Time to start brainstorming
Bad time to have friends over, but oh well. Will probably start work tomorrow, spend this evening brainstorming

There was a circular platform with like 20 cars on it... And it got smaller and smaller until all cars but one dropped off...
Does anyone know what the name of this game was?
I can't get rid of the basic concept of your playing field getting smaller and smaller, just need to think of something more long-running than that Amiga game... Or maybe pimp it with some live-saving items... Hmm... Let's see if this idea evolves until tomorrow morning xD
As soon as the theme was announced, it wasn't long before I had three basic ideas that just popped in my head.
Dealing with memory and space on a digital scale (like running out of space on a phone or computer).
Environment disappears over time.
Finding places to fit stuff in.
Now I'm in the process of marking down a game that can fit any or all of these ideas. The brainstorming process has been fairly quick this time around.
our game idea is that you have a brain and pieces of information fall into it. as you progress the brain fills up and the pieces fall into it faster. there will be good pieces of information and bad pieces of information. you will have to click on the bad information to delete it and make room for the good information
for this moment i really have no idea what suppose i want to make on this theme-_-
Writing my ideas on the last post-it note, but I...
... ran out of space.
NUMBER OF IDEAS 0...
That's the least theme I wanted. Made a game last month for another game jam that fits perfectly to it (https://lucbarr.itch.io/claustrophobia). Feels like cheating because we had lots of ideas with it that are still very fresh.
ld 41 meme i made :D
My idea is pretty special, and only loosely falls into the realm of "Running out of space". Not the capacity type of space, I mean OUTER space.
Is this allowed?
While we were doing our brainstorming, the multicollored speaker friend cant participate in the jam cause working problems D=. But we WONT GIVE UP! thanks to him we got our idea for the game.
Idea for the other developers btw. You can put a game on running out of cinematic bars (the ones on the edges of the screen) while doing puzzles based on movies! Good luck!

Made this live on Twitch once the theme was announced. We're doing this.

Big Crunch

Woke up in a laboratory. He just found out that, he is a part of a experiment for his whole life. He just need to escape to earth.
He just asked his self: "Am I Human?"
I'm off to bed now, but first I have a game idea that I just wanna throw out there quickly, see what people think of it.
Basically, it's Asteroids, but every time you destroy an asteroid it leaves a hole in the background that you can't fly through. You have to be strategic in where the asteroids are positioned when you destroy them, or you'll literally run out of space to move through and become a sitting duck. There might need to be some kind of mechanism to stop players from sitting around for minutes until an asteroid appears in just the right place... maybe I can use UFOs for that. Also, special asteroids that heal the background when shot?
I must admit, I'm having a harder time with this theme than I did last year. Still in the "spitballing" phase. But yeah, would this work> Don't wanna go ahead and try it and then find out halfway through that it won't work for some reason.
In for the Jam!
Using UE4, free 3D assets, probably PhotoShop as well. :)

I don't even know what the theme is yet, but I'll give it a try again.
Here's a thing that happens at every LD. The theme is announced and immediately, a wave of negativity blankets the intertubes: "What a terrible theme. I have no ideas. Guess I'll just give up."
I mention this because the "bad theme" reaction is the symptom, not the disease. The disease is in not having a toolbox of skills and techniques for creative direction, and as a result everything is based on gut reactions.
I don't know if I'll actually finish this weekend, but I think I can demonstrate how to make an appealing concept. The technique I use is called the "coherency game". The goal of the game is to answer all the questions I have about how the game might be made. Some of these questions I don't have to worry about, like my choice of tools and technology(I'm going to be using PICO-8). Others are thorny, like settling on a game concept.
The way the coherency game works is to start with a quick brainstorm and make a list, including the theme or other requirements:
I don't need a lot of ideas in this list. A rule of the coherency game is that I can only keep around as many ideas as I can remember. Four is fine to start.
Now, I start comparing every pair of ideas to see if they have a reasonably strong coherence(a term borrowed from philosophy), or whether they contradict each other. This is an informal process and relies on your good taste, which I'm sure you have. Coherency isn't exactly consistency, but consistency is a good starting point for judging coherency. What we want is concepts that can support each other well.
Where the ideas don't make sense together, I should start changing, adapting or combining them. This optimizes our idea set towards coherence. The reason why we want coherence is because it puts the whole concept on solid ground, where it's easy to get our imagination going and think about which features are important and give them a hard priority. When the concept is incoherent, its implementation tends to expand in scope without ever resolving.
What I noticed in the last set was that while hard drives and oxygen didn't spark any ideas, there is a gas seal in hard drives, which made me think of vapors, which made me think of vaporwave and how it recycles stuff. So I swapped in both vapor and recycling.

OK. This is looking like something. A trash planet vaporwave aesthetic, where if you run out of bytes on your hard drive the game is over. 300 megabytes. Let's add in some more concretely mechanical aspects so that I can start thinking about how to build it.
Sector editor
Running out of space : Driving ✔️
Although driving fits with vaporwave and its love of cruising in old sports cars, it doesn't fit with "vapor" - the gas - quite as well, and sector editing is a bridge too far. Recycling and driving are also kind of iffy.
I decided to try putting vapor and recycling back together and focus on something that would give a sense of movement.
So: You're driving through your hard drive's sectors to edit them. The drive is running out of space. There's a race track representing the drive that you "circulate" through. There are still a few things to work out about implementation, but I think I can run with this concept. Time to take a break.
