My First Game Jam

This will be the first time I participate in a game jam and I hope that the fact that I'm pretty young won't get in the way of my game. I wish good luck to everyone participating and happy game making to all of you in this jam and your future projects.

5 Tips to prepare you for LD

  • Update your software. It can take a while, and saves a heap of stress during the jam.
  • Re-familiarise yourself with your tools. Avoid learning engines from scratch. If there is any new updates, or if it’s simply been a while since you used it, check that it is all in working order. Check that all of your hardware is working too, I recently discovered that a windows update bunged up my drawing tablet.
  • Make a ‘default project’. Especially for bulky engines like Unity, I find that it can take half an hour to set up a blank project, with all of the packages installed, presets set up, and general quality of life things like folder hierarchy. Note that you are not allowed to start making the game, we're just setting up a blank project to work from.
  • Controversial opinion; avoid planning your game before the jam. My past two LDs, I’ve been watching the community polls, planned a game in advance, then had the theme be something unexpected. I had these perfect games in mind, that I’d been planning for days around a specific theme. Then when the theme turned out to be something different (~6th theme on the community poll!), it took hours to accept that my game ideas didn’t fit the theme and had to be scrapped. An even worse outcome is the type of game that is clearly designed around a different theme, with the actual theme shoe-horned into it.
  • Get sleep ahead of time. Everyone says to sleep normally during the jam, but when you’ve got a project you’re passionate about, it rarely happens. Instead, catch up on sleep before the jam.

Hope these tips help! Good luck to everyone :v:

holy moly a new team?!?!

ld number 5! first three were done with my rag tag team, fourth one was done with... myself. but now i have an artist! so excited to have @mateusboga with me, as well as @under-the-weather returning as the composer. so excited!

except that the themes suck -_-

LDJam45

First LD since graduating from my master's program and having free time back in my life! Looking forward to learning and hacking away.

Last LDs were #27 and #36. I'll be utilizing Unreal Engine and live streaming here: https://uecasts.com/live

My first LD for 2019

I wanted to join the April one, but couldn't get the ideas rolling the whole Saturday, so I dropped out.

This time, I'll be joining as a 2-person team. I'll probably be using Unity, as always, but I would like to apply new programming techniques to it (as much as I can manage without going over the scope) thanks to RL work.

I would also like to apply a bit more focus on sound design if time permits.

Obligatory pre-jam post

Hey, everybody!

I'm back for a 3rd Ludum Dare. And this time I'm going to be joining forces with @StinkyKitty!

I've been trying to get them to participate for a while now, so this is pretty exciting. We aren't the best at this, but we'll definitely do our best!

Tools

  • Engine: Godot
  • Graphics: Aseprite, and Affinity Designer/Photo if we end up needing something other than fancy pixels
  • Music: LMMS
  • Version Control: Git

And if we ended up needing something 3D for some weird reason, Blender.

Best of luck in the Jam everybody. Can't wait to get started!

Edit: Oh! And for sounds we'll probably use Audacity with our Blue Yeti mid, and sound effect generators such as "ZzFX", "sfxr", and "ChipTone".

WebXR + ECS!?

Delving into a newborn stack, here's hoping :fingers_crossed:

Here we go, here we go!

This will be LD numero seven for me; and I am looking forward to creating a terrible game with my team mates!

We'll be using the Godot Engine, which I have (personally) grown very much of fond of-- and a few other tools, depending. It's likely going to be a 2D game; maybe the last 2D game I do because of the fabulous 3D updates coming to Godot which will make it more viable for 3D.

The only thing that will stop me submitting a game, regardless of how terrible it may be, is natural disaster or death. I hope I didn't jinx myself!

Of course, I'll be streaming on and off over the weekend, you can catch up with me on Twitter, Twitch, etc.

If you will be streaming Ludum Dare, or game dev in general on Twitch, drop your link in my comments so I can follow you! :)

First Time Participating!

Finally decided to take the plunge into one of these! I'm really excited to see what everyone comes up with and test myself as a developer. I've done little things here and there, but I've never managed to get myself to "complete" anything. Hope I can shake that bad habit off with this!

Best of luck! ^_^

Probably in

I've done a few of these before, but skipped a few either because I didn't care for the theme or I didn't have enough time. I should be able to do this one. I'll be using Unity, Photoshop, Visual Studio Code, Bfxr, Audacity, and Blender if I decide to do 3d. Good luck everyone! :)

Edit: Not looking like I'll be able to do this one, see ya next time.

Back to jamming!

I've skipped out on way too many Ludum Dares and want to get back into the swing of things. I'll be repping the Kotlin/libGDX world once again! Looking forward to pushing my comfort zone.

A final reminder before the event :)

INVITE: https://discord.gg/9DrcQmg

Hey guys for many of you, you are already present in the server so thank you for 3,200 members. Zack and I couldn’t have imagined what this would become almost 3 years later.

From ideas to sharing your final game there a channels to talk about all aspects of the event. Discord is the best platform for sharing things fast and keeping up to date on Ludum Dare.

Use !timeleft to see relevant times.

We also have a few channels to help check put our LD resource channel for helpful tools.

We love the community that has formed and counties to grow. Feel free to check out the server and introduce yourself. Can’t wait to see you there!

I'm in!

This will be my first time actually participating in LD, I think I voted on themes once then forgot when it was starting and missed out.

Tools I'll be using: - C# in Unity - Blender for modeling/animation - Substance Designer for materials - Some kind of free Photoshop alternative for 2D if needed, I'll figure it out - Bosca Ceoil for drafting music, might record if it fits and there's time - Audacity + mouth for sounds effects - Nespresso + mouth to keep the spirit alive

I'll also be doing the Compo for the premium Ludum Dare experience.

Let's rock!

We're In!

There are three of us.

One soundtrack composer/audio engineer. One software engineer/CAD expert. One hyper-talented voice actor.

None of us have released a game before, except this which we did in three hours to practice: http://meatball.solutions/irl-run

Here's the plan: if we make it sound good enough, the medium-quality everything else will seem like a fun gimmick.

We're stoked. Pray for us.

I'm in

I haven't been on top of everything as much as I should've been, I missed theme suggestions for example, but nevertheless I'm hyped. Doing it by myself, using Unity, Paint.NET and possibly Blender, but I'll probably change my mind like 20 times.

Last spook before LD45

Halloween is on the way, This is my last update before the ludum dare start, preparing myself for the rush :v: Good luck to everyone!

I'm in.

Long time no see, I last participated back in 2014 in LD30. Last year I picked back up my entry INVERTED to fix and reupload it to Newgrounds (As the old unity web plugin died and lost my itch.io account.) This got me back on working on some small projects and I think I'm ready to jump back in on the jam. Gonna be using unity, C#, paint.net, audacity, and if I'm feeling spicy Blender.

I'm in.

It's been a while, but I'm in. Here's hoping I can shake off the rust and make something to be proud of.

As usual I'll be using Unity, C#, Audacity, and Photoshop. If my concept permits, I'd love to give Yarn a shot, too.

Good luck everyone!

One Hour Compo warmup soundtrack!

Every time Ludum Dare rolls around I like to warm up during One Hour Compo by challenging myself to make an entire soundtrack* in a single hour.

I've really been feeling the Mega Man-style 2A03 vibes lately, so I decided to try and make a Mega Man-like soundtrack this time. There are 5 tracks total!

Stream all 5 tracks as a single video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SwMFRRJto8

Note that this is all "fakebit" (there's no way that I can work in FamiTracker this quickly or efficiently)

You can also check out the hour-long live "process" video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWO4MUaTz7c

I've got my repo forked on bitbucket and I've put in the last few things I need in my starter code! The only things left to do are catch up on a lot of sleep and do a bunch of groceries...

Remember kids, the theme always sucks (TM) so just roll with it when the inevitable happens ;)
