LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

Which should I use?

I’m going to use java Processing 3, or p5.js due to both having OpenGL and WebGL built in removing hours of extra programming time.

But I don’t know which to choose, Processing 3 is used to make desktop applications and runs faster(but limits which OS can use it). While p5.js is used for making web based applications but runs slower (due to being in a browser).

Any one have any ideas about which to choose? I have experience in both so it won’t bother me which you think. Also anyone have any suggestions on what to host the p5.js application if I choose that? Thanks good luck!

Also sorry for the formatting I don’t know why its doing that.

I’m back again!

Hello everyone! I’m returning for me third Ludum Dare. The hype is so real I accidentally announced on Twitter that it was last week instead of this week, haha. Can’t wait!

Tools I’ll use: Language: JavaScript + Phaser 3 Art: Aseprite, Paint.NET Sound: sfxr Music: GarageBand, or my guitar :p

Good luck to you all!

Final round themes

I got surprised that most of them are, if not good, at least tolerable. However, there are a few themes I have doubts about.

* Change the genre of a classic video game *

How can one do this without breaking copyright laws? Let's say I want to turn Pac-Man to a platformer. Clearly I cannot call it Pac-Man or use the pac-man character in the game. Should I just replace it with, say, a dog, pills with dog food and ghosts with something that eats dogs?

* Color changes everything *

What if there are people who cannot see colors properly (e.g. due to color blindness), wouldn't this be a little bad theme for them?

* Tiny town *

Didn't we have something like this just a few LDs ago? (It was small world or something).

EDIT:

* Limited memory *

A DOS game?

My First Jam

I want to say Good Luck to everyone.

actually, I'm just excited and nervous right now. I don't know what to say :D. I made two small games and didn't published them. Hopefully, I can make something that I proudly post it on internet. So yeah, let's go out of our comfort zone. Have fun

first jam

hello and good luck to everyone

I have been developing games for many years but this will be my first jam. I will be using unity

No Time for Half Measures

Final Votes.png

All yes or no from me on these final themes. I know that if some theme I didn't want won I would be stuck thinking that it happened because of me using 0s rather than my + or -1s. Thankfully I know I can come up with a good idea for all of these themes. I'm still personally a little worried about the chance I will scope to big or worse scope to small (like I did for my LD43 game.) I have already got a pretty good idea about what genre of game I wan't to make this LD so I guess now all I can do is wait for the theme announcement and hope that its one of the good ones (fat chance I know, but you never know sometimes the impossible happens.)

I'm in (over my head)!

So I want to play around with some technologies... and recently rented a cheap Ubuntu 18.04 server...

So I'll be using: HTML5 + Javascript front-end (with some CSS formatting probably), jQuery for back-end calls... And on the back-end side (with Apache2) running Python Flask and probably an SQL database to allow for leaderboards or somesuch.

That's a lot of technology for a 48h game jam... but me working with things I'm not used to and making things a lot more complicated than need be has become sort of a tradition by now.

As for Art, Sound, etc? No clue. Probably simple stuff.

Creativity through limitations...

Looking forward to this one! Doing a super limit retro style game using only 8 colours, 160x90 pixel resolution and a single 64x64 pixel 8x8 tile sheet for level designs. All made on Construct 2, Aseprite and Caustic 3. Roll on friday!

Excitement is Rising!

Estimados Amigos,

Excited for my first Ludum Dare/First Game to get started. I hope everyone has a great rest of the week, and a memorable weekend. I can’t wait to play the games you create, and I hope my game is halfway tolerable by a few of you.

Bless, Naomhin

In! With some luck.

Going to be short on time, but really wanting to finish something. Good luck!

LudumDare44 vs Avenger's Endgame

hmm, This time it is all about endgame, but the LudumDare comes with the same weekend.. Lot of time juggling.. probably will get help of Dr. Strange.. This changes everything..

Finally, my plans for this jam is

: learn and develop a networking game

or: learn and develop a html5 game and: don't just want to develop a game or gameplay mechanics which i already done.

Lets see how the endgame goes.. Cheers to all the jammers..

Final Vote round

  1. Risky powerups
  2. Tiny town
  3. Ridiculously overpowered

Do you know how to create an interesting choice? What can happen in a small town where everything is in the palm of your hand? I just want to see it! Be sure to find a couple of teams that will create an unexpected masterpiece.

What is Fragment Jam?

Fragment Jam is a game jam focused on admiring and sharing unfinished games (fragments). Maybe you want to revisit these projects someday, maybe you want closure and to move on, perhaps you want to make a fragment for the jam. Fragment Jam is here to help sort it out and to provide a platform for celebrating and sharing our fragments.

Other cool things:

  • ~$200 in Game Prizes awarded randomly to participants!
  • YouTubers and Streamers organised to play your entries and give feedback!

Weapons For this jam - Unity - Photoshop - FL Studio 20 - Blender

I'm In

Exhausted, tons of work to do... Hey why not do another jam with an engine I never used before? That seems like a great idea!

The weapons this time: * Krita (or maybe aseprite?) * Deflemask + Chiptone * Godot

Everybody let's do our best!

My Base Code for LD44

Once again I will be using my base code that I have built up since LD 26. It is written in JavaScript and can be used to create HTML5/canvas games. You can find the base code on github: https://github.com/ZYXer-/base-code-2d

Features: - a simple game loop - mouse/keyboard input processing - image/sound/webfont preloading - dealing with different screen resolutions

Additional classes for: - playing sounds (using SoundManager2) - loading and displaying PNG fonts - particle systems - pathfinding (using A*) - image processing class to generate 8-bit style graphics - utility functions for procedural map generation - simple one-body physics - a text class that is way more powerful than fillText() - scaling to easily display pixelart at various screen resolutions

I’m distributing the code under the GPL2 license, so feel free to use any part of it for your own project. And please – like always – report any bugs ;)

In for the 3rd time!

I've been so hyped for the next LD from the moment the previous one ended, and now it's finally time again! As usual, my main two goals are upload something, and make that something as fun as possible to play.

Tested the whole UE4 HTML5 export and hosting on itch.io before the jam instead of during (definitely didn't do that last time... really... :innocent:), so this time my game should be playable in the browser!

The tools I'll probably be using: - Unreal Engine 4 - Visual Studio 2017 - Gimp/Aseprite (depending on the aesthetic) - Blender - LMMS, never really used it before but I don't want to opt out of sound again

Quick question: does anyone else feel like the actual jam/compo itself is incredibly stressful and the entire thing (including working on the game) suddenly becomes fun once you've uploaded something?

Maybe I'm just taking it too seriously every time.

Good luck everyone, and have fun!

I'm a bit sad with the themes + technologies I think I'll use

So, we got the final round and most of my greened themes ( I green a lot ! ) didn't make it. It's not all bad as I can work around the themes we got, even though the very few themes I colored red are present. Maybe it's a sign of bad taste. Some people say themes are bad but I can always think of many different game features with it.

Let's take a theme I didn't like : "You have 30 seconds", well it's not that I didn't like it, it's more that I don't feel enthusiastic about it.

Anyway most of the people complaining about that one were saying that you can pretty much do nothing except "make a timer or something in 30 seconds" but I can come up with a lot of features with that if I take the time to think about it.

-Those 30 seconds could be a ressource you can give to NPC, you literaly have those 30 seconds in your pocket. -They can be indeed a timer but in slow motion, or just they can be 30 turns, every turn lasting a second in the game system. -They can be in a gestion game how much time you take to brew, cook, build or anything like that, again working more like a ressource than something else. -They can be 30 differents enemies, all representing a second in time, you have to interact with them in order to beat the game

and so on and so on... From the dawn of time people have always used limitation to work they way around those limitations, these themes are the opportunity to do that in my mind. As a creator, the more I can be limited, the more happy I am.

However this time, I don't feel limited, I feel very free, too free to do whatever I want and it bums me off. But hey ! That's part of the game I guess, here's are my votes, they might change.

Capture.PNG

I think i'll use: -Unity -Aseprite -FL Studio 20 -Pixel FX Studio And some website to do sfx

LD here we go

Hi.

This is my first jam, not sure how it will end up (if it ends with a submission at least, that would be huge success for sure), but oh well.

Probably gonna try it with Godot and see, where it brings me. Anyway, good luck everyone.
