LD32

First Ludum Dare, I’m In!

So, I’m in! I’ve asked a few friends to help on the art/music side of things and it sounds like they’re going to help. I’ll be using GameMaker Studio(Because it’s free and I know how to use it.) for the engine, probably Paint.net for graphics, and most likely Audacity for audio. Gonna mess with some tools today and we’ll see if anything changes. Can’t wait to see the theme. Have some IRL things to do so I won’t be working 72 hours straight. Guess I’ll have to work extra hard. :) Tl;Dr: I’m in!!!

I’m In (most likely…)

So yeah! I’m planning to be in… unless the theme is terrible. Anyway, here are my tools!

Engine: Probably Unity. I’ve been playing with it recently and I think I’ve got the hang of it.

Sound: sfxr

3D Graphics: Blender

2D Graphics: Paint.net / GIMP

Music: Probably LMMS

I’ve also got 2 monitors this time round, so that’s awesome!

I SHALL BE BACK!

Well… I’ve got an idea. I’ve planned a bunch but only focused on one 3d model so far. Gotta get some mechanics prototyped but I’m feeling pretty tired. I’m gonna take a quick nap and get up for more coding. See you all soon!

Here is a teaser… (That took me way too long…)

Pinata

I have my idea!

So, I have a great idea that fits the theme, and is absolutely hilarious. I’ve even got a narrative in mind! This is gonna be GOOD!

I will tease something when I have more.

GOOOOOOD MORNING LUDUM DARE!

Well… I’ve gotten nothing important done… this is crazy…

I have no idea what I’m doing anymore…

(Not idea wise just implementation wise…)

How do you keep motivation?

I’m having some serious trouble with this… I wanna build this game but it feels so difficult. How do you keep motivated and how do you have fun even when your frustrated? Excited to hear what everyone thinks. Thanks!

When I get frustrated, I either like to just play whatever I have for a bit (it often inspires new mechanics, or ways to solve problems), or go for a walk. It helps just to clear your head every so often!

Start small buddy, it’s easier and gears you up for the more complex ideas and work.

I’ve met some people also participating in LD in real-life some time ago & contacted them again yesterday. The google-hangout we’ve started helps reduce the ‘lonely’ feeling for me :-)

do it one step at a time.. frustrated means u had accepted the defeat

try for a smaller game concept which can be completed in 48hrs.

Split it in to tiny tasks and keep doing till the time runs out..

I am learning Godot for this Jam, Installed the game engine after theme announced only.

no clue will i able to finish, but difference is i feel thrill rather than frustrated..

so as it goes.. do it one step at a time..

You’re not the only one! I generally keep my motivation by checking what other people are doing and sharing my work, but it’s still hard. You can do it though, so don’t give up!

Thanks everybody! And overall, no matter the product, it’s about finishing a game.

I always remind myself why did I start at the first place. This helps a LOT. “Switching off” (i.e. having a break) also helps, if nothing else :)

So… help?

I’m beginning to think my idea is too thematic and not enough mechanic. I’ve got nothing really useful prototyped except a couple art assets that took me way too long. Thoughts?

The 4 words I live by for jams: Keep It Simple Stupid

STARTING OVER! I’m nuts!

I’ve got a way to rework my mechanics completely while keeping my main art asset and theme! HERE WE GO!

Don’t worry, last GGJ we had to restart everything on the second day, keep the good work! 😀

Thanks for the encouragement 😀 I love this community.

Happy Sunday! ALLONS-Y!

Just got home from church so IT’S TIME FOR SOME CODING!

No way I can make it…

Well… I’m not gonna make it… I have to head to work and a combination of restarting, lack of motivation, and a bit of procrastination has sucked up my time. I’ll probably finish the game and post it here (Not in the jam of course) for everyone to see. I’ll try again next LD. Overall, I had fun!  Thanks everybody!

I’m gonna be able to submit!!!

I didn’t think I could possibly make it! But I’m gonna be able to submit my game! It’s missing a lot of polish. But…

IT.. IS… DONE!

Clarification…

When the rules say you can package-up and submit in submission hour. That means you can build IN submission hour right? Just as long as the game is finished?

Yes.

I can’t play the game, when I run it, a window appears that says it need a folder with data

Ludum Dare 37

I am SO in!

I am so ready for this LD. I’ll be using Unity as my engine, Blender for 3d models, 2d art will probably be a mix of Paint.net,  GIMP,  and Inkscape. Personally hoping for the fusion theme. It seems like you could get some really cool mechanics from that. Anyway, can’t wait to jam. Happy jamming everyone.

Finally got an idea…

So, I finally have a good idea I can get moving… But I’m feeling tired which is a bit disappointing for 1:30 AM… I really need to keep moving…
So, idea time! I’m gonna build a time management game where you operate a food truck (that’s one room right?) and serve customers different orders of food based on themed levels. I think I’m gonna be doing a voxel based art style for the first time so… that’s fun! Anyway, wish me luck!

Might not make it…

So, yeah… I scoped too big (even though I thought it was small) and I worked too slowly…

Well, I’ll do what I can tomorrow and post whatever I can, even if that’s just screenshots. Still, I learned some new stuff so it wasn’t a total wast of time. Kinda sad though. Well, see you all tomorrow…

Events like these are a fantastic way to learn and improve your entire work flow. 48h or even 72h is a tremendously short amount of time to come up with something and then execute it from beginning to end. Congrats on making cool things!

I have the same problem. My game either will be unfunished or I will have to give up on some of the features. I have learned a lot, but I feel disappointed. I have wasted so much time on stupid bugs. I will still do my best to finish it, but it doesn’t look good. I wish you good luck. Don’t give up, try less features.

Welp… didn’t make it.

Well, after a valiant effort (at least on the last day) I did NOT make it to submission hour. At this point I have a fun toy that is entirely unplayable as a game. I suppose I could upload that, but there isn’t much to do so I don’t feel it’s worth it. Even though I felt motivated, I kept getting distracted (darn Netflix…) and  didn’t get much done until today. I can’t even imagine how some people do 24 hour jams…
I will be finishing my little taco truck game and posting a blog post for it in the near future so if something like Taco Truck Tycoon sounds fun to you, look for that.
I played with a voxel based art style this time and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be using that again. It’s quite easy to make fun models quickly and easily.
Well, that’s all the time I have for now. I look forward to playing your games!

LD 38

I. AM. IN!

So excited! I’m in for #LD38.

Tools:

  • Engine: Unity
  • Sound: Audacity/Whatever I can find
  • Music: Either Musescore 2 or LMMS
  • Art: GIMP, Inkscape, Paint.Net, Blender, Magica Voxel, basically whatever I feel like.

I am very excited to see what theme we get this time round. Hope everyone has a good time and happy jamming!
