Cluster

Cluster is a very old hard drive (its maximum storage capacity is 10 GB), but very insightful. Tired of the constant abuses of its owner, by the large number of files downloaded, a rebellion begins in which you can help him to comply with it. Delete each and every one of the downloaded files, before these become hidden in the folders.

Wanted to take a second to show everyone our game! This is my second Ludum, and for this theme we made a game out of a system cleaner software that has to clean a machine that is filling up with stuff and you have to clean it before the memory gets filled up.

It is a top down shooter with enemy spawners you have to destroy. It plays a lot like older versions of Gauntlet. All of it with a Windows 95-98 style. :] I also made an executable version to go with the web player if anyone would like to play it on their Desktop instead! You can check it out Here

It has been some time since the completion of work on the game. We decided to share our impressions. It was very cool and fun. Although we had problems sleeping during the intensive work.

We learned a lot about our abilities. Someone even managed to learn new skills in the development process. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

VR Games?

Anyone making VR games for Ludum Dare? Is there an easy way to tag and search games by genre, platform, etc?

I found one by chance, a VR game written in Unity, and was happily able to get it up and running on my Oculus Rift. I would love to test out some more and provide feedback, leave me a comment link with your game and I'll try it out. Thanks!

Post-Mortem: The Crunch

This is the post-mortem of our game: The Crunch.

Start Screen.gif

This summer, my friend Rik (who likes to go by @proAFKboy (or rather 1Kawaiitomato but the username was too long) but screw him his name is on the game page anyway) and I decided to participate in Ludum Dare for the first time, we had seen the post mortems of some game developers (mostly pixelprophecy @philstrahl check him out he's cool)

But this time, it was different, this time, i would be the one who made the post mortem. Not because he didn't finish his game but just because we participated for the first time :p

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY

Day 1: Rik and i met up at his house on friday the 10th of august, 4 hours before the jam started, we set up our laptops and watched random youtube video's because what else were we supposed to do? prepare? puh, no thank you, only proffesionals prepare. This Ludum Dare started (as you know) at midnight instead of 3am, so we could brainstorm without being totally braindead the next day.

When the time finally came, we checked twitter like madmen, and the theme turned out to be: "Running Out of Space" (as you know). As i expected, the theme was one of the final ones that i didn't really want, so at first we had no ideas. Then at 1am Rik had the brilliant idea to go take a walk in the rain, you might think this is sarcasm but i think that the adrenaline that was released into our systems actually helped...

And then it happend.

God, from up on his heavenly throne saw us there, desperate for ideas, and he took the best idea he could find and said by God who is also myself, i will give these young men the greatest idea the earth has ever seen! And God blessed the rains down in Nijlen and in a raindrop that was aimed for our heads he put the idea of a lifetime! But he missed and hit the pig next to us...

Now we'll never know what that idea was, it could've changed the history of game developement but alas.

Back to the story

we returned to rik's house with a couple of ideas, like a bad tetris clone where you'd stack boxes on top of eachother but instead of tetris (where the lines dissapear) you'd just have to stack for as long as possible, or (after having walked through a cemetery) you were playing as a doctor in a medieval town where the plague was happening, you'd have to cure people but at the same time not cure too many because otherwise the town would be overpopulated.

Those ideas went nowhere though, we finally had two ideas that stuck:

"you are a spaceship escaping the big crunch, gathering people while you go but with limited storage space"

or

"heaven is nearly full, you are St. Peter (the gatekeeper of heaven) and you have to make excuses to send people that are normally allowed into heaven into hell."

these two ideas seemed interesting but we decided to go with the first one because the second one looked too much like paper's please in our minds.

That same night, I designed the spaceship that you controll while rik was trying stuff in an engine called defold. then at 4am, we went to sleep

SpaceShip LD42 clone.gif

(This does not look like anything NSFW you dirty minded person)

Day 2: On the second day, Rik worked on the base code while I started making some planets, after a while, rik had the spaceship flying around and orbiting around planets, but the orbit animation looked "wonky" so then Rik said:

"Hey, why don't I just go and write an engine myself in wich I have more controll"

and then I said:

"Rik... Dude, we're in the middle of a game jam"

But appareantly he knows more about code than me so I allowed him.

After day 2, we hadn't done much, we were basically where we stopped in defold, we had a universe with randomly generated planets (2-3 planets at the time, I am lazy, that lazyness cost us the chance of doing more planets I'm sorry Rik) and a shrinking universe, but we hadn't implemented any of the fuel/lifeform mechanics yet, you could see lifeforms by the exclamation point but had no way of picking them up, the core was also not implemented at the time.

I had also updated the ship's sprite because it worked better with collisions this way (and, you know... other reasons.)

SpaceShip LD42 clone (1).gif

Day 3: Day 3 (sunday), was unbelievably productive.

Rik implemented all of the lifeform mechanics: picking them up and generating oil on green planet ; all of the actual space mechanics, we had particle effects and an actual menu, win and death screen, I added more planets to the mix, the core now had a sprite and we had a semi-tutorial. It started to look like an actual game!

dead.png

(epic death screen i know)

Day 4: Ah, submission day. To be honest, this day was pretty chill, all we did was tweak some variables, add some more planets, make the actual menu screen and wait for submission hour.

startBG.png

At 7pm, I had to go back home and i left Rik to do some final tweaks and then at midnight upload it.

But nooooooooooooooo, Rik can't have it be that easy, appareantly he deleted the main game file and had to use tools that I don't even understand myself to get it back, after some internal screaming he was able to find it and submit even before submission hour became submission day.

Well anyway, it all worked out in the end, and here's our result: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/the-crunch

I hope i didn't waste your time with this post and i hope you enjoy playing ;)

Bring your friends for some local multiplayer madness!

This jam was amazing, I joined forces with @atillagallio and our sound designer Neder (which did not make an LD account yet -.-), and even though both of our artist friends dropped out in the last moment we could finish an awesome looking game!

You should definitely try it out if you have some friends to play it with, it is awesome to play a 6 player match of Alien! We had so much fun with our own game during the weekend that we didnt have a whole lot of time to finish all of our different ideas (or implement bots for single player mode, sorry people).

We also learned about a cool thing called Parsec (https://parsecgaming.com/) which you can use to play local multiplayer games online!

Cleared my backlog from lunchbreak, looking for more!

I got through the list people left me earlier today, and now I'm once again on the hunt for those hidden gems that I might otherwise not have had a chance to play. Ideally I'd prefer to play games in my browser so I'll prioritise the ones I don't need to download.

Post-mortem: "Oh, sh*t!"

About

First of all, hi there and thanks for reading.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Berny a.k.a xPheRe and I've been working as a web developer for the last 10 years.

Now I'm looking to find a place where I've always belonged: videogames.

And that's where I am now, writing about my unfinished project Oh sh*t! featured at Ludum Dare 42.

I think it would be interesting to share my thoughts during the development of the project.

To me, at least.

(My apologies in advance for my English, it's not my first language)

Intro

Rewind to previous friday and picture the following: This is me, getting home late, after some beers. Now I'm turning my computer on and looking at my twitter timeline. Then a scream comes out loud from my throat... "OMG, LD#42 started already? OH, SH*T!"

Act I: Brainstorm

I was only one hour late, but here in Spain it was night time already. I decided to brainstorm some ideas before going to bed and let the pillow decide.

I wrote some ideas in little paper strips: - Space: Universe. Spatial concept. Keyboard key. - Running out: Reduce space with time. Fill space with elements. Run, literally, like Forest Gump. - Gameplay: Puzzle. Switches. Transformation. - Type: 2D platform. Top-down sokoban style. First person. - Environment: Computer memory. Schedule. Room. Wardrobe.

The next morning, after some good sleep, I carved some rules: - It should be simple. - I liked the computer theme. - A tetris-alike would be nice. - The game's name will be "OH, SH*T!". Everybody knows you need to start with the name.

Also I'd follow COMPO's rules in case I had something finished in 48 hours. Dude, I was so wrong about that...

Act II: I walk alone

Can you believe it? I've been promoted to memory manager! Awesome! A whole memory cell to manage and fill with bits from the bus storage... Wow. I hope to live up to the expectations...

That's the beginning of the story, now I want to convert this into a game. Where do I start? - Created some simple pixel assets in Gimp. - Drew the worker, the bits, the pieces, the factory floor... - Added some animations to the main character: idle, walking, talking, picking an object... - Made some plans with those assets, drawing mentally what I wanted the game to look like.

The worker must go to a conveyor belt, the input queue, to pick a package, then go to the main grid and place it. Bits placed in the grid can't be walked over, so each piece makes the next harder to put. In order to empty some cells there'll be an output queue with piece requests which you can fulfill. Also some packages are transformations that you can apply to a cell, like "clear all connected cells to this one that share color".

I opened Godot and start placing the assets here and there. Everything looked gorgeous and I had a walking player in a gray factory in less than 30 minutes. Then I started to code grid's logic and everything crumbled.

Cut-scene: The path to decay

It was almost a day in the jam and it came clear to my mind: Everything I've got until then were the secondary actors. The main character isn't the worker or the factory... it's the grid.

And since I had a hard time putting the grid to work with the rest, I decided to remove everything else. I even decided to pause development until the next day and let the pillow decide again. My pillow's a good adviser.

Break

But the pillow didn't help that much.

Sunday came full of social events and I wasn't able to touch a single line of code until late. But I had the time to think about the direction of the project. And that was the problem: It had no direction at all.

I've been working like a headless chicken, without planning. And also ignoring the first rule: It should be simple.

My next step should be to open a Trello and start organizing myself. I won't give up on the project, I'd be working until the last minute to ship it as JAM at least.

Back at home again, turned the computer just to look with dismay how my internet connection wasn't working at all.

Act III: Focus shift

The next morning my ISP fixed the connection problem, time I took to start a greenfield project just with the grid. I focused on the main concerns, placing pieces, avoiding collision, rotating... Making the grid work on its own then stacking the other pieces on top.

When I got it working with the mouse I decided to left it as this. No need for the player to move the worker here and there. Simpler.

The rest of the assets started to build upon the working grid. But most of those wasn't used, worker animations, grid connections, conveyor belts... Time spent for nothing.

As it became clear that I wasn't going to publish a full game, I began to polish some things. - Added some sound effects generated with the awesome "sfxr". - Brought back the main character and the game's title. - Created a simple site at itch.io to expose the little thing.

Everything was in place, but not as I would like to be. But I finally managed to make something for a Ludum Dare.

And that, that was the BIG prize.

The Good

  • Engine choice: Godot feels like a glove to my ideals. It's lightweight, open source, with a great community and behind the closest development team.
  • Breaks: Taking breaks to sleep and eat well is key. When stuck, go for a walk, do something else. The inspiration will come.
  • LDJam community: Received good advices in the comments, also support and encouragement. This is awesome for a newcomer with an unfinished project on the table.

The Bad

  • The house from the rooftop: When working solo it's vital to have your priorities sorted. Know what's the key point of your game, develop this. Then add the rest. I did it the other way around.
  • Organization: Managing time is essential in a 72h race, use any management tool at your fingertips, but choose one and stick to it. From the beginning.
  • Forcing the theme: It's hard to find novel ideas matching the theme. Just get some old ideas and mix them. I tried too hard to build an original idea and this munched too much time.
  • Too many ideas: Once you get a good idea, stop overthinking. Mentally adding too much content creates a burden on expectations. I wanted to do so many things in 72h...
  • Grow by little: Take baby steps towards your next goal, those should be reachable from the previous one, but enough to make you feel advancing. Bite the big picture in easy installments.

The Ugly

  • Music: Had I know about Abundant Music there'll be some great midi tune in the background. Great tool.
  • Mouse is for PC: try to find a way you can play your game in most platforms. Mouse location is not that portable (think console controllers or cellphones)
  • Noise and interruptions: Using a pomodoro technique would've ease the focus on development and breaks, even with no one's around to tell.
  • Compare and despair: I checked #LD42 hashtag at twitter too many times, watching in awe other people's games. But that's fine, this is YOUR game. Be proud of it.

Ending

At first this project seemed to me like a big failure. Then I understand it can be used as an experience towards better contributions.

Comments on this unfinished game made me think again if I should work further to finish the game or not.

It would take some time, but it will be worth it. I'll made a full game of this "Oh, sh*t!" experience.

Thanks for reading and enjoy Ludum Dare!

ECO WARRIORS UPDATE

Al Gore has an update from his dolphin allies!

AlGoreTalk_Smaller.gif

We made some post-jam tweaks to ECO WARRIORS! We've now got:

  • Improved AI (actually it's a bit stupider, but that's more fun, and a bit more realistic given the nature of the enemies)
  • Gamepad controls that can now do everything mouse and keyboard can.
  • Skippable tree cutscene (after the first viewing). Still no checkpoint.
  • Enemies that look angry while attacking, and bewildered while dead.
  • One extra bonus level at the end (it's there to give the improved/stupider AI a chance to play out, and also just to have more exploding things in the game)

After the jam we got some good feedback about the tactical depth of the combat (or rather the lack thereof). So in this update we've tried to address that (at least a little bit).

As a result, the AI for the shooting enemies is now a bit more complicated. Surprisingly, this was done in order to make them more stupid and more predictable. Instead of rushing you, we wanted the shooting enemies to stay still and fire at where they last witnessed the player, and so leave them wide open for the player to approach from another angle and outsmart them.

We also added one more level at the end that gives the player a lot of opportunities to test out the new AI. From a tactical perspective, we think it's strictly better than anything that made it into the submission.

You can find the updated build here: http://www.freelives.net/GameJams/Builds/EcoWarriorsPostLudumDare.zip

Reality vs Feel

EventfulHorizon_realityVfeel.png

Something interesting happened in the middle of LudumDare42 this last weekend. I had just finished my work on a black hole shader (in the above image on the left) that was going to be used in our game. (pretty much copied and pasted from this helpful youtube video)

But although the effect was actually really cool, it just didn't fit the way I had hoped it would.

In our game, a black hole chases you around the level. If it gets too close to you, you get sucked in and die. I know that in real life, black holes warp the light around them so you end up seeing what is behind them on the edges and then absolute blackness in the center. The black hole shader that I had implemented did exactly that, Woo hoo! The problem was it lacked the sort of feeling I was going for. The "real" black hole sort of pushed and smooshed the world around it. I needed something that would actually give the player the feeling of being sucked up into it. So I had to make a choice, use what we had already implemented that was "working" and was actually more realistic OR go back to the drawing board to find something that matched the feeling I wanted.

In a game jam, that decision is a tough one to make. You only have so many hours to finish and submit your game, so any detour can really slow your progress and lead to cutting other features. On the flip side, though, you typically only get one chance for people to play your game. If it isn't right the first time, you just don't get a second chance.

I decided to attempt to redo the effect because it was just too important to the feeling of our game. With some pair programming help from Logan ( @bitdecay ), we were able to come up with a simpler, less realistic, but overall better feeling shader (in the above image on the right). As you can see in the picture, on one side, the world is sort of smooshed and warped around the black hole, and on the other you can see the world is sort of being pulled and stretched towards the blackness. In the end, that pulling effect created a much more visceral experience when you get caught by the black hole. You can actually feel the anxiety when you see the world at the edges of the screen behind you start to stretch because you know the black hole is now right on your heels.

Sometimes in games the importance of realism just doesn't trump the importance of the feel of the game. When someone plays my game, I don't want them to think "Hmm, that shader effect sure was accurate." I want them to say "Wow, I can't believe how close it was to getting me!". Experiencing something that makes you feel will almost always create a more lasting impression than something that makes you think.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you will check out our game: Eventful Horizon

Rules question

Lots of people are struggling with the controls on the game we submitted. Is it ok to change the controls, or is that breaking the rules? Because I totally agree with all the comments about the controls.

We submitted in the Jam, not the Compo.

Looking for android games

Hi! I'm currently away from my PC and I can only try mobile games, so if you have an android built of your entry, drop me a link!

Woah. That was incredible.

This LDJAM was the first time I challenged myself to the 48h Compo.

I was with 0 ideas in the first 10 hours, but then I had a blink: A top-down melee game where enemies shoots projectiles that increase their size, swallowing all the space.

So I created something like a lore and some art for my first compo game!

I had lots of problems figuring what kind of style to choose, and I ended with a cartoony and fat style, but "stained" by different shapes and colors.

I was wondering about a tiny but strong character that travels the dimension searching for enemy that are preparing to attack peaceful other dimensions, and so this game :)

The pest concept was born to explain the "inflating" attack, since they looks like pest bubbles with that greeny and unhealthy color.

And this is the creation, Void Knight vs PEST!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/void-knight-vs-pest

llooogo.png

I didn't have time to polish hitboxes or animation, neither to compose multiple tracks..

* I started to feel a little dizzy the second day... *

so I had some extra hours of sleep in the evening to regenerate my mind (I planned to sleep only 6 hours at night)

So, if you like to give a shot to my game and help me become better, please do! Also, leave in comments a link to your game, I'll be very happy to leave a fair feedback and rating.

Sirkulphage gameplay + Hi-Score Challenge!!!

Hi folks! I have a wee video of Sirkulphage, showing how you can maintain a run for a few minutes and work up a decent score. I got 652290 - which is ok. I'd love to see someone beat it and share it on a video, stream, or even just a pic of your hi score!

Here are some tips:

  1. Eat the sirkuls in order of size to build up a multiplier.
  2. Listen out for the sound of infected sirkuls, and keep away from them.
  3. If you do get infected use an exploding sirkul to kill it.
  4. Use exploding sirkuls as a last resort to clear space, but get ready to dodge the fallout!
  5. There is always a smaller sirkul somewhere, even if it's just off screen - it will appear eventually.

https://youtu.be/K1PokuFCkJE

652k to beat. Lemme see those scores!

A great review by Bloc97!
I love the type of game that puts you in a room where you have to complete tasks. This game was very challenging...I can see this game being expanded by adding different tasks. And maybe have something like papers please where you have a story and each day becomes more and more difficult.

I made the game using pictures from my most recent trip to Japan. If any of you are planing to be in Tokyo or Kyoto any time soon I have a google map I can share with you and I am always 100% down to help people plan rad trips to japan. If any of you want to start learning Japanese and don't know where to start let me know and I'll shower you with advice. If you are not a beginner and looking for intermediate advice, me to! If your an expert tell me how I can go from being able to read 500 kanji to being able to read a newspaper, and from being able to speak like a 2 year old to being able to speak like a 3 year old. I would really appreciate the advice :)

Protocol: 47 - Superstar Appeal | Post Mortem

What did you make?

LD42 - Promo.png

A write your own disaster appeal/charity single highlighting the planet's overpopulation as one of the world's superstar producers game. It's a laid back, humorous, choose your own song/adventure game type of thing, I guess.

Why?

We said that if we were going to take part the theme would have to be dynamite since we had no enthusiasm for a punishing weekend. We never have but we're always compelled to take part, this is our 12th Ludum Dare! We had mentioned in the week that we could try making a music based game and we could just write a song about whatever the theme is, somehow turn that into a "game".

When the theme was announced we didn't think it was dynamite. We came up with the usual handful of bad ideas before coming back to the music idea. Running out of space could be good material for a song about overpopulation. The player could build the lyrics through dialogue choices and then watch the song at the end. It would be stupid but could be fun.

How?

Day 1

On the first day we spent most of our time working on the music. We decided to provide the leading lines and then we'd offer a choice of 3 counter rhymes for the player to pick between. There would be 8 leading lines with 3 rhymes each so we need to write 3 variations of the same song with 24 unique counter rhymes. We could then divide the song into chunks so when you select the lyrics you want it builds a playlist of chunks that will playback later. It seemed easy enough on paper, we'd just need the words and music. Since we'd keep the same tempo we could have multiple backing tracks for the song. Time permitting we'd have 3 tracks. Time wasn't permitting but we did manage 2!

Day 2

ss2.png

The next day was spent "rapping" and coding the chunk system. Trying to make sure the rapping started and finished within the parameters of the chunk was quite challenging. I'm terrible at rapping but it was pretty fun and turned out terrible enough to hopefully be funny. We then chopped everything into chunks and set up Unity to playback the chunks in the order we call them. It worked! Problem was there's a tiny gap in the audio each time a new chunk plays. Luckily, Rodo quickly figured out a way to make sure there was gapless payback and it all seemed to work! Yay!

So, the music side was all hunky-dory, we just had to make it all work as game. Oh, we haven't done any art assets yet! This is a backwards jam. We usually save the music until 2 hours before upload time, this time we've spent the first 2 days on the music alone.

Day 3

ss3.png

The last day was pretty full on. We didn't benefit from the event starting 3 hours early, we simply lost a critical 3 hours of crunch time we rely on each jam. On the plus side Rodo had the day off, a luxury we rarely enjoy. We had to do all the art, the dialogue trees, make sure all the corresponding choices match the music played, create the intro, animate, make the start and end screen including the last minute review system.

We used the same chunk principle to generate a review based on your lyric choices. We were very tired at this point though so the review fragments aren't the best written text you'll read this Ludum Dare, but we tried! Then we ran out of time...

What was missing?

  • The 3rd musical option
  • The option to restart from the notepad scene
  • Meaningful gameplay
  • A balanced diet
  • Rest

We have a bad habit of not really making "games" for Ludum Dare, instead we work dozens of hours in the hope of making you laugh for a couple of minutes. I'm not quite sure it's worth ruining my weekend for that but here we are, our 12th game!

See ya all next time. Thanks to everyone who has played and left a comment. We appreciate all the feedback.

Losing Progress Sucks

EventfulHorizon_checkpoints.png

One of the members of our team (@shadoninja) said of our level design,

"Make the level so we can beat it trivially, and that will be the right difficulty level for everyone else."

That is not to say that everyone else is not as good as we are at playing games, it is just to point out that after hours and hours play testing our game over and over, we will inevitablly be better at it then the average person who picks up our game for the first time. We know where the next platform will be, we know how long it will take for the black hole to reach us, and we have mastered the physics of the movement mechanic. Making a level for someone who doesn't have that experience is hard to do. And really, we did make an effort at every step of design to make our game as accessible as possible to everyone who played it. But to be honest, even with that in the front of our minds, I think we still made our game too hard.

It isn't so much that we wanted to make the game easy for everyone, just to make it accessible. When someone tries out our game for the first time, I'd like to see them complete it. We put a ton of effort into the beginning and end of our game, and I don't have full confidence that everyone will get to enjoy that last part.

I believe the main reason for this is that after someone dies for the first time and is brought back to the menu screen to start the game over from the very beginning, they become immediately deflated. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get a checkpoint system into the game before the deadline. Which means, every time someone died, they had to start from scratch.

Every. Single. Time.

I imagine that after starting from the beginning more than a time or two, the player will just give up and chalk it up to "That game was too hard" and then move on to the next game without ever having reached the final ending.

After the deadline, I decided to put some effort into creating a checkpoint system (pictured above). I made it so that if you reached a specific area (green circles), that on death, you would spawn back to that point and the black hole would spawn somewhere (pink line) along the path (teal line) behind you. Watching someone play this version of the game was much more satisfying. There was no longer the deflating sensation of losing ALL of your progress. It turned stress and frustration into fun.

All of this to say, taking away progression from a player should be a technique used extremely sparingly in a game. We missed the opportunity to make our game truly accessible this time around. But hopefully we will take what we've learned and apply it for the next jam.

Thank you for reading, and please play our game: Eventful Horizon

Post LudumDare Android Version

TitleScreen.jpg

I was investigating in the android exports for unity and I made a version of my ludum dare game "Dont Hit The Ducks!" For android. I fixed a couple of things that the mayority of people didnt like, like the recoil and I added nice vissuals effects.

Now you can enjoy this game in your portable devices, I think it fits really nice in the casual portable gaming.

You can also try the normal version for Windows. It has the recoil and not so polissed vissuals but I liked as much.

(It only has a link that says windows because the page doesn´t let me change the name of it, but it linkes to a itch.io page with both versions).
