LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

First Time Participating

So this will be my first Ludum Dare and I'm really excited, can't wait for the final voting. I'm not such a good programmer (more of a design dude) but I'll probably be using either Unity or Godot, and for graphics mostly Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI for sketching.

Hope everything goes well! '°'

I'm in.

7th Ludum Dare, here we go!

I'm In!

This'll be my first LD! :D

I'm going for top 100 again but this time i'll actually make it.

My choices for the final round

I’m really glad limited memory made it to the final round, got my fingers crossed for that one. In all the final themes aren’t that bad, I’ll probably be happy with whatever is chosen (although I downvoted quite a lot, I know. I just wanted to make the most difference for the themes I have the most inspiration for)

Many thanks Ajay for keynoting.

Fun Stuff

Ajay was motivated, and took care of setting up some posts (that I've been neglecting to do myself, oops):

Does your team need a musician?

TL;DR: Would your team be interested in a musician to do an adaptive score for your upcoming Ludum dare game? Hit me up!

Hey there everybody, happy upcoming Ludum Dare weekend!

My name is Martín, I've been participating since LD39, but for reasons out of my control (...cough Work, Avengers, Game of Thrones) I won't have enough time to do a game. So I thought I could find a team and only do what I love to do the most, the music.

Ok, so... Is anybody interested in an adaptive soundtrack?

I'm a musician and a programmer, and I have used this to do interesting things in my games. I have a tradition to always make an adaptive soundtrack for my Ludum Dare games. Here are examples from my previous games:

  • LD39: Ted Crashed! You have to add fuel to a rocket and the music transition smoothly from an acoustic to an electric version (with a sweet sax solo) as you fill the fuel tank.
  • LD40: Bus Mayhem You drive a bus and, as you pick up more people, the music adds more instruments to the arrangement.
  • LD41: I didn't finish the game. But the idea was to do a genre change when changing abilities.
  • LD42: The Game Collector It was based on the history of game consoles, and as you level up, the song changed the arrangement to reflect how it would sound in that console era sound chips.
  • LD43: A Band Story You played as a trio that needs to pick up their instruments, and yeah, the song added the player instrument when you do.

Making the music speeds up with the speed of the character, change the arrangement to reflect the game status, make the music sync up with a game mechanic or graphics, whatever we can imagine. So yeah, if your team thinks this could be useful to add to the game mechanics, hit me up. I could even help with the programming of the sound engine, especially if you guys use Unity because I already have the scripts ready.

If you wanna check other stuff:

Any questions don't doubt to comment here, or you can add me on discord Martin#2351

Thanks for your time, and good luck on the jam everybody!!!

Writers - Interactive Fiction team

I'm part of team Prolog - we're a bunch of natural language programmers. We're going to have a stab at Ludum Dare this weekend, using the classic Prolog language - developed for processing human language. We're recruiting writers for our planned interactive fiction game. email anne@swi-prolog.org or @aindilis on this site to be included.

It's going to be tight, but I'm in!... also, I'm trying to build a thing...

This will be my 15th time participating and the start of my 6th year of doing this :). Saturday my wife and I made plans with some friends to drive up to their house and see Avengers Endgame. For that reason, most of my Saturday is shot, but I'm going to give it a try anyways. Last time I had a conflict I didn't finish. Having even less time may finally trigger something in my brain to keep the idea simple. We'll see.

I usually use C#/MonoGame, Paint.NET, Gimp, Inkscape, Bosca Ceoil, and other tools, but I'm keeping things open.

Also, I'm trying to also build a thing...

I've created a number of games for Ludum Dare, and I look back on them fondly. When I have friends & family over it's something I like to share, but going to the computer and bringing them up or fumbling with my phone kills be present with people. The experience is different when I reminiscence about the SNES games I played as a kid where I can pull out and/or the display the cartridges & boxes I have sitting around or on display. Physical things source conversation and give us a chance to share experiences with others, and they bring life to a room...

With all that said, I'm curious if there is a desire in the community for a service that would allow you to print a physical release of your game. A print-on-demand thing like Shutterfly or The Game Crafter (but focused on video games). You'd design the box art & instruction booklet within a template, upload them & your game, and then receive a copy in the mail. I think something like this would be valuable, but I really don't know.

I had intended on building out the infrastructure to "launch" an MVP of the service in conjunction with this weekend to see if anyone would be interested, but I fell flat on getting a site together (only a landing page :(). I have the capability to create boxes and manuals. Here are some reproduction boxes I've created as I've learned to make them:

example1.png

I've made a bunch more boxes to get the process down. The boxes are roughly 5 inches wide, 7 inches tall, and 1 inch thing. They are about the same size as a SNES box, but thinner. They are also 2 pieces top/bottom like a sturdy board game box. Shrink wrapped they look great on a shelf. I have less experience with manuals, but do have the capability.

What I'd like to know... Is this something you'd be interested in? Should something like this exist for hobbyist game devs? Would you like a copy of your game to put on your shelf? Feel free to reach out to me at:

shawn@lostprintgames.com.

Good luck everyone, have fun!

The Jam and Avengers: End Game

So of course I bought End Game tickets for Saturday at 12:30am... There goes ~4 hours of jam time. Hopefully I'll get some inspiration from the movie? Oh well.

I'm in for a bit!

This will be my 15th LD in a row. This one will be tough since I'll be at a robotics competitions, but I'll probably just end up making a one hour game.

Language and Library: Java with Lib-GDX

Graphics: Paint.NET, Piskel, Inkscape

Music: Probably nothing

SFX: Might use SFXR if I have time or just Audacity.

Good luck everyone!

Team Cocoa Moss is IN yet again for LD44

DDRKirby(ISQ) here, reporting that team Cocoa Moss will again be joining in for LD44! I'll be teaming with @xellaya again this time, using the usual suite of tools (Unity3D, FL Studio, etc.), along with the usual janky starter code -- this time also upgrading to Unity 2019 (which I've already taken for a test drive -- looking like it's ok so far!).

This'll be my 21st time entering Ludum Dare and my 13th time working with xellaya. At this point I don't have any real goals, but some points worth noting for this time: - We have an event on Friday night so will lose some brainstorming time, and xellaya will be unavailable on Monday, so we'll be a bit tighter on time than usual. We'll do our best to pick something manageable, but it's always hard to pick a game that's both interesting yet easy to make while still fitting the theme... =X - I've recently totally revamped my collection of instruments from classic SNES games! I haven't done a whole lot of work with SPC-style music so it may potentially be fun to take that for a spin this time!

I've already gone ahead and updated all the requisite libraries and programs, and forked over a new bitbucket repo as well as making a dropbox folder for asset sharing. I'm also ready to start cross-posting our games onto itch.io now, which is pretty exciting and should help for discoverability!

Remaining TODOs left before the event starts: - Need to finish up some artwork for an album release for the end of the month. - Do a big grocery run and stock up on food and snacks! :D - Laundry... - Rest well and don't get sick =X

A few additional notes:

For musicians, the skill of creating music in a really short timeframe can be invaluable during a jam such as Ludum Dare where you need to create all of your assets within the jam itself. One Hour Compo happens every Thursday and I can't recommend it more as practice for learning to optimize your workflow!

Please review the rules one more time before you start. I've seen more and more entries getting submitted that don't quite adhere to the rules, so I'd like to reiterate:

  • For the compo, ALL OF YOUR CONTENT (i.e. Art, Music, Sound, etc) must be created in 48 hours.
  • For the jam, you're free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that YOU MUST OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game.

I repeat, if you use artwork or music that you did not personally create within the jam timeframe, OPT OUT OF THE RESPECTIVE VOTING CATEGORY. Please also GIVE CREDIT to the original artists -- you wouldn't want anybody shamelessly stealing your work and it's the same for everyone else.

Good luck to all, and see you all at the starting line!

PS: Vote no on "Everything has a price" and "No upgrades, only downgrades"! -- come on guys, we literally just did "Sacrifices must be made"...

This is gonna be tough...

Just remembered about ludum dare today and I'm in the middle of a move with no internet connection :\ Don't know if I might be able to make it or how long I'll might be able to work on the game but at least I wanna try :)

In for LD44

Going to try to make a game again!

My last two games were Pyramidion and Labrats.

pyremss/emsmall.png labratsemss/emsmall.png

Going to use the same tools as last time:

Unity
Aseprite
Procreate + iPad Pro
Audacity

Good luck everyone!

Usually a solo Dev, looking for team

I work with unreal engine 4 and blender. I can do all aspects of game development besides sound creation. Normally, I run a game development studio solo, but my friend and I are looking for a team to work with us this time.

Obligatory Entry Post

I'm gonna do the Jam again.

I posted my starter project (with real basic UI flow and leaderboard support) here: https://github.com/zenanon/LDTemplate
