Last LD Stream "Early Bird" Celebration!

streamannouncementearly.png

Due to (semi) popular demand, the Keyboard Cowboys are doing one final stream playing LD games at a time that is not smack dab in the middle of the night for EU folks!

Feel free to submit your games in chat if you would like us to play them! When it comes time to choose our next game to play, we will prioritize anyone who is both on the list and is still in chat.

Otherwise, we still have a dozen or so games that we still need to return the favor on for folks who were kind enough to rate and comment on our game, Dude Ranch.

We hope to see you there! (and sorry in advance...) :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Our intern has lost something, uh, personal...

I think I'll continue these even after the official event is over. Originally I planned pumping these recommendations out in a bi-weekly pattern, but that was simply too much for me to handle. If anything goes according to plan, I'll do three more for the ld47 until I finally shut up for a while :D

Thank you for the Plague Friend Love!!!

Hi Ludum Dare!

I wanted to thank you all so much for playing my game and giving me such kind and supportive feedback! This was my first game jam and my first time developing a game ever, and I was able to get the required 20 ratings for a score, wow! I've been having a blast playing and rating the other entries, I'm really looking forward to seeing the final results.

This has been such a fun and positive experience, and I'm looking forward to participating in the next one too.

If you have any time in these final few days, I'd love to hear what you think of my entry. I've been putting a lot of work into the post jam version in the past few weeks, adding music, sound effects, animations, "dynamic celestial bodies", and secret dialogues to discover.

We had a lot of fun participating in Ludum Dare 47. There was a total of three of us who worked on this project. I invited my younger brother to participate in his first game jam ever. We had a lot of fun creating this time looping, dungeon crawler.

I want to thank everyone who left motivating comments and critical feedback on our submission.

Please check out Chrono Crack for yourself, and let us know what you think. We really appreciate the feedback!

MTYXKX.png

Chrono Crack is a top down, dungeon shooter with a time looping mechanic. We created time rifts that teleport you into the future back at the beginning of the dungeon. As you travel forward in time, pillars and doorways fall apart opening new parts of the dungeon. As a secondary objective, we added coins and item upgrade shops that make your gun even more powerful.

My favorite upgrade by far is “multi-shot” which turns your gun into an automatic shotgun that obliterates the zomboogers like butter.

chronoemcrack/emmulti-shot.gif

We have some new stuff coming in our post-jam update: - New art - Improved dungeon layout - Smoother movement - New enemy type: acid spitter - Reverse time portals

Happy weekends!

Hello, everyone! I hope your weekends are really good.

Well, it's almost over and my goal "take 100 ratings" not achieved. But still 55 for the first time it's not bad, isn't it? So thank you so much who gave us them.

But...

Today I'm going to play and rate games, who didn't received their 20th. Come and join me! Because I think that every game deserve to be rated and get a score at the end.

Almost the end ... need a bit more ratings!

Hi everyone!

I'm sorry to ask you that late, and don't love a lot to do that, but I woke up today, saw there is only two days till the end of the ratings, and we still don't have 20 ratings, just need a few more!

So, give it a try

There's a little issue with the rating system

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not mad at anyone and I want people to make games however they want. There's a chance that I don't know something important so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok, there's a design error that I've noticed in the last month. My friend and I made a game this jam and it was awesome as always, but due to school and other stuff, we could only rate about 43 games total (about 21 each). Now, we got 40 ratings and that's ok, it's a 1:1 ratio and I get it. But there are games made by about 5+ people, which means that if each team member has made the same effort as we did (played and rated 20 games), they will get to 100 ratings +-. That's a little bit broken because it leaves games like us in the back, is there a factor that takes into account the team size?

Again, I get this isn't the point of this jam and there's no prize at the end, I have a blast playing games and they're really awesome. I have nothing against big teams, they usually make super good games. :)

So, is there a balance for it?

I'll rate your games!

I'd like to rate some games, so leave your games in the comments and I'll play as many as I can. Also, I'd really appreciate if you left feedback on my game Suitcase Panic.

Thanks!

Time Crash available for Android

JAM is about to end and the complete version of "(Doctor Simon's) Time Crash" is now available in Goolge Play for android devices. Thanks you for playing and reviewing, your feedback has been very useful in the final version. I have used some of your ideas: - An ending. Now you can return to the present. - Special features. It's not just a memory game anymore. - Bonus stages. A break to recover some energy. - Rewards. - New backgrounds, more figures and items. - Advanced score system, and the possibility of making combos.

This game Electron the Electrical Engineer is one of the most intuitive yet satisfying games and best puzzle games I've played in this compo and it only needs 5 more votes.

Not My Game

This is not my game and I am not friends with the author or affiliated in any way I'm just a fan of the game. I played it for a long time yesterday and had tons of fun trying to solve the puzzles (which I did!)

The jam has been wild. So far I've seen countless clever mechanics that involve time and position loops, and the more emotional, theoretical conceptual loops (stuck in a futureless life, stuck in mini-purchases, etc.) As a programmer, I've seen game mechanics implemented in impossibly simple yet expressive ways. First time LD jammer and this entire experience is such an eye-opener. 10/10 will jam again.

POKKO Post-Mortem

500.png In this post, I'll talk about the development of POKKO and how it's received.

What is POKKO?

POKKO is a short puzzle-platformer game, made by 4 people. You control a boy who is stuck in a Game Boy game. When you collect a Game Boy, a clone of you gets spawned, who repeats your past actions. You need to use him to solve the puzzles.

POKKO is currently played by 1857 players. It's available for WebGL, Windows, Mac, Linux.

How it started?

I'm a member of a Turkish game development community, called ÜNOG. It has a Discord server and channels dedicated to Ludum Dare. I'm a programmer and designer, I was looking for a team of visual artists and musicians. One of POKKO's artists, Deniz Eryılmaz, was also looking for people to work with, he shared his portfolio in ÜNOG's channel and I thought "I must work with him!". Thankfully, he also chose me to work together. He also mentioned his friends who we could work together; another 2D artist (Emir Çetinkaya) and a musician (Kağan Morkoç). I loved their portfolio, too, I am glad that they joined our team.

The tools we used

Unity 2019, Visual Studio 2017, Aseprite, FL Studio

Level 1emEnglish/em1920x1080_0.png

The idea

We had wanted to make a pixel art game. After the theme was announced, we came up with the idea of a boy who is stuck in a Game Boy game. A clone of boy would get summoned when we collected a Game Boy. I offered a time limit to the game after the clone gets summoned, because the computer's (browser's, to be exact) memory could not be sufficient to keep an infinite number of player positions. Also, this time limit could make the game more enjoyable.

What went right:

  • People loved the visuals of the game. I think visuals are the strongest part of POKKO.
  • The visuals and sounds could be completed in time. In fact, there are some sprites and a cutscene that we haven't used in the game. The artists created a cutscene which would play on game over, but I thought it would be annoying if a cutscene played each time we failed.
  • I could program the game good enough to be released as a Ludum Dare game.
  • Clone system works fine. Technical details: Player's positions get stored in a Vector3 list at each fixed update. The clone's position is set to those values in his own fixed update.
  • People liked the twist at the game's end, which fits to the theme of LD47.

vlcsnap-2020-10-05-21h38m54s433.png

What went wrong:

  • There are some problems with the coding of the game. The protagonist can't jump if he's standing on his clone and the clone is jumping, for example. I had made some platform games in the past and used the same techniques, but those games weren't complex enough. I couldn't find time to fix the game's controls even after the jam ended.
  • Apparently the idea of summoning clones is not unique to POKKO. I have seen about 3 Ludum Dare 47 games that use similar mechanics. There is also The Company of Myself.
  • I used Unity's own video system for the cutscene. It didn't work on WebGL and Linux the first time I tried. I had to spend some time on it.
  • I couldn't find time to create more levels, as I was working on making video work in WebGL.
  • Pixel perfect camera caused some problems, the game didn't run correctly on 1366x768 resolution. It turned out that I had to make some settings.

Conclusion

I'm really glad with the game we created. I just wish I could program better platform mechanics. I expect a good rating on Visuals and Audio categories.

Need help on few ratings to reach minimal score!

Last chance to play and rate Nuclear Loop Labs

ss3.jpg

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/nuclear-loop-labs

We made a game where the corridors loop and extend infinitely as you walk throught them, unless you find the way to break out of the loop. I wish I had put in more levels but I like the resulting mood and mechanic.

We're looking for some more ratings, as we got barely more than the minimum of 20. If you have 10 minutes or so (the game is HTML5 and very short), we would love the feedback.

You can also leave us your game to try here in the comments.

Thank you for playing Mobodo!

The title says it all!

It was a great experience for Revetoon and I to participate in Ludum Dare 47, and the awesome feedback we got for Mobodo made us so proud

Mobodo_WHIXiiqeDO.png

For those who would like to, come and play Mobodo right now! It is a cute and atmospheric point-and-click game about changing your character's daily routine with a better one

Only 2 days left... have you played Loop Frogs yet?

A fun little puzzle game about two froggy friends; one just plodding through life trying to get to the next level, and another with super jumping skills, an interesting relationship with the fourth dimension and a tenuous grip on his own place in the space/time continuum. It's a classic story of friendship.

Peak Hamster Engineering

front-flip.png

Thank you so much to everyone who played Hyper Hamster and left some feedback, the response has been so positive! :hamster:

Although this was not our only game idea for the jam, this was the one that we felt had the simplest fundamental elements and would be relatively quick to prototype. This saved us a lot of time to focus on visuals, sound, and game feel to make the game as fun and satisfying as possible.

Here is the actual design document of the game, annotated just for you!

loop.png

The only things missing from this early document are the actual goal of the game (reaching hyper velocity!), and what obstacles would actually be, but most of the inner workings were set from the start.

Here is what obstacle spawning looks like in action:

obstacle_spawn.gif

It was of course important to make sure the player never sees this, so we split the wheel in 4 segments and only spawn obstacles in the one right behind the camera.

Obstacles are placed using a vector that goes from the world center (which is also the center of the wheel) to the pink trigger, we then rotate that vector along the wheel with a semi-random angle to determine obstacle positions. Obstacles may then be shifted along the X axis for more variety.

There was actually a fair bit of math involved in the making of this game, even something as simple as the speed meter uses a Sin function for the oscillation and a square root to make the progress feel more accurate/fair.

meter.gif

As mentioned above, one of our main focus was game feel and making the game as satisfying as possible despite its simplicity. This is done through a myriad of little details, like the aforementioned speed meter, the dangling apples on the HUD, the "SPEED LOSS" and "SUGAR RUSH" blinking texts, particle effects and distorsions using FOV and chromatic aberrations, sound effects, and of course that signature Hyper Hamster front flip.

This is all of those things in play, minus the sound:

gameplay.gif

And that's all of the beans I'll spill for now! :hamster:

Feel free to play and rate if you want, we're always happy to read more of your feedback!

Bus Bump: A short story-based puzzle game

Bus Bump is my compo entry for LD47, which I'm really happy with. You knock your head on your way to school. No matter what you do, you keep waking up at that specific point where your bus took a hard bump. Like in the movies, you try to uncover the mystery of your school to break this never-ending loop.

Try Bus Bump: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/bus-bump

Are you running short on ratings ? I'd love to play your game too ! Send me your games and I'll try to play them ! (Altough preferably HTML5 or web)

Ah, back to Unity

Because of the lack of tutorials in Godot, I left it. I went to construct, though, it only allows a certain amount of code, which I quickly exceeded, so, I am back to Unity, in a hope of not leaving! :)

Keyboard Cowboys Recommend... (Part 2)

keyboardcowboys.jpg

Yeeeeaaaahhhp, we figured this would happen…

Just a few days after posting our pool of recommended games to play, we discovered even more amazing games that we wish we had added to the list.

So here it is! Our final addendum to the list of some of our favorite games this Ludum Dare!

It should be noted that, unlike our previous list, many of these games have already gotten some pretty respectable attention, so if you’re going to be playing any more games before rating season is over, we highly recommend playing some games in the Danger Zone so they can qualify for a ranking after all their hard work.

Then afterwards, if you find yourself with some free time, check out these other super stellar games!

Hide and Seek

@xellaya, @ddrkirbyisq

hideandseek.jpg

Oh my god if you are even remotely a fan of horror, go play this. Hide and Seek nails that creepy and unsettling atmosphere without having to lean too heavily into obnoxious jumpscare territory. With A+++ sound design, this is definitely an underrated gem.

Smells Like Chlorine

@bas-hoogeboom, @thegreenworm

smellsLikeChlorine.jpg

This game is quite the trip. We don’t want to talk too much about it without giving anything away. Suffice it to say the devs did a great job with this one, both narratively and from an engineering standpoint. Super impressed with what these two were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time!

Chicxulub

@natpat, @archie-evans, @literal-games

chix.jpg

Chicxulub is a shoot-em-up without the shooting. You play as the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs, and wacky hijinks ensue. The art on display here is absolutely hilarious, and everything just seems to mesh super well together. This game really brings it all.

Cycle Breakdown

@thejohnyfeed

cycleBreakdown.jpg

Fans of Hotline Miami will be pleased with this one. The fast-paced, high-risk/high-reward challenging gameplay might put off some, but it will undeniably light a fire in others. This game is oozing with juice and makes you start seeing red as you deftly weave between enemies and murder everything that moves.

Bust-a-Loop

@peachtreeoath

bustaloop.jpg

It’s immediately apparent that the dev behind Bust-a-Loop is an avid fighting game fan. The game takes some fairly technical aspects of fighting games and boils them down to its core components that even the most casual of players can understand. Finding this kind of “condensed fun” is always great to see!

Space Drummer

@jrevel, @clement-feanor, @delphin-casado, @a-jeannerod, @michael-assing, @guilloteam

spaceDrummer.jpg

To those of you (like me) who thought a rhythm SHMUP could never be done, go play this game. Customizing your player ship’s loadout by mapping it to a drum beat is a truly inspired concept, and it works surprisingly well. We would love to see this expanded on in the future!

Project R.O.O.M

@arad-hamidsamiee

projectRoom.jpg

We recommend Project R.O.O.M knowing full-well that it’s not going to be for everyone. But darn it if we aren’t a fan of these surreal experimental experiences. Don’t go into this game expecting some exciting action and gameplay, but do go in expecting to feel…different by the time you finish.

Stuck in a Soup Loop

@thekingbarry, @dodidouda, @lady-stardust, @khreas, @doot

soupLoop.jpg

Cute, funny, chaotic, challenging, easy to understand, this game brings it all. Stuck in a Soup Loop is a great example of a simple idea milked for all the fun it’s worth. It never overstays its welcome, and it’s difficulty curve is surprisingly fantastic for something that likely didn’t have a lot of playtesting time to begin with. If you haven’t already, give this one a shot!

…Aaaaand that’s it! As far as ratings go, the Keyboard Cowboys are officially wrapped up with rating everyone who was kind enough to comment on our game. With a whopping 120 ratings given, we are exhausted, but we had a blast doing it.

This year we found streaming to be an absolutely fantastic way to interact with the community, and we wouldn’t have even encountered half of these games if we didn’t have that direct line of communication to many of the developers. Thanks so much y’all for making this one of the most enjoyable Ludum Dares yet! We’ll see you (hopefully) in the next one!

‘Til next time! :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Thank you for the support!

Immageee.PNG To people who played my game, Thank you for getting this game to 40 rates! I never got that much recognition before! Once again, Thank you for supporting my project!

Title Screen.PNG

With just over a day left, I have 23 ratings, but would really appreciate getting up to 30. Please play my game and put your game in the comments! You play mine, I play yours!

Itch analytics, for 8beats

I really like the way itch.io offers an easy way to track the amount of player who enjoy your games. Most of the games are hosted on itch but I've seen some other minor games hosted on different platform. I used twitch by myself for the first time and i was really impressed on how easy and useful it is.

Screenshot from 2020-10-26 11-16-44.png

Btw despite I hoped to get more players I really appreciated to have been able to makes 100 people involved in my game! Also thanks for all the feedbacks and the time spent making some good beats inside the game!

If you haven't tried yet, gave it a glimpse at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/8beats

In the end the scoring system is fun and helps for feedback but the most important part is gave people the possibility to enjoy your game, and be able to produce a little working game in just a couple of days.

I am glad I am not the only one :)

Hey everyone! I was checking the analytics from itch.io for my entry and I realized that there were 40 downloads, versus 34 votes.

I suppose I am not the only one downloading a bunch of games to try all of them and then losing the page of the entry and never finding it again :D

Thanks to everyone who found time to play, rate and give feedbacks (which, I have to say, this time were pretty consistent: the movement solution for the main character was definitely not appreciated and should be switched from a keyboard only to a mouse and keyboard)

Try our game, it's our first jam!

Feel free to try our game and leave a rating! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/once-more-through-the-desert A narrative driven game with simple gameplay.

I hope everyone had fun working on their projects, I certainly did! Many of the games were really impressive and quite unique. This is our first time, but we will probably participate next time too!

Planning to create a Steam version, who else?

My game clearly needs a lot of improvements until I can publish it. I need good UI, gameplay adjustments and more content: levels, tracks, obstacles etc. but I’m curious who else is working to finish their product? I saw a lot of good looking games and I’m wondering if I’ll see them published somewhere. What games do you think could be successful with a bit of polish and more content?

Wanna trade ratings?

It's the last day to rate! And we'd really like to round ours up. 5 or so more ratings for Woofice Chair!, our game, would be extremely appreciated! Browser, Windows, Linux and Mac builds!

Naturally, I'm up to playing your game too! Just leave me a comment here and I'll check it out! But don't forget to rate ours too! Honor system! :muscle: :whale:

How Strange

Scroll through the posts, and you'll see a million "last chance to play!" advertisements. Does anyone realize that we still have 29 hours and 35 minutes left?

Agh! Help! (In Godot)

So, this is the main scene.

Capture.PNG

I have another scene for the meteor.

This is the code.

Capture1.PNG

I want to spawn multiple of these meteors in the main scene and I don't know how.

Help me rolling in some reviews!

slide04.png

Roll your Dough one last time and leave a rating to get delicious Bagels and some political commentary! I do play and rate all games from commenters, as I was very happy with the theme and all the games you all came up with :)

Also i want to announce, that I continued work on Deep Station Fine from LD45! I was very happy with my workflow on Roll your Dough as I could give up on perfection and just draw some sprites and embraced their asymmetry. That took away many fears about animating stuff or doing big sprites. Idk why and but it opened a knot. So, Space Station Fine will still be interface and text heavy, but be way more open and less on rails, as you can freely move between locations and rooms within the ships and stations - with your friends - over the internet. The story will progress like a text adventure and the interaction are more action and point and click driven.
