Ummm yeah, so hi

I don’t know if this is even necessary, but hell, there it goes. Muramasa reporting that he will be in. Heh, I’m referring to myself in third person, whatever…

I’m going to mimic what I’ve seen other people do, because I’m that much of a monkey :D (?).

Engine: Game Maker

Language: GML -not much of a choice-

Tools to use: GraphicsGale for graphics. BFXR, FamiTracker, Audacity for sound/music.

Now, I want to share some of the dev time (or whatever). The PC I’ll be using has some problems with streaming, so I’ll be making a timelapse. ChronoLapse SHOULD work there, if not then I’ll commit suicide. Nope, not really.

I need to travel tomorrow to my parents house for something… After that, I’ll finally meet up with my compo partner (my PC <3), and then 48h of pure gaem maek!

So yeah! That’s all the story. Now let’s see what the theme ends up being…

And this is my first time, so please be gentle. <3

Early stages: the hen lays the egg

So this is Gravedigger on its VERY early stages.

8nQ74

After all it will be a platformer, heh.

I have already planned the main features of it, and have basic platforming working, along with the most basic animations, so now it’s about working on those features, and making some level design. I need to plan ahead what kinds of things will populate the world, to have a better understanding of how much time I can spend on each thing.

So here is my course of action. I’ll be finishing the main character’s main feature. After that, I’ll go and get some sleep, I’m pretty tired right now, this day wasn’t specially an easy one. While I get some sleep, I’ll do some paper work (?), level sketches and a list of objectives. Then, my secret technique. Sleep Talk. Sleeping is the best weapon against mind disorganization.

Another update tomorrow. Sketches, or something.

Here is some update

Well, since yesterday, things have been progressing. Not really fast, but considering some *things* it’s not that bad.

This is today’s progress so far:

  • AI for a snake. It will be used as base for other more complex enemy AIs (not super-duper complex but anyway, I’m still pretty bad at platformers).
  • Added sounds and the first area music.
  • Added introductory text, title screen and death. The snake can kill you, yay! And you can kill her, awwwww…
  • You can dig holes, tile-based style. Not going to ever bother with pixel-perfect destructible environments, sorry!
  • The first area is done.

Things to finish up today:

  • 1 or 2 more enemy kinds.
  • Health recovery item.
  • Second area.

Lastly, here some screenshots.

And that’s it for the moment.

Timelapses -1st and 2nd day

Since it ends up being like 500mb of JPGs per day, I’m dividing the timelapse by day. So, I thought it would be fine to upload them right now.

So here they are. 1st and 2nd day. Because of GMT-6 (?). I’ll include them later at the submit form, but whatever.

1st Day (2:16) – http://youtu.be/3ZrMwHHDHss

2nd Day (5:42) – http://youtu.be/ZMLK9GqQuKk

Now, it’s time for me to die. I was glad to meet you nice people… cough cough… the light. Seems like… a beautiful maiden with… hamsters everywhere…

…I’ll revive in August. Probably.

What is a Postmortem?

Ummm… yeah. I don’t know what dat is. But here I’m trying to write one. Because EVERYONE ELSE does. I blatantly copy the structure from other’s posts. I’m such a jerk… But that’s what YOU love about me, right?

About: Gravedigger 20XX is a game about a moleman, his sad story, being transformed into something he can’t describe, but also about his strong will, looking to defeat what was underground. Beyond the surface of the ground. (?).

The Good: It workz!!!!1. That’s all I see as good, I don’t know.

The Bad: Difficulty sucks, the spike at the end is insufferable. Water physics, which I added at the end, annoys a little. And the digging mechanic has a lot of flaws at how it selects the block to dig in.

What I learned: I don’t know. I think I learned something about platformers. But I can’t describe it. I just say, that the only way you can learn something is getting your hands dirty. So if there is something you want to do and haven’t, Start Doing It Right Naww.

This is all my postmortem.

Now, here comes the timelapse.

– Watch them -he says-.

Trivia: You probably guessed it. But 20XX is a random extra at the title. Has no meaning. Or does it?

You seemed to get the rough idea. A postmortem on a game is a retrospective analysis on what you thought worked, and didn’t work. Then it’s typically concluded by any things you plan on doing with that information going forward, basically what you learned to do or not do.

Thanks for everything (I’m not dying tomorrow)

So I didn’t “won anything”, if we get to the idea of getting some medals (except for a coolness one… maybe?). But anyway, it was a nice experience. So thanks people for your support, and/or making some rad videogaemz. This was pretty cool. As always, you have that little bug stick on your butt, about what could have you done better, and whatnot, and why the hell *this* game is there (jealousy, perhaps?). Ahahaha, but WHATEVER, that’s human nature to you.

Had some trouble at having time for judging other games. I got to 70 coolness, not so bad, but I could had done better on that aspect. The first day I was pretty tired, and had to get a bus next day in the morning, so had to stop there. And the rest of the time, well, college. College every second. If not, then it’s my regular personal project in RPG Maker which I can’t abandon.

I got #72 in graphics. It’s fine, but I know I could have done better. Got a nice place at Theme too. But I don’t care, I just care about graphics because I’m mainly a graphical “artist”, and that’s the spot that hurts, you know! Damn! Heheh. Whatever, I’m being dramatic.

I care about making a good game too, but that’s when places doesn’t mean a thing. At least for myself and my own development (?). That’s why I say that my graphical me is the only one bothered by placing and being competitive. I should care more though, if not, what will be of me in the future, when I have bills to pay? “OTL.

As for Gravedigger 20XX, I have some plans for it, a little expansion on the concept, just to not let it there rotting without love (?). Just some time ago I was talking to a friend about it, and he gave me some nice ideas. And I had some too because I’m THAT awesome, YEAH. You see my face? No? Then picture it like this: It’s awesome.

Where was I? Oh right, so yeah. Nice party dudes and dudettes. So, till August, let’s meet again!

I’m here people! I’m sorry I just post that I did a game

Hello! I participated in LD29. Yeah, everyone knows me! I won nothing :D!. Actually that’s false, we all know that you win just by finishing something, or just trying. Anyway!

I made this game called Orlyrinth. Here’s the entry: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=30442

It’s a little shoot-em up sidescroller (though the character shoots nothing!). Here is a little screen…

scr_07

Wait! That shows nothing! Uh… okay, here is another one…

scr_09

Dammit! Why I always die!

scr_10

Urghhh… next!

scr_08

Oh! Finally! Now as you can see there is a lot of things happening there, even if there is absolutely nothing in-screen. No enemies, I mean.

This game has leveling, a stamina meter (attacking depletes it, and defending too), a timer that tells ME when things are going to pop out. And a stage number. And score. I took up the time and the game uploads your score to GameJolt, I mean, it took me some minutes to do it, and several more to stop doing nothing and upload my entry.

Also this time I participated in the JAM. I wanted to be a little more calm, because this is what I do after finishing the semester. And there is something else still left to do, urgh, but whatever. Also I wanted to give someone else a chance at delving into game making, she helped me at several things, and well, yay! Maybe later we will retry! Bwahah!

So yeah, thanks for reading this. And I hope you give it a try. I beg pardon for difficulty, this game is pretty PRETTY unpolished. But pretty (?). ;o I’m an “artist”, not an avid game developer, even if I want to be one “orz. But I’m trying! I try.

Salut!
