LD22 December 16–19, 2011

It works :D

After spending more than an hour trying to make my sprite rotate and animate in flixel, it finally works!

The game doesn’t have much now, just a ship flying through space and a nice starfield. Here’s a screen:

You can play what I have so far here:

If you want a really nice starfield, you can try toying around with FilterForge (Free 30 days trial).

Progress update on Squido:DNLBA

I added power-ups, background music, sound effects and sharks!

Total time in: +- 9 hours

So the Quebarium crew is bringing their keyboards to play some synth pop music of the 80'.

Ohhhh wait, this is not that kind of "Jam"... ;-).

Of course we know about that, so this morning the first thing is the agenda is to reach
@fcycles and @tronicsynth and get their inputs for ideas and if they have time to provide
some times (either to do code, music, graphics).

Yup it's me @frederictessier "alone" that decided to bring them a long in my madness ahahaha ;-p
(hope they won't be mad at me LOL), anyway they have still 2 days to give me their answer.
Maybe the first thing today would be to introduce the 3 members of Quebarium for people
that doesn't know us.

Enemies!

I now have some enemies. Yay!

SHAPED: A Warrior’s Tale

Okay, it’s just called “Shaped” but it will still be awesome. You play as various shapes and fly around a 2.5 D environment to find other similar shapes. Stay away from other shapes that aren’t like you though, you may get pwned.

Good luck everybody!

FilterForge’s 30 days trial

So the question is this: If I created a texture using it and my trial isn’t over yet, may I use this or is it protected by some FilterForge agreement?

The texture has already been uploaded to their website some time ago -> http://filterforge.com/filters/10168.html

Starting to work, or am I too late?

Just learned about the ludum dare, and why not give it a shot?

I will be working with Gamemaker, and god knows what else, I will find out along the way and post.

Idea is set, ready to start developing. Let’s consider this a test post for the time being.

Concept

We have an idea for a concept! Unfortunately, I’m busy this morning, so I can’t do much work on it. After lunch, though, we will refine our concept and start working! I have my coding environment all set up, and pixelcake’s ready to do some spriting. He already has done some music for our game.

Even though we weren’t really able to utilize this morning, we’re still going to have a ton of fun and make an awesome game. Lucky for you, though, we can only enter in the Jam, so our game won’t pwn yours. Jk.

1 hour in…

And things are going very well! Player is created, plus his bullets and the walls.

First, I drew some basic letters to serve as temporary sprites for the objects in game. I then got to work on the player. I created the four relevant objects and programmed in their behaviours. I then made the bullets for the player’s gun. Once again, four objects created and programmed. I tested it. Shots and movement worked beautifully. Sound effects made improved the mood.

Player can walk and shoot in all directions!

I then discovered that after some movement improvements, my player now spawned shooting upwards at maximum speed. I created a fifth object, programmed its stuff and stuck it into the player’s programming. That fixed it.

The patching up process

I then decided to add some walls and mess about with them. After programming, I started a test. I discovered something alarming. Despite my best efforts, neither the player nor the bullets were effected in the slightest by walls. They just went through them. I worked quickly to patch it up.

The player is done (except that he still looks like a "P")!

And that’s what I’ve got done! Next is some enemies, then proper art, then level design, story stuff etc. At the rate I’m going, I may decide to stick in Multiplayer or powerups. Stay tuned!

First attempt at ludum dare, had pretty much no base code – lack of preparation, didnt even have anything to load PNGs with at the start! still pleanty left to do…

Theme is pretty interesting. Look forward to seeing other peoples creations :)

WBE at around 50% time left

Can walk around, and click on things to get descriptions and stuff. I’m 37.5% confident I’ll get something together. Heading off to bed, and I’ll probably have around 2-3 hours to work on this tomorrow. Maybe it turns into a game? We’ll see.

The only winning move…

My game is now fully pllanned out, including a couple of easter eggs and whatnot.

Programming should be easy to do now, sound should be fun, I’ll even have time for some ambient/dramatic music! Fancy that!

Anyway, so I’m making a game which is sort of inspired by that great film “Dr. Strangelove”. If you haven’t seen that film, it’s a dark comedy which covers the topic of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). If you don’t know what that is, look it up.

The game itself will have a bit of a grim mood, but will, much like the film, have elements of black comedy contained within.

Anyway, enough procrastination.

Riding the bomb

YYYYYYEEEEEEEHHHHHAAAWWWWW!!!!

I’ve Begun

Well I’ve started working for about half an hour now.  I’ve got some framework laid out and hopefully it’ll coalesce soon enough.  Still feel as if doom is upon the land, but the good news is that if I’m not able to finish I’ll just keep chuggin’.  Considering it’s my first I’ll be happy enough to complete it by January.

Late lunch/snack

So it’s come to another short snack break, I decided as Cptalbertwesker had made Waffles, I’d do the closet thing that I could.

So I made pancakes, there’s even a pretty evil looking pancake clearly visible on the pile of them. I made them from a scotch pancake recipe so the batter was very thick and they turned out very tasty and sweet.

The game’s coming along ok, I only went for a simple idea and haven’t gone for anything hugely different. But after not completing my game for LD21 I need to make sure to do something simpler and easy to finish for LD22 :)

Good stuff is good

I have working movement collision and triggers for level changes.

Obligatory screen shot

One of my flat mates has a Cat called Holly, she was VERY disappointed when kittens lost so she edited the my white board to include some improvements.

Getting somewhere

After a good nights sleep after waiting for the theme to be announced (03:00 local) I’ve got an initial idea for first iteration. Got some more stuff considering gameplay but it will let it cook in my brain for a while. Will start coding the general functionality now. Avast!
