If you want to get into top 100 overall (which I assume you mean), it’s going to take some skill. You’re not going to go from #1007 to #100 after three months is what I’m saying. (And that applies to me, too– I’ve never been close to the top 100 after 5 events.)

Good luck and go for it!

What should i use to load images in lwjgl?

I thought this would be a good place to post this question.

LWJGL doesn’t have a built in texture loader so what is the best thing to use to load textures.

I tried the slick-util but it gave me an error. If it is possible to load images without any added libraries that would be awesome.

this is the error that the slick util gave me:

WARN:class org.newdawn.slick.opengl.PNGImageData failed to read the data
java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: Unsupported format for this image

Thanks in advance!!

Ned

EDIT:

I sorted that problem however if somebody could tell me how to use a part of an image so i can make a sprite sheet, that would be awesome

Thanks in advance !!

I’ve used slick-util quite a bit with LWJGL and never had that particular problem. Perhaps it’s not able to interpret something added by the program you’re making the PNGs in. Try opening and saving them again in another program, just to help rule that out.

Ok thanks guys. I worked out that the image had to be a power of two. Also if somebody could tell me how to use only a part of an image with slick-util so i could make a sprite sheet that would be amazing.

I always just load it through a BufferedImage and put the pixel information into a ByteBuffer by doing

“I’m In”, Ludum Dare 30

Hey all…

I am once again in for the ludum dare. Despite never being in the top one thousand i’m still going for top 100.

I will be using the language Java with the LWJGL/OpenGL library

Graphics: Paint.net

Ideas: My head

I am really bad at thinking up game ideas so i’m hoping i will think of a good one this time.

Good Luck!!

Ned :) :)

EDIT: Oh yea and i almost forgot. The IDE  that i will be using is IntelliJ :).

It helps to know it doesn’t matter what place you come in, as long as you’re having fun, and you’re happy with the end product.

Haha I’m like the exact same as you. Always thinking I’ll be top 100 and I use eclipse and paint.net as well. Unfortunately I don’t use lwjgl but I might use opengl depending if I do 3d or not.

Done!

My pure LWJGL. 3D planet game thing.. Is done!!

any comments will be so appreciated

please comment and vote 😀

I would give IntelliJ a try – you can write a lot faster than Eclipse, since you don’t really need to take your hands off the keyboard, and Live Templates accelerate common things so much.

MINI LD 57 – desreveR

I am really looking forward to starting this MINI LD two days ago (wut?? :0)

everything went AMAZING I obviously came first (lol) and all the ideas were just sooo good.

WHAT WENT WELL:

I came first (even though there are not places)

my friends said my game was amazing (this is actually relatively likely)

WHAT WENT BADLY:

uuuummmm….

probably a lot of stuff.

Hope you had fun everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ludum Dare 32, I’m In

Yes! Let’s kick of the i’m in posts for the LUDUM DARE 32, seeing as there are only 18 days till it happens.

I am IN!!!

Tools:

  • Eclipse
  • Java
  • LWJGL (possibly)
  • If not LWJGL I will probably just use JavaGraphics

Hopes:

I am hoping to come in the top ten people (this isn’t going to happen. But there is no benefit in trying otherwise)

Good Luck to everyone else doing the Ludum Dare 😀

In my experience, Swing is pretty hard to get running at a decent framerate. If LWJGL doesn’t work out (and maybe if it does), I would recommend LibGDX!

Someone play me some music!!!!!!!

I found this guys https://plug.dj/ludum-dare out of ALL the people game devving right now, listening to music.

No one is on PlugDJ. C’mon guys!!!!!!

I’m In!!! :D….. Maybe?

This is the first Ludum Dare that I will not definitely be able to compete in.

I am on holiday that week, and it is the only week the rest of my family could make which is why I am not at home during that weekend. I am hoping to participate but I don’t know whether I will be able. It all comes down to how good the internet connection is at the hotel in Italy.

Tools:

  • Photoshop CS6: for my bad graphics
  • Eclipse: for Java code
  • LWJGL: in case I decide to make a 3D game
  • openGL: If I use LWJGL I will be making a 3D game with modern OpenGL.

Hope Everyone has a great time :D!!!!!

Ned

Whew! 3D Java Perspective. Ascent from Hades!!

Hades hell, whatever!!

It is a game where you are an evil flesh eating monster (obviously) basically a zombie. I want a kinda dungeon crawler style (like DM 2).

the aim of the game is to escape from living hell (the dungeon). Into the world of light and flesh that you have heard rumors about.

So yes…. The aim of the game is to start a zombie apocalypse 😀

I don’t really care about time. Thinking about time just makes me stressed (and breeds mistakes)

Good Luck everyone!!!!

Yey, Spinning models + text rendering!!!

This is what I have done so far. I am using modern OpenGL which takes a long time. From here on out, it should be pretty fast though 😀

Compared to other people’s progress reports I seem quite behind. However, I still think I will finish, if not the whole game, I will make it simplified. I have quite a good idea :D.

I should speed up because I just had a very strong coffee as well!!

Good luck everyone!!!!

Ned Boulter

Probably going to miss the next Ludum Dare.

The next ludum dare is the week before my GCSEs start. So I will not be doing the upcoming Ludum Dare.

However I will almost certainly be doing the one after the next :( (seems like such a long time).

I am wondering whether I should do a mini ludum dare to make up for it. However I don’t know how
much feedback you get for a mini ludum dare game??

Thanks for being the best community ever 😀

Ned

LD35

I’m In

I made a post quite a while ago, where I said that I would not be competing due to GCSE’s

However… I have changed my mind, because I have competed in every Ludum Dare since I started
and it seems like a massive shame to break that streak.

However, I will not be able to go to bed late, and I will still be doing 3 hours of revision each day,
as well as the Ludum Dare.

Tools:

Java: Programming Language
Eclipse: IDE,
Photoshop: for bad pixel art
LWJGL and JOML: for confusing 3D stuff? Not sure about this one.

There is a very high chance that I won’t use OpenGL and just use a DataBufferInt data array as a color buffer, and make a raycaster.

I can’t wait, it is going to be awesome!!

Stay Awesome!

Ned

Lycanthropy

As always my game has a very clichéd name.

It means werewolf (I think). Anyway, it is a game where there are civilians, some of which are

werewolves, and you have to shoot werewolves without shooting civilians.

Sometimes, you will see civilians acting strangely, and this means that they are probably a werewolf and you should shoot them.

However, sometimes a civilian will be acting strangely, just because of bad coding, then you will shoot him, and you will lose.

Anyway, that is the general idea.

Here is a screenie of the start menu (it is in a Wolf3D Dungeoncrawler retro type art style, for some reason):

Rating Games

I sorta missed the “Golden Time” for rating games.

I wanna see what more people think, so I am posting a link.
I am still rating games also!!
If anyone wants to make a youtube LP of my game. I would love you forever!!

Looking for friendly indie team 15 – 18yrs

Hi,

I am Ned Boulter, and I wish to put together a small indie team (consisting of no more than three people), to make a game, over these summer holidays.

Criteria:

Artist:

  • You must be good at pixel, and HD art. (HD art matters less, I love pixellated games)
  • 3D Modelling experience is good
  • good at level design – (Be willing to learn, it is fine if you don’t have any actual experience)
  • You must have few commitments during the Summer Holiday.

Musician – be able to make good music, I am very inexperienced in this area.

I have just finished my GCSE’s and will be going on to college after the summer holidays, so if you decide you join, you will be working, up until the end of the summer holiday.

After the summer holiday, we will likely remain friends, however, I cannot make any commitments after that point.

The most important criteria is that you are friendly, and it is important that we do not put pressure on each other, as it is mainly for fun. Please understand, that we may not finish a game, and that would be fine. If we do complete a game, it is even less likely we will try to release it. This would just be for the fun of seeing a game develop :D.

If you decide you don’t like the game half-way through development, we will discuss scrapping it, and starting again. If you decide you want to leave the team, that is fine, however it will probably ruin our chances of finishing a game.

I hope this is a good place to post this, it is my dream to work in a very small indie team, and thought, well… It’s worth a try, why not do it now :D.

If you are interested just drop your Skype name in the comments, and we will talk and discuss your work. After I decide I want to work with you, I will not “fire” you or anything childish like that, we will be working as friends. You must have a working microphone, be willing to speak on Skype, and you must speak good English. If you don’t wish to share your Skype name, add me, my name is “nednednednedned1” (I made it a long time ago :/)

Lastly, I will be programming the game in C++, with OpenGL, or Java with OpenGL, we will discuss which one. I am more in need of an artist than a musician (since there is no point in hiring a musician, with no artist, since we won’t have a game). However, I do think music is extremely important in games (Imagine DOOM without the music :o).

If this is the wrong place to post this message, also tell me in the comments, and I will remove the post.

Thanks 😀

Ned Boulter
