I’m In!

I tried entering the Ludum Dare last year but was unable to complete my game because of scheduling. This time I’m ready and excited. I’ve got the time I need and I will be entering in the compo. I will be streaming the entire process on twitch and using GameMaker Studio.

I wish everyone the best of luck!

I love how it’s going! I am looking forward to see how it comes out. My team is lacking animation skills and I am impressed with this. Keep it up!

What is a normal amount of votes to get?

I’m just curious. How many votes do most people get on their Ludum Dare games? My first game (LD32) got around 40 votes but this time my game seems to be doing much better and has 350+.

Just broke 50. First time participating. I didn’t do much promotion for it during development, however.

The best/best looking games get more ratings – from being featured in people’s “Best Of” lists, in videos, as well as racking up interest from blog posts throughout the competition.

Usually, you’ll get about as many, or slightly less, ratings then coolness. Although if you’re active in the community you can get more.

350? Whoa, nice! My entry has a grand total of 26, but I suspect that has to do largely with the warnings of potential offense :p

Early Gameplay

Nobody can tell what is going on in this game. Here are the basic rules.

  • Your enemies defense grows every turn.
  • You can play up to 3 cards each turn.
  • If you drop a card on the friendly unit it will gain +attack.
  • If you drop a card on the enemy unit it will gain +defense.
  • If your attack is = to your enemy’s defense at the end of the turn you will not take a counter attack.
  • If you go over your enemies defense during your turn you will loop back around with your attack and take a 2 damage penalty.

Does that make sense? I’ve also started adding other cards but it might not be a good idea because the game is already complicated enough to teach haha. Here is a gif.

You have gryphons. That alone is enough to make me love it.

Added a Background!

I’ve added a background and updated the GUI a bit. Now it is on to creating some actual enemy sprites!

My Compo Entry: Griffin Card!

Play it here.

I went outside my comfort zone a bit with this game. I normally like to create fast paced action games with lots of screenshake. This game is a strategy, turn-based, card game that only has a little bit of screenshake (I couldn’t resist). It was a good experience for me and I’m proud of what I was able to do in under 48 hours.

Here is a gif to tempt you into playing it 😉 Enjoy!

Android Build for my Game

I’ve been working on a post comp version of my game. Here are some of the things going into it

  • Bug fixes for tutorial
  • Changed mechanic for exceeding the enemy’s defense. You used to take a penalty but now you just can’t do it.
  • Added bonus score points for finding a solution early
  • Added card combos so you are rewarded with more points by finding ways to use more cards.
  • Fixed menu buttons.
  • ANDROID BUILD!

I still have a lot I want to improve in this game but it has been an amazing experience so far. Thank you all for the support!

Our Game Idea

When your game is about channeling magic through apps on your “ancient” iPad and fighting robots with a charmander you know you are on to something good!

NEVERMIND – I refreshed a few times and then it loaded! Looks awesome, excellent artwork!

Issues and Progress

Well, I ran into some issues this morning with collisions. I’m still not sure what I was doing wrong but I couldn’t get them to work correctly. I ended up just creating a 2D grid for the level and marking the grid with the locations of the objects so that I could detect a collision. This way is actually faster anyways and it works just right! Unfortunately, I wasted like and hour and a half trying to fix the other way before I did this. Oh well.

Here is a GIF of what I have so far:
