It’s that time of the year for putting on dressing gowns, making games and playing DnD (Dungeons and Dragons).
This time I’ve decided to go in for my fifth compo with a hand tied behind my back and some restrictions, in order to spice it up a notch and add that hardcore beast mode coding factor.
My handicaps are:
- Only use 1-bit colours (black and white) for art
- Design and code the core mechanic in 4 hours
What will this achieve, you may ask? Well… Making the art in two colours will sort of make it more difficult to convey what I’m actually showing, but make it easier to stay consistent when making art assets. The real push will be the 4 hour deadline on the core mechanic. This is mostly stolen from Cactus’ talks on game development, but will actually push me to make the mechanic first, without distractions, polishing and refining it over the next 44 hours. Hopefully this will make for an interesting twist on my part.
Otherwise, I’m going for an arcade, score attack, limited lives sort of game, with a fair amount of difficulty, as to get those fourth grader nickels from the arcade machine I’ll never release.
Anyway, here are the things I’ll be using, shamelessly copied from August’s LDJAM. Nothing has changed outside of me purchasing the Professional Edition of GameMaker: Studio:
- Programming
- GameMaker (GML)
- Code::Blocks (C++)(OpenGL)
- Eclipse (Java)(LWJGL)
- Unity (C#)
- Artwork
- Blender (3D)
- Macromedia Flash 8 (2D) #flashisnotdead
- Photoshop CS6 (2D)
- Paint.NET (2D)
- Trust Slimline Design (Tablet)
- Music
- Casio CTK-450 (Synth)
- Puldin Guitar from 1991 (Acoustic Guitar)
- FLStudio 11
- SFX
- Misc.
- Notepad++ (for quick notes)
- MS Word (for writing)
- OBS (for streaming)
Again, I’ll be streaming the entire event on http:/twitch.tv/artyllo. Chat is always open, so drop by if you want and we’ll have a chat about random stuff and ask questions about me, programming and/or game development, art, music, ect. I’ll probably also have a timelapse uploaded on my YouTube after the event has finished, which can be found here.
