Hotel Escape — Finished!

I didn’t have much time this weekend, so I decided to go for a short, simple game. Run around and avoid the spikes, that kind of thing. You can download it here.

Submitted!

So that’s my first Ludum Dare complete! :)

I’m happy with what I made, even if I ran out of time for sound & balancing. So it’s silent, and either ridonkulously easy or hard (I literally have no idea. I can breeze through, but then I’m just a tad biased.)

Anyway. I hope it’s fun, or at least interesting :)

Based on those times when words escape you, when they feel like they’re on the tip of your tongue.

(It’s also a Text-Adventure/Platformer hybrid :D)

I had a great time doing this, it was really nice to have some focus for a project!

So yeah! Sleep now. :)

Generating a random map for my game

I’ve dabbled with this a bit in the past, using a grid to randomly generated rooms in a 2d game.

I used a very overly complicated process before, I started with a two dimensional grid and I converted each room into a symbol that stood for a different type of room, then when I tunnel through that room, converted it into another variable ie “T” = a room with only a top wall, and X would be a room with no walls etc…

I completely scrapped that idea this time around! And I couldn’t be happier about it.  Instead I made a 3 dimensional array of bools.  two dimensions for X / Y (or x / z as it is in unity) of the map, and then the 3rd held 5 bools, one for floor, and then one for each wall.  North / East / South / West etc.  I then start up with a new array that is all false, start off somewhere, and start tunneling my way one section at a time. I made a function that will go from one tile to a next, if there is no floor, it generates all the walls + floor, and then it breaks down walls connecting the two rooms.   I found this so much easier than my old method, as I didn’t have to make a ton of cases to handle changing different rooms.

Also this time, I made a system that adds on some branches after the first tunneling function runs . I look for a random tile that has a floor, then I check for any tiles next to it that have no floors, put each result with no floor into a hastable, and then randomly choose one of those to move to- and continue doing that to make some winding tunnels that go until they get stuck, which added some very nice variation to the maze.  The best part about this system, is I’m pretty sure I could easily make  a 3 dimensional maze by just adding one more bool and dimension to the array and changing the randomization around a bit, which I will most likely try out sometime in the future.

Escape from Planet 21

Wow, this server is clogged. I was going to post more than this but I’ll offload what I can to my server.

Here’s the lobby screen, which doubles as the instructions and more or less covers the story and theme:

lobby screenshot

The game was made in Unity. A third party GUI interface (GUIX) helped with what GUI there is. Models were done in Blender, textures and mattes in a combination of Painter and Photoshop, music (such as it is) in Renoise, sound effects with the Mac-implemented CFXR utility linked on this site. Scratchy graphics are accomplished with one of the filters built into Unity. The font is Laserjerks, by the excellent Typodermic foundry.

I’m just wrapping up bugs and polish at this stage, but this was super fun (it’s my first time).

More details and less lag are at our own site.

All done

I’ve just finished my mulitiplayer roguelike, Lost in the Depths.

Making this one multiplayer was an interesting experience, but unfortunately I couldn’t fix some of the lag issues. I was also hoping to make an offline-only version but ran out of time. I just hope there aren’t too many connection issues.

The Great Escape RPG (TGERPG)

This was my first time competing in Ludum Dare, and I spent most of the time trying to learn java. I finally gave up on that briefly, and spent 2 hours making this game. It’s not all that good, and I never got around to putting in any RPG elements other than having variables for strength and dexterity….which were never really used in game, only increased a bit on level up. I tried to make it funny, but to each his own. Hopefully by next time, I will know enough about java to make a game with it. 😀

Escape from Monster City: Submitted!

After the last few hectic hours of finalizing everything, I finally submitted my game, Escape from Monster City!

The game’s homepage contains links to every version you could want- windows, linux, mac, applet, jar, webstart, as well as the source.

I’m really looking forward to playing everybody’s games as well as getting feedback on my own. This was my first Ludum Dare, and I had a lot of fun!

Now I should probably go eat…

Boingo’s Escape – Complete!

Yes folks, in under 26hrs… actually < 16hrs (because I had sleep during this period) I was able to complete the challenge using GM 8.1 Light [gack]. All content in the game is original and done by me except for the sound effects and background music which are under a free license. It’s more or less a side-scroller with a few platfomer-ish features.

The storyline is about a cute little sheep called “Boingo” who jumped the fence and decided to wander out on his own, unknowingly falling into the trap of evil wolves waiting outside. In order to get free, he has to escape wolves, birds,  and various obstacles. Featuring 5 levels with lush graphics! The entire work is released under Creative Commons 3.0 Unported. Art will be posted to OpenGameArt shortly so others can benefit from my work. I’ll also make a mention of it over at my website.

You’ll need 7zip (who doesn’t have this now-a-day?) to open the file. My internet is dog slow, compression is a must. 😛

Enjoy! 😀

Hi, works flawlessly on a ZTE Blade running CM7 (android 2.3) :)

Finally Finished!!

I didnt have much time to do Ludum this time but I did finish on time some how. I’ve been busy with soccer, work, and other things. When I first saw the theme that was picked I didnt know what to do. After some thought i decided to base it off of my first game I ever made (The father’s Day Scramble).  A game where you only use your arrow keys to move away from kids. I took the same idea and transferred it to aquatic properties and thus A Underwater Escape was born. This game (made by netGlow Games) features without a doubt, escape (just look at the title). You are a person, almost a child’s face that moves around the screen escaping sharks and harpoons. I could only add two because I didnt have enough time. While the game progresses, more sharks start to appear and everything gets more fast paced. You also have coins that increase your score through out the game. The objective is to get the highest score. If you get hit by an enemy then you go back to the title screen where you can submit your score or look at your achievements. YES! I did say achievements! Be # 1 on the scoreboard and play now at sites.google.com/site/netglowgames/.

Images will not upload now so I cant put anything up :/

McPixel saved the day once again!

Yes yes yes! I have a game that is actually finished and finishable :) I am trying to relate it to not being drunk the entire weekend, but it’s probably just a coincidence.

So where’s my checklist…
1. Prepare a framework for rapid level creationcheck! – Entire first day I designated to creating a framework so that I could create levels like mad on Sunday. I managed to do it, and level creation was done 90% using GraphicsGale. All the gags are animated frame-by-frame, and items are loaded from a color-keyed map.

Example of gag animation

Example of item map:

2. Create levels like madyup! – I was making levels the entire Sunday, I wanted to have 16, then 8, but I end up with 6. Good enough! Anyways my plan was to have a ready game on the first day, so that i will just do as many levels as possible.

3. Have witty puzzlesdud! – Well… my brain wasn’t really prepared for that, and I can truly say that I blessed McPixel with a secret mission to facepalm the player to death.

4. Cool websiteweee! – HTML 3.0 + CSS is just awesome!

Try it! and let me know what do you think!

Ludum Dare Entry!

I “finished” the Ludum Dare with 50 minutes to spare!  The levels I finished aren’t super polished and the controls are still wonky, but overall I’m happy with the results.  Screens below:

Have fun with it !

Delivered!

Finally! It has been fun and not great fun (at the same time).
My game is “done” and delivered. Don’t know if I’ll add levels and features to this game. Let’s see how will it turn out.

Meanwhile, I am “compiling” my timelapse into an avi. I’ll post in Youtube as soon as it is done.

Check my entry here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=preview&uid=5344

Hope you enjoy it! Please leave a comment after testing (either positive or negative, as long as you are honest =P).

The Blueprints have been filed

That does it for LD21. My entry, The Blueprints, is now history.  I feel good about it, aside from how bad the title screen looks in the thumbnails. Also  I wanted more than two levels, but creating these things takes time. Check it out here.
