As a matter of curiosity, one of my non-LD games, Doug dug. (iOS, Android), has had a huge upswing in popularity in the last day or so. It’s pretty exciting to have 35,000 people download your game in 24 hours.

But I’d love it if you could rate my Ludum Dare 31 entry, Claustrophobia.

Today I wrote a sort of lament for the passing of the era in which small games made good money. From the article:

In the early 80s, all it took to make a game was a computer, some graph paper, and a lot of determination.

Games were created by brilliant individuals.

Their designs were often groundbreaking and sometimes deeply artistic.

Their choices defined much of what we see in games today.

Some of these auteur game developers even made a decent living….

I’m in for my third Ludum Dare with my hand-made engine Fresh, art by Photoshop, sound by cfxr and Garage Band. Goal: land in the top 100.

My fourth Ludum Dare. The last was a dud though—I started out full of drive but life intruded and by Saturday I had been pulled away by pressing issues in “the real world”. Hopefully the real world will mind its own business this time.

I will use:

• Xcode for Xcoding
• Sublime Text for all the stuff Xcode can’t do but should’ve a long time ago
• Photoshop for arting
• GarageBand for musicking
• Cfxr for sounding
• My own engine, “Fresh”, for engining
• C++ for talking to the computer with
• Emscripten for webbing

P.S., I am the villain in this whole Ludum Dare 33 thing but I don’t know it because I’ve just been programmed to do this.

Would you please try Hop’s Hope, my 48-hour compo entry for LD33? I think you’ll probably like it, maybe. Except… no, maybe you won’t like it so much. Yeah, now that I think about it you’ll probably dislike it in some ways, ways that ultimately will make you hate it and want to destroy the memory of it, or better yet its creator. In fact it will almost certainly make you contemplate whether it would be possible to send a robot back in time to destroy ALL games so that this one abomination might never have been committed.

Still, it’s worth a try, you know?

Shphew, I finished the compo just barely. It's a miniature golf game (maybe more like billiards actually), with exploding balls and helpless, innocent piggies who must not be exploded. Of course not.

Have you ever wondered whether the top Ludum Dare competitors tend to win again and again, or show up once and then disappear?

Have you ever wondered who the absolute TOP compo developer is when you look over the last several years of Ludum Dare?

I got answers.

What we want is a list of all the LD compo contestants for the last several years who placed in the top-100 overall. We can then count up how many times they placed, and maybe even compare how well they tend to place over time.

The table below shows exactly that.

This table shows all the compo contestants from LD26 through LD41 who have placed in the top 100 at least twice. In this table, NAME is the disambiguated name of the competitor. "Disambiguated" means that two usernames are considered identical if they are the same when converted to lowercase and having all spaces removed. WINS is the number of times that competitor has appeared in the top-100 overall between LD26 and LD41.

SCORE gives each contestant an overall score, calculated in the following way. Your score for a given contest is (101 - your placement); so the top finisher for a given Ludum Dare event gets 100 points and the person in 100th place gets 1 point. Your total score across the contests, then, is the sum of these single-contest scores. Higher is better.

In order from most wins to least, here are the top-100 winners with at least two top-100 Overall wins.

In my last post I showed all the Ludum Dare compo winners who've placed in the top 100 more than once since Ludum Dare 26. I didn't have space to show all of the winners who'd ever placed in the top-100 since LD26. I had to cut out everyone who has placed exactly once. But these "One Hit Wonders" absolutely deserve credit too. So here they are: all the Ludum Dare compo winners who placed in the top 100 exactly once since Ludum Dare 26.

SCORE in this table is calculated as (101 - placement), so if you placed 1st, you get 100 points and if you placed 100th you get 1 point.

I'll compete in the compo. I'm a bit undecided on tools still. It's either option 1 or option 2.

Option 2: Tic-80

• the Tic-80 fantasy console for everything

So... we doing this thing? I sure hope we are. It's two weeks away. I'm expecting to see news postings about LD46, the theme slaughter... anything. I seem them not. Is there some way we can help to kick this thing off?

Using my own fantasy console/engine “Freshly” along with VSCode, photoshop, Logic, maybe cfxr.

This will be my...maybe my tenth Ludum Dare, something like that? I'm deciding today on whether to try out Unity or to use my own engine, Freshly.
