Text Base Adventure Game for LD

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if we are allowed to make a text based game for the ludum dare?

I am going to be using python with pygame and was wondering if it was okay to use just text in the game.

I will have stuff like inventory and choices and maybe ascii graphics and sounds, but I just wanted to make sure that it was okay!

Thanks!

I’d be strongly surprised when I’d see real life footages about a board game. 馃榾

The type doesn’t matter, as long as it’s a game! 馃榾

what programming language should I learn to code 2D or 3D games? (experienced programmer)

Hi everyone

****I posted new questions about compilers and editors in the comments please read them :) ****

I am an experienced programmer and know a few languages.

I want to start making games with a windows 7 computer for any operating system (linux, Mac and Windows).

I do not know which is the best coding language to use for that that is free But has a good compiler and runs well. I also do not want to use software like gamemaker or construct. Something like c++ or java or love2D so please take that into consideration!

Also what libraries would I need for 2D games for now to make it with.

Thanks so much for your help in advance! I really want to become some kind of game devloper so this is key.

Hope you all are having fun in the ludum dare! Expect me to be ready for the next one!

Hope my questions make sense!

Please comment!

Thanks

I may want to try 3D games in the future as well!

Consider Monogame. I haven’t personally used it, but it’s pretty popular lately.

Well it depends on the type of game you want to make.

I code mostly 2D games.

I code a lot of flash games, due to how easy it’s to get people to play web stuff, and that AS3 is an actual standalone language these days. I use the Flashpunk and Flixel libraries for help, depending on the kind of game. Sterling if I want hardware acceleration, but that has almost never been the case.

If I need more CPU power than what I can get in a browser I use Java with Slick2D.

If I need even more power or want to manage memory manually, I use C++ and SDL. But development times are a lot slower in C++ so I tend to avoid it.

That’s about it.

I use C# with XNA … is awesome! you should try it (:

well if your looking for something java related you could always try LWJGL, its capable of 2D and 3D, also LWGJL has a library called slick2D that acts as a wraper for 2D games made with it, another alternative is c# with xna as that is also 2D and 3D, good luck :)

I use mainly Java is LibGDX, its a library for 2D and 3D games, very good, easy to use solution for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux. I know you don’t want to use Gamemaker or Construct, but what about Unity3D you program in C# JS, or Boo, and I believe there is a 2D toolkit for it too.

Monogame is pretty much XNA for all platforms. It’s open source, so it’s free, but not the most reliable.

Unity seems like one of the best, but if you want to sell a large amount of games, you’ll have to pay out the subscription price.
25. Aug 2013 路 00:37 UTC
All this is opinion, but… I would say: avoid Java at all costs. If you’re considering Java, look to Scala or other languages like it that work around Java’s nastiness. I can almost always tell a Java game from how broken it is, and how slowly it loads/runs.
25. Aug 2013 路 00:48 UTC
I’m in love with java, just want to through that our there 馃槢 Gazok probably just bases his info off of 1 kid who had a bad experience with it, java is good for games, data, and really just about anything

Thanks for all of your comments so far and responding quickly! I have tried to learn Java with lwjgl but it proved to be complicated.

So I am looking to use either c# or c++!

But I have 2 or more questions. 1. Can mac or linux run games made with those languages?

2. What compiler do I use to compile the code to run like minigw or is it already embeded in the code?

And what code editor should I use? I am thinking eclipse ide c version or codeblocks any suggestions?

Finally should I learn how to code the languages through videos, books or online text tutorials?

Thanks for your help!

If Java was complicated for you, C++ will kill you.

If your problem was with lwjgl which is pretty barebones, try Slick2D.

C# is just Java with some different things, but made by an evil company yadda yadda yadda.

I鈥檓 in and excited!

Hi everyone!

I’m excited to say that it’s Summer for me and that means I can join in on this Ludum Dare Competition coming next weekend!

I am going to be using Python and Pygame 3.3 to program my game and going to try to learn enough to make a simple game for the compo and if not in time to memorize everything, I will enter the Jam so I can at least finish the game and learn a lot in Python and Pygame!

I am still searching for an easy solution to export pygame’s for all OS’ and if any of you have solutions to this problem please comment below to help me out!

I can’t wait to finish a game with Pygame and I hope this is the weekend that I will do it!

Happy programming everyone! Good luck and Have Fun!

I鈥檓 In 2.0 WIth Unity!

Hi everyone! I am going to be using Unity 4.3 for the first time and was wondering if there is a strong learning curve to it? (In for the Jam)

I plan on doing tutorials and make a game today before tomorrow!

If you have any tips let me know!

Also I see how it says you get a 30 day trial of Unity Pro does that mean you can still use Unity standard version after that and still export games?

Let me know please in the comments!

I’m excited to join in!

Good Luck everyone! Vlogs updates will be on my youTube channel: SwipeFastStudios!

Unity is quite easy to learn, but you should definitely try to create a mini game before the actual LD action. From my experience aim very low and at all cost try finish it. Practice is everything! But most important, HAVE FUN!

To answer your other question: you can continue to use the standard version afterwards, but pro-only features will not work anymore. But for LD nad getting started the standard version is all you need.

Thanks a lot for the reply and the tips!I will try to make a basic game tonight but not sure if I thin I should use the new 2D functions they added instead of a hard 3D game with modelling and such. Also do you know an easy way to share the game on a webpage or would it be easier just to export the game into a standalone file? :) thanks

I鈥檓 in and Ready!

Hi everyone!

I am in for this Ludum Dare and want to make a complete finish of my game!

Last time I tried but failed to use my creative side effectively and efficiently so this time I will learn from my mistakes, take breaks, draw out some ideas, and not rush into one idea before thinking it through! I also want to brainstorm first to see my options, enemies, player, and situations the game could be done!

I also need to get more sleep haha to keep going throughout the competition!

Tools:

I will be using Gamemaker:Studio Standard edition!

Also using my guitar, bass, electric guitar or piano for the music and possibly my blue snowball iCE microphone to record with Audacity!

I also did a warmup game :聽http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30-warmup/?action=preview&uid=24642

Hope you all survive this competition!

We’ll see if I finish in time for the 48 hours or the Jam!

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Day 1 Update W/ TimeLapse

3 hours into the Jam, Feels like forever!

Tried one idea but that failed so I thought of another!

This will be a bit of a complicated Game to play at first but should be fun!

Here is a Time Lapse of what I’ve done so far in Gamemaker Studio :聽Time Lapse

It is out of the box idea, basically you are a IT Server Manager and have to keep your servers running and your clients happy and connected all over the world!聽 Let me know what you all think!

Here are some images of the interface and deleting viruses process! These are all just ideas, subject to change! 聽Off to bed!

To start over or not to, that is the question!

I have been wrestling with my networking idea for a while now.

The game idea seems cool, and outside of the box but I don’t know how to make it fun or challenging!

I don’t know if I should start over and try to think of a better and more simple game!

What do you think? Start over and finish? or keep trying and possibly not finish? xD

so hard to think of ideas, might just go into the jam so I can finish this!

Progress Report 1

Hi everyone! Progress report number 1! As shown by the Picture below, I have decided to have different sections on the screen to represent different Levels in the Game! To make the game longer than 30 seconds, I think I should figure out a way to make it so that when a player finishes the game, the boxes move each time you go to the end and to the beginning, increasing the challenge of the game, including possibly some holes to fall in, lava, and fire as well as enemies! Live streaming work at twitch.tv/wordout Hope all of you are coding well! 聽SwipeFastStudios

One Screen Game Progress Update 2

Hi everyone I have been coding for about 2 and a half hours and have come up with a good idea and good progress on my game. (As seen below)

I have ran into the problem that Gamemaker Studio free can only had 15 objects in one game so I’ve had to work around that by keeping the same general themes for the 8 levels, Caves (Brown), Snow(White), Grasslands (Green) and Mountains (gray).

This has been a drawback and I have decided to keep going but next time I’d like to learn a different software to make games.

But regardless I will finish this game tomorrow, So Far I have implemented Spikes in the Cave levels that go up and down and if you (Player as the head) collide with them when they are out of the ground, you die.

I have also added some SNOWMEN to avoid in the snow level, as I know many people wanted the snowman as the theme so I decided to put in what the people want.

Although this is a very simple design and game, I’d rather have it simple and finish it then not simple and never finish.

As you can see you go through all biomes per say to get to the 3rd in the bottom row to finish the game!

I will work on the level design of the other levels tomorrow as for now I need some rest!

Good luck to all!

See you tomorrow!

Time Lapse and V;log will be posted when Game is finished on www.youtube.com/swipefaststudios so Subscribe there to get update!

Change of Plans!

So I recently posted that I was using Gdevelop, but I will be using that as a back up program.

Instead I will be using Love2D because I just figured out how to do basic collision detection!

Next Step is to figure out how to allow the player to move along the edges of the object.

Then, I need to learn tile loaders, and physics and then I will be ready for the Jam!

Good Luck to All!

Changing Codebase

Hi everyone!

I posted earlier that I was going to use Gdevelop but I’ve decided that will be my back up software.

Instead I will be coding with Lua and Love2D + Notepad++ and Paint.Net!

I will most likely make a point click adventure as I am coding the library for it now as I am doing the Jam.

I figure it would be good to start with something simple and work my way up in Love2d!

I also will be using my new wacom touch and pen tablet for drawing the scenes!

Hopefully I will draw good art!

I will be posting updates here and on Twitter @Swipefaststudio

Good Luck to all!

Happy Jamming!
