Cluster Mess?

Hello everyone.

I'm here to ask you an opinion. What do you think about these changes for my game? All these specters may be hard to recognize when clustered together (left), so I tried swapping colors so they can be a little bit easier to see.

Changes.png

Seriously, what do you think? Any artists or designers lurking around?

Oh, and I'll seize this moment to shill my game. Give me some feedback, pretty please?

How do you rate compo VS jam games?

Hello there!

First of all, congratulations to all of you for releasing (or even trying to release) a game during this 42nd Ludum Dare.

On my side, it was the first time I went for the 48h solo compo category. Now that I've seen both sides of the coin, I'm wondering... When you are about to vote for a game, what will it change for you to consider its category?

I expect no "good" answer, but I'm super curious :)

Let's end with the traditional "if you want to take a look at my game, here's the link" : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/running-out-in-space GVkceY.png

High Castle Post-Jam

MeyhamPostJam.gif

I got some awesome feedback for my LD42 entry High Castle! With that feedback and some new ideas I cooked up a post-jam version! It boasts several improvements, including a choice between easy mode and hard mode, unification of some game mechanics, and a much improved tutorial system.

Grab High Castle post-jam version here!

About Graphic Design! Dev Log 1

Hi! I wanted to talk a little bit about the Graphic Design of our game, Take care of her, that you can play by clicking here if you haven’t already!

I’ll stay spoiler-free so you can still read this, it may change the way you’ll see the graphics in a good way.

The main goal was to use graphics to reinforce the story, and help visualization while being fun to watch. My main inspiration is the Bauhaus movement, created at the end of the 1910’s. Bauhaus inspired modern graphic design in so many ways you don’t even realise it.

Even Ludum Dare logo font is inspired by Bauhaus!

bauhaus.jpg

This poster is an example among others of what inspired me when making the illustrations of the game.

It is about sharp lines, flat-design, strong and bold letters, and fluidity. I tried to replicate that effect as good as I could.

  • Each illustration is based on a keyword, with a big font-size, from which many lines come out and stretch beyond the screen. Choosing the number of lines is important: many lines can evocate overwhelmness, or a precise number, while a reduced number of lines can evocate loneliness, void, or singularity.

  • Colors help transmitting emotion, and can define precise things. I used it to set a rhythm in the design, but also to define precise characters, and set an atmosphere.

Let’s try with our Ludum Dare logo and the Submission Day post:

Capture d’écran (373).png

Here, the keyword is inclined, suggesting disorder. The three small texts being all over the place reinforce the impression. The blue background gives enough structure to make this text an important one, while the color itself creates a good color-blocking with the orange. The yellow shapes create a beautiful gradient with the two shades of orange and the circular aspect make them look like a clock, while the blue and yellow combination evocates the sky and the sun, which are present during the day.

Do you get it? Disorder, day, clock: it's Submission Day!

This is how I designed the whole game and if you're interested in this I'd be very happy if you play our game : Take care of her.

50 reviews. Thank you.

Im 18 year old student, currently with mononucleosis and I never thought I could make a game, that people would enjoy and play so thank you.

Im currently working on a video from making trophy hunter https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/treasure-hunter I filmed all 35.5 hours of development and now Im rendering it so the video will be on youtube porbably in the next days.

If you are still hesitating to play my game, as Michael Jordan said "stop it, get some help" and play it :D Screenshot_204.png

Any official forum for LD?

Hey guys, I’m new to this community. I’ve been amazed by many entries. Is there a place for us to discuss or share stuffs rather than a simple post which may get buried out easily?

I am also looking forward to find some possible co-workers. Is there any one-to-one communication (py transaction) method or platform?

SINGULARITY 1.2.1

I just pushed a very small update to SINGULARITY. It adds no more gameplay features and fixes no bugs (so I hope this is okay for Compo ^^) but adds much simpler menu navigation. I forgot to mirror some navigation controls to the arrow keys which is fixed now.

My favorite part of Ludum Dare 42...

LD42 forced me to draw again, and was the most enjoyable time I've had with a pen and paper in a long time.

sequence_3.gif

The game, engine and all, was written in a text editor, and making a little engine in Javascript was fun, too. But drawing! That was the most satisfying. I just did backgrounds, and you don't even get to see them very well in the final product, but it gave me confidence to do more in the future.

Games I've Enjoyed

Ok, here's another round of games I've played this Ludum Dare and really enjoyed. I don't have any real criteria other than when I look over my rated games list I think "other people should play this!"

Ultimate Question - 42

JAM GAME by Andrey Ugolnik (@andrey-ugolnik) , Hodas (@hodas) , Dorzhgotov (@dorzhgotov) , and Usanio (@usanio)

42.jpg

This is another simple game with a huge amount of polish. You only need one button. You click, press whatever to launch your spaceship outwards to new planets while the black hole in the middle sucks everything inwards. This is what I aspire to make in game jam games. Short, complete and polished.

Ice Interstice

COMPO GAME by aeveis (@aeveis)

ice.png

Another simple game that works really well. Cover all the blocks with ice by walking over them, or by breathing on existing ice blocks to cover ones that are out of reach. The puzzles are fun and the difficulty progression is great. You will walk through the first couple levels learning the mechanics but have to think in some of the later ones. Music and SFX are simple but charming. Plus, it was made with my game engine of choice, HaxeFlixel.

Raft vs Shark

JAM GAME by Batlordz (@batlordz)

raftvsshark.jpg

You are a pirate on a raft being slowly destroyed by sharks and crazy wave waterspout things. Run around and click on the raft to repair it. At first it seems easy, but as you get farther from the shore things get really frantic. It always ended for me when I would move just one extra space and end up in the water, probably to be eaten by sharks... Graphics and sound work, as well as mood.

Last Piece

JAM GAME by WetBox (@wetbox)

last piece.png

This game looks beautiful. Gameplay is simple. What will happen is the first time you play you won't really understand it and you will lose. Then the second or third time you will make it trivial to survive and instead spend your time building a mega island. Like a god-mode Minecraft.

Any other games you really think need to be played?

Does your LD game need SFX, Music or both? I am your man!

Roguelike much?

For this jam I tried to make a turn-based game feel hectic and fast.

Before you lies the slaughtered corpse of Baron Rasec a necro aristocrat that has dominated your homeland for over 200 years. You vowed to destroy him. Your quest is complete. But the stench of the Baron lingers in the air still... Might be best to go home now before it enters your lungs!

MOODFOOD - The Art

Hey all! I'm Layla. I did the Art, some programming and Writing on MOODFOOD. This is my third Ludum Dare!

Xv+dI9.gif

MOODFOOD banner with the Governess in the middle.

The main programmer on MOODFOOD did a post which you can see HERE!

I'd like to share the artistic goal of MOODFOOD, and also show some concepts that were done for it before pixel designs!

I was tasked primarily with the art direction of MOODFOOD and also the writing which in return gave me a lot of control over the universe that I wanted to portray in this project. MOODFOOD is a retro-inspired game set in a cyberpunk based universe.

39408949em270360856896059/em7858055410094178304_n.png

The Governess Concept Art

My workflow varied on this project, main characters like The Governess and even the player received concept art whereas most of the enemies didn't. The enemies were mostly just drawn into pixel art with no sketches, and luckily their designs seemed to work out! My main goal was getting good looking enemies as quickly as possible so when ready to be implemented the sprite artwork would be available.

MoodFoodEnemies.png

The Three Pets of the Governess!

For the story direction with MOODFOOD, I didn't want to make it heavily serious. I used a lot of 80's slang (which assisted well in the retro and Cyberpunk vibes). My main goal was to give the player as much story as possible in a short statement (Announcement from the governess).

TU5weV.png

The Governess!

Overall this was a really fun Ludum Dare! I'd like to thank everyone for the great feedback and also compliments on the art and writing of the game!

2D sprites!!

Whats the best way to make good sprites using a mouse. Alot of people say they use drawing tablets etc. I have an Ipad if I could use that too!

Taking Game Audio to New Heights

(Warning: Celeste spoilers are in this post)

One of the reasons I found myself playing through all of Celeste this year was because of its killer sound design. It had a cohesive soundtrack with a motif that got stuck in my head as I (un)gracefully air-dashed through the game. But the genius of this game's music/sfx goes a little deeper than listeners may notice the first time through. They utilize dynamically-filtered audio. This concept is quite new to me, so I spent a good chunk of LD42 exploring this technology to implement it in our game.

Before we go into any details, let's use an example to explain what I mean by dynamically-filtered audio. Watch the YouTube video below and listen to the music effect that happens when the player collides with the other character. This effect can be heard many times as the player chases the other character during this chapter.

Celeste Audio Effect

There is a pixelated VHS-esque visual effect to match the sound as well.

hit.gif

This is a seriously cool effect on the game and adds to why everything feels so.... epic!

So what did Celeste use to create these dynamic audio effects in their game?

FMOD Logo Black - White Background.png

FMOD! This isn't the only technology in the "audio middleware" space, but it is the one we will talk about today. Pulling off effects like this without using a tool like FMOD often results in heavy limitations on implementation (I have been there). The effect takes sound that is playing in the game and applies filters/effects to it based on the state of the game. The modification happens live as the user experiences the world. This power should not be taken lightly as it opens up game developers to a world of posibilities.

Let's look at an example of me recreating this effect. It isn't perfect, but it is close! What seems to be happening is as the player comes in contact with the enemy character in the game, a trigger is activated (we will call it "Hit") that will slide the pitch of the entire track way down and back up again over a small time interval. This clip shows me triggering the "Hit" with my mouse, but this would be done with game code eventually.

Celeste pitch shifting with FMOD

Celeste's actual implementation of this effect is a little more complicated, but this is a great place to start while learning FMOD.

So in what ways did we implement FMOD in our game? We first started with position-based audio as the player nears the space crystal. This is something that can be done without tools like FMOD, but it was a good first step and was quite easy:

2018-08-18 09em31/em59-Eventful Horizon.png

Proximity volume control with FMOD

FMOD is used again later to a greater effect as the player nears the end of their journey by applying a lowpass filter to the main section of the music (simulating an "under water" effect) while also bringing up the volume of a soft breathing layer that was previously muted from the same track:

Lowpass filter and layer volume

There were other ways we used FMOD for this game jam, but this is already a pretty long post! I hope seeing FMOD in action blew your mind like it did for me! We only scratched the surface of FMOD's capabilities.

Thanks for reading and I hope this inspired you to check out these effects live in our game: Eventful Horizon

I also have a Custom preset & updated version that're better for pixel art-ing up in a thread on Itch.IO: https://itch.io/t/279217/code-sharing-megathread

If you want to see what Senbir's VM is capable of without having to muck around in the code yourself, this is a good way to do it.

You can compile it straight to the computer's ROM once you've pasted it into the Assembler window. Turn the computer on, activate the keyboard (look at it and press F), and then use WASD to move the paint cursor around, spacebar to toggle drawing, and Q/E to cycle colors.

Hello there

If you're looking for a slow-paced, contemplative, narrative experience... well I can't offer that, but heh you can still try our nervous, fast-paced, screenshake-overloaded video game!

Post jam

I've decided to continue working on my game after the game jam. I had a lot of ideas which I could add to the game (like more weapons, new enemies, etc.). So I started working on the post jam version the day after the compo ended and in that time I was able to do some bugfixing and I added some new features. One of the features I have added is money. Your money consist of your scores added to each other, with this money you can buy permanent upgrades. the other feature I have added is a hat system which allows your character to wear hats, this system is made in such a way that hats can be added very easily. The hat I added thus far:

I hope to finish and polish these features before monday so I can upload a post jam version which includes these features.

Sprite Exporting

Hey guys! Been idling and drawing some sprites to get better at doing the vector art, and I stumbled on a good question.

In what size are you guys exporting your sprites to the game? Are you exporting them in the size you want them from the get-go, or do you export higher resolution and then scale them down in the engine of choice?

Also, would still love hearing some more feedback from you guys when it comes to my game, could use some tips about where to go with my current art skills as to the direction I should be heading!

Check out my game here!

Also, feel free to link me some games of yours to review! Much love~ :heartbeat:

A question to you:

Hey LD people. Our game Where Stars Belong is now updated.

We just fixed an overlapping text and added one line of text for indication that the player has discovered all playable content (trust me, that's very handy for you) It's more like a bug fix for the story of the game and no new content.

Do you think this version should be rated or not?

Real life playtesting

Hey guys we all love the feedback we get from other developers in this game jam. But what is really satisfying is having your friends playing your game. I encourage you to show your game to as many people as possible especially irl. I did and some of my friends really started a competition for the highscore with this crazy result: highscore.png If you've played my game you will understand why this is a crazy score :p Even my videogame-hating girlfriend and her friend had fun playing an obviously single player game together JenteEva.png

Dark Humor? A Hundred Dogs

Just need one more rating in the humor category for my game - A HUNDRED DOGS. Make sure your 100 dogs are fed, get water, and if not, that you throw their dead bodies into the dumpsters outside. How many can you keep alive until they pass from old age, as every good doggo should? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/a-hundred-dogs IMB_ebArts.GIF

Game Jam Thoughts for City Of Forgotten Toys

So this was my first Ludum Dare and I enjoyed the fact it forced me to complete something and also the fact that I already have 50 ratings, initially I was hoping to get to the 20 ratings mark to at least receive a result, but now I am hoping to get to 100. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/the-city-of-forgotten-toys, link to the game. If anyone is having any difficulty figuring out how to play or not making it to the Mayor check out, https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297450872, and 4 hour 11 minute mark. Day 1 Log in at 6 p.m. and keep refreshing the page and see the major lag. Eventually figure out the theme is running out of space and sink because I was coming up with ideas for decay and evolve, I downvoted this choice and was a little disappointed. I asked my family members for brainstorming ideas and got mainly space related games, which I did not really want to make. I finally came to the idea that when you run out of space in the house you must get rid of toys. Initially you were going to play as a toy and try to just dodge long enough and not end up in the donation box. I also struggled with deciding between 2d and 3d, I created planes and deleted them. Drew a 2d toy artwork that I really liked which initially was going to be the protagonist but turned into the teddy bears you pickup, but since I really liked the artwork I went with 2d, also I was having trouble using Blender. So, I nailed down the idea and it slowly evolved to you being the helping hand and instead of avoiding being donated the goal was to donate twos. I got the basic level design and movement. I wanted to add music and sound effects. I tried using Bosca Ceoli, but could not get sounds I liked, so decided to make my own sound effects. Day 2 Most of the basic structure is done and wake up early to continue. At this point the game feels a little boring so come to the conclusion I want a second level. I draft this out and start putting together the elements and know it will be a boss battle with the Mayor. So levels put together and idea for boss battle in place. Day 3 Put together the start menus and transition scenes, really should have made a tutorial. Complete the boss battle and get to building the game. Try to upload the game a few times but keep not having a working version, since I did not zip the entire file. Now I know going forward what needs to be in the file for the game to run.

The experience was fun the feedback has been positive and constructive. I am working on adding a new level and team the Yarn Brigade. See the attachment for the leader of the Yarn Brigade. I will keep iterating on this and making sure people know how to play your game is the most important and it seems the words just didn't explain it well enough.Shadowed Figure.png and the Mayor one more time, Mayor.png

There is a new version of the game up on itchio that adds a few things I really felt were necessary to make the game fair, more fun and really just what I wanted it to be at it's core. (Most changes based on that juicy, juicy player feedback)

_|Changes|_

Most importantly
  • Added power-ups!!!

showcase4.gif

Also:
  • Fixed enemy spawns so they wont be created too close
  • Added enemy indicators to make it a little fairer for the player
  • Enemies can't shoot or attack from outside the circle
  • Fixed anti-aliasing in the arena

Hopefully these changes make the game more fun and fair for anyone willing to play it :)
