Theme is out there and it is "start with nothing"
Hmm weird theme. I mean it is actually quite flexible. Maybe far too flexible. Ok now I will sleep on it. Maybe I can dream about it. See you later people.

I'm seriously considering it...
It sure is clever of the LD folks to pick the worst theme; that way nobody has their game planned out in advance and everyone is equally disappointed.
Get ready for a bunch of Terraria clones
I've been waiting 5 Ludum Dares for this!
SURVIVAL IT IS!!!

So far I am quite nailing the theme (means no idea at all). What about you guys?
the theme is "Start with nothing" im thinking a game were levels become more visible the further you play through it??? idk still brain storming
It's been years since I liked a theme. Since I am not a student anymore but a PHD student I have all my weekend. I am so excited to do some game containing AI/evolution and stuff like that.
Good luck to everyone. :)
i have had idea for this and 3 other themes for 3 days already, i won't have much time as we are moving soon and blah blah blah
Anyway if my friend will join me i will be happy, software i will use is Unity 2019.3f1 Some pixel art editor Bfxr for sfx and probably my piano for music
I'm going for something like survival apocalypse game
ASDASDasd
Hey! Im excited to be participating in my first Ludum Dare ever! Im only doing the Jam and not the compo unless i have a lot of progress in the first two days. I wish you all luck on your own games and if you would like to watch live, i will be streaming a majority of the jam here: https://youtu.be/AzmgkBzNlrI :)

It doesn't say YOU have to start with nothing. It could be the world, the enemy, someone you're supporting or anything else you can think of.
We're 3 coworkers at a software company in OKC and we set up at our office and game jam all weekend!
Yeah boi, Creator of famous * PLAG * will blow up dis party dancefloor !!!!!

I started with nothing. In fact I still have nothing.
I was kind of hoping for this theme, despite having absolutely no semblance of an idea.
Definitely not taking the 'survival' route. Seems a bit of a low-hanging fruit. Good luck, everyone!
Coming along well I think.

This is my 17th LDjam! Here's some of my previous entries!
Have fun everyone <3

"Start from nothing." Hmm. Not my first choice for theme, but could be an interesting one. I don't currently have any ideas, I'll see where I'm after I have dinner. I'll chronicle my ideas here. Today will mostly be whiteboard and notebook idea-crafting for me, if I make any interesting progress there I'll post it. Have fun jamming, everyone!
Rough start, but I think I have an idea
Maybe I'll be lucky enough to dream up a game idea. 😴
I've got a handful of different ideas on how this could go, just need to figure out which is most likely to lead to fun gameplay while being something I can actually implement.
Lots of games have you start with nothing. This could be anything from mario to fallout to minecraft. "Start with nothing" isn't a theme, it's a condition.
Anyways, as for my game idea, I'm thinking of doing a roguelike. Permadeath means every playthrough you start with nothing. I'll try to add another twist to enhance the "theme", and for my #eggcrew bros out there I'm gonna work an egg into the game.
But first I gotta do my homework lol. Applied Combinatorics, then game dev
Edit: Another idea I got is rags to riches, like some kinda business simulator where you start with nothing and work your way towards becoming a mogul. If anyone wants this idea it's yours.
I've created this idea but it is out of the scope of what I can possibly do alone in 72 hours.
The Inequality arena
Multiplayer game where one person starts with all the wealth and the rest start with 0. The game ends after a set time or once a certain goal is achieved. The idea is that the unwealthy players try to steal away money from the rich guy. Once the money has distributed over everyone equally the game becomes a FFA. The win conditions are somewhat vague because you need to playtest and shizz. Id add some political sauce on it like making playable characters like Donnald J Flurp.
Add my discord if you wana know some more info and if you feel like you can get it done :P
TaaBoo#6173
I always think my idea is brilliant at first and then realize it is not that brilliant at the middle of the jam... But this time it's different, i really loved this idea
Here's some initial sketches:

Hiya, it's Nic and Brieyh'leai, we are in yet again!!!
We are gonna be going to be Ludum Dare again this year, except this time we are actually going to be competing in two different game jams at once, a university jam called Chillennium that we are actually on site for.
Here is the chillennium website! Chillennium

Twitter - Nic Brieyh'leai
Twitch - Brieyh'leai
Itch - Gumboot
Tools: Unity, Maya, Photoshop, 3D Coat, LMMS, Audacity, Visual Studios, Github, and Trello
Since I had urge to make something about cute girls, does this theme suggest that now I should make something about naked cute girls?

Come join me at https://www.twitch.tv/megacryptid54
I made a tiny warm-up game in 2-3 hours while waiting for the theme announcement: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=35550

Have an idea to make a dungeon crawler in which the player starts with no stats. Had a long day, so going to get some rest. Best of luck, have fun!
I'm joining again for Ludum dare. Last time I completed a game for LD was 41. I'm liking this theme so hopefully I can make a playable game in the next 48 hours. I will be doing the compo.
My tools will be:
Engine: My own engine on top of Kha in haxe.
Art: Affinity Designer.
Sound: Bfxr.
Good luck everybody. Looking forward to playing awesome Ludum dare games next week!

"How am I supposed to make a game out of that--"

"....you know what? I might just have an idea."
Seeing as it's now 23:30 here I'll leave the actual programming to tomorrow, but I'm very happy with my idea. Let's just say that I take the whole "starting with nothing" a little too literally...

Very excited to participate in another Ludum Dare! Second time I've got my partner in crime (@koalaura) with me ;)

It's been a while since I last took part in Ludum Dare at least in any "official" manner.
The beginning is certainly very much in the theme's spirit, but other than that, we'll have to let time tell its story.

This theme seems like it should be really easy (and it is) but I hate everything about it. Every single game is built on this theme, you start with nothing and gain things as you go. I don't want to do that, I need something more creative/abstract to do with this theme.
Am I complaining? A bit perhaps. I have lots of ideas but they are just games, they're not centered on this theme and I really want to do something that builds on the theme.
-End of rant
EDIT: Complaining is all it took… I have an idea but it may be too ambitious. We’ll see.
I was so scared of this theme as I thought I couldn't have any ideas for this but as soon as it was announced, I got an idea that I instantly loved :ok_hand: Prepare for some horror :skull:
Oh my god I finaly have a good idea! It works very well with the theme, too! Ahh, I'm so relieved!
Theme: Start with nothing
Hey everyone, I was waiting for that ludum dare after missing the three last ones. The theme already give me inspiration, can't wait to start drafting ideas!
I'll be working with Unity, probably try the new universal render pipeline and with 3DS Max and Photoshop. Nothing for the sound yet as i'm used to not having time to add any in my LD games.
I have a page of ideas but no good ones....
I'm a little tempted to really make a game "from scratch" and start by typing 1s and 0s into a hex editor, create a simple assembler, and see if I can at least get an interactive bouncing ball on the screen before the weekend is out...
Start with nothing, end with nothing. I dunno, a game were you become powerful and then have it stripped from you.
I don't think it will be an original interpretation of the theme, but I hope the game will be cool!
For us, it's time to go to sleep.
Tomorrow, we'll try to implement base function of the game and make some sound design. Sound will be important for our project.
I can't wait to show you some little things.
I'm starting this LD with my own game engine

The game engine (Overload): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARXSJh-ZMHM
I think I have a starting point for my idea (No pun Intended) but it's incredibly abstract and I'm struggling to get it into a game format.
Relying on my subconscious coming up with something AMAZING whilst I sleep. See you all tomorrow, when I'll start writing ... something.
Have started reminiscing about old game-like things I wrote and the theme of starting from nothing. I'm braianstorming in a log file that you can access on the development repository on https://github.com/hendrikboom3/LudumDare45/ if you wish. Will update from time to time, even before there's any code.
Comments and ideas welcome.

good luck to everyone, youll get a idea soon
It's a thing I tried to make before but didn't have the knowledge to. Not exactly very original but I think it'll be fun.
Obviously. Now to turn that into a game...
You wake up in an unknown place, dressed only in rags. You have no money, tools or weapons on you, and you remember... nothing.
The objective of the game, set in a fantasy world, is to uncover the truth behind why you lost your memory, and find your way back into your previous life. The main game mechanics will be about decision making, balancing time vs risk. You will also need to manage food, sleep and warmth as resources to stay alive. Ideally the game will have different endings depending on your decisions.
Let's do this!
I'm joining with me, myself and I ♪... I have a few ideas but no really good ones so it's time to go sleeping. Have a nice start mates!
I hope I have an idea and I will finish the game on time
Good luck to everyone
Thought of this clip... start off with nothing.
I think I am down for the jam, I am going to create a game where you start off with no items. Horror based maybe... mess around with unity snaps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySGMnmiqlss
Used a game generator I quickly made to get me started.
Came up with this:
Never made a city builder before, excited to do this.
Naturally didn't want to make a side view city builder, you could just dont feel like being locked on the z axis haha. Lets go people!
Does using reference images and other people's sprites/code to see how things work, count as cheating? Just wanted to make it is okay to do that as this is my first ever game jam
Do I need to declare what I am making?
But I desperately need to chill out, as a game designer in game jams I look for some inspiration and challenges, but this theme is a pretty usual thing in my work because a good game progression is based on 'start with nothing'. Nonetheless, I'm not going to give up; I have a fun concept which I want to make in these three days.
Anyway, good luck and have fun!
https://www.twitch.tv/inkajoo/ :owl:
some scribbles & notes to wrap up hour 1; just piecing together what i'm gonna do for this thing and have a pretty good idea at this point, gonna involve cats.

join Ludum Dare 45...
Come brainstorm with me on Twitch! :D
https://www.twitch.tv/drrozza

let the the fun begin! Good luck everyone
What are your thoughts on using Open Source Map data and displaying that creatively in game? Would that data qualify as existing content and thus make the game ineligible for compo?
As usually I will play with the word of the theme. I already got an idea for a pun, but i'm totally missing any clue for the gameplay.
Is 1:00 Am here so is time for me to go to sleep and hope to wake up with a clearer mind.
I should use:
- Unity 3D WebGL
- C# / Visual Studio
- UModeler
- Bfxr / Audacity
Happy weekend to all ;)
Decided to join kinda impromptu, here's hoping I can make something good!
The Taoists says like this:"Tao starts in zero, and then it becomes one, and then it becomes two, and then it becomes everything." Hope to be useful:)
So far, I have a written plan, a story, an index of images needed (thank god for color variations), a running list of sounds inside my head (get to that last), and a very clear image in my head of the final product. Godot is up and running and the player base settings are set. Placeholder images have been made. Soon on to level building and pregame logic.
First dinner with family and move night before bath time and bed. Well bed for everyone else, for me... designated programming time.
Well, let's start with nothing but character.

... I got nothing yet. But I'm only starting. So I guess it's ok.
By the way, I'm in.
Good luck everyone, have fun.
Been a while, since LD42 I believe.
Tools - Art: Aseprite - Language: JS - Framework: Phaser3 - Music/SFX: Not sure...
Happy with the theme. But first, coffee :coffee:
-You are a knapsack with an empty inventory. You have no arms, because you are a bag. Go around and try to get people to pick up and put things into you.
For the theme of "Start with nothing" I didn't have to think long before I got a decent enough idea to work with, the challenge will be the scope.
My game will feature the player starting with nothing, as in no equipment, and there will be a time limit to get equipment and face a challenge.
Simple enough.
I got the skeleton of the project laid out, now to get a player running around.
Hello Everyone!
I'm in and I'm bringing some friends!
I've been doing Ludum Dare now for many years now, I've participated in 14 events, going as far back as LD27! Lately I haven't been able to participate. Hoping to put something special together this time.
We'll be using the following tools:
We've got an idea already which is great! hoping to have a prototype together soon!
Good luck everyone, and most importantly have fun! :v:
The theme this time is great! My brain's flooded with ideas and I can't wait to get going on a prototype.
2 h on first LD game ... good progress so far: bacteria is growing (out of nothing) and spreading already. hopefully i will find enough time over the weekend, but now it is time for a sleep.
Hello there! It is Ludum Dare season once again and our team, "Toda Studios" is working on putting together an entry for LD45!

For anyone that wants to hangout and chat with us and others during the jam, come join our discord!
Actually the theme is great, created post with this title just to follow the tradition. You know.
So much ideas and brainstorming that I can't sleep even though it's almost 3am in Helsinki!

I'm pretty excited about this, being my 5th in a row especially! Feel free to stop by my stream!! I will be streaming game play post jam as well, so stay tuned I will make a sign up sheet for that!
https://www.twitch.tv/zombievirals
Still not sure how I want to go about this theme
Maybe I already fullfilled it since my project has a pitch black splash screen! It starts with nothing
In any case, I made this little friend during the last hour so I wouldn't feel so bad among the nothingness.

I posted something earlier, now where is it?
I saw the theme and it actually quite flexible! If you think about it, almost every game is like this. (you have no cool weapons and then you get them) I already got an idea and can start coding now!
Wait. How did I find myself coding a faux text adventure engine in PICO-8 as a part of this whole thing anyway?
It makes sense, I swear it does, but... yeah. didn't see this coming. At all. Huh. Neat.
Anyway. 15m break. Stretching legs, making tea. Writing up some quick docs to capture the ideas. Hope everyone's having a blast!
I've got a morning of lecturing ahead of me, but once that's done, I'll be starting to work on my very first Ludum Dare project. Dare I say, it'll be perfect, or perfectly stupid. Something along those lines.
