Ludum Dare 46 April 17–20, 2020

Just export your games to HTML5 if possible.

I personally see exporting your game into HTML5 game and putting it on itch.io or a different web page as an easiest way to add your game to Ludum Dare. I am a MacBook user, so I am very sad when I cannot play a nice game, just because it is only exported for Windows.

The biggest advantages of HTML5 in-browser export of a game:

  • Literary anybody who owns a computer can run the game, Mac users, Windows users and Linux users.
  • You do not need to download every single game, that you would have to delete a minute after.

Engines that can export to HTML5: (not 100% sure)

  • Unity
  • Unreal
  • Godot
  • LÖVE
  • Game Maker

So tell me guys. If you are using a game engine that is able to export your game to the HTML5 file, why would you choose not to?

Rusty, but still willing to make an effort

Haven't really worked on any game project for a long time! I neglected every single jam since the last Ludum Dare and worked little on my personal projects. Let's see if it's LDJAM that finally gets me to work again!

I like no theme and I must slaughter.

It was 81 degrees in my third floor apartment in Missouri when I finished rating this years selection of themes. Needless to say I was not forgiving in the slightest in my slaughter. I just want to say the only good joke theme was "Honey what did you do with the floating island" all the other ones that I thought where jokes were rather bland (looking at you "flOAtiNG IslANd" guy). Props to people that wanted to have a corona theme but actually rubbed there brain cells together to come up with things like virus or infection which are actually good themes and don't deserve the hate. Fun fact I went and looked back at my previous years to see how many themes I liked. In spite of having oh-most double the number of themes to slaughter this year I actually continued my trend of liking about half as many as I did last year.

also most of my yes votes are due to duplicates for gravity and of course my favorite theme to see every year :snowman:

bruh

what is up w/ all these corona themes??? Seriously guys, do you WANT us to live in fear??? Support positivity (Like the fLOatiNG iSLaNdS guy:)) In times like this, I find its best to stay positive

Music Making app progress: Instruments!!!

Finally, after finishing the MIDI Editor & Sequencer, I have made a very important feature; Instruments! Here is some test footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1zWc_jJBcc

As you can see, the fully custom envelopes will allow for a lot of customization although I will probably add some presets. Also, I will add more things to the left menu panel(like filters, panning, arpegiation maybe?). The instrument system is currently not connected to the midi system, so I will need to work on that. Any suggestions, feedback, ideas(especially for a name) are highly appriciated.

Once again, I will finish and release this app before the jam, so that I and others can use it :D

LD46 noise wallpaper

As tradition, here is a simple LD46 wallpaper, both in 1440p and 1080p. Enjoy!

I'm going 3D for the first time

Recently I've converted my procedural generated world project from 2D to 3D. What once looked like this:

ww2d_01.png

Now looks like this:

ww3d_03.png

So right now I'm experimenting with 3D in Godot to have a better understanding of the technical side. Creating low-poly meshes in Blender is easier than I thought. Now that I'm starting to get accustomed with 3D, it's not that much different from 2D to be honest. So I'll give it a go next week!

Theme Advice

While perusing the archives I came across this post that gives some advice on how to make the most of themes. Maybe some of you will find it helpful regardless of what kind of theme we end up with:

What to Do When the Theme Doesn't Work for You

Thanks go to @incobalt for this. In any case, if we end up with a "bad theme" we can fall back on the Russian proverb, "нет худа без добра" ("There is no bad without good" — make the most of what you have). Good luck to everyone.

Why was "start with nothing" chosen?

This was the theme that was voted for last LD. Chances are that some people reading this voted for it, why? Don't you start almost every game with nothing? Perhaps it was voted for because it's the least "intrusive" theme, you can just make any game and it probably fits. But doesn't that fly in the face of what a theme is meant to do, inspire innovation?

My clicker game

Good morning all, I present to you my current game project It's an idle game The presentation is on the itch.io page, do not hesitate to subscribe to follow the progress of the game :) https://gatitostudio.itch.io/cryptoinc oc+RP_.jpg

I have done it!

I kind of improvised as to what I wanted as a theme as I went along. Near the end though, I based it on which phrases sounded the coolest: the themes that were very game specific felt limiting, and I thought that a cool/interesting phrase would lead to more interesting games. I also picked some themes that were aesthetic choices, because that would tie all the games together while still having variety.

Warmup weekend

Way back in the days of yore (on the old website) we did this thing called Warmup Weekend. Well, it is back by popular demand. Actually, not popular and no demand but I'm doing it anyway and everyone I'd invited!

Test the tools! Compile the code! Make the music!

warmupweekendlarge.png

What is Warmup Weekend? Well, in the slightly edited words of PoV... pov.png

If you are looking for a place to test out your tools and make sure that other people can actually play something you created, feel free to post stuff over at the warmup jam hosted on itch.io. open until the start of Ludum Dare!

I know that literary no one cares, but...

I finally slaughtered all of the stupid themes you guys produced. I mean some of them were good, but some of the themes, I was just wondering how much the person who came with it has to be deranged. Snímek obrazovky 2020-04-11 v 20.17.12.png

I NEED A NAME!!!

Hello everyone. I was about to create the github repo for the 8 bit music app I've been making, when I realized that I needed to name the repo. This means that the time is now to pick a good name. However, I can't think of a good name. Please help.
