Ludum Dare 46 April 17–20, 2020

Squares have more fun

squarehavemorefun.PNG

So I was just gonna warmup a bit for the next Ludum dare and somehow I got into the zone and well.. I completed a short playable full game called Squares have more fun. So I guess I'm warmed up now :)

It's a game about a square in a platform puzzle kind of game. I really enjoyed making the game and I have ideas on more content that I might work on after the next Ludum dare (or during easter).

Sorry for the small small gap in the music looping but it shows up only in the WebGL build but not in the Unity editor :(

How to play

Play with WASD and space or use an Xbox controller (On Windows 10, MacOS didn't fully work because of differnt button numbers on the controller).

Hit X to show speed run details while playing with elapsed time and deaths.

Hold R for two seconds to restart from level 1.

Play the game at: https://cloud.rhapsody.st/ld46warmup/ - WebGL

So lets have an easter competition and post your best score in the comments (if you can make it to the end)

Another "I just like discussing themes" post

So I don't want to tell anyone what to do, I just want to share my opinion and personal taste towards LD themes.

I love themes that are as ambiguous as possible and as broad as possible. Themes like "darkness", "sustainability" or "Out of scale" are really good. These can be used in so many ways in either gameplay, visuals or story. For example, "darkness" can play with literal darkness, where you play in some gloomy environment, or you can use it for a horror story. Or it can be a game mechanic where darkness is used to kill enemies with, or be killed by it. Or it can go even deeper like having darkness in your heart or soul, writing a story about depression or sadness.

No matter what theme, I know we will all have a great time next weekend!

Warmup Weekend Day 2

Yeah, I started the Warmup Weekend early.

Today I was messing around with animations and a 6 frame run cycle. Now my vikings that run across the screen in my avoidance game actually look like they are running. vikingrun.gif

Now the pillaging hordes run across the screen. vikings.gif

Feel free to join Warmup Weekend to get ready for the event next weekend! (https://itch.io/jam/ld-46-warmup-weekend)

A month ago I finished developing my personal tiny project with Gamemaker Studios 2. It's a simple top-down shooter where you play as a mage, who annihilates waves of enemies with his powerful spells. Apparently, it was my last project with GMS2 as change it with Godot. However, I still love GMS2, because it helped me to learn programming from scratch.

Hope, you'll enjoy my game.

Anybody needs a composer? (closed, i think...)

Hi! I'd like to join to a team, as a composer! (At LD46)

I also tried to be in a team before, at LD44 and Game Off 2019... But in my crowdforged teams: members left few days before the Jam even started... Recently I participated at Wowie Jam 2... I couldn't make the game alone... Even the theme was interesting...

But maybe I can make a game with a team finally! A few tracks of mine: https://soundcloud.com/theoteno

Self-promotion here on LUDUM DARE?

So guys, I would love to know what is your opinion on SELF PROMOTING here on Ludum Dare sites.

So I get that this site was made for Ludum Dare posts. So people who are scrolling the feed here are probably curious about others posts mainly about Ludum Dare, so they can get annoyed by seeing some guy promoting his game. But on the other hand, most of you are probably apart from game developing lovers, also game lovers, so the question is:

Are you willing to overlook the self-promoting posts for the sake of other people, who enjoys self-promoting posts, and like to see on which level are their competitors?

Theme Slaughter Complete :D

Slaughter.png

First time I've taken the time to go through all the themes in the slaughter, thank goodness for keyboard shortcuts.

Now do your part too and slaughter the themes!

Who would actually enjoy these themes?

[MY OPINION INCOMING, PLEASE DO NOT GET OFFENDED]

So, I know some of the ideas may sound really original and imaginative, but if the theme would win, I do not think anybody would actually enjoy making a game inspired by it. By this I mean for example these themes:

Snímek obrazovky 2020-04-10 v 19.01.20.png Snímek obrazovky 2020-04-10 v 19.08.17.png Snímek obrazovky 2020-04-10 v 19.13.41.png - This theme is literary: "Start with nothing while life is your currency". I mean who would actually enjoy this too complicated theme?

A week to go!

Planning on taking a break from my big project, Battle Pals (pictured below), to participate in the LD! Can't wait to see what people make amber showcase.gif

I'm in once again

Hey, it looks like I'm finally in for another Ludum Dare. I might be able to team up with a few people so I'm probably going to enter the jam.

Warmup Weekend Day 2 Update 2 - Title screens and tilesets

Still working on my Warmup Weekend (https://itch.io/jam/ld-46-warmup-weekend) entry to get all set for the compo.

title.gif

Focused on putting together a title screen, which I always put off and regret during the competition. I also threw together a 20 minute tileset for the background. Animated the main character and threw everything together.
tiles.png playerrun.gif I also tried loading custom fonts which worked locally but not once I uploaded it to the web, so I learned something.

Next up is saving data locally to track a high score. Then maybe some sounds and juice over the next few days.

Game is here if you want to play it: https://minibobbo.itch.io/warmup-weekend

Game Engine Comparison

GameMaker - Good for beginners, but annoys Mac & Linux people

Unity - Powerful & Easy to use

Unreal - Good for pros, brags about it's graphics in comparison to unity

Scratch - Just no

Just got finished with the slaughter! This will be my 11th LD in a row.

themeslaughter.PNG

The themes I like usually have to do with numbers (ex. 1 minute, 0, 4 colors, etc.), so those were the majority of my +1s. I started doing these jams with LD36, which was just before I entered high school. Now I'm at the end of my senior year, doing this one.

8 bit music maker progress

hello people

I am currently working on the MIDI editor for my music making app. Here are some screenshots:

3 diffrent patterns(pattern 2 is blank so there is no preview)

Any suggestions to improve the UI, feature requests or ideas for the name will be appriciated.

I will hopefully release this app for free before the jam so you can try it out. Now I'll start working on the sequencer.
