LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

You guys need to quit whining about the theme.

  • Ludum Dare has never been about themes -- it's about making games and having fun. You can make a game and have fun without a theme, and if you really hate it, you can adapt or ignore it.
  • The theme is there purely for inspiration, not for putting unnecessary restrictions or challenges on people. and I personally think there is a much better chance of developing new creative ideas when you're presentend with a theme you didn't expect or wish for.
  • If you've been participating for several years and still annoyed about themes, you should either rethink your priorities or pick another one of those hundreds of game jams out there. The voting process is democratic, so by definition, the least annoying theme will be picked -- your opinion is no more valuable than everyone else's.

OK, I'm done complaining now. I wish you all a great jam this weekend! :)

I will be joining in for the first time. I am greatly looking forward to participating, I just hope that I can finish in time.

I hope that everyone that participate has a great time.

First Time! My body is ready.

This will be my first time participating in a game jam. So I have prepared my brain for excessive caffeine intake and expansion of my skill set. I'll be using Unity, Aseprite, sfxr for most of my stuff. Let the games begin!

We're almost there

In only a few hours now we'll all be getting our hands dirty attemping to finish a game worthy of playing in only 3 or even 2 days. I'm pretty pumped and ready to go. Good Luck to you all! Screenshot_7.png

Czech Republic?

Anyone from Czech Republic or near? :flagcz: :flagcz: :flag_cz: |prague.jpg

In for the third time!

As the title says, I'm in! Had great times for my two previous participations, hope this will be even better!

I plan to keep on using godot, inkscape as main tools. Maybe I'll try to use lmms for audio if I have time, but I don't know well the software, I may prefer using bosca ceoil as I did for my previous entries. We will see.

Will not have much time on Saturday, but being busy won't prevent me from having ideas, so I hope I will begin saturday evening with something in head and enjoying creating.

I wish you all much fun, I'm thrilled to be in! Good luck everyone!

Shelter is in the lead?

https://strawpoll.com/3bdzwp5b Although the strawpoll is pretty much always wrong, it is still pretty interesting to follow. I am honestly suprised that so many people like shelter, if you do, mind letting me know why? I don't feel like it inspires any good games.

Well... I Feel Silly!

So I've been all pumped up for my first game jam. Not entirely (but in large part) because of LD, I'd booked a day off work... Friday.

I'd seen it started at 2:00am my time and I'd seen it was 26th - 29th... as prepared to get a REALLY early night to get up stupidly early and start the jam as soon as the theme drops, I realised that the start time for me is 2:00am on the 27th!

That'll teach me to pay attention.

So it's too short notice to swap my Friday off for a Monday off (and in any case I do have some other stuff going on tomorrow), but it looks like my inaugural Jam will be on a Compo time limit :( But hey ho, I intend to make the best of it. Still really looking forward to this, will be there at kick off on the Saturday and raring to go. Have a great Jam everyone.

Not This Time

Sadly, I have too much on my plate and will likely have to miss this Ludum Dare. I might try to get something barebones out by the end of the jam, but it’s unlikely. I’ll try to enter next time around.

Good luck to all the other entrants! Remember to have fun, and get some sleep if you can!

I'm In! (has been a while)

Ok, so, I think 2013 was the last time I did this so I have to say I'm pretty excited to be back.

I've recently been teaming up with some published horror writers on a new interactive fiction project which has got me back into development. Don't expect anything graphically fancy from me as I'm going to be going for more of the text based game with Twine. This does however mean that the build will be web based so most people should be able to play it. (If I finish it!)

My current team are occupied with their book promotions this weekend so I'll be doing this one solo.

I wish everyone the best of luck and I hope you all get enough sleep to at least remember how to human.

My thoughts and opinions on the final themes

ld44 theme new.PNG

Alright so, as you can tell, I only gave themes a +1 or -1, reason being that it's the final and most important theme voting round. My 'strategy' for this, was giving a theme a +1 if I thought I could make an interesting, and unique game out of it, and a -1 if I didn't think I could (for the most part).

1)Limited memory -1: I could only think up one interesting game idea for this one, and I feel that all of the games would have a similar concept, and gameplay to them.

2)Ridiculously overpowered -1: I think a game where anything is intentionally over powered would get either extremely boring, or extremely frustrating after only a small amount of time. What I mean by that is: If the player were extremely overpowered, then he would just mow down everything in his way, and it would provide no challenge for the player at all. And if the enemies were extremely overpowered, then it would become very frustrating very quickly, because the player would be completely powerless.

3)Your life is currency +1: I feel like this could be a good theme because there are so many angles you could go at it from, you could use the theme as a metaphor of sorts, you could make a wave survival game where the cost for upgrades and better weapons was your life itself, and many more. All and all, I think it would be a fun theme to make a game out of.

4)Side effects +1: This would be a good theme because it's broad, but not too broad at the same time. It does not define what the side effects are from, or what the side effects are, but that's completely up to the developer(s). You could take it literally and use side effects from heavy medication, maybe playing around with hallucinations, or you could use it as kind of like an 'actions have consequences' type thing.

5)Space exploration -1: This does not give the developer(s) enough freedom. I think every game would turn out very similar.

6)Change the genre of a classic game -1: All this would be is glorified plagiarism, with a twist added on. You would have to either download all the assets from the game, or you would have to recreate them all by hand. Not to mention that it wouldn't give the developers very much creative freedom.

7)Only one enemy -1: I gave this a -1 because it just seems a little bland to me. I would be fine with making a game out of it, but it's not one of my favorites.

8)Risky powerups -1: This defines a feature in the game instead of giving a theme to base your game off of.

9)Shelter +1: This is very broad, and gives developers a lot of creative freedom. You could again use it in a metaphorical sense, or use it quite literally.

10)Color changes everything -1: I gave this a -1 because I feel that the theme would create games with very bad looking graphics, and I believe almost everyone would end up using the same colors for things as other people (i.e red = enemy, green = friendly).

11)Everything has a price -1: I would definitely enjoy this theme, but it seems too similar to 'Your life is currency', and I liked 'Your life is currency' a lot more.

12)Contagious +1: I like this theme because of how many games differnet could come out of it.

13)Tiny town -1: I don't like the feel of this theme, it seems to define the place that the game is set in, but not so much the game itself.

14)Mutation +1: Yet again a very broad theme, that allows developer(s) to have a lot of creative freedom.

15)No upgrades only downgrades -1: This would just make the game more and more frustrating to the players, thus giving everyone lower ratings on their games.

16)Underground -1: So this theme was originally 'One room', but that was a theme for a previous LD, so it seems like the mods must've come in and changed it. Anyway, I think that this is similar to 'Tiny town', seeing that it gives the place and not a theme.

Alright everyone, those are my opinions, make sure to keep that in mind, they're just opinions, no need for anyone to get angry about them!

Have a good Ludum Dare everyone!

Rating time?

Sorry, I did not find this information. How long is the rating time after the game jam is finished? And ist the rating already open, when the compo is finished but the jam is still running?

Going Open Source for this LD44!

My team is going to use opensource tools (such as godot, krita, aseprite, etc. )for this ludum dare! Also, if you are interested, we are gonna stream the whole event here https://www.twitch.tv/northernhawk

Can't wait for my fourth LD! I've already set some goals. You?

This weekend I will participate in my fourth game jam, and hopefully submit something for the third time

This time I set some goals, so I will be able (at least I hope so) to get the most out of this jam.
