FULL POST-JAM RELEASE OF TIMESAVER

Hey guys, check it out with this link https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/time-saver

And thank you for your feedbacks, this LD was full of interesting and exciting experience for us, we taught many things from this

Circleline Postmortem

38d16.png

My game Circleline got 6th overall in the compo! Thanks to everyone who played it and rated. I've found writing postmortems to be useful in the past — I guess they exist for a reason! — so I figured I'd do another. Check it out here.

Post-Mortem Video

https://youtu.be/mrcGIE0kVlY

Here is a link to the post-mortem for my entry, An Hour Long Minute. I mostly just ramble about Mechanics and what was ultimately not meant to be. I didn't realize it until the very end, but the compression that OBS was doing made the gameplay sections very rough looking, but if you think of that being how the game actually looks then it looks kind of cool.

Thank you to everyone for taking part in this jam, this was a good first time and I'm looking forward to doing this again next April.

I am making my games OPEN SOURCE!

This includes my LD47 jam game which won 5th place on the jam category :) hope this helps the community a bit! https://youtu.be/wEhngf4SvMc

Finally got around to editing my devlog

My youtube channel isn't typically a gamedev channel, but I thought I'd use it as a platform to put my experience of my first game jam. It not being my usual type of content, I'm not really sure if there's a difference with these things, but I think it's more of a devlog than a postmortem.

I learned a lot while participating in the compo, had great fun, and did about as well as I expected. All in all, very happy, and will definitely be returning for the next one!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJsGaMMZ-kQ

Coming Up...

I've had a lot of work getting in the way of my tasks, but I can promise I've got some fun stuff coming up! I'll be giving out artwork to some of the winners and whoever else is lucky, and I'll be releasing my post-jam "Game Spotlight" post!

Is it just me?

Am I the only one that still checks this site 5 times a day knowing I would not get any notifications but I'm used to doing it during the jam?

We're keeping the servers up !

Thank YOU the players !

Thanks everyone for the incredible comments on our ludum dare entry Start The Game. We're really happy that the game pleases you ! As it has a low upkeep cost, we're keeping the game servers online, so you'll still be able to play it. Thanks again to the wonderful community of this ludum dare.

You can play the game here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/start-the-game-together

Small update to our game "Passerby"

This was our Ludum Dare 47th entry and I just did a small update to fix the hitboxes which was the biggest complaint and I also added coyote time! This was our best performing entry we have made and are happy how it turned out! https://heyllopotato.itch.io/passerby

Also I made my first post-mortem which was a post-mortem of this game - Also reason there isn't a lot of footage of making it is because i kept forgetting to record https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8MP0XPSzOY

Game Spotlight!

It's time for the Post-Jam Game Spotlight, where I recommend a game or two that could have won! Just because the jam is over doesn't mean we shouldn't come on over to ldjam.com and play some games!

(Second try for this actually, there's no dialog asking if you want to exit the page when typing a post. That's something that could be added to the site. I typed this whole thing and then my touchpad glitched. This'll probably be shorter than the first attempt.)

This Jam's Spotlights Are...

...two games that really hit hard in the "emotional story" category I just made up. The special guests are Anything For You and WHAT I SAW!

Let's go into detail!

Anything For You is a point-and-click narrative that'll leave you like "that was a game?" when you finish! An emotional story, realistic dialogue, and some funny art during the bedtime story scene! Plus the rare added touch of voice acting to really get you into the story!

WHAT I SAW is an epic mashup of platformers and narratives with little elements of horror! Journey deep into who you are, and don't give into trying to change yourself to satisfy others! Responsive and smart controls, an emotional story, and some great enemy AI go nicely with the unexpected twist near the end and the fantastic soundtrack.

If you haven't played these, you are REALLY missing out!

Well, that's all I've got for now! Stay tuned for my artwork awards for the winners and whoever requested an artwork!

(Note: well, I thought this would be shorter than the original attempt at this, but turns out it's longer. Probably because I had fun with the formatting.)

I hope to see everyone next jam! Happy gamedev-ing everyone!

Please Help!

I am new here, and I really wants to participate in the next ludum dare but i don't know how I will get the update of next theme and how I will upload it on this site....

Looking forward for friends to work with me on the next ludum dare :)

First Update For My Game

Check it! https://lisichkafarengeit.itch.io/project-loop Screen 2.jpg

My first VR game is going to Early Access on November 13th.

I just want to announce that my first VR Game is now going on Early Access now on Steam. You can wishlist it now. It is a Brick Breaker Game where you are inside the Ship. I had the inspiration from the Boxshot of the Gameboy Game "Alleyway" where i thought "wouldn't it be cool to be inside the ship?".

The EA Version has some levels and 3 powerups (more are planned).

It is already available on Google Play : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MauroRilla.HamsterLoop

For windows release you find it on https://misterm.itch.io/hamsterloop

Soon will be available also on Amazon App Store.

Semiautomatic

Those of you who played the smash hit Star Crossed (1,548th overall) may remember the short story introducing the game. Instead of developing the game we chose to develop the story. It's now an 18-page children's book inspired by Plato's dialogue Meno:

Thanks go to Dr. Chung (@genie) for the artwork. See it here:

Comments and suggestions welcome.

New Artwork and a Complete Rewrite...ish | A Post LDJAM 47 Game Update

My effort continues on Out the Door with some new artwork, a rewrite (of sorts) to fix the build process, which has led to something of a self-driven code review.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/LLXO-6Pretk

TL;DR;

  • Using the extra time, post-jam to continue to fix up and practice my developer art. Not sure if it'll be the final thing, but practice is the only way I'm going to get better.
  • My web deployment was broken during the jam which had something to do with my project and GitHub Actions. I ended up starting a new project from scratch and porting over code (while rewriting a lot of it) through a sort of self-driven code review process.
  • No new release just yet, as I want my first post-jam release to have something new to offer than the LDJAM submission...but it's coming along!

Quick Update

Spent a chunk of the day cleaning up the refactor and managed to port over the dialogue system from the LDJAM version and mark that chunk of work complete. :smile_cat:

2020-11-09_v03-complete.png

Did a short update video if you are interested in seeing the progress.

Now onto the scenario planning...

Artefaktum

Artefaktum is a solid puzzle game which I did after the 46th LudumDare using the first release. The theme was "Keep It Alive". You can download my project for free here. If you want, write a brief feedback. I wish you the best. See you later - probably for the 48th Ludum dare session in April 2021. Bye ++

Artefaktum02.png

UFO Airlines

In Ludum Dare 38 I made the game "Space Travel 15" (You can find it here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-travel-15). It was a game mostly inspired by Mini Metro, but with UFO's. The game was in no way perfect, but I liked the idea that much, that I decided to play around with the idea some more. So I have since then worked a bit on a game inspired by "Space Travel 15", "Mini Metro" and something like "Railroad Tycoon". I call the game "UFO Airlines".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ge60Nx7Vug

Sreen01.jpg

The idea for the game is to make something like "Mini Metro", but you have in this game much more control with how passengers are moved from airport to airport. The game is long from being finished, but if you like games like "Mini Metro" and "Railroad Tycoon", there is a lot of things you can play around with.

If your are interested in trying the game, you can find and try it here https://gamejolt.com/games/UFO_Airlines/474993

Alchem Game Engine

Hello everyone! Recently, I started programming a game engine called Alchem. It is an open-source 2D game engine written in java. It currently has a simple 2D opengl renderer, a python scripting api, a "physics engine", and a tilemap system. Here is a screenshot of a breakout game I made in it:

breakout.png

If this interests you, you can download the engine from github (https://github.com/Nikos1001/AlchemEngine) and join the Alchem discord server (https://discord.gg/YuRdxE684U)

Whew!

Well, after a whole lot of work, gamedev, and just plain ol' procrastination, I've finally made some sketches for everyone who requested one, and a sketch because I wanted to make one. Full collection below! (I'm probably missing some people, sorry if I forgot you. Let me know if I promised a sketch and I didn't make one, I'll make one ASAP.)

It all started when I responded to an artwork offer... and received this from @moski :

@moski's OTL Drawing.png

Who wouldn't be exited, inspired, and eternally thankful after getting something like that?

So, my inner artist went crazy and got inspired. Little did I know how hard it is to draw with a touchpad instead of a touchscreen or pencil.

But I persevered over the tyranny of awful results, and got decent results! Check it out!

I've finally learned how to tame my PC's touchpad! (I never said I tamed it, I only learned how.) Anyone else want a sketch?

(Next Ludum Dare I'll try to avoid drawing them digitally... digital drawing is not exactly my strong suit, I'll have to get a sketchpad and pencil for everyone's sketches in LD48)

[EDIT] Another sketch in the comments.

Our post-jam version is LIVE at last!

Feedback Fortnight 2020

What did you work you work on this year? Let's just exchange feedback!

ademv2/emsmall.jpg

While waiting for the next LD, you may be interested in joining Alakajam's Feedback Fortnight, to be held from November 22 to December 17.

This is an event where you can submit any game project, complete or not. When entering, you are then invited to review the other entries, as the goal is indeed to exchange feedback between participants. To make this more effective, we have a LD-like "karma" system in place so that the more feedback you give, the more visible your game is.

If this sounds useful to you, head over there to read more about the event and enter it!

NB. In case you're wondering why this is not an itch.io jam, Alakajam! is actually a sister community to Ludum Dare funded in 2017 by LD mods & veterans. We host week-end long jams three times a year, with some cool twists like gaming competitions held on a jam entries or special events like this one :)

Phil Alone - Just released the new version of the game!

So guys, let's go for the version update! I received a lot of feedback this past month and November after Ludum Dare, so I decided to work on Phil Alone a little more and maybe even expand it.... Well, that's it for now, let's go to the list of updates and bug fixes!

Text updates - Some texts were awkward in both version, English and Portuguese, so I decided to look for some changes.

Text Box update - The text box is a little more darker, so everyone can read it better now in both versions!

Content Warning - I put a little Content Warning in the game too and what it is.

Sound updates - Some sounds were too loud, so I decided to low their volume, like the phone sound.

Computer Update - Now you have to press Z or Enter to pass the Computer task list, so it's better for the player to read it all.

Bed Update - So, some players didn't saw that the bed have some little things to do, so I decided to remove one part of the text there.

Bug fixes - Fixed when the assets of the magazine and the painting were still appearing even if you decided to remove them or destroy them.

Guys, I hope you enjoy the new versions of the game and please leave a feedback for me to see it what you thought about the game!

If you wanna help me develop more of Phil Alone, please send me a donation by the itch.io website, I would be gladly accepting it.

And to finish this devlog... I am looking for translators, if you wanna be a part of this game, please send me a message and let's make it happen!

Goop Loop Released on Steam in Early Access!

ldemgooploop/empreview3.gif

Several people wanted to see an extended version of Goop Loop, so here it is! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1454550/Goop_Loop/

It features improved art, an extended level, more voice lines, etc., and will continue to have content added to it, as it's just early access right now. The premise is simple: You're a goop stuck in a loop. All you can do is jump and stick (with a bit of air acceleration). Physics does the rest. Can you make to top? Or will you flop and plop?

An extended LDJAM game to celebrate the Super Nintendo (SNES) 30th birthday!

Hi everyone!

As you may know, on November 21st the Super Nintendo (SNES) console turned 30!

To celebrate this, I made a new SNES game titled "The Last Super." This is actually an extended version of my LD46 entry: Keeping SNES Alive

The-Last-Super.jpg

You'll play as the last SNES cartridge on Earth. You'll have to move and jump around in each of the 20 levels of the game so every SNES can play you! But don't let a SNES without cartridge for too long...

TheLastSuper_title.gif

The game is freeware and can be played online or downloaded from here:

https://drludos.itch.io/the-last-super

It’s also available on cartridge to play on a real SNES, with my LD46 entry “Keeping SNES alive” as an added bonus:

https://catskullelectronics.com/collections/games/products/the-last-super

TheemLast/emSuper Cart.jpg

Last but not least, the game is open-source, with a lot of detailed comments in the code.

I hope it’ll motivate and help other developers to make new games for the SNES!

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

In A House - Post Jam Update

Hey guys,

My first game jam, my second published game ... and what a wonderful experience.

Since then I have been working on its update, and I wanted to share it here with you.

Hope you like it.

Super late submission

Hi everyone.

EHP snake wall.gif

I released a new puzzle game Everyday Housing Problem 2 days ago. It was supposed to be an entry for LD47, but I couldn't submit it by the deadline because it was a mess then. After working on it for 2 months, I thought finally I can show off what I wanted to make. If you are interested in puzzle games with unusual mechanics or well-thought-out levels, please check it out!

Please feel free to check it out, and maybe drop a review <3

Thank you all for making Ludum Dare so amazing!

Making TWITTER... for DWARVES! - LDJAM 47 Post-Mortem

Better late than never... I've finally got around to finish the edit of the devlog for my Ludum Dare 47 Compo entry Newster!

Trying to get that Youtube channel started has been taking a lot of dev time away. I enjoy editing these though, and they say to keep doing what you find fun, so here you go!

https://youtu.be/OGrVEIOr_NA

Would love to hear your thoughts on the format and any tips or advice would be grand!

Thanks again for making my first Ludum Dare a wonderful experience, I'll see you all at the next one!

Finally completed Ace of Rope post-jam version

So I made a western action game in which you can control the gallows' rope you're stuck in. Given the large feedback and good ratings, I spent the last two months adding stuff to turn it into a complete game.

After more than 8 years of game development, I've never managed to finish a game of this scope before, so it's very satisfying! The year 2020 has kind of been the Year of Finishing Games for me, and game jams helped a lot. So thank you, whether you host jams, review or even just play games!

You can play the game here.

Hoptok Turn-based Game Jam

V3nZpp.png

Hiya, we're currently running a turn-based Hoptok game jam (Itch.io) that ends next weekend!

Only tech requirement is the game has to be able to run in the browser (can be Unity WebGL, phaser, html + css, etc). Top 3 games win USD$50 :]

We only have 10 people registered at the moment, so if you submit something there is a good chance you'll win a prize :P

Playing the Actual Top 10 Games

Hello guys, about 2 months before I made my own top picks from the LD47. This is to make ammends and review the actual winners which I have not played before lol! thanks :) https://youtu.be/aOdKF_7AuOk

Fluffensnuff has grown up - My first game after 18 years

and changed its name to a more poetic communityemgroupimage/em444x208.png

A year after my wife and i made this sokoban-like puzzle game for Ludum Dare 44, we decided to make it our first release, as it was very well received and the scope seemed really doable. During this year, i gathered some statistics from the high score list - we had nearly 2000 players with a combined playtime of over 200 hours. This isn't much for a "proper" game, but for our little LD entry it was incredible and made us very happy.

What really feels strange to me is, that i've been making games for 18 years and have never released a paid game in that time. This one will be the first and i can only wonder what took me so long :D

We went from 17 levels to over 100 with many new mechanics. We also redesigned the graphics completely, over some different styles (this would deserve its own post).

Old

s2.png

New

s_42.png

We also included the level editor, with which i built all the levels. Players can build levels easily ingame, and publish them or just play the levels made by other people.

It was a really interesting experience, and also showed us how much work it can be, despite the 72hr game being quite solid (for our past selves, at least). Of course we learned a lot too, and i especially value the experience made with freelancers on fiverr for the future.

Today we published the steam page, very exciting times for us: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1409180/OfMiceand_Moggies/

PS: does anyone recognize this? (big fans!) :D titlescreen.png

Devlog for my post jam game!

Hi, it has been a long time I have come here. But, I have made a devlog of my post jam version of my LD game Looped. I am fixing all the problem with it and also making changes according to the feedback. Here is the devlog: https://leo-red.itch.io/looped/devlog/201564/looped-v12-in-the-making

(I didn't write the whole devlog here as it is very long for me and the changes are not massive ;) )

Did my indie game breakeven? 7 years & 6 platforms of sales data!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkkJty-fNY4

Hello Ludum Dare community!

I've just popped on today to share with you a new video I've put together detailing the sales numbers from my debut game Toast Time. Platform sales data include Steam, iOS, Android, Humble Bundle (if that counts) and Nintendo Switch! All that top-secret stuff that devs keep to themselves? I'm sharing it.

Happy to answer any questions you have, here or there. Whether that's regarding sales, marketing, pr beats, etc., or any details I might have missed, or even about my Discord "Coverage Bot" that I run too.

Bye bye for now! xx

Phil Alone: Game Updates and French Version

Hey everyone, it's been a while and we are in the end of 2020... I don't about you guys but this wasn't the best year for me, but I grew a lot as a Game Developer thanks to this year and as a present for everyone that is playing Phil Alone, I decided to upgrade the game a little more, let's see the new updates?!

Graphics updates - So, I decided to remove every image of the game that had a black background, because it was just too simple. I decided to add something different: All the black screens like the credits, the pc tasks and the days are like a old fashion screen of a PC. This was added in all the versions of the game. Here is a before and after for you guys to compare:

BEFORE PC tasks.png AFTER PC tasks new.png

New credits - The credits are now with the name of the person that translated the game and the language. New Title Screen - So, I decided to change the title screen to something more simple but more different and that connects with everything else. New Icon - Phil Alone has a new Icon when you open the game if you download a different version! French Version - Phil Alone is now translated to French thanks to Elhijei! Guys, I hope you enjoy the new versions of the game and please leave a feedback for me to see it what you thought about the game!

If you want to help me develop more of Phil Alone, please send me a donation by the itch.io website, I would be gladly accepting it: This money will be used to put Phil Alone on the Steam page, so my goal is only 100,00 $USD. Even if the game goes to Steam, it will be completely free for you guys to download it and play there, it's just a way to more people know about the game!

And to finish this devlog... I am looking for translators, if you want to be a part of this game, please send me a message and let's make it happen! (I think the next languages that Phil Alone will have translation are Malay and Spanish!)

Here is the link to the page: https://gabrieldevbr.itch.io/phil-alone

The Wait For Ludum Dare 48

(I made that title up on the spot and it's actually pretty catchy.)

All right, that guy who posts random things is back! This time I'm talking about waiting another few months for Ludum Dare 48, and how I'm getting ready.

Prepping For Gamedev

This Ludum Dare I was fully unprepared and had no idea how bad it is to not have enough time. Only working on stuff for a few hours over the three days results in a short game with barely any audio and a sloppy walking animation. (Seriously, I spent probably no more than 10 minutes drawing all of the player's animations.) This results example was oddly specific, I wonder if it could be referring to this Ludum Dare's game Outside The Loop. 😉

So, I want to do something a bit longer and better for LD48. (Not saying this past Ludum Dare's game was awful... but it sure wasn't the best of LD47.) This consists of trying out team gamedev, use of different softwares and techniques, and just overall making sure I remember to keep my schedule clear around Ludum Dare.

Getting Ready For The Gaming!

My "Following" list just keeps getting bigger and bigger... I would include a nice simple gif of me scrolling through my "Following" list, but the gif would be hours long. (😜 Not really... but it is a pretty long list of people who I want to see make games in LD48.)

Keeping The Community Entertained

Because it turns out that the LD gamedev community is still going strong months after a jam! So I've been posting a bit of random assorted posts, everything from almost useless posts to my completely normal posts such as Game Spotlight and Game Sketches. (The second one needs work... 😅. Don't worry everyone, next jam the sketches won't look so sloppy.) And of course, we can't forget this post! (Hard for me, since I'm typing this. And this. And this...)

And To Wrap It All Up...

...Dear reader, how do you get ready for Ludum Dares? Feel free to share your techniques in the comments!

iLoop game on Google Play Store

Hello, this is my first app created from the most recent Ludum Dare Jam :)

Kindly download and review my game, thanks :)! iLoop is a hyper-casual 2D endless runner game about a robot who has been sent on a special mission to collect food for the army warehouse!

Hi guys!

We are over 1000 subscribers, so I thought I should give back somehow :) Nothing better came up, so friends on Discord suggested a giveaway!

We revamped and re-released our LD47 game, Office Dating Simulator 2020!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QEZfO9pgTI

Hey there! We originally submitted Office Dating Simulator 2020 back in October for Ludum Dare 47, and were so surprised to recieve 4th place in 'Humor' and a top 100 score in 'Fun'. After submitting our initial version of the game and recieving so much nice feedback, we knew we wanted to spend a bit more time with it. There were some extra ideas we had in mind, and we really wanted to polish the game's veneer to the level of eye-blinding shine we knew it deserved. So without further ado, we've revamped and re-released Office Dating Sim with a ton of brand new additions!

To make a long story short, we've worked with a fantastic group of voice actors to bring full voice-acting to the game, animated all of the game's character portraits, added a bunch of new art and sound assets, and polished up the game a ton overall! This new version, dubbed "Gold Edition," is up on itch.io right now to download. We'd love it if you checked it out and let us know what you think - we're really happy with it overall. We've also posted full patch notes detailing everything that's gone into the new edition!

We hope you enjoy!

Crescendo - Rhythm and Stealth

It's been a long while since Ludum Dare 41, when I originally created Crescendo. Combining two incompatible genres, rhythm and stealth, resulted in the puzzling objective of navigating a facility with a sound-based security system. I've been improving it since, and finally have a cool trailer to show! If you haven't played since LD41 I implore you to try out the current demo!

Grab the demo at https://natelargo.itch.io/crescendo

Crescendo is still in development, and will be released on Steam and Itch.io!

The Journey Continues | December 2020 Out the Door Devlog

The process continues on my LD47 game remake/redux you're supposed to call it. Currently working towards making it playable with more content, but managed to get the guts of the game working in a way that I like and extensible. With the tech out of the way, I am going to focus on content, content, and then more content.

YouTube video below, but just in case you don't have the time...

TL;DR;..or watch

  • Been stuck on designing the "larger" game loop for the game, but managed to simplify and find something that feels true to the original design.
  • Removed web-based support and focusing on Windows/Linux support for the near future.
  • Added dynamic media displays that can be specified in ink script.

C# cool tools Article

Hi there! I made a C# article about useful cool tools that will make your program more efficient. You definitely should go and check it out!

https://giladbarilan1.medium.com/c-tricks-features-9940b5e7b4ed

Where is the line drawn?

The rules state:

You’re free to use any tools or libraries to create your game. You’re free to start with any base-code you may have.

You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that you OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game.

I saw this asset (NGSS 2) on the Unity Asset Store that adds softer shadows to one's game. Since the next jam is around the corner, it got me thinking...

If you use an asset like that one in your jam game, should that require an opt-out of graphics? The asset itself contains no artwork, but it does enhance the visual appearance of the game.

You could argue it's a library since it's just a bunch of code, but that doesn't seem quite right in my opinion since it's not really used like a library.

So here I'm asking, what's your opinion on this? Would you opt out of Graphics in such a case or say that it's just a library/base-code and thus separate from being considered 3rd party Artwork? Really curious as to what the general community thinks since I could see it going either way.

Another Ludum Dare game turned commercial project!

Hi jammers,

Me and my brother participated in 10 Ludum Dares (https://dietzribi.itch.io/), and we're working on a full version of our LDJAM41 entry, Toodee and Topdee!

The plan is to release this year, here's the Steam store page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1303950/ToodeeandTopdee/

And here's a trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EodWWKbK6Ng

We would very appriciate it if you check out the Steam demo, and add the game to your wishlist.

Every wishlist helps A LOT!

Wanna make a game in a team?

If you know how to code, use unity, make 2d games, make music, sound effects or whatever more and you would like to make a game in a team, then you can join mine. There's already 4 people and it would be cool if there were more.

Just join the discord and try contacting me.

Did you keep the progress of your games?

So guys, I don't know if you do this but...

I started Luke Inn in Ludum Dare 45, when the theme was: Start with nothing. Luke Inn is a story about a boy that lost everything in his life and his parents died, so he receives a letter to come back home and realize his parents last wish: Transform the old house of the family in a beautiful inn!

This was the first thing I did for the game, and I am proud to see how much it improved since the first time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfsji2EW4dk

Character Design

I made an attempt at 3d character design! Any thoughts on it? :)

Lessons learned from 10 Game Jams

all.png

Together with my wife i made 10 games during game jams, 9 of which were ludum dare (the other one being GMTK2020). This was so much fun and it helped us immensely! I wrote a little blog post that explains my most important, non-obvious learnings that i wanted to share with you.

These are the points, shortened 85% (check out the link to see it in full, with images). Short disclaimer: For the sake of brevity, i omit the "there are always exceptions"-part. There are, of course, and nothing is always A and never B.

Your game is too hard

You'll probably loose all grasp of how the game will feel like for a new player and thus will probably make it too difficult.

ROT (Rule of Thumb): Balance your game so you can just about win. Then half the difficulty.

Teach through play, not text

Very few people will read the explanations for your game given your game page on ldjam.com. Frontloaded ingame explanations will also be most likely skipped or forgotten immediately.

ROT: Ask yourself: Can players understand what to do, if they didn't read anything?

Be picky with who you work with

Involving more people than yourself always introduces an overhead. Sometimes this can mean you spend more time "managing" than you save through their contributions. Of course working with others can be much more fun than working alone, so it's not a pure cost-benefit calculation.

ROT: Give people a chance, don't ignore red flags, be aware of and manage the risk of them not "delivering".

Pragmatism is key

Boils down to: * Keep it simple: Is this the simplest way to do it, even if it is stupid? * Choosing the right things to work on: Is this really the most important thing for the game, right now, in this stage of development? * Consider alternatives: Could you do this completely different and save time and effort? Would it work to omit this thing completely?

Game Jam Preparation

Apart from the usual things, don't forget to setup your (skeleton) project beforehand. Push it into version control already, and make sure everyone on the team has access and understands the VCS. Make sure you can export your project as HTML, so people can play in the browser.

As i write there - what really interests me is this:

* What (non-obvious thing) did you learn during game jams?*

*What do you think other game makers should adhere to or think about, to make great games? *

Where do you disagree with me?

Please let me know! :D

I forgot the most important part of my game

I've been so occupied with improving my game architecture that I managed to forget the most important part of my game.

TL; DR;

The original plan was to get a playable demo out by the end of the month. I planned it all out, implemented a bunch of features, and squashed a bunch of bugs...but forgot the most important part: The gameplay.

The release I prepared for January is a really nice tech demo...but doesn't provide a reason to really play. It's a ego boost (which is fine) but not a good release to the players. What is most frustrating is that it's been four months since LD46 ended, and at this point I have less of a game than I did after the weekend.

Lessons learned this time around don't overthink it and everything needs gameplay. There is a time and place to focus on the tech, but that time isn't in the beginning of your project.

I have a plan to get back to the gameplay and develop an ACTUAL game, but it's going to take some time. Here's hoping that by the time you hear from me next time, I have something to show. :smiley_cat:

Cold Heart (From Ludum Dare 46) is coming to STEAM!

capsule_main.jpg

I'm very happy to make a continuation to this project! Since Ludum Dare 46 I've not stopped. And now, after launched at Google Play Store, I'm launching in Steam!!

Cold Heart is an action game whose objective is to protect the cold heart from fire creatures.

It is a difficult game to categorize as it is very different from any game.

It has: - RPG progression - Skills to evolve - Tower defense system - Battle Minions - Daily Missions - Skins - Hack n 'Slash

Psyched for LD48

This will be my 2nd Ludum Dare and I am very excited about it. My son was born since LD47 so I am a little worried that I won't have a lot of time during the weekend. Anyway, I will try to participate even if I'll have just a few hours.

Im in...

Hello guys....This is the second time iam attending ludum dare competition... ALL THE BEST!! to who and all attending and best of luck... If there are first - timers participating i wish them good luck and do ur best out of it :) CHILL OUT

An important notice for Mac players (repost for 48)

First things first, please, no “Mac vs PC” debates. Ludum Dare might be the only gaming community where I haven’t endured a “PC Master Race” flame war, it’d be nice if we could keep it that way.

Now that that is out of the way, I wanted to bring up a reoccurring issue that Mac-using participants have had to deal with in the past few Ludum Dares, the dreaded and cryptic “The Application can’t be opened” error.

34770.png

This was an issue with macOS Catalina that I believe is still present in macOS Big Sur. The actual cause is the app become corrupt when it’s uploaded/downloaded in a .zip file, particularly from itch.io

I know the cause, a fix for players that download apps with this error, and preventative measures uploads can take before distributing.

If you’re a developer sharing your game, be sure to place your .app file inside a .dmg file before uploading. Even if the .dmg is inside a .zip file, the .app file will still be protected. Your players should not have any issues.

For Mac users who’ve downloaded an already-corrupted .app, you’ll need to do a bit of Terminal maintenance. Right-click the .app, navigate to /Contents/MacOS, and find the single Unix executable file. Open a terminal window and type in “chmod +x “, then drag in the Unix executable. You should wind up something that looks like this:

chmod +x /Users/UserName/Downloads/GameName.app/Contents/MacOS/GameName Hit enter, you should see the icon change, and your .app should be good to go!

NOTE: I'm developing on Mac, so feel free to reach out to me about any games that need to be fixed.

18 Hours left time for another 8 Hours of Sleep

Jam packed day. Went from having only grid movement last night to having all my gameplay complete and about as much graphics as my skills allow me to produce. Plans for tomorrow are as follows - Music - Sound Effects - Options Menu (this is probably just gonna be sliders to control volume and maybe a resolution switcher in the desktop build) - Implement the actual rebindable controls system (this is mostly done already) - Create the information panel in game (so players don't have to look at something else to figure out how to play) - Other stuff that I am to tired to think about right now.

Here is the obligatory pre sleep screenshot of the days work. fulldayswork.png Also the player has animations for walking and jumping down the hole to go to a deeper level.

I forgot to post that I finished the game. Whoops!

Fortunately I did manage to submit for the compo so no problems there. If you like short puzzle games with full voice acting be sure to Click this text here. and play my game Down the Dwarven Hole

screenshoot2.png

And for those of you who are bad at puzzle games like me don't worry there is a button in the options menu to skip to the next puzzle.

Avalible both through HTML5 and on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Also playable on Apple Silicon because apparently unity supports that these days.

Hello Everyone!

What's good? Here with Mike for LDJAM <3

Using Midjourney etc. in the LD Compo

I was hoping that we could continue this discussion as LD51 approaches. I worry that unless either @pov makes a ruling or the community somehow comes to a consensus, there are going to be a lot of arguments and bad feelings come R+R time. Some people seem to think that they obviously should be allowed to use these new AI art tools, and some think that they obviously should be banned. I can see both sides; here are some arguments from the last thread and from me.

For * the Compo rules state that "content generators are allowed" * current models have niche uses; require editing, prompt engineering, trial and error to get good results (not likely to be true for long, though) * better art means better games, raising the bar for everyone * as AI becomes more integrated with game dev over time, it may eventually seem silly to prohibit its use * it's a tool; don't tell me what tools I am and am not allowed to use

Against * the "content generators" mentioned in the rules are nowhere near as advanced as these new ones * the process of text-prompt-only generation can be compared to "commissioning" art, which is not allowed in the Compo * right now, access to strong models is inequitable, requiring either money (Midjourney, DALL-E) or powerful hardware (Stable Diffusion) * the Compo is supposed to be "hard mode" Ludum Dare, and in some ways this goes against the spirit of that idea * the rules state that "you must work alone" — at what point along the AI continuum are you no longer working alone?

Multiple commenters suggested that competitors be allowed to use AI art if they opt out of the Graphics category. I don't love that idea: you're supposed to do that when using existing assets in the Jam. While people sometimes do opt out of categories in the Compo, I think you should really adhere to all of its rules or do the Jam instead.

The community isn't going to reach a consensus all at once, and certainly not in the comments section of this post, but the more we talk about it before the fact, the better.

Here's a poll, whatever that's worth.

What's with partial ratings?

So I was looking at my game's metrics and I noticed that the ratings given is a floating number partial-ratings-weird.png I don't understand why this happens. I checked all the games I rated and I gave them a score for each category.

Finally Finished!

It was super close though :stuckouttongue: This time I didn't use a prebuilt game engine which made this event very hard but also very fun!

I'm Ready!!!

I had a lot of fun last time, so I'm super excited for 55!

Feature Request

Bookmarking posts. Every so often I find an LD post that I really like and would like to find again. Right now I have to copy the url and save it somewhere in order to do that which is really annoying. A feature like this probably isn’t super high priority but I think it would be pretty cool.

Obligatory post

I'm in! Hopefully the Satisfactory withdrawals won't be too strong...

Stuff I'll probably use: - Godot - Blender if I go 3D - Aseprite if I go 2D - Krita for misc. art - Audacity, JSFXr, and FL Studio for any audio needs

Also took the day off after the jam ends to help recover
