Sammy and the Orb - Director's Cut Out Now!

SammyemBoxart/emTitle.png

Howdy everyone! I've been a little quieter than usual this time around, but with under two hours left on the clock I'd like to bring your attention to a brand new version of my entry, Sammy and the Orb.

The Director's Cut brings together a handful of unfinished features and assets into what we feel is a much more representative version of the game. It doesn't fix everything - heck, it doesn't even fix the most common gripe (the controls) - but it does represent what we would have put out if we'd had one more day to work on this.

What's new: - Added level select menu that was cut from the original game at the last minute. - Updated lighting to better fit the mood. - Added / updated textures for existing models. - Added all new environment models including vents, light fixtures, and access panels. - Retouched the soundtrack. - Added sound effects for almost all in-game actions. - Added acid pits complete with death-effects. - Added new animations for emotes, resets, and deaths. - Added full support for X-Box controls (documentation arriving shortly!) - Fixed audio options sliders.

I invite you all to come check it out if you can spare the time.

PS: If you've never played the original that's fine! We're not too bad off on ratings, so it's not a problem if you just want to come check it out without rating :)

INSIDE THE LOOP - Playing some great games from LudumDare 47 Jam right now :-)

INSIDE THE LOOP --> https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/inside-the-loop. <-- Browser HTML5/Win/Mac

We would love to be able to try, rate and give feedback on all games out there but no human on earth can do that with several thousands entries ! But some are so brilliant !!

I hope by rating and giving feedback people get what they deserve for their awesome work :-)

If you have a minute go check out the mysterious loop game we did.

Final Hours - Favourite Entry Spotlight!

There have been loads of really fantastic entries I've played this time (everyone give yourself a pat on the back ) and it's impossible to choose the "best". But the game that most surprised me with its excellence this time round is https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/its-happening-again

If a text-based, surreal, body-horror nightmare sounds like something you'd like, I implore you to play this game (less than 2 hours to rate!).

Incredible writing.

Incredible art.

Incredible audio.

One of my all-time favourite text-based games.

There isn't much more to say, try it!

Let's trade ratings before the deadline! ⏰

Hey, fellow procrastinators! We're getting close to the deadline and I'm sure some of you are short on ratings like me. Link your game in the comments here and I'll check it out shortly!

My game is a side-scrolling shooter called "Closed Circuit", and I could certainly use some ratings as well: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/closed-circuit

A bit of a retrospective on my progress as a developer.

My goodness! This has been an incredible experience taking part in a game jam after so long.

I just want to thank everyone who spent time playing my game, whether you viewed it as a good or bad submission. I've still got a lot to learn, which is why I want to keep doing jams on a regular basis. With this being my second one I'm starting to realize how much motivation something like Ludum Dare gives you to finish a project, and even after you've finished your submission, you get some incredible feedback to help improve both yourself as a developer and your game as a whole.

In light of this I wanted to take a bit of a look back two years ago to reflect on some personal progress of mine and see if someone can get some good inspiration from this.

My first Ludum Dare was under an account called NerdyTea. Back then I was a bit younger and a lot less experienced when it came to game development as a whole. I decided to join Ludum Dare to test myself.

10a2f.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/holding-aces-the-card-game-shoot-em-up

My game was a very simple platformer with a shooting mechanic that didn't really feel fun or that it made a significant difference. It honestly put me off of developing for a while after it was finished, seeing how the game had turned out and seeing how low the ratings were. I really shouldn't have let it get to me so much, but it did. At that point I hadn't made any sort of progress on creating games and that's a deep regret of mine.

2020 has been hard on everyone, myself included. I ended up getting a significant cut on my hours at work, but that ended up being a blessing in disguise. I started dabbling with Unity tutorials again. Then I delved deeper and got some Udemy courses off of Humble Bundle and learned more from there, focusing a lot more on C# than when I studied before.

Ultimately, it led to me joining Ludum Dare again a second time, a little more experienced than before. And it led to a result I never thought I could achieve before, even with the flaws my game has.

36596 (1).png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/co-routine

No matter what rating my submission gets this time around, I can say confidently just playing through this and comparing it to what I managed last time I've improved so much and that I'll be able to improve again.

What I'm trying to say is if you aren't satisfied with your result after the ratings get revealed, don't get discouraged. Pick yourself back up, and get back to work. I hate that I didn't take this advice two years ago because I know I could have done even better this jam if I did. But even so, I'll be sure to work harder than ever, knowing that I have the ability to keep building on top of my skillset and make things that people will be able to enjoy.

See you all in LD48! And thanks for being an incredible community. :tea: :green_heart:

All good things must come to an end

Play+rate is almost over, so I want to say it's been a blast. Thank you all you wonderful beautiful people for participating this LD.

I'll leave you with with a few pictures of the progress I made on the post LD version I'll hopefully finish sometime soon.

Whales And Games favourite whale-of-a-time games!

Favorite Ludum Dare 47 Games

Hey there! Ludum Dare ratings have just closed! For everyone that was still rating games out-there and trying to save some last games from the danger zone, you did an amazing job and we're extremely glad you've took it upon yourselves!

Since the time is almost up, we wanted to highlight some of our favourite games and developers that we’ve found around here this past month! :trophy: While we haven’t rated as many games as some of our previous participations, we still found a fantastic set of gems!

Without further ado, here’s our favourite games for Ludum Dare 47 that are sure to make you a fantastic whale-of-a-time! :whale:

Dude Ranch :horse:

Dude Ranch

Let’s start off with the most hilarious-one! Dude Ranch by @coleslaughter, @ruddgasm and @ruddiculous is a funtastic time!

Wrangle some dudes at Dude Ranch, keep an eye out for buff and golden dudes, and score that money! Undertones aside from all of that, it’s all fun and challenging! Depending on how much you try to aim for that highscore, your carpal tunnel is sure to love it! :moneybag:

Satelloop :milky_way:

Satelloop

Another fun and challenging pick is Satelloop by @diptoman and @pranjalbisht, featuring very-clean visuals and a fantastic background track!

Power your satelloop by mining resources from asteroids, but destroy them before they hit your ship and damage it! It’s a constant gambit between which asteroids to mine and which ones to destroy, especially when you have to manage your power to produce more drones! :stars:

Roller Richers :roller_coaster:

Roller Richers

If we had to pick a favourite clicker for the jam, the award would go to Roller Riches by @jacobingalls and @dxk2294!

In this short tycoon-themed incremental game, you add parts of a roller coaster to make it longer and with even more loops! And the good thing about the loops is that all of the riders money will fall right off their wallets! And you get to keep all that money! As you keep going, you can also buy incremental upgrades that boost just how much money you make from your ride! :moneybag:

Beat Bash :crossed_swords:

Beat Bash

Beat Bash by @overlook-studios is a fantastic mash-up of both combat and rhythm where you place runes that play out to the game’s music beat!

Pick between melee and magic runes to damage the opposing enemy, all in while you also defend against theirs with your own defensive runes! You can also purchase extra runes at the end of each stage, giving you healing and stunning runes too! Our favourite detail is that everything in the background also moves according to the beat! :musical_note:

Gene Cycle :microscope:

Gene Cycle

A genuinely surprising game was Gene Cycle by @joh, proving to be a nucleotide connecting madness!

While the tutorial makes it seem complicated at first, there’s a really fun connection-setting puzzler here that had me playing it in the background during meetings! You break and make connections to create loops that eventually lead the sequence of nucleotides that you’re asked to assemble. I can also boost the fact I got the highscore for that game for how much I liked it! :sparkles:

Smells Like Chlorine :office:

Smells Like Chlorine

Smells Like Chlorine by @bas-hoogeboom and @thegreenworm is a short but strong narrative adventure that will throw you for a cleaning-loop!

It starts off like a normal day doing your job as a janitor, but things quickly take an interesting turn. Reality quickly begins to crook until madness is all-but-inevitable. It has a fantastically well-written scenario, and for a team fond of experiences like Stanley Parable, we really commend this one!

Time Loop :bat:

Time Loop

While simple, Time Loop by @bbqgiraffe and @kassjak quickly gets very frenetic!

Loop around the interior of a clock, as you flip-gravity to jump between sides! Avoid loose gears that will damage you while you fend-off against pesky clock bats! Grabbing the bolts that the bats drop will not only heal you, but also grant you points for that sweet highscore! :clock2:

Never Gonna Lose Again :crystal_ball:

Never Gonna Lose Again

And finally, last but not least, we recommend embarking on an epic quest through Never Gonna Lose Again by @garywiss, @arista, @dragongaze13 and @harusame!

Take a mage across impressive looking lands onto a journey to defeat a mighty monster! However, the lands are dangerous and the enemies are vicious! If you're slain, rather than just dying, you'll go back in time! This gives you new opportunities to learn from your mistakes, and try again! In our opinion, it's one of the most impactful games of the entire jam! :knife:

Thank you for this Ludum Dare!

Fancy Trash

In addition to all of the previous games, we’d also like to make some honourable mentions to Spinnerets by @jeremy-ryan; Fancy Trash by @sebastianscaini, @del-nordlund, @robert-mh and @donovan; Monkeys On Fire by @lapersila and @argon; and NEONWISE’89 by @merwaaan and @fmdkdd! All of these are also a great time overall!

Woofice Chair

Thank you for the fantastic time we had this Ludum Dare and for also rating Woofice Chair! It’s great to be back as a team to the event and it was great to finally make another 72-hour game. We’ve spent the last year trying out different commercial projects and we think we finally found our calling! :sparkles:

While we still don’t know if we can participate in April’s Ludum Dare because of some of our team’s other plans, we certainly would love to! Meanwhile, you can look forward to a development insight about our game’s juice and polish in the next hours, as well as our typical post-mortem sometime after the results are out!

DiscordBanner2020.png

Meanwhile, we’re preparing for Whaloween over at our Discord and our Twitter! It’d be fantastic to keep in touch after the jam is over, so you’re more than welcome to join, share your game and talk about your favourites there too! Cheers! :whale:

That's A Wrap!

...And that's the end of the really long rating period! Stay tuned for the results in less than four hours!

INSIDE THE LOOP - Ludum Dare47 was such a cool experience ! What's coming next ?

Is there a place where people do their list of games they liked ?

INSIDE THE LOOP Made by @SatolasGames and @aerloth

Another LD officially over

My sympathies to all the games that didn't get enough ratings, especially to those that had rated well over 20 other games themselves.

For future reference, I usually won't bother rating a game if they have more ratings on their game than they have provided to other games, regardless of whether they are in danger or otherwise.

It also greatly improves the odds of being played if it runs in the browser.

Congrats to everyone who did make it to be rated, be happy that you did.

Ouroboros - Post Jam Update 1

38f7c.png

Now that voting has ended for Ludum Dare we can release our Post-jam update.

  • Fixed various small memory leaks

HEY THERE

2020-10-27-174425em2560x1440/emscrot.png

Hey everyone!!! While we wait for the results I just wanna give a huuuuuuuuuge thanks to the whole community (and especially those who took the time to play SORO BORO). All the feedback I got was overwhelmingly helpful and means a ton to me; I learned so much from this jam and feel like I owe a lot to the community going forward.

Also just wanna say wow, awesome work to everyone who finished a game for ld47. I'm blown away of the quality of so many of the games I played throughout the jam, it has really inspired me to keep improving my own skills as a developer.

I hope you're all feeling mighty proud of yourselves, this was my first ludum dare but definitely not my last. Amazing experience.

Seeya next time :3

Ouch

Those results are disappointing. I thought I did better...

Minimum ratings given?

So, I have 22.5 "Ratings Given" and I think the minimum is 20. I have 35.8571 "ratings received" and next to "ratings received", there is a "Check" thing, which used to say "This will be rated", but next to "Ratings Given" there isn't and I didn't get the results either... metrics.PNG Does anyone know if is only is the server "lagging" and if I should have been rated? Edit: nope. Just the servers being laggy.

That's unbelievable!

Game results for this Ludum Dare are all absolutely mesmerizing.

Congratulations to winners - you totally deserve that recognition!

happy-dog-maru-shiba-inu-24.jpg

And our MonkeyVM even got 33rd overall and 25th in theme (across all jam entries), and one of the top puzzle games! I can't describe how I feel about it, makes me so happy.

Thank you all, especially @pov for organizing this jam!

How?!

How did I rank highest in audio when there is no audio in my game?

11th in Innovation?!?!??

And 75th overall? 😲

Holy crap, I'm really glad I tried playing around with a somewhat experimental idea :) Huge thanks to everyone who played my game! This really feels like good encouragement to keep exploring the idea-

Thanks so much to everyone who played and rated my game, and the few people who supported my twitch stream.

I'm over the moon!

Congratulations everyone!!

I got 251st place overall, which I'm pretty happy with since this was my first ldjam!

But what really matters is that we all were able to make a game in such a short amount of time, it's amazing!

Congratulations to the winners and to everyone else!!

Congratulations!

Congratulations everyone! This was our first game Jam and we were really happy to participate, actually finish something and get ranked! For me it was a total shakedown of a 2 month old engine that I was crazy enough to try for the Jam! We'll be back!

HOLY SH-

I can’t even describe how happy i am now, oh my god... Thanks to everyone!

Ludum Dare 48: Coming April 2021

We finally made it. Ludum Dare 48. This will be our 48th 48-hour event. I should make a weird teaser trailer with a TAC-2 joystick or something.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1JtEJbu5a8

Yeah, like that.

For those of you that like to schedule things half-years in advance, tentatively Ludum Dare 48 will be on April 16-19th weekend. Unfortunately I'm waiting to confirm a few things first, and they didn't quite come together in time, so I'm calling the date tentative for now. If that date doesn't work out, it will be the following weekend (23rd-26th).

Stay tuned!

Thank you so much for maintaining LD all these years! Finally submitting to LD nearly half a decade after watching participants online was a heck of a ride, from an unfinished attempt last semester to every week of on-and-off practice... all leading up to today. I wish I'd done certain things a little better with my game-- okay, a lot of things, really-- but nonetheless it was a joy to become part of this community and start networking with fellow developers. You can count on me being around for April as long as the Sun hasn't exploded yet.

I want the next theme to be about that specific controller.

@supergamersgames you mean you want the theme to be "two buttons, one analog stick" or something like that? That would be really fun, it's almost like the limited controls of a NES controller. That had a D-pad though, and start/select.

@peace-of-cake-games Well, maybe make it an added bonus?

LDJam user 217144

@supergamersgames it would be fun to make a game with just two buttons and an analog stick! I expect there would be a lot of NES-style games.

Thank you whoever played Cereal Killer and found it entertaining :) Yahoo.png

Woah.

I don't know what even to say. 37th overall and 18th in humor is WAY more than I ever expected for this Jam. This was my first LDGJ that I was actually able to submit to and I was only aiming for top 500 at most. Thanks so much for anyone who rated my game during the jam!

What?

Seriously, who rated me terrible in Theme? I didn't even hit 3.5 despite being one of the developers with a game most dedicated to the theme.

POKKO results

This is the best results I get in a Ludum Dare game that I worked on. I'm proud of my teammates, they did a great job especially on visuals.

LD47 Results

This is amazing, my best Ludum Dare results so far. I'm glad you enjoyed my game!

I have been contemplating whether I want to make a post jam version with better AI and higher difficulty, now I'm probably going to do it :)

Got an okay rank...

But I'm definitely happy with my game Tempus Locus! Thanks for the all the feedback folks, and see you in the next LD!!!

FROGS_ThanksForPlaying.png

These are the results for my entry "FROGS Training to be Heros (In a large 'wheel-thing')".

I had a really great time creating this game! I am glad it did 'pretty good' in the ratings. Someday I hope to tell the larger story of these frogs, and their world... But, it will probably be a long time, if it ever truly happens.

Anyway... thank you for playing!!

The best NES game on LD47 - now with some post jam fixes

ouroboros-6.png

"Best" because it's the only one, haha. Still, it almost reached 100th in Theme:

ld.png

I've released a post jam version at https://wendelscardua.itch.io/ouroboros following some feedback I got during the event.

Changes: * Using more "evil" colors on all enemies, to make clearer that all of them must be avoided * Background shaking + SFX during collisions * Music (and unfortunately SFX as well) changing more smoothly depending on remaining time

My TL;DR Post Mortem for the jam

Results

Did not expect at all to go well on Theme category, nor Humor as a close second!

Was shooting for above 500th Overall this time, got very close! All other categories got above that (except Graphics and Mood, understandably).

Game itself

Finally found a scope I'm happy with: Easily made mechanics with tons of content! Full but short story, game with an ending.

Extremely proud of final game and player feedback! I got the exact reaction I was hoping to achieve.

Burned myself out on day 2 for not using day 1 for all I could. Tried really hard to make it to Compo but fell short by a single minute.

Loved making music! Had never done it for a jam before, but it's a nice change of pace, and makes my game more unique.

Post jam

Most likely nothing (as per usual)

If anything: Extra inventory slot, playable tutorial (both player suggestions) and Portuguese translation.

Next jam

Anyway I'll probably keep doing this jam every time, until the day I die.

Next time, expect a game with same scope, if not better. Maybe I'll bring in an artist? Who knows.

Also next time I'm trying for the compo again! Maybe actually doing it too!

Big thanks to everyone who played my game and helped me out during this jam, and congrats to all who participated!!

I gave it an honest try. :)

Thank you to everyone that played 'proceed' and gave me your thoughts on the game! It's been a wild ride.

I was also shocked to find that I scored 37th in Mood! The Manager would like to personally thank you all for appreciating its spooky demeanor.

wow.png

As for every other category... eh, let's just say I learned a lot. I made a good number of mistakes along the way. :joy:

It's been a blast jamming with the LD community, and I look forward to seeing you all in mid-April for another go-- one that hopefully involves less cancelled projects and torn hairs.

I also want to congratulate @drunkardwolf for a MUCH deserved 35th place Overall and 4th in Mood, not to mention some rather impressive Theme/Graphics/Audio scores to boot. I absolutely loved your game entry. You TOTALLY earned it... I ain't even mad! :joy:

In the meantime, while slightly behind schedule, I still fully intend on the Manager's return in 'precedent' (working title)-- a fully fledged prototype starring a new character in the cryptic Subreal Realm.

Since I'm a big fan of both creepy audio AND teasing things that aren't even nearly close to being ready, here's a little sneak peak of the upcoming Dread Fence zone and the latest n' greatest in creepy failure noises...

Okay okay okay, NOW I'm done. See you next year!

A Good Ludum Dare Year!!!

I have a confession to make; I really wanted to get 1st Overall again LOL

I got pretty close though :smirk: which is cool :sunglasses:

Thanks to everyone who played and gave me the ratings for these achievements!

Congrats to the winners, and everyone with cool new games!

LDScore.PNG

Overall, I'm satisfied with my results. I was able to up my overall average by half a star. I have a lot to learn and a lot of work ahead of me, but I'm so happy I was able to improve.

Scores...

So here are my scores. Shockingly similar to the scores on my last game, although I really feel like this game is by far my best ever Ludum Dare entry...

I am interested in what people consider to be a "3.5" game versus a "4" game. I personally think 3.5 is "approaching good", while 4 is "this is a good game in its current state."

So at this point I'm not really sure what I could meaningfully do to improve. LD47Scores.PNG

That said, 3.6 in fun is pretty good. And many of my scores are at least a little better than my last game. So I'm not toooo sad but I was hoping to get a 4. Although, I guess a 4 is really a very high score? So maybe I should be pretty happy with what I got.

Brothers, This is a True Tragedy

Stuck in a loop :(

Hey everyone!(I let everything on my mind spill out and this post is probably gonna be a bit of downer :( )

First I want to say thanks to everyone who played and rated my game, especially last few ratings that made it past the 20 needed ratings. I was gonna make an small update for the game improving some of the rough edges of the game and maybe make a post inviting people to try it out, but I didn't and still received the last few missing ratings, and I appreciate it a lot. I appreciate the people who look out for games falling behind on ratings and just people who played and rated my game in general.

Now the results speak for themselves, my game didn't receive good ratings and they are fairly average, and that's because my game IS average, and I don't feel bad about my ratings, I'm happy people rated it honestly and I would have done the same, but I feel like I could have done a lot better.

While I did miss the first day of the jam due to technical issues and was one day short compared to the other people, I still could have smoothed some of the rougher corners in post. And while I did make one patch, I didn't make the 2nd patch that I already had list of issues that I wanted to fix.

And while I might have been busy some of the earlier days, I was free the last 4-5 days of the rating period. But I just couldn't do it :( I just couldn't sit down and start working... I would say I understand programming pretty well and I like to challenge my self by making complex things(or at least what I think are complex). So it wasn't the issue about not knowing how to fix things, so I have fairly smart head on my shoulder, I had plenty of time... I have food and water, and I have a roof over my head - warm little apartment, I live alone so no one was there to disturb my work, all the comforts person might need... so I had no obstacles and yet.. I just couldn't get my self to make a little patch for my game. Sure it would have probably taken me like 12 hours or so, but I like programming and I like making games... So I really don't know why I am struggling :(

And lately I have noticed that this is reoccurring theme, after I moved out to live in this apartment all by my self, I realized that I am struggling a lot with doing even basic stuff, not because I don't know how to do it but just because I cant do it. And I am also struggling with finding fulfilling job or any job for that matter and even more so struggle staying in the job.. I'm struggling making ends meet, and while I am minimalist and it helps bring the costs down quite considerably, and I have help of my family. I usually work on some odd projects and what not and make some money, but I don't know how sustainable this is. I feel like I'm stuck in a loop and I'm spiraling down towards darkness and void :(

I have a good head on my shoulders(I think..) and can come up with ways to make money but when it comes to actually doing it I just cant do anything

And while I just realized this last few years, when I think back to it, I realize that I've struggled most of my life with doing things and that I have very low motivation to do anything, back then I thought I was just lazy, but now I realize that this problem might be bigger... and the name of the theme this ludum dare couldn't be more fitting to my situation... Its as if its there to taunt me.

I have good health, all the basic human comforts one might need, but yet I am struggling fighting this invisible enemy and I don't think I am doing a good job at it :(

Anyway, a cry later, I don't know why I am writing this here, I usually try to keep this to my self, maybe it was cry for help or maybe some sort of catharsis..

Anyway I hope you are doing better than me and I hope, whoever or wherever you are, that you can achieve your dreams

HEY WINNERS! (repost)

Rating Response & Status Update

Not one of my better Ludum Dare scores at the end of the day, though it's more or less within averages for my entries (2-4 avg across all scores, usually with one score that game excels in - like Innovation for Senbir, or Humour for Hugely Unpopular President Simulator, which was incidentally the closest I came to the big 100 hall-of-fame in all of my years Daring to Ludum...Dare) - about 1500th average across all scores, with its best being Mood (1085) and Innovation (1371).

I believe this speaks to the fact that a lot more people are making games for Ludum Dare, and they're making better games. I'm content to yeet something out the door and work on it after the fact to make something good out of the prototype, and y'all are just out there kicking arse and putting out amazing & polished games in the span of a weekend. Rock on, jammers.

That being said, I also notice an odd disparity in ratings - for the most part every review left has been quite positive (especially w/rt to the mood, which brings me such joy to see - if other people are rejoicing at the spacey mood much the same as I am whenever I work on it, then this game was a success), and yet those comments only represent about half (12 comments vs. 22 reviews) of the total ratings I got. This maybe isn't surprising - it never feels good to rip someone else's game apart, especially when you know they went through all the same trials and tribulations of game jam development you did, and I would hazard a guess the lowest ratings are probably among those who didn't post a comment, either because it feels bad, or maybe because they just were too busy to write up constructive criticism & it fell off the schedule, as tends to happen in the hectic aftermath of a game jam.

2020-10-24_22.15.18.png

As for how things are going post-LD47, I got saving/loading implemented a few weeks ago, and of late, I've been starting to slog away at the difficult task of adding spaceships to the game - it's a whole new set of nightmarish difficulties and hacks being required.

  • Ships need to have the same seamless transition from ground to space/vice versa as players, as well as support for being anywhere in the system at any velocity.
  • They need to be simulatable server-side to let ships continue to work without a player behind the metaphorical wheel or when their pilot is logged out outright.
  • This means they need to work independent of the Unity physics system, as well as the active-visible frame of reference, to allow for ships to maintain consistent and accurate positions/velocities no matter how far out from the 0,0,0 point they are, and to ensure they can de-orbit/crash-land and whatnot consistently, even when the host is on another planet or flying through deep space.
  • They also need to have a pretty decent physics simulation in place that would allow for stuff like using offset RCS thrusters to turn the ship, maneuver it around, etc, as well as for how their handling will change as they burn up their fuel supplies and the likes.
  • All of this needs to work alone or with friends, and players need to be able to pilot ships seamlessly, and preferably with easy support for co-op flying if you add additional seats to it (e.g, one player is controlling main thrust and pitch/yaw/roll, another has maneuvering thrusters galore - this is really an engine feature for later use in another project where advanced co-op piloting would be beneficial for more than just the cool factor) spaceship.png

Thus far, the core physics stuff is semi-working. Translation to/from planetary surfaces is still pretty borked (velocity does not transfer correctly and you tend to get chucked off into deep space one way or another), and it does not work well when the active frame of reference for display is a rotated planet (though the issue may just be visual by the looks of things - which is fine, seeings as how you won't be seeing/flying a ship in deep space while on a planet :P), plus there's no interaction with player characters of yet. Progress is slow-going, in no small part thanks to motivational issues and the general mind-boggling complication of the task being made worse by odd and arbitrary bugs I'm having no luck with fixing.

2020-10-24_22.03.28.png

Such is the life of game development. Keep on keepin' on, jammers, and stay safe out there.

Results are in and wow, 74th overall!

Thanks everyone for playing and rating the game! I'm completely shocked how well it did! :)

What's the competition doing?

Screenshot 2020-10-28 at 02.24.10.png

We wanted to see how other people did in the jam, so we wrote this little website. You can look up certain places by category.

This way you can find games that have a similar rating to yours for example :)

http://karugamo.agency/ldjam-analysis/

Fuck the ratings

Know what? We don't make games for numbers, we make games for people. And no matter how bad your ratings are, some people out there enjoyed your game and thats all you should care about.

I think ratings are like the grades in school, it doesn't tell you how good you are, it just gives you a reason to learn and here it's a reason to play other games. Who would sit down and play games after the jam is over, if there wasn't a rating system?

So if you think your game is awesome and you think about making it a commercial game but the ratings are just average - go for it. Chances are your game is awesome. And you shouldn't obey some numbers, you should only obey you.

PS: not talking about my own ratings here, they are fine, just don't waste your ideas because of some numbers - there are lots of brilliant games out there, if you didn't make it to the top 100, thats no reason to throw a good concept away.

Thank you

I found it to be a very fulfilling experience and was pleasantly surprised with my score even if I got nowhere close to winning. I can't say I took the event completely seriously but it definitely motivated me to try exploring game development more as a creative outlet.

To tell you the truth, this ludum dare happened on a not so good time in my real life and at one point I considered dropping the development, some things were ultimately not implemented, but the positive feedback kept me going and I am glad I pushed through. I am happy I was able to deliver a rat game you've all wanted and grateful to have met other rat appreciators.

I will be looking forward to participating next time and I will make my own itchio page for the next entry as well as for my other project.

Thank you.newgrounds.png

This was fun

I didn't win (obviously) but I don't care, I had fun

Do We Really Need Another?

Another random developer expressing his views on ratings.

I've read multiple people's thoughts on post-jam, and now another developer is crowding the blog. Me.

We all know that for a lot of people, it doesn't end when Ludum Dare ends. Personally, I think embracing the negative comments seems a little too negative, and completely ignoring the negative feedback is too positive. My advice: it's your game! It's always important to know how people who have never played your game did, and figure out how to make your game more player-friendly from that, but when it comes down to things like graphics and audio: go with my motto, "to each his or her own"! You put hard work into making your game your game your own! If you're content with the quality of things like graphics and audio, no one can stop you! You are yourself!

...And a quick reminder, I'll be giving some artwork to the winning games! Stay tuned!

Feedback

Anyone want me to make a humorous post-mortem of my game? There'll be plenty of tips and awful art!

Ratings feel...... Terrible

The title says it all, As i'm not a programmer, but a sound designer, i'll only comment the Audio category. It's really disappointing that the ''winning game'' all have only between 20-30 ratings. 20-30 ratings don't necessarly means bad soundtrack or sound effects, but i heard better in other game who have more ratings,(not talking about my game here)

To me it just makes it obvious that, the more ratings you have, The less chance you have to get at the top because you are way more subject to super picky critics. If you do the math, you'll understand why.

I think it's kind of a problem if you want to make it a contest with position. My game was one of the most rated game (350 ratings), which is a lot and i got 78 th position on audio which is not bad, but still, it feels bad to see people who just took premade audio assets or people who have just 20 ratings or barely rated any games going up on the ranking.

Also, some of the games that have higher position don't even have an Original soundtrack made during the jam, which feels even worse.

How do people note audio? SFX quality, how good it's programmed in the game? Made during the jam? my guess is that most people used pre-made SFX... not super clear. On the music side, do you need an original soundtrack?

IMO people who don't make their own SFX and music from scratch should opt out of the category cause they have no credit for the assets, or either make 2 category SFX and Music. It doesn't mean a game should have no SFX or music but it's not your asset, plz opt out.

I think the organisation should think about how the ranking works and add more criteria on how game should end up in the top 100 at least.

Peace, :)

My First Ludum Dare

I just want to say a couple of things. First I enjoyed from making a game for the Ludum Dare 47 COMPO. Second, I was really disappointed from the fact that some people write in the comments how they LOVED the game just to get a good rating back and behind the scenes they rate bad. I was on the top 10 of getting feedback on a game and I got a lot of ratings for a COMPO game but still the fact you get a lot of ratings sometimes looks like a bad thing. I think I will participate in the next Ludum Dare also but if you did one of the things above then please write your honest comment and don't lie because after all it is a friendly competition.

My Recommendation for the next Ludum Dare

Hi! I am sorry for the clear as a whistle things I am about to say.

Ratings - It sounds like a joke that 20 ratings can win the Ludum Dare so easily because if you have 10 friends that participating then a half of your ratings will be 5. So, in my opinion, the minimum number of rating for participating should be 50 or the fact that you have a lot of ratings should help you in some way.

Comments - People write in the comments "Great Game!" and then behind the scene they rate you badly. I don't like this kind of behaviour because the fact that you rated me bad does not mean that I will rate you bad. But still, if you rate bad then you must have a reason. In my opinion, a rating without a comment should not be worth something. And the ratings that each one gave to you should be seen only for the game creator. If you can have other ideas of how the comments will fit the rating you got then it's good also but YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT SOMETHING.

Ways to improve -

  • If someone rated some other game bad/good without giving any good explanation and comment the rating should not be counted.

  • Minimum number of ratings is 50.

  • You should rate at least 50 other people.

  • People who caught as a 5 rating giver automatically to their friends should be suspended.

  • Your own current rating(not number of ratings, the real rating) should be seen to the game creator(not publicly).

  • Fix the but of the website that disconnects you from your account while you use it.

This is my recommendations from what I have seen in the tournament. I really enjoyed participating in it but still, there are a lot of things to improve in my opinion. If one of the Ludum Dare managers see this note I think he should read it.
