🤗🤗

Cosmic Collapse - A Post-Mortem

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/cosmic-collapse

loveem2018-08-13/em15-47-28.png

Gonna be honest: "Running out of space" was not a theme that immediately stirred the muse. All things considered, though, Cosmic Collapse turned out much better than I was expecting: the game was fully implemented to my satisfaction, and it ended up (accidentally) fitting the theme as well!

When first confronted with the theme, my mind immediately went to strategy games: "you're stuck on a shrinking landmass, trying to gather as many resources as fast as possible before you run out of room." I considered a couple of variants on this before I realized I was probably better off not trying to make something as complicated as a strategy game; however, thinking about the theme itself, a punny approach came to mind: I could make a game involving running, and set it in space. Hence the concept for Cosmic Collapse. Funnily enough, it ended up fitting the theme anyway, as you're always running out of breathing room: the ships taper off, giving you less room to maneuver, and the wall of annihilation dogging your footsteps approaches faster and faster, giving you less room for error.

I drew most of my art assets before I actually started coding; most notably, I got the "ship breaking up" effect implemented before any of the actual gameplay. (I know, I know, serious "cart before the horse" here, but the better my games look, the more motivated I feel working on them.) All the art was done in Aseprite; the spaceman, however, was also animated using Spine, an awesome program for making puppet-style 2D animations. Sound effects were created using Bfxr and Audacity, and the music loop was made with Bosca Ceoil. I tried to keep the sound effects and music on the quiet side so they would have impact without being annoying; I've had a bad habit in the past of making games with really annoying in-your-face sound, so I decided to err on the side of caution this time.

One funny bug that had me stumped for a couple hours involved the player suddenly failing to collide with objects for no apparent reason. When I tracked down the source of the glitch, I couldn't believe how dumb I'd been: my collision routine was checking whether collidable objects were between the player's last frame position and their current frame position, but the way the player's movement math worked out, if you were running at top speed and then teleported, the player would effectively start running between objects. Fixing it was a simple matter of changing a "<" to a "<=".

Between a theme I wasn't feeling, procrastination, and an overall lack of energy, I was worried that Cosmic Collapse would end up another "playable but not really finished" project of mine, but I'd call the end product one of my better and more polished Ludum Dare entries to date. My own high score is around 800, but I invite you to smash it into the dirt. ;)

post your highscore!

i'm happy to have finished the score system in the nick of time, so that people (like YOU) can post their highscore! I'd say my first game jam is a success!! here's my score: LavEscapeScore.png if the image doesn't load, my score is 442m ;)

Post-Mortem: Johnny's Flipbook Space Adventure

Another Ludum Dare, another Post-Mortem.  This one is about the recent Ludum Dare 42 events and the development of my game Johnny's Flipbook Space Adventure.

The Days Up To Theme Announcement

I was looking forward to LD42 for months, until about a week before the start. For some reason, I was not hit with the normal excitement, and decided that it may be time to take a break... after all, I did 5 LDs in a row and I am currently working on my pet project. I decided to press on and go through voting for themes.

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of most of the themes to make the finals and when the theme was announced, I decided that its probably a good idea to take a break. Even though I was "out", I was still thinking of a game, and about 6 hours later my game just came to me and I was in! At this time it was well after midnight so I decided to go get some rest and start early the next morning. By the time I got started, I was over 12 hours behind, but I was determined to ramp up and get to work.

Day 1

Day 1 for me was actually Day 2 of Ludum Dare. I decided for the theme I was going to use hand drawn images and animate them in a flip book style.  I used Adobe Photoshop Sketch (which I never used before) on my iPad to draw 5 images for each sprite, and animate them in a loop. It came out very nice.

I scanned some graph paper as a background image. I also scanned a piece of paper that I tore a hole into. Originally, this was going to be used when the player's ship shoots an alien ship... I wanted the hole to appear at the spot where the alien ship was destroyed, but this was becoming quite a challenge. There was a lot of overlap with other holes and existing alien ships, and that was causing a lot of physics issues that I just could not work around. It also made the game a bit frustrating to play.

I decided instead to "tear" a hole in the paper between levels. That seem to work and made game play fun and challenging.

By the end of the day, I had a pretty solid space shooter with some audio in place. Since I was pretty far into development at this point, I decided to call it for the day, and pick it up again the next day.

Day 2

It's not Sunday 8:00am EST. There is 10 hours of Ludum Dare left, but I was in a good position. I completed the audio, using Audacity and Adobe Audition (another tool I never used before) to make my voice more child-like, created the title screen, and back story, and after a bit of play-testing, it was time to submit.

What Went Well

  • Normally, it is a bit of a task to come up with something I want to develop and is fun to play. This time, the game idea just came to me so easily. This was a game I really wanted to make! That was an incredible motivator.
  • During development, I actually learned how to use 2 applications I never used before (Adobe Audition and Adobe Photoshop Sketch). I'm not a pro with them, but they are 2 more tools in the tool belt.
  • I made all the audio with my voice, and it was fun!

What Could Have Gone Better

  • I'm not really sure... this is a tough one. My original ideal of ripping holes when alien ships were destroyed was costing me a lot of time. Same with my lack of enthusiasm during the start. I did turn these into positives and I think it helped me create a game I really enjoyed programming and playing.

Are you having a happy day? Let's change that!

On a serious note, we'd love for you to check out our game.

After Ludum Dare 41, our group had tossed around the idea of trying a serious topic for our next this game. When the theme for LD42 was announced, we brainstormed for hours, finally deciding on "running out of space in your mind," which we felt was a good, yet simplified description of dementia.

We decided on a graphic novel, trying to focus on an overall experience that would accurately portray the effects of Alzheimer's on a family. We researched the horrible diseases that cause dementia and drew from our own group's experiences. Throughout our development cycle, we worked with the cousin of one of team members, who had worked as a nurse and spent a lot of time with dementia patients.

We felt this game would be very high risk/high reward, with a pretty heavy burden to "get it right." We believe we were able to meet the challenge, and present our game in a way that is accurate, moving, and an overall unique experience.

@carystringfield did an absolutely amazing job on the art, @mister-kweh somehow managed to write five unique and immersive songs that fit perfectly with the mood, @sbx5 created the animations and effects that really brought the scenes to life, and @kovakomes programmed the entire game, tying our pieces together and presenting the story in an incredible framework.

I wrote the story, and I really am blessed to have such an amazing group to work with.

I really hope you can feel the passion and emotion we were trying to accomplish with our game.

Some reviews we've received so far (thank you to everyone who has played our game):

"Oh cool now I’m sad."

"Wow. Absolutely shed a tear for me. Couldn’t help it."

"...this was so emotional and raw"

"This game totally slayed me!"

"I cried SOOOOOOO MUCHHHHHH"

"That was heartbreaking to go through. That’s all I can say, really"

"Well, that hit hard. Can’t say I wasn’t warned though."

"Brilliant, bringing this kind of experience and story to an event like Ludum Dare is is truely amazing. Thank you so much."

"… this game has practically left me speechless."

"...while there’re always lots of gems in the game jams, games that people just have to see are still pretty rare. Yours is like that though."

"WOW. Just… wow. Thanks for sharing that."

Thank you everyone for your support, and if you haven't checked out our game yet, we hope you do.

Ludum Dare to released game in three weeks?

Ok, now I've done something stupid =)

Ludum Dare 42 was my 7th consecutive LD and for the first time I couldn't spend much time making a game. I was returning from a vacation with my wife and kids and since I knew the theme I could use the kids drawing kits and sketch out an idea of a game to fit the theme. I then had about 8 hours of actual "computer time" to make everything. I was quite happy with the result considering the little time I had for this event and I actually found the game fun to play myself which is a bonus =)

Well then. Now to the stupid thing. I have been making assets and games for many years but I have never released a mobile game. I decided to make my Ludum Dare 42 game "Parking Spaces" my first official Mobile game release so over the last 7 nights, after my dayjob and after the kids have gone to sleep, I am doing a post-jam version of this game that should be release-worthy by 1st September. I am going for polished game-play, improved artwork, 8 track music soundtrack. I have no idea if I'll make it but I'll give it my best shot. I've just finished all the artwork I need (16 vehicles), road tiles, title artwork, mobile button icons etc. I've also got 2 of the 8 tracks composed and I'm going for a 1950s inspired modern chip style to fit the low poly artwork.

Here's what I've got so far (the song is actually 4+ minutes, but this is just a short extract from the new menu scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0HlmQmCKcQ

I will continue to compose the remaining music in parallel of developing the game. The mechanic is up and running already and I'm making it more robust to support unlockable parking lots with different challenges.

Here's what my LD game looked like 6 days ago:

...and here was my original sketch on the boat:

Wonder how this will pan out =)

Out of Inventory Space! Dev Log 2

I want to say thank you to those that tried out my game and gave me some valuable feedback. I know it's too much to expect a complex board game in 48 hours but I think I did very well for usually sticking to 2D action games. The positive and negative feedback have both been very useful for helping me plan the future work of this project.

I do have plans to make this a fully finished game and I have been coding regularly since the end of the compo. A few key critiques were that there wasn't a lot of interaction for the player and that the game would be better if it had an NPC AI to fill in for lack of actual players.

I redesigned the UI to make it more appealing based on some advice from those that played. Out of Inventory Space Redesign.png

I also have redesigned the combat system and plan to make it less linear with branching paths. Instead of a flat attack value you get assigned a number of dice of varying size. I'm taking my love for fantasy tabletop and kind of merging it with a Mario Party styled board game.

Please feel free to let me know if this sounds like something you would play with friends locally, over the internet, on mobile, or even on tabletop if it was made physical. I also would love to hear any ideas for features to include.

Check out our 17th Ludum Dare game, Kingdoms Fall. It's a turn-based strategy game where the game board crumbles underfoot.

ld42-kingdoms-fall-tiny.gif

Recruit your army with 4 different unit types, spread across the land to claim territory, battle your rival kingdom, and claim their castle ::european_castle:: before you run of space.

The attack and defense stats of a unit are bolstered by the units around them, so place your units strategically to overwhelm the enemy forces!

Thank you for all your feedback :hearts: I am now working this weekend on an HTML5 version of the game! Hopefully there tomorrow 😊 The desktop version will still be the best experience! ✌️

And congratulations everyone! :fireworks:

How dirty is too dirty?

To my fellow programmers out there, how dirty do you let your code get over the course of a jam? Obviously there's enormous time pressure. But my sense is that at least on the first day, if you don't put a little thought into the organization of your code, you're going to wind up with a terrible bug the second day that's going to eat up way too much of your productivity. For that reason when I'm writing my code, in the moment, I try to make it as clean and understandable as possible. If I come across something that should be majorly refactored, I usually don't, but when it comes to the little things that pop up while I'm writing the code, I try to do a good job making my intentions clear so if I have to go back the next day, I don't get lost and mess everything up.

What has your experience with code cleanliness during game jams been? Has really dirty code come back to haunt you?

Speaking of dirty code, consider checking out my game about dirty old men. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/camp-snuggle
