Going Up! - new Android version

Break the System: Cyberpunk Sandbox Platformer

Hey guys, check it out: we have managed to release an epic sandbox platformer about one man's struggle versus the system in a smartly generated nigh endless upwards-facing dungeon! Space Ltd. the huge megacorporation has taken over minds of normal people and YOU are the only one who can possibly bring it down!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/break-the-system

Cover.png

  • Test your wits trying to find a way to outsmart the system and free your friends from being possessed by it.
  • Find a way to climb up the Space Ltd. office building and confront the guards and turrets.
  • Break your usual environment, escape the limits of reality and overcome the hard drive space the server that hosts this cruel game.

glass_optimized.gif

However, this is not an easy task: the first floor of the office building has restricted access to the upper floors, so you will have to find a way to get this access, perhaps, by committing a crime. For the greater good!

shooting_optimized.gif

You can pick up items, throw stuff, shoot people, carry around the company's papers and mostly do whatever your imagination allows in order to achieve the goal. Try out everything, and DO NOT GIVE UP! We believe in you!

Good luck ^_^ (you're gonna need it)

Ludum Dare #42, a quick post mortem

And the theme is…

Saturday, 00:00 (12AM for you weirdos using this kind of time system).
While ldjam.com is offline because a gazillion people want to know the theme, I jump on Twitter and see it: “Running out of space”. Alone in my home, I'm on Discord with my teammates Kokonaught and Noojsan.

Quickly we have an idea we like: the story of a bodybuilder living in a tiny appartment whose life gets harder and harder while he gets bigger and bigger. Gameplaywise it would have been a game with fast paced minigames, kind of like WarioWare.
To keep things open we're still discussing other ideas, one of which is about people living on floating island and being forced to throw stuff overboard to prevent them from sinking.

bodybuilder.gif

After some discussions we decided to go with this second idea. The first one, heavily relying on a large number of minigames to be fun, seemed less jam-oriented.

It is now 02:00 (AM) and I go to sleep in order to get to work early in the morning.

The doubt

I get up around 07:00 (AM) and start building the foundations for our game: an isometric map with tiles disappearing, a character being able to move around and to grab and throw things around.
A little while after my lunch, my teammates are back at work with me (we're in two different time zones so our sleep cycles were offset). Once we're back together something terrible happens: the doubt comes in. It doesn't matter how long we think about it, we can't seem to find something fun and enjoyable to do with this game idea…

So we're back to square one (please do not pass go, do not collect $200). It's the middle of my saturday afternoon and we don't have anything really started. Everything's alright.

Come a couple of hours of despair and discouragement.

A revelation

Saturday, 16:00 (yes, it's 4PM).
A new game idea has appeared! Let's say we make a 2D racing game, kind of a tribute to Micro Machines, where the available space on the track reduces during the race. Wouldn't it be cool? Wouldn't it lead to something fun and enjoyable? Yes?

Let's do it then!

first-sprite.gif

Starting up is not that complicated. I'm quickly programming the car movements, nothing too fancy. Every Godot Engine developer out there already know what I'm using as a placeholder for the car.

In the meantime my coworkers are doing their magic and crafting the first assets.
As a joke, we're saying the music should be some old school techno makina. All of whom have played the game know what is going to happen with that.

first-thing-moving.gif

We decided that the track was being continuously destroyed by bombs every car is dropping while moving. During the evening we're setting up the autotiling system handling holes made in the ground by those bombs.
When I'm going to sleep, the basic mechanics and controls are setup. Two days to go.

Sunday is going to be chill

When I get up after a good night's sleep, I'm welcomed on Discord by a cool mockup of what the game is going to look like. I'm making a quick post with that before getting back to work.

Our Sunday isn't really that interesting. I'm setting up some more things: making the car fall off in holes, prepping some multiplayer controls and camera, etc.
Graphics and music are getting done quickly. Noojsan is experimenting with adding some middle eastern instruments to the music to give it somewhat of a desert vibe, and we make a list of sound effects we'll need.
I also take some time to explain how the animation are working in the engine thanks to a lot of screenshot looking like this:

animation-explanation.png

During the evening, we also decided we needed to find a name. Unlike every other game we've made, we agreed on a name faster than ever. Here's a complete transcription of the discussion:

Kokonaught: Do you have any name ideas?
paulloz: Hum, for now it's called Micro Bombs
paulloz: but it sucks
Kokonaught: I don't know, it needs the word blast
Kokonaught: Like
paulloz: TRACKBLASTERS
Kokonaught: yeah
Kokonaught: sold

With that out of the way, I can work on other things like making our pause menu and some screen transitions. Those screen transitions are done with a simple shader reading a black to white gradient from a PNG file. It's really easy and quick to do and can add a lot of personality to a game.

pause-and-fall.gif

It is the end of day two. Before I go to sleep I explain to Kokonaught how to use the tilemaps in the engine so he can create some tracks if he has time. Once again the explanation is backed with a lot of screenshots.

Dawn of the final day

My final LDJam day begins with a big package of OGG files: all of the audio files are here and it's time to plug them into the game.

music-commit.png

I still have two big things to do: connecting the tracks to one another with a track end screen in between, and making a track selection menu. After that it's going to be polishing time and, if possible, we might add some more stuff.

The screen at the end of each track is pretty straightforward: we're using the same screen as the pause menu and just switching its content.

The selection menu is totally different but not that elaborated. I need to make a quick shader so the background texture scrolls indefinitely, a grid with all the tracks and connect some input events so we switch to the right scene. Done!

What haven't I done yet? Right! A title screen. It's easy as hell, I'll wait until the assets are done.
We need to display a timer during the race. Also, it might be a cool idea to add a Tut Tut Tuuuuuut at the beginning of the races like in any other racing games! Let's do both of those things.

Side note: that's probably the moment we should have thought of adding a visual marker for the finish line.

Wait!
We need to add a shadow to the car!
And the music is too loud in comparison to the sound effects, set it to -6dB!
We have some props to add to the tracks!
The title screen is done, we need to put the assets in the game!

It is the last stretch and I'm now juggling with two artists wanting to refine their work as long as they can.
I can do that. We can do that!
In the meantime we're adding props to the tracks so they don't look and feel boring, obviously.

It is done

M I D N I G H T !
We've gone through the last couple of hours like they were minutes, my heart is pounding at around 300bpm but it's over. And I think we've done a pretty good job. At least, I'm happy with what we did. That's far from always the case.

final-screenshot.png

We're uploading the final build on itch.io, making screenshots and writing a game description while ldjam.com is now imploding and will soon turn into ashes.

First thing I notice once Trackblaster is submitted and the final stress has gone away: as usual I don't want to sleep right now, but at least this time it is not 03:00 yet. Thanks for this time change, I hope it'll stay like that.
What can I extract from LDJam this time? It might not be a good idea to really start your game once more than half a day already passed by. However I'm glad we did not stick with an idea we barely liked just because of the time. And however long or short the jam is, you always can size your game project so it fits the time you have.
I'm happy with what we've made, that's not something I say after each jam. And I'm probably going to work on it to release a true version in a near future.

If you've read this far, thank you very much. Please try out and rate TrackBlasters, it'll make us very happy.

Thanks for the fantastic reviews!

reviews2.png Thanks to all the awesome people who tested and reviewed our game Comfort Zone. It's a very personal game and somewhat of a scary topic to take on for a gamejam, because it's a topic we wanted to handle in a way that does it justice and that can be hard in 3 days. We're really glad that so many people felt that the portrayal was fitting.

Playing games and worm.apk ready for Android!

Hello Ludum Darlings,

Most underrated LD 42 games

So many games in this contest, which many simply did not even notice. I decided to make a list of my most favorite games in the LD 42, which were not given proper attention (in my opinion)

This game does not have enough attention for sure!

Spaced Out

The 80's is back in this oldskool vector style game!

SpacedOutAnimated.gif

After entering last Ludum Dare with a team of 3 people from cMonkeys, i decided to enter this time alone. This was mainly because the other 2 didn't had time and personally i knew i was have little time myself also and i did not wanted to let others time by not putting enough time in.

I had to work the whole weekend so i had to try to squeeze in time between work and sleep:

*Work Shedule: * - Day 1: 6.5 hours - Day 2: 5 hours - Day 3: 6 hours

I knew i had to keep things simple as this so i decided to go for simple art, there i'm by far no artist. After a short brainstorm i decided to take on the vector style approach because i knew i could pull off graphics for this, a nice glow shader made it look even quiet nice.

*What went good: * - Decided on a idea quick and did not change much from the original idea. - Managed to get 'art' and sounds/music done real quick without losing too much time over it. - The actual gameplay code was done quick also

*What went bad: * - To be honest, not much... Most of the 'bad' stuff is just stuff i did not had time to implement like having more powerups, having 2 player local multiplayer, having a online leaderboard, and more polish. - I found out a 'game breaking bug' after 1 day because of some rushed control code that went wrong. This bug only happened for people who turns vsync off on their videocards (i think). Some people reported this and i was able to fix this bug and upload the bugfix.

So... i'm happy with the result, especially because i had so little time to complete this. Please try the game and post your personal record here or on the games comments.

Thanks everyone for trying Trophy hunter !!

How Strict are You?

I've rated 15 or so games, and I don't think i've handed a single 5 star out yet.

Last LD was basically the same, only a few extremely innovative or amazing games got a 5 star from me.

How lenient are you guys with your games?

Want to do it all again?

Getting colse to 40!

header.jpg

Im getting close to 40 ratings, maybe you could help me out? If you leave a constructive comment under my game, I will go and rate yours in return!

Core Mechanic 2: Return in a Portal Brick

Some players I'm sure skip the instructions and we kind of ran out of time on making one of our core mechanics really intuitive. Since we can't make changes for 20 days I figured the least I can do is write a quick post in case anyone does look for an explanation.

brick-portal-320.gif

What is a portal brick? A portal returns your ship back to the hangar and opens up the upgrade/select ship menu again.

Returning to the hangar allows your ship to unload all the space men you pick up which gives you points and money. Your ship has a limited capacity of spacemen it can carry so you have to return to the hangar via a portal frequently.

With that money you collect you can upgrade your ships by clicking the green arrows next to their stats.

So if you don't figure out the concept of the portal then you are missing out on a lot of the game!

space-out-portal-5.gif

How do I open a portal? If you run into the portal brick your ship crashes and explodes. It has to be opened first.

To open a portal you have to bounce your balls off it three times. This can be the same ball deflected back at it or three different balls.

Lasers have no effect on portals.

After three bounces the portal open animation starts. The portal isn't "open" until that animation finishes (I did that on purpose...probably a bit too harsh, hehe)

How do you get more ratings?

I'm seeing a lot of games similar to mine getting a lot of comments and ratings and I really want to know what they're doing to get noticed? I hate spamming, begging for views, and that stupid "rating-for-rating" thing some people do, but I feel like they aren't doing that. How do I get noticed?

Thank you for 20+ votes!

I'm so happy to see a lot of people using blender. It's so nice for making all types of graphics, 2d, 3d... The levels for my compo entry were a breeze to put together and made for a nice effect. In fact all the game graphics were made in blender! scremcap2.png ship/emscene14.png

My favorites so far

I wanted to highlight some of the other games that I've played this Ludum Dare and some of my favorites so far. There used to be a lot more of people talking about other people's games that they were excited about and I want to bring that back! I don't want to be preachy or be on a soap box, but I think that it leads to a better and healthier community. So I figured I would start!

Some of my favorites so far:

Crystalmancer by Crowno (@crowno)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/crystalmancer

Crystalmancer1.png

Crystalmancer has a simple concept but is a ton of fun. Attacking enemies with your wand leaves crystals behind that you can't cross unless you take out your hammer to hit them, which is tough to do in the thick of battle. It has some great Gameboy graphics and sound, and the ability to swap the palette with a button press. Solid all around entry!

Detox by FiloGC (@filogc)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/detox

detox.gif

Detox is a simple game with a simple concept. Just stop the skull and crossbones thingies from falling into the thingie on the bottom of the screen while letting through the other thingies. Check out the high score board. Either people are really talented and the multipliers really add up quick, people found a way to hack the leaderboard, or people have WAAY to much time on their hands

Plenty of Junk by Verbante (@verbante)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/plenty-of-junk

POJ.png

I'm a big fan of crazy physics games and this one is certainly that. Move through the junkyard collecting food to survive (spolier alert, you won't). Then, when you get tired of that, try to abuse the physics engine to launch yourself completely out of the arena. I've never done it, but I've gotten darn close!

Encumbered by DanGraf (@dangraf) , and impbox (@impbox)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/encumbered-deckbuilding-inventory-action

encumbered.png

I love deckbuilding games and this one is super unique. The cards you have are actually sitting in the playing field you are running around in. I'm not exactly sure how, but somehow I broken my own cards and they became useless. Awesome graphics and presentation and music so beautiful it became too distracting so the developer muted it (just kidding. There is no sound). This one plays at a fixed size, so if you can't see some of the board you have to increase your resolution or change the scale and layout options (in Windows 10) to see everything. Solid and a lot of fun.

Did you know you can see a list of the games you've already rated?

Just click on the Ludum Dare 42 link on the top of the site and then click the Me button. It is a great way to be able to go back and replay or promote the games you really enjoyed! This has been a great jam everyone. Thanks for participating!

Running out of Toaster - My full compo timelapse video and a small post-mortem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVl0f4VTz9U

I've been participating in the Ludum Dare since the 39th edition. With one Jam entry, one time when I had unfortunately given up on my work and two Compo entries - this is the second time I do it and the first time I do record my work, which is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time.

My last compo game, Dream Roamers, was kind of an improvisational game. It had a procedural generation system... which was a pretty big hack itself, but you know, the CPU is technically a rock that we tricked into thinking, so why worry about some minor hacks? Anyway, the game I released was an ode to the likes of The Binding Of Isaac and Monolith, which presumably I'd be able to execute better than my platformer for the Ludum Dare 39, Burning Low, which was... not very satisfying from my part.

But this time, I took another shot at the platformer style, and this post will try to explain what went through my head while I was doing what you see above in the video.

  • First steps

It started with a little brainstorm I had while I was at the bus coming home. Running out of space... why not outer space? Why not make an alien race take over all the planets known to them and have nothing more to explore, and dig a portal to a parallel dimension? So, what are they going to find there? Cthulhu? Or... pans and blenders and food mixers? One thing I like about the idea of brainstorming is that sometimes, "why?" isn't the right question to be asked. Try "why not?" instead, and if you can't come up with a good answer to that, well, you're on the right track.

So I got home, what was the plan, if there's any? Build the player character, the jump mechanics, try to make sure the jump isn't too floaty because that's definitely a problem for me... worry about the art later. Making the graphics is what I hate the most. As for the mechanics, the intention was to create something that resembles Metal Slug or Cuphead (which is a game that I've been playing lately and it's fantastic). Shoot and run. For someone that's spending the day playing >20 jam games, simple mechanics are better.

So, number 1: don't ask why, ask why not. Number 2: always think of the player experience, it's them who are going to tell if the game is good or not.

  • The enemies

My first idea for an enemy was the food mixer. The god damn food mixer... it may not seem so in the video because the time span is too short, but it was a hell of a hard thing to draw. Those metal parts... ugh. You never know how hard it is to draw a food mixer until you actually go and try to do it. In the end, it was a little bit crooked, but that did it.

From this point on, I started making the art before the mechanics of the enemies themselves, because you know, what can be worse than the freaking food mixer? The blender was pretty easy, and all it did was throw pieces of food randomly up (which later proved to be pretty OP and I had to nerf it after some player feedback). The pan was something that I did before, all it does is throw bullets at the player.

  • Level design

That's when Godot came in big into play. Designing a level using the TileMap node isn't just easy, but it's just... pleasing. You're able to literally paint your way through the level, and it all went well. The Light2D added some pretty good effects (as there were many of them in convenient places, they became checkpoints for the level later). One little "game over" screen sending the player to their last checkpoint and we were good to go. Time for my favorite part of the development:

  • The music

Even when I'm sleep deprived and tired of looking at Godot's editor all day, composing music brings me to a whole new level of joy. There is something about finding a good chord progression and making a melody over it which makes it all worth it. And this time, I decide to go for what's been the most successful in my past games, the metal-like piano/organ melodies. One song for the intro part and another for the level were just enough. I had planned to make a different song for the boss fight, but 48 hours isn't a lot of time and I didn't want to strain myself too much.

Between the songs, I was able to get an incredible amount of 6 hours of sleep!

  • The intro and a surprise boss battle

Ok, I thought the idea to deliberately omit the skip button for my 45-second intro and joke about it would be well accepted by the players as an expression of good humor and art. It turns out, people hated it. What can I do? You win some, you lose some. Also only one person seemed to get that sneaky Borderlands 2 reference. Sigh... still, a little animation and a pixelated planets background made it all prettier and we were good to go.

That was when I realized I actually had plenty of time left, which is something that doesn't usually happen at the compo. So again, why not add a toaster which rolls at the player and bounces and throws slices of breads and... I was pretty heated, so everything went better than expected.

  • Final thoughts

I may not have delivered a game as good as my project had promised, maybe because of technical issues or because I deliberately made bad decisions. But that happens to just about everyone, and either from our own experience or reading player feedback, we're all learning. Today I released a post-compo edition solving issues that I saw players complaining about the most (the skip button, checkpoints that got you stuck into walls, etc.), and it might still get some more updates, depending on how much free time I have left.

But after all, as I said, it's the players who decide if the game is good or not. So, let the ratings speak for themselves, and I hope I make it to the top 100 games again. For everyone reading this, I hope I'm able to give you a good time with my game, and I'm looking forward to see more of what you have to show.

Who's for Dinner?

For this Ludum Dare, the team and I decided to just have fun with it. There were so many things that didn't make sense. Setting - Kitchen; Player with bunny hat! Giant slipper Gun. Wild animations. It was funny when someone adds something, another member would go, "that doesn't make any sense!" and then another member goes, "it doesn't have to be, it's just a game". So the crazy feature ends up being in the game.

I hope you guys enjoy our game as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Join the Vogons! See the Galaxy! Blow up planets!

Since just barely finishing the jam on monday night I've been meaning to make a post to share my game, Vogon Constructors Ltd. I struggled with the theme initially, due to it being the sort that was more prescribing mechanics than offering prompt. But I had also wanted to tie in a little Hitchhikers Guide reference in honour of it being LD42, which is where the idea came about.

vogon_03.png

In VCL, you play as the Vogon Constructor Fleet and must destroy planets to make way for Hyperspace Bypasses. However, each planet is also producing resources; and the Bypasses themselves can only be between populated systems, so the idea was to be sacrificing systems in an ever shrinking "space" of usable nodes.

I was going to tackle this as a team but it ended up being just me. It turned out well, all things considered (I had social commitments and work, so it was far from a full burn). Please give it a go! It's probably not well balanced, but destroying the planets is fun.
