Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

Procrastinators Unite!

We're down to less than a week in play/rate, and I'm sure I'm not alone in having procrastinated rating other people's games. So, rate + leave a comment on mine, and I'll do the same for you. Hopefully we'll all get to at least 20 ratings so we can get scored!

Minotorus is an adaptation of the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Explore the Labyrinth, convince Princess Ariadne to help you, and slay the monster once and for all! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/minotorus

only six days left

Only six days left to rate, it would be nice to have as many games get scored at the end as possible.

One such game is https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/lone-racer made by my friend, currently sitting at 14.5 reviews (and don't just say that he hasn't reviewed enough to get noticed, he has reviewed over 30).

Get out and rate like you've never rated before!

Feel free to post your game in the comments, especially if you have yet to get enough rates to get a score at the end.

Game Of Life : A Tribute to Mr Conway

Screenshotem2020-10-21/em22-51-31.png

Unrelated to LD47, but I just finished a simple version of Game Of Life, as a tribute to the legendary John Conway.

The playable web version is here : https://hakro.github.io/godot-game-of-life/

And the source code is here : https://github.com/hakro/godot-game-of-life

It's made using the latest version of Godot (3.2.4-beta) which was released a couple of hours ago.

Cheers

PSA: Leave feedback if you want ratings!

So I've seen several folks posting about games that haven't quite got enough ratings yet, and generally, their authors have actually rated quite a few games! (I've seen multiple who've rated around 30!) So what gives?

Well, if you didn't know, the algorithm was changed last Ludum Dare so that giving ratings is not enough. In particular, you get no credit for any ratings you give after you've given 5 ratings. The only way to get additional publicity at that point is to get karma for feedback--which is of course only possible if you actually leave feedback.

So if you want ratings, leave feedback! If you want more ratings, leave good feedback! I got 20 ratings after only rating 10 games and I was just idly playing through games by the people that commented on my game! You can easily rack up lots of karma just by leaving good feedback.

So hopefully that helps! :smile:

Post Jam of 'A Night Around The Fire'

It's so nearly done. Just a few more bugs to wrangle. I will share it before results day if it kills me.

I am happy with how it is starting to look.

Leave a comment on my game page and I will let you know when it's ready. Play and rate the Jam entry if you fancy seeing it as was but I have plenty of ratings so maybe head to the danger zone and help get them over the finish line.

This is what the jam entry looks like.

Better late than never!

Oh my, what a couple of weeks... have been moving and changing my life situation a bit so i haven't had that much time to play and rate games this time around sadly... barely have an internet connection so i have had to download games while out visiting friends and play them when i have had spare time which haven't been in abundance..

Anyways! i'm still trying to give some feedback where it's needed, if you could spare 10-20 minutes to give my game a shot and pass some feedback i would greatly appreciate it, would hate to have my game go bust for a lack of ratings.

the game itself is a bit barebones and (i think it's becoming my trademark.. jkjk) somewhat unintuitive.. but i finally managed to * generate * a playable world which i consider a HUGE personal victory. this is definitely a game i will give some more love whenever i get setup properly in my new living accommodations.

for any charitable soul out there, https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/blip here is the game

Also if anyone have any dark moody games to recommend i would gladly give them a go, kinda in the mood for something dystopian/dark or anything in that ballpark.

How to build a circular point-and-click game plot

Hi there!

For Ludum Dare 47, Revetoon and I have made Mobodo, a point-and-click game about getting out of a boring daily routine. One of the first challenges was to build the plotline, and this is what this post is all about!

But first of all, come and try Mobodo! It is better to try it before reading this post, as it contains spoilers about the storyline :grin:

The concept of the plotline

Our main idea to match the theme was to have the whole game be a cycle of working days, all looking like each other. Also, we wanted the game to be more like a story to watch than a real challenge for the player.

From those two assumptions, we decided that: * The game had to start in a loop (a bad loop). * The game had to end in a loop (a good loop). * Every state of the game had to be a specific loop, meaning that the player could at any point stop playing and see the game loop as long as he does not resume playing. This ensures that the game is easy and that the player cannot miss an opportunity ; he just has to wait to have the same opportunity again. * Every action of the player (including waiting) had to either do nothing or make the game go in the right direction. There are different paths and ways to play, but they all lead to the nice ending :heart_eyes:

Small summary of the story

At the beginning, the player is stuck in the following loop: "I sleep alone and I wake up - I go to work - I work a boring job - I have dinner alone at home". At the end, the player is in another loop: "I sleep with a loving girlfriend - I develop games from home as a job - I have dinner with my girlfriend". The idea here is not to fall into the very common "break the routine" plot: you are still in a routine at the end, but a better one.

There are 2 story arcs: * Work: you start by working a boring job. After breaking your alarm clock (therefore being late for work), unplugging the multi-socket at work and spilling coffee on your boss' shoes, you get fired. While back at home on your computer, you look at all the video game objects you have and decide to make video games for a living. * Love: you start alone. When the train brakes too hard one day, you fall and break your arm. The next day, a girl gives you her seat. Then, another day, you chat with her and she takes your number. She calls you, you have dinner together and voila, she is your girlfriend :)

How this "moving loop" was implemented

Here is the original diagram of the storyline described in the last paragraph! (translated from French)

MobodoDiagram.png

The Dual State Machine

You probably know the concept of the State Machine, but here is a reminder. A state machine is a system that has a finite number of "states", which can be represented in an enum variable, or with several variables. For each state, it has a specific behavior, and from each state it can "move" to zero, one or several other states to change its behavior.

For this game, each one of the story arcs is managed by a different state machine. This way, the player can progress independently on the two story arcs, but will always finish on the same end, where both state machines are on their "ending" state.

LoveArc.png

The Love State Machine is simple: as the love story arc is linear, the state machine just stores where the player is in the story by storing the last thing that happened on this arc (for instance, if the machine knows that the player just broke his arm, it is time for the girl to give her seat).

WorkArc.png

The Work arc is more complex, and split into two parts: "at work" and "at home"; they work in the same way so I will only describe the "at work" part. To progress, the player has to get a "boss anger" variable to 3, by breaking his alarm clock (hence being late at work), unplugging the multi-socket at work and spilling coffee on the boss (each increasing the anger by 1). As we wanted the coffee to be "the icing on the boss' anger", we made the boss get close enough to the coffee mug only if the anger is already 2. When the coffee is spilled on the boss, the anger is 3 and the player is finally fired.

The Loop Builder

The core of the game is this routine loop that can continue endlessly if the player suddenly stops playing. The have that, we made the "Loop Builder", responsible for the logic of the story, building the loop out of "vignettes". Every small scene that the player sees is called a "vignette"; for example, the first loop is made of 4 vignettes: 1. Sleeping alone 2. Transportation 3. Work 4. Dinner.

The Loop Builder takes the current vignette as a parameter, checks the state of the two State Machines and decides which vignette to put next. Like that, the loop and the story is build progressively. For example: - If the current vignette is "Sleep alone" and the player has not been fired yet, the next vignette should be "Transportation" because he has to go to work. - If the current vignette is "Sleep alone" and the player has already been fired, the next vignette should be "Work from home". - If the current vignette is "Work" and the boss' anger is 3, the next vignette should be "Getting fired".

Conclusion

This system (mainly the Loop Builder) is quite generic and is able to create all kinds of stories, even made of dozens of story arcs, each one of them having its own State Machine. We think it is quite a good way to build the game, as it is very easy to add a new vignette, or even a new story arc.

Thank you for playing, have a nice day! Remember to rate games, the results are near :smiley:

My favourite game so far ... is in danger

Dapairship made by 5 people as a jam entry is my favourite game in this jam so far. Its about keeping an airship in tact for a minute. You are alone but abled to respanwn after death and fix the ship with your clones. Graphics, sounddesign, mood, everything fits together. However this game has only 14 ratings so far. It would be sad if it wouldn't get a score since this might be one of the winners.

Time Hog Day : Post-Mortem

You may want to play the game before reading this, if you’re reading this:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/time-hog-day

SS1.png

Theme:

Upon hearing the theme my mind went to ground hog day and office work. I decided to use a ground hog day type scenario and apply it to an office worker stuck in a grind at work.

I wanted to make it so much of the time would be spent churning out levels so a simple game use idea.

In terms of mechanics, I quickly considered stealth a natural fit. I have played enough Hitman to know the joys of repetition in the genre, but understanding some of the difficulties I decided to model it on very early stealth games, namely metal gear 1.

This means that guards follow very set patterns and see, instead of the more standard cones, in straight lines in the cardinal directions.

For this clear signposting would be needed for the guard viewing direction and therefore animation would be needed, something I have mostly avoided in previous jam projects up until this point. So this would be part of what I hoped to learn with the project.

Stealth lent itself naturally to trying to sneak out of work, so enter out poor office worker trying to leave work early, he would have an array of other unique workers trying to talk to him and waster his time, each with a unique line of dialogue.

SS2.png

Problems:

  • Not enough testing: When I started I decided to use Unity's in-built character controller which I though would work with 2D square colliders and my initial testing seemed to indicate it does, but that was without fully fixing position and it turns out a 2d object will rotate but not step the player. Once it realised this I did the inelegant solution of adding 3D colliders for movement and 2D colliders for vision ray casting which had already been implemented instead of using a combined system. I was hoping to use the system of rotatable objects that I had discovered to add doors you could hide behind but it didn’t end up working consistently, but instead fixing rotation and not position allowed for an easy movable table that could be used more many of the puzzles I ended up with.

  • Layering: In 2D games you have to have some method of layering the sprites so the correct sprite will be displayed ontop of the others. Not wanting to work out a good solution, I hacked a solution whereby each object gets a script that sets its z position to its y position multiplied by a small amount, which works… I guess.

  • Restricting the resolution: Wanting to be as lazy as possible meant not wanting to deal with a plethora of different resolution option, this was not a terrible idea in itself but I decided to restrict it to the default option that itch gives which is something around 640x360px, a truly tiny screen. This restricted the possible levels massively because I wanted to make sure the game state was understandable from a glance. Why did I not simply allow multiples of this resolution? I did, but only right at the end so it didn’t change the design.

  • Planning too much content: I realised the idea of adding a set of unique office workers to each level with unique dialogue was too time consuming for the jam, and on top of this I realised that the theme fit the same guards where everyone in your work looks and acts the same. On top of this it made adding the easter egg really easy. This allowed me to focus on making levels, more of which could’ve been added but at some point I called it, which was a good thing because...

  • Animation error on compilation: Usually when I do a game jam I am working right up until the final hour. With this project basically complete with the only expansion required being additional levels to be added, or the current set of levels to be tweaked, I decided to release with what I had. This was a good decision because it turned out the build version did not work in the same way as the version in unity editor. Specifically the enemy animation and vision did not work, after being stumped for a while I tried a dev build and it turns out dev builds are super useful and it highlighted the issue with the game immediately. Basically, if I recall correctly, at the start of a level the enemies would when I tried to find the player with find object with tag “player” and then find the child of that which also had tag “player”, I assumed because it worked in the editor it would work in the build but it did not, this was easily fixed once the error was identified. Sadly footstep sound effects still do not work with the web build but I dunno whats up with that.

SS3.png

What went right:

I wanted the game to feel like you were stuck in a loop. This did not mean it had to be fun. I nailed that. The deliberate choice to load from the beginning if you were spotted, or even if you finish the game (hopefully) makes it feel like this guy is stuck in a dead-end job. Mechanically the game works fairly well for what I intended at least, I did not foresee adding movable cover which was a nice bonus.

What went wrong:

This restricted the level size due to the choice of resolution restricted the design immensely, which when combined with the choice of blocky level layouts meant some extremely bland levels. In each level I wanted to vary the size and challenge, with many of the levels trying to teach the player about how specific mechanics works, as well as giving players some shortcuts on earlier levels when they were caught and looped. But unfortunately many of the levels ended up just being a pain to get through. I also don't think I ever really implemented the crouch feature in a way that is useful to the game. It can be used to hide behind tables, but not being able to move with it makes it nearly useless.

Going forward:

I do not intend on continuing this game. Although I am not happy with the design of many of the final levels, I think the game provides the experience I wanted to provide and it helped me get a handle on some of the animation stuff used in unity. If I were to go forward with the game I would likely change the stealth mechanics to something more along the lines of Metal Gear 2.

Loop In - post production

Hello everybody,

Wanted to share a few thoughts with you all...

As first timers my team and I were very excited about this event, it wasn't only our first time in Ludum Dare, it was our first time in a Game Jam all together! we are a group of studants that met at school in part of our school projects, and immidietally clicked as a team, and decided to do other projects(games of course) togethr besides school.

After reading all your great responds and suggestions, we decided that the game is worth working on, and proceeded to develop it, here is our updated version based on your comments.

Thank you all again!!!

Do you like quality games, made by a team of dedicated people who love to create and love what they create ? Do you adore when the game graphics are simply delightfull? Do you appreciate when the music of a game moves you, because of how beautifull it is ?Did you answer yes to any of those questions ?

Yes ? Okay so maybe you shouldn’t give my game a try because it’s a game about eating cereals, so yeah… I mean, look at the title screen:

The last 8! and Character Design Choices

As the time progresses we are missing 8 more votes for a total of 20 votes :D So if you want to help us out with some feedback check out epoch: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/epoch

When we were brainstorming we decided that the main character should be a mad scientist - like Doc Brown or Rick. 42021c33198c97167fe067c4e0d7f575.jpg ac5152b9f7f50781b2b01e35463fc4e6.jpg

We kept the character design within that style range and made everything much rounder and cuter. Epoch_03.PNG

Having references helped a lot with creating the character and the whole world around it. Time went by and we were thinking a little more about what this characters traits are. We wanted a character, that has achieved a bunch and is close to finishing his final sciency project. The character should act like he has seen it all (not surprised by the weirdest things) and finally wants some rest. We tried to get that attitude across by writing the voice over with that in mind. For example - we had a lot of fun fooling around with 'What would the character say' - the word AGAIN~ was a recuring theme and so we decided to highlight it by bringin it up every now and then.

In the end - we simply had a lot of fun creating the character for epoch and we would like to know what are your design choices for characters during a 48hrs. jam? Are there any or to many?

Cheers~

LD 47 retrospect

With a week to spare I've got the ratings. Thanks everyone who got involved!

What started as a pre-jam coding exercise ended up being a pretty viable thing. Thanks everyone who +1'd theme :smile: (I voted against it precisely on grounds of having some code ready)

orboros-5x4.png

Now, how it went?

First things first. Was it fun? Yes, it was! A new game was born, more serious than the previous installments in my personal series of space stuff.

In the week before the jam I started to assemble a more refined Vulkan rendering library. After the jam I extracted some common parts back to the library. Next game would be even easier to start.

I wanted to stay 2D and use fancy shaders instead. That didn't fly. Drawing lines went good enough, but faking spheres with math got me only so much. And then there was problems with lines occluded by a square "sprite".

Capture d’écran de 2020-09-29 23-42-17.png

Reluctant to use model files I generated an icosphere and, after fixing all the usual problems with camera, depth and face orientation...

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-01 00-48-40.png

Next came the dread of amateur developers, the glorious quaternions.

Adding glitch to corruption, orbital elements calculation library used different coordinate basis and different math library (I made one myself to work specifically with vulkan coordinate system without jumping through OpenGL hoops).

Orienting things for linear motion is trivial(-ish), rotating frames require a few more tricks. Which I botched and, given the time constraints, decided to skip. That's why you see nice ambiguous spheres instead of nice pointy spaceships :sweat:

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-01 23-53-22.png

On the other hand, adding planet and background textures from cube maps was fairly straightforward. I even didn't have to assemble texture arrays myself, thanks to Vulkan API and KTX format.

Adding simple directional lighting was no sweat either. I considered adding a specular reflection to the planet surface, but then had to skip over it in favor of getting controls right.

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-03 23-01-04.png

The last jam day was appropriately stressful.

I spent first half on it making a proper Linux build that could work outside my own machine. Second half went to my day job. And then third half :sweat_smile: left to iron out remaining OS and hardware compatibility issues. Few close friends were recruited for build testing.

6 hours remained to take a walk and add font rendering capability. I went with simple font atlas, but due to problems with transparency in compressed textures I switched to SDF and slap-dashed a decent renderer.

Quick thanks to all my fellow jammers! Really it's been a blast so far! :skull:

If anyone still wants to check it, here's my HTML game 'Group Chat'.

Here's a fun entry almost at 20 ratings, let's get it there!

Looper

This was one of the first games I played through and reviewed when rating began, and it pains me to keep seeing it in the danger category as I thought it was fun to play through, albeit it is quite a large download and I was fairly harsh in my original feedback. I also spent quite a bit of time trying to beat it, I suppose that has something to do with it as well. It is the nicest looking (in my opinion of course) 3D game I've seen yet, I really liked how all of the art came together and the gameplay, although most certainly limited by the universal nature of this jam, was fun and had a unique twist to it. Either way, the link is above if anyone is interested in giving that entry the ratings it needs, at the very least I enjoyed playing through it.

Need more Ratings!

Please help, I am in the need for a couple more ratings as I want more feedback as I am 12 and need to improve my skills a lot.

Please check my game out at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/loopamonium.

Thank you everyone! And good luck on rankings

Keyboard Cowboys Recommend...

keyboardcowboys.jpg

It’s that time again…

The Keyboard Cowboys have been hard at work playing as many games as we can this LD! Our lives have been crazy, but that hasn’t stopped us (too much)!

And we’re so glad that we’ve been able to play so many so far, because there are some absolute bangers in this pool this year. The bar for quality has definitely been raised, and there are some super talented people on here who are rising to the challenge.

In an effort to spread the love, we’d like to highlight some of our favorite games that we’ve played so far. We’ve consciously decided to order them from fewest to most ratings received, in hopes that the more underrated games get more attention, but we love them all, regardless!

So now, without further ado, heeeeeerrreee we go!

Terror of the Lazy River

@birdwards

lazyRiver.jpg

We’re honestly shocked this one hasn’t gotten more attention. It checks all of the boxes of a great LD entry in our opinion. Simple gameplay, a fun unique premise, pleasant visuals, and a practically bug-less experience (at least when we played). This one takes < 5 min to play and is just a great all-around package.

Stuck in a Drum Loop

@rodobodolfo

drumLoop.jpg

Speaking personally, I have a huge weakness for games that just sound nice. I’m sure you’ll find that to be a pattern throughout this post. Stuck in a Drum Loop is no exception, and it’s super novel to boot! I get really sad when unique entries like this don’t get more attention. :slight_frown:

In the Loop

@thegamerasd

circlePong.jpg

Speaking of novel concepts deserving of more attention, In the Loop is a super clever high-score single-player Pong game that is both easy to understand but super tricky to master. We highly suggest you check it out!

Universalis

@hawkin

universalis.jpg

Hey look, it’s another beautiful-sounding game. Not only that, but it looks beautiful as well! This is a fun little orbital sandbox toy that is well worth your time to play around with. Hats off to making this thing solo!

Chipperton

@atmctype, @popdaddygames

chipperton.jpg

Chipperton is a pleasant little experience where absolutely nothing bad happens. The two devs behind the game must’ve worked themselves to death to pump out this much content in such a short span of time. Go support their hard work!

Clockmaker

@cyphyrgriffon, @tristan-mansfield

clockmaker.jpg

Clockmaker is one of those “I could definitely see this expanded into a full game” entries that always seems to impress us. While the difficulty curve ramps up shockingly fast, the game has a level of polish and design focus that deserves more attention.

Goop Loop

@jitspoe

gooploop.jpg

I hate this game and I love this game. If you are at all a fan of Bennett Foddy-esque games, I guarantee you will enjoy this one. More people need to play this. I will be back to conquer it eventually…

Loophole Kingdom

@mateusboga

loopholeKingdom.jpg

We’ve seen a lot of “Groundhog Day” games during this jam, but Loophole Kingdom differentiated itself with some super clever writing and equally charming artwork. The fact that this was accomplished solo is beyond commendable, as well.

That Dream Again

@yossarian, @turgidharrier, @bokonon

thatdreamagain.jpg

Mmmmmmmmm, this one’s cozy…Such a pleasing art style and sound design. The team here really nailed the dream-like aesthetic. Just good vibes all-around on this entry.

Woofice Chair

@moski, @kroltan, @robinaite, @jorgegamedev

wooficeChair.jpg

You can always count on Whales and Games to put out some quality stuff, and this entry is no exception. Adorable art, a solid and unique premise, and some top-notch sound design. This entry really is the whole package.

Splines ‘n Shapes

@sharkwithlasers

splinesNShapes.jpg

This entry was like ecstasy for my ears. The rewarding cohesion of sounds that result from solving a puzzle are super satisfying, and the puzzle premise itself is both simple and super novel. Go play it now!

Grave Juice

@aditon, @firebelley

graveJuice.jpg

Now this is one damn polished entry! Everything, from the sounds, to the visuals, to the unique mechanics, all work great together. While it can be a little challenging at times, the undeniable charm of this game is more than worth the effort.

Divine Drifter

@aevek, @bongard22, @floppynub, @rhoka, @keenan-wulff, @quantumcaveman, @zebshee, @drsnowdude, @brood-machina, @enzar17

divineDrifter.jpg

Buckle up, this one’s a wild ride. It’s immediately apparent how much love and attention was put into this game. The music’s bangin’, the visuals are striking, and the mechanics are silly and fun to mess around with. This is one seriously impressive entry.

Singularity

@andre-sadie, @nsadie

singularity.jpg

Singularity is such a simple yet novel premise. It’s like some weird hybrid between a card game, puzzle game, and competitive 1v1 game. And it all just…works! We’re all a big fan of this one.

O O O

@rextgun

ooo.jpg

This game takes a super simple premise and pushes it to the extreme. It’s a testament to elegant design with how much the dev was able to squeeze out of such a straightforward mechanic.

Lily Pad Drifters

@mike09123

lilyPad.jpg

“Simple to learn, hard to master” is the name of the game for this entry. We love the unique concept here, and once you start to get into the flow, it feels suuuuuuuuper good to hop between lily pads and rack up a high score.

MonkeyVM

@znw, @micerkol, @gloomyfolken, @abvadabra

monkeyVM.jpg

We’ve seen a lot of coding games throughout this jam as well, and this one was definitely our favorite. The polish on this game, both mechanically and aesthetically, is super impressive. On top of that, the puzzles are cleverly thought-out and have a lot of meat to them (even if they did get super mind-melty by level 4…).

Amusement Shark

@no-grapes-games

amusementShark.jpg

This is one suuuuuuuuper clever action-puzzler! Navigating a maze with a constantly spinning avatar makes for some mind-bending maneuvers. Couple that with a super adorable art style, and you got yourself a winner right here!

Hyperloop

@onkel-mo, @m2u-84, @bastian, @leeloo, @mrpoopybutthole, @duke, @byzanth, @eweren, @kayahr, @pushking, @headcr4sh, @kuri, @zeenyoga, @thecoconutdream, @very-dark-lord

hyperloop.jpg

Entries like these make us feel like complete n00bs by comparison. Hyperloop does an excellent job of crafting a unique atmosphere with solid gameplay mechanics, an impressive amount of assets, superb lighting, and A++ sound design. We forgot we were playing a game that was made in a weekend for a few minutes.

Paper Planes

@samdemaine

paperplanes.jpg

Y’all have probably seen this one floatin’ around the front page already, and for good reason. This is a charming, simple little game that nails exactly what it sets out to do. I could see myself booting this up in my younger years to kill time in class, which I think is a telltale sign of a classic entry. :ok_hand:

…And there you have it! Those are some of our favorites that we’ve played so far. With less than a week to go, the clock is ticking for us, and we still have a lot more games to play, so if we discover any more gems between now and then, we’ll be sure to post additional recommendations!

Again, we are super floored at the level of quality this time around. Keep on keepin’ on, we can’t wait to see what y’all put out next!

‘Til next time. :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Thank you for playing our game!

We would like to thank all the feedbacks we received, and to say that we are very happy with the results of our game! Everyone worked hard to deliver the most complete and polished game possible, with a very original story and responsive controls. If you haven’t played in a while, we’re waiting for your feedback!

Thank you!

How should I host my post jam game?

Hi, where should I host my post jam version as I don't want to host the post jam as another game on itch.io as I can't host 2 HTML5 on one page but, I want it to be a online game. Hope you understand my problem and as you all might be familiar to hosting post jams, where do you host them? And I know that it is too late to post a post jam as there is only 4 days left.

Please help us reach 20 ratings!

Some game recommendations

In the past weeks we all have played a lot of games. These are my favourites:

- Driven Round the Loop

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/driven-round-the-loop

In this game some cars and other traffic are stuck in looping roads. You can set jump marks to let them change the road to solve given tasks. Always remember: The task matters - nothing more! A funny game with nice graphics.

- Despaiship

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/despairship

The task is easy. Keep the airship floating for a minute. Earlier clones of you will help to fix all the failures and problems caused by sudden events. Just don't block yourself! This game is balanced perfectly, has cool graphics and sounds as well as really nice scene cuts.

- Hope/Remember

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/hoperemember

Hope is a girl at your school and possibly your date for a school's party. It should be obvious what to to... A story telling RPG with another layer of challenge. Really good audio and neat graphics.

- Gravitron - 2047

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/gravitron-1

Neonlight, Particles and glowing enemies - a cool FPS. Just that you can't shoot. At least no bullets. Use the gun to set "fusionpoints" and let the objects attract each other. Lauching enemies in the sky in a futuristic city has its own fun! (Oh and you should build this core thing.)

- Purifier

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/purifier

A perfect example on how much a game can be polished. Whilst it's in fact just a topdown shooter the graphics, the UI and the whole background stuff is incredible. A jam game with online highscore?? And settings for so many things??

- Devoured

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/devoured

So this game has some puzzles but they are not really innovative. BUT the mood of this game is extremly good! Ever wanted to see a game where visuals and audio form a atmosphere that leads your way through the game? Well this is the perfect example! Even if there was absolutely no gameplay this would still be a must play. Just put your headphones on and enjoy!

So! This were my fovourite games. If you found any games that you like a lot, feel free to leave them in a comment. I don't want to miss a good game.

Mixamo?

I've seen a few people talking about using https://www.mixamo.com/#/ in LDJam and was curious if this is considered a content generator or an asset library?

It seems it's basically a library of animations and some retargeting features to apply them to different characters. I think most people would agree making 3D animations like these is HUGELY time consuming and a major consideration in making any kind of 3D game during a jam. As such I see a tool like this as totally game changing for the kinds of projects one could consider.

I was just wondering for future jams what the feelings are on using this tool and if using this tool is considered the same as say an asset store animation pack?

Postjam version of Ouroboros is available now!

I haven't been posting about it a ton, but here's some screenshots from the horror game we made this time around.

It's always hard to self-judge how scary these are, since you're already aware of everything that's going to happen while playing it (what you know can't hurt you, etc). But according to everyone else, the game is "terrifying" and "truly scary"!

Solo Gamejam Experience | A Ludum Dare 47 Story

This is my second Ludum Dare competition, and as usual I truly enjoyed myself. Last year, I brought things to a close for myself by gathering my thoughts about my experience in a devlog/vlog sort of format.

I did the same this time around and tried to summarize "what it took" to be a solo amateur game developer in this lovely gamejam event. :v:

Some rambling about my creative process

My games usually put much emphasis on the mood and story.

This time my intention was to give more focus to the game-mechanics.

Gif4.gif

I prepared a platformer-engine with a unique grabbing-mechanic as my base-code for the COMPO. I hoped that I could somehow tie the mechanics to the theme, but I kinda struggled with that as usual.

Gotta say, I wasn't very happy with the theme when it was announced!

Notebook.png

This was the first thing I scribbled in my notebook when I saw the theme. You could say it's quite an accurate depiction of my feelings at the time.

- "From all the alternatives, we had to go with this!"

I was sobering up at a local pub, and reality was just about to sink in. (It was 2AM in my time-zone)

Quite an ideal time and place to reflect on the state of being Stuck in a loop!

After a night of not very much sleep, my first day started quite slowly.

Even though the chosen theme was one of the least inspiring ones for me, I had already been throwing a lot of ideas in the air during night. There was one particularly good one I came up with, but I didn't (ludum) dare to go for it. It would have been an awesome concept, but I didn't see myself succeeding in something like that in such a short time.

Typewriter small.gif

Obviously I wasn't feeling very energetic. Starting out with the gameplay-side didn't motivate me at all, so I decided to begin with a intro-segment featuring this otherworldly spinning typewriter!

My LD-entries usually feature a FMV/stop-motion intro. This time I even considered skipping the "tradition", but it came out very naturally.

I had absolutely no idea how it would even relate to the overall game (besides being an obvious thematic motif). It felt more like a separate lump of creative anxiety I had to get out somehow.

Typewriter Write 1.gif

I was in a figurative and literal writer's block, and apparently I ended up making a game about that experience.

Text 2b.png

And in a weird way things started to click.

output3.gif

I decided to use the sketch I drew earlier in the pub, and so "the guy with the blank stare" became the player-character.

The sketch was scanned and then colored in GIMP. I really like the end-result.

Gif c.gif

Gameplay-wise my entry is a very regular platformer, where the catch is a unique mechanic that lets you move and stack boxes.

During development and even after finishing I wasn't entirely sure how well the intro and the actual game would fit in as a whole.

To my surprise the end-result was seamless enough.

commento.png

I was very happy to hear that there were people who enjoyed the experience on a emotional level, and this particular comment by @bereg was quite heartwarming. I don't think I was even fully conscious myself of all the juxtapositions in the game-play and overall symbolism there actually is.

Hearing that your work makes someone reflect upon their own existence is the ultimate praise for a person who considers themselves an artist.

I think given different circumstances (= those being some other theme being picked and me not drinking the night before!) I might have created a more polished game that would've utilized the core-mechanics further and in more clever ways.

In other words: A better game in a technical sense.

But since the starting point was a struggle for me, I somehow managed to tap into a strange creative space where I could express something that seems to resonate with people on a deeper level.

And in that respect, I don't think this Ludum Dare could have gone better for me!

Once again, thanks for the jam everyone!

This is the last weekend we'll ruin, we swear...

streamAnnouncementCat.png

The Keyboard Cowboys are still at it, playing your Ludum Dare games for one more weekend!

As usual, we'll prioritize anyone who submits their game and is still in chat when we get to it, but if we see no takers we'll just plow through the rest of our list of people who were kind enough to rate and comment on Dude Ranch.

EU folks, rejoice!! While today we're starting at our usual time (aka the middle of the night for y'all), tomorrow we are looking into doing an early afternoon stream by popular request. Time is still TBD, but we hope to see you there!

Until then, we look forward to anyone who is willing to subject themselves to the madness tonight (and we apologize in advance for it).

'Til next time! :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Want to "acquire" your guests' hard earned cash? Try out Roller Riches!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/roller-riches

Thanks to everyone who has rated our game and provided valuable feedback! We really appreciate each and every comment that is made, and we're grateful for the positive response :smile: Roller Riches is an incremental game where your goal is to build a roller coaster that coaxes poor suckers (your guests) out of their money.

RollerRichesSmall2.gif

We're going to redesign and rebuild this game from the ground up as a side project, with a focus on adding more traditional incremental game mechanics (prestige, multiple currencies, an actual semblence of balance, etc). If you have any suggestions for how we could develop Roller Riches into a fuller incremental game, let us know!

Please feel free to post your game for myself and others to check out. If you're interested and haven't given Roller Riches a try yet, check it out here! Thank you!

Plague Friend's Deathly Journey is nearing its end!

Hi all!

I had so much fun working on my very first game in my very first game jam! I was able to finish the bare minimum for a complete functional game within 48 hours, but there was so much more I wanted to add, but just didn't have time for.

So, ever since the jam ended, I've been working hard on completing my vision for the game! I've added lots more visual effects, some animations, sound effects, platforming, extra (and secret) dialogue, lots and lots of polish and bug fixing, and I even made my own sound effects and background music!

I especially had fun creating the music, I've loved listening to videogame soundtracks all my life, and making my own was a really special experience. I'm sure you'll hear the influence of Zelda, Night in the Woods :3

It's been really great to keep iterating on the game, and see it go from the bare minimum to something I'm really proud of.

I know its super late in the ratings cycle, but I'd love it if you try out the post jam version and tell me what you think! There are still some things I'd like to polish, and a few bugs I need to fix (if you play your cards right, you can end up at the Butcher's Shop with three coins, and he'll have no idea what to do about it!), but I'm very happy with the current state of the game, and I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it :3

Thanks for the awesome comments! Definitely considering expanding the concept!

TankBotFull.png

Seems quite a few people would like to see my LD47 game get expanded in the future.

To do that I would probably have to rewrite most of the game's systems from scratch, this would be done so to make the game more efficiently expandable, my ways of setting this up for Ludum Dare were extremely hacky, and would probably be laughed at by more experienced gameplay programmers. Also would probably redo the graphics style completely, and remake the character controller a bit less floaty.

If I end up expanding this I would consider having several overall levels, with 3-6 sub-levels between them. The game so far is like one of what would be an easier overall level, with 5 sub-levels to finish. In the expanded version, there would be a save system, optional collectables, maybe enemies and dangers (not sure if that fits the design vision).

Again, I want to say I can't guarantee this is going to happen, right now I am waiting on my Ludum Dare results, to get some idea of how people rated it overall!

Anyway if you haven't seen the game yet and randomly come across this post, here's my mini YouTube trailer of it:

Thanks for reading and have an awesome day!

Bug Fixed version release

BUG FIX VERSION AVAILABLE

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/ouroboros-paradox

Hey all, Thank you so much for giving the game a try. The team did an awesome job, creating an awesome array of things for this game, a number of which could not be shown off. Especially all the music and audio effects, we have multiple effects for 6 different weapons hitting different surfaces, effects for the gunfire, effects for the reloads. The Audio guys did an awesome job and we just barely got to show of about 10% of all their awesome work.

We also didn't get to show off all the room variations, all of them has been created, but for some reason things just didn't go together as expected at the end.

But now the GOOD NEWS We have re-released the game! https://ld47-webhost-postjam.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/index.html Now with 100% more bug fixes - no new features - so it should be inline with the rules if you want to re-rate the work :) but I will understand as well if you stick with your original rating.

Bugs that were fixed: The infinite loop just ended after the first boss room - The code had been written, but had not been hooked up in the release, but had been hooked up in private scenes (Unity) Gunshots - There was a bit of trouble with this, as it had been implemented multiple times - it's been corrected and the raycast system hooked up. The Boss floating in midair, I just dragged him down to the ground. The particle effects when oyu hit an enemy kinda sucked - this is because webGL looks different to unity's inbuilt player, so you couldn't see the sparks very well. We tweeked the particle system so you can see the sparks better. Game AI - It was confusing to the players, so I trimmed some of this down. World lighting - There were far too many lights in the scene, and they were making things very dark. I removed a bunch of them, and added one to the player to fix this bug. You now have light so you can see what's happening

MOUSE SENSITIVITY - The game is so much more sensitive on WebGL, the code for all of that had been written, but not correctly connected.

VOLUME CONTROL - I added some sliders for later development, but didn't hook them up, so this is purely graphical on the menu, and not a feature

I also attached the Health system to a couple of objects that had not been hooked up correctly, and shifted a few objects around a touch to stop different bugs, like running through walls and the AI wondering through closed doors.

I hope you like the game!

Developping a screen wrapping feature

We decided to base our game on a screen wrapping feature to match this game jam's theme, but its implementation wasn't as straightforward as expected.

ScreenWrapping.gif

Using Unity, playing with screen borders was far from impossible, but still took some time.
We opted to use trigger colliders to know when the player went out of bounds, but we had to change dynamically the size of that collider for every window resizing.
Fixing the aspect ratio was also important, otherwise players with different aspect ratio would have different ways to finish the puzzle levels.

Player teleportations had to be smooth; we did not want to have a blind spot where part of the player could not be seen.
One thought we had was about using cameras to focus on the part of the player we needed and print it at the right place; but given the many unknowns we had about such a system, we went for a simpler system.
We created fake characters to display when straddling two or more screen borders. After a while we decided to always keep 9 characters existing, separated by the screen height and width.
MorePlayers.png
By teleporting the player when he went entirely out of bound, we were sure we would always keep all needed character models in screen.

We still have to take care about the collisions: the 9 characters could not use collisions at the same time, but by activating only the colliders visible on screen, the relevant collisions were present. The only special case was when only one side of the screen ended on a wall: to avoid a character appearing within a wall, we created an invisible collider to simulate the wall on the other side.

Overall, what made the feature harder to control was the player controlled camera. By choosing to allow camera moving, we added a more original feature to create richer levels, but also encountered a few buggy situations.
Fortunately the game ended up being playable, and building the prototype around that feature gave a pretty satisfactory jam game for us.

Screenshot Week - post # 02

The unseen work of the programmers

Hellooo fellow jammers~ :fallen_leaf:

*The second post of the 'Screenshot Week' is a bit different from others,

as it won't be about the art of Led Astray but instead about the art of coding~*

details forest.jpg

screenshots from the forest level that I promised to upload, also help this b i g post look friendlier (:

Few days back, we were talking about the comments we got on our page and reading this message from @pulni

became the motivation to create this post...

pulni_sad.jpg

From that point on, I realized while reading comments here and there that it's true! Programmers seem to not get as much noticed as artists and designers do. They generally seem to be getting much less praise... and mostly get noted when something... doesn't work correctly... :sweat_smile: (pooor people :confounded: )

I don't like admitting it.. but i also tend to honor artists and designers more... so to compensate.. I decided to publicly thank our programmers @pulni @lyrcaxis and @bloodystupidviktor :cringy_narrator's_deep_voice: for their remarkable ability to bend :bug: the :bee: elements :beetle: of :ant: coding :spider: in order to complete the difficult task of giving life to Led Astray and so many more!

And to all the programmers out there... we might not talk about it very much but we are indeed secretly cherishing you~! Videogames wouldn't be real without you, so thank you as well!! :blush:

Plz, don't forget to give some love to the brilliant programmers out there too! :greenheart: :yellowheart: :purpleheart: :heart: :blueheart: :yellowheart: :greenheart: :heart: :purpleheart: :blueheart: :greenheart: :yellowheart: :purpleheart: :heart: :blueheart: :yellow_heart:

Almost at 20 Ratings

Really struggled to get to 20 ratings this time around, would love it if anybody could drop a rating for my game. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/rebeat

Last Minute Rating

I've been super busy IRL, but with only 3 days left, it's time to dive in and rate games and GET ratings...

Try my double-implementation of the theme: Office Routines pokes fun at the work loops and mundane tasks we sometimes have to perform. But, it's also an infinite runner where the level constantly repeats!

Try it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/office-routines
