I need more Practice.
I’ll be back in Ludum dare 23. I’m going to practice more before I participate next time.

I just set up my very basic flash file in flash cs5.5 and documented with camtasia, now it’s time plan the game. The theme was announced as “Alone”, thank God it wasn’t freakin kittens. Once I figure out how to Rougelike an alone game then tomorrow it’s off to start building some classes and coding in the basic game.
Some Thoughts:
So I just found out the theme is alone. I have no clue what to do. Nevertheless, I am going to try anyway! I have an idea so I’m going to try anyway!
Wish me luck!

Okay, well, that’s the spirit of Ludum Dare Classic, but also the theme.
Interesting, I suppose – taking elements from an JRPG with a party combat system and putting them into a solo game. Irony, I suppose, but I think I can make this work.
Got my folder system setup now:
And thinking of doing a shadowy-style game – mostly thinking of making the enemies shadows. Or making the player a shadow in a world full of light, but I’m not fully sold on that one – don’t want to make this too Limbo-y-like.
Anyways, that’s my plan. Just finished setting up Flash now, so working on getting some symbols down.
What I do know so far as a plan:
Background: Pale Yellow, lighting mechanics light up yellow sections to brighter yellow, possibly four levels of brightness, actually:
Black: Shadow Monsters all around (If non-shadow self, else no one here, and ignore the rest of this statement), really sluggish, but really powerful, and really hard to destroy – also hard to see them. Main character in this case would be fastest he can be, weaker than anything else in here, and can be seen very clearly. May be implemented just using really slow slowdown for enemies, as that let’s the player still maintain control of their character. Light Monsters blindingly fast, really, really weak though, and very easy to spot;
Dark Pale Yellow: Shadow Monsters regular speed, still relatively strong, easy to see, main character is slightly less faster, doesn’t stand out as much Light characters regular speed, not quite as weak as before.
Light Pale Yellow/Pure White: Vice Versa, more or less.
Bit ugly for a light/dark theme, but I haven’t really fully decided on the character.
If I have monsters on both sides, perhaps making him the lone person able to trascend both areas, and he’s collecting pieces of each world to…I dunno, unite them? Kind of shaky, but if I do that, then I want to add an effect where you become part of the area’s type if you stay there too long…and have some sort of dynamic lighting with light switches or such.
Haven’t quite thought that too far yet, but something along those lines.

On the aside, however:
You can always find me on Twitter during the event, I’d think.
But also, checking out Google Hangouts right now, so if you want to drop by, it should be here:

Let me know if this link doesn’t work.
I’ve been jamming out an idea with my boys called Always Alone set across a person’s life in 4/5 scenes. Will be programming in Monkey. Going to prototype first with squares whilst my kids make the graphics.
Wish me luck!
So the theme of my first Ludum Dare is alone. I, like many consider my self more of a programmer than an artist. In fact, like many programmers I consider art to be a foreign and strange land which has very little connection to me. I can’t draw.
The problem is that alone is a very atmospheric theme at first brush. Isolation, a mood of silence and melancholy. These tend to require at least some artistic chops. I have decided to take a different route. In my game the player will take control of everything. Their characters, the enemies. The player is truly alone, there are only game rules and not even an ai though it is a single player game. However, there is another element to fit the theme. Despite controlling multiple characters who need to work together if any of the characters enter the same room… they DIE!
They must support each other from afar, never coming together. They are working as a team. They are combining their skills. But they are…. Alone.
And here is some of the artwork. I’m using Alchemy to create highly stylised graphics. That way the fact that I can’t draw doesn’t matter as much.

I’m getting started a bit late… got caught up in an important meeting at Occupy Tallahassee. Alone is the theme, eh? …I kind of hate it. We had “It’s dangerous to go alone…” only 2 LDs ago! Ah well, I’ll work with it regardless!
Just realized I forgot to state what tools I’m working with here! This LD, like my previous two, will be completed with Python, using PyGame, for all programming. For sfx I’ll probably use bfxr, though last time I also used a cheap mic and made some crude noises of my own. Music will probably not exist. Art is MS Paint, with the possibility of some minor Gimp work of I want to get fancy. That should be about it! I did ABSOLUTELY NO PREP for this, so I have almost no food or drink in my house, and many other inconveniences. GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Brute force game design!
Good luck everybody!
Man, we are on the first few hours of working, and already this is really fun. Not only have we been working on our own project, but also looking at and following people posting. It looks as if there are going to be a lot of great projects in the works, and I can’t wait to see some of the competition shape up.
When we started our game, our team decided upon a simple game, with a complex mechanic. While in theory the game will be feasible to make, we really have to rack our brains in order to make it really fun. A simple puzzle platformer, though there is a bit of a twist with there not really being any real ground to stand on. We’ll share more about this over a few days I suppose. Already worked through the main character, a few scenery pieces, a bit of the programming, and some level design.
This is our first game jam, so I hope we are doing fine. I have a feeling that projects are going to start coming out that are going to mop the floor with us, but I welcome them and hope for the best. I am really having fun with this.
Well I might as well leave you with a tidbit more than just a poster that I whipped up. Perhaps we can get some reception on our main character. It really would be lovely to get some feedback.
Alone is an interesting theme and i have a pretty good idea time to get to work
awwww yeah its time to get my dare on
my game will be about a kitty anyway
tools
Stencyl
Gimp
Bfxr
Well, need to start somewhere with the platform. Thinking about a platform type game actually…
So, looking at using the Platform example from the XNA App Hub as a basis and ripping out the graphics and of course adding 5 other layers on top.
Actually, wondering if I want to do a Jam and give myself a bit of extra time… but I’ll see where I’m at by tomorrow night…
Been at work for about half-an-hour developing an idea for the ‘Alone’ theme. Basically, I think I’m going to play the dinosaur card. The premise is simple, you’re the last dinosaur left (aliens are raining asteroids from the sky to try and kill you but won’t become extinct so easily). Basic shmup game, possibly with some beat’em up action if your plane gets shot down. Here’s the pixel art I’ve got so far.
Interesting theme… Interesting theme indeed. I think I may end up using Construct for this one, though if I get that done fairly quickly, I’ll start writing the XNA version of the game.
Mainly, there’s a lot of art and music I want for this game, and I really want that to shine more than anything else. Me being a terrible artist.. well… needs time…
Livestream will be at http://www.livestream.com/edibletoaster
Woot!
My idea is not clear yet, but I will definitely make something about someone getting trapped in some sort of cave, trying to literally survive down there. This means :
– no enemy,
– no one to help,
– you need to find food, water, a safe place to sleep..etc.
– you may craft a few useful tools for your survival needs.

Been working all week, did not get an “I’m in!” video. Oh well. I am, in reality, in.
I missed last time, but I got the weekend off and I am set… cept my main comp is wrecked, so I’m building this on my laptop. Which is what I did the first time… so again, oh well.
I shall once again be using Unity.
Along with that I’ll be using:
– Photoshop
– Frootyloops… I don’t know why I bother, but maybe I’ll get something out of it.
– Notepad and stuff
– EZSprite… I’m linking just to show it’s a thing, and as for the rules, I’m pretty sure it fits… /shrug
I don’t want to show a pic of my work area cuz it’s embarrassingly messy. Instead, I’m putting a picture of ME… with an Empire temp tattoo.
I am doing a pixel art side-scroller for LD22 and wanted some input on a setting. Should my game be within –
A) foreign world
B) war zone
C) post-apocalyptic city
D) abstract inner-mind
E) something else
Let me know what you think. Also, you can follow my progress on twitter @mortalitygames

Well, this will be my second Ludum Dare, but hopefully my first finished game.
I’ll be using HTML5/Canvas and these tools:
GEdit
Paint.net
And probably jsfx for sound (http://egonelbre.com/js/jsfx/)
I’ll also be using a small framework/engine I made the other day for simple things like sprite drawing and animating.
(this is available here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1054134/LD22/LD22.7z – 2.9kb)
Good luck everyone!
