LD35

See y’all on the next LD (or Mini-LD)! :)

LD#35 is ending and it was a blast, even though I had so little time to develop the game. It was a blast, as always.

I wanted to play more games, but work happens :/…but I’ll keep playing the games! 😀

This one’s here is a video compiling some of the binaries I tested during the development of my game, using CT Fusion. Thanks to that, it was really quick to build this prototype. 😛

Thanks to everyone who commented and rated my LD#35 entry or those who just played the game!

Cheers! 😉

Thanks, again! :)

Due to the fact that I had limited time for the jam, I was expecting a lower score than the one I’ve received, so I’m quite happy with the overall score.

The “order” of scores I was aiming to (audio and fun leading my ratings) were reached, so kind of “objective accomplished”! :)

Thanks to everyone who played games, made games, commented, screamed and went crazy! As always, it was an amazing experience!

See you all on the next LD or Mini-LD! And let’s keep developing! I’m gonna keep playing LD#35 for a while! 😛 I’ll be watching some of you on Twitter to check the games you’re working! 😀

Thanks, congrats on surviving, and let’s survive the next one too! /o/

congratulations~nice score~!

LD36

For the 5th time in a row, I’m in! (I hope?)

Bring it on! I’ll take part in the jam again,  probably, because I’ll be out for most of the day on Sunday and I still have lots of webdev to do for clients.

This time, I won’t plan much, I’m going to try doing it mostly on impulse! So it might not give me the best project, but it might be fun to try and do it like this! Heck, I might even deliver an unfinished product, but at least I’m going to try hard to make it pretty fun! (well, if the theme allows me to :D)

I’m still deciding on what tool I’m gonna use, but the shortlist is:

  • Engine: GameMaker, Clickteam Fusion or HaxeFlixel;
  • Audio: BFXR (sounds), FL Studio (sequencing, multitracking, sound effects) and Wavosaur (recording and chopping) on the PC, AmpKit on the iPad for eventual guitar needs :P;
  • Graphics: whatever I have installed (CorelDRAW, Mischief, PyxelEdit, Swanky Paint, Krita);

I might recycle code from my previous entries on GitHub (https://github.com/yuigoto) and I might use some small libraries (control-related) and a blank template I usually start with (with just dummy, empty classes), which I’m gonna publish before LD. 😛

Good Luck, Everyone! Have Fun and drink some delicious coffee (but not much, believe me, it’ll suck if you do)!

Ludum Dare 37

I am in

Kinda skipped last time, but I’m in for this one! Hope this will, successfully, be my 5th entry. 😀

Gonna try using some tools I didn’t use much, so I’m probably gonna use Game Maker this time, since past entries were made with Haxe and Clickteam Fusion. Will also use some pre-made scripts for controls, calculations and stuff, that I wrote together with @ruerobgames and other stuff from tutorials. 😛

For graphics, I’m gonna try using Affinity Designer and Aseprite.

I’m gonna stick with my FL Studio/iPad + Ampkit 2 setup, with the addition of FL Studio Mobile on Android, for music and sfx, may use BFXR too.

Good luck for everyone! 😀

Almost there! I’m still in, I think? :P

Howdy! :)

I’m still in, no escape now, I hope I can come up with some good idea over here! 😀

Taking part in the jam, though, cause I might have stuff to do this weekend.

Decided on using GameMaker:Studio (v1) for it, might use some stuff from a small code library from mine and @ruerobgames‘ sandbox project. It’s called the SLAM (Small Library of Amazing Madness, though it’s not that amazing and not so mad) and you can find it here: https://bitbucket.org/hykyteam/the-slam (it’s just a bunch of code we reuse, stuff we test, things from tutorials and some junk code, not really a “game” :P).

Good Luck for Everyone! Cheers! :)

Almost there!

Had to cut down a lot of stuff, because I spent some time lazing aroung, but it’s coming up! :) The idea is pretty lazy by itself. XD Gotta finish some scoring and the timer and I’m done!

I’ll beef it up in the post-jam version, but I’m quite happy with the results in my entry.

It’ll be a game about being poor (or just a bit stingy). It’s called: “Rainwater (is free)” 😛

sixsided-rainwater-is-free

Phew! Did it! (and slept while writing this post :/)

So, after skipping LD36, thankfully I did finish my game! 😀

It didn’t come out 100% as I wanted to (hey, but what turns out like that, eh?), but I’m satisfied with the results! :)

Rainy days here in São Paulo also helped me write the game a bit. 😛

You can play my game by clicking here or in the image below! :)

Thanks! Good Luck for Everyone!

Now, gotta rest and then play/judge later! :)

I’m about to stream your game on Twitch. I’ll record it and give my opinion!

Just a small update on “Rainwater” :)

So, I kinda just finished a rushed version of my LDJAM game for Android! 😀

I did change the position of some UI items and instructions to fit the controls scheme on cellphones, but the game’s still the same. :) Will do some updates on the post-jam version later.

Thanks for everyone who played the game! I’ll make sure to rate and properly review your games too! Today work (real life work) was kinda tiring and some clients gave me too much stuff to do, but I’m hoping to play/review a lot of games! :)

Play Rainwater in your browser and download it for Windows or Android, click here!

Thanks and Cheers! :)

LD 38

I might be in...

I've got a lot of work to do, some reviews and refactoring. If some time (and inspiration) appears, I might take part in it. :wink:

Will probably use GameMaker or Clickteam Fusion, if I take part, since I didn't have much time to gamedev since I've started on my new job! :fearful: With the usual FL Studio, Wavosaur, Ampkit (iPad 2), ASEPrite, PyxelEdit and Affinity Designer/Photo for whatever.

Still, good luck for everyone taking (or not) part in this! :v:

Aaand I'm out...

No time for gamedev this weekend, got work to do (and some rest too) :(

Will start working on a proper "full" game also, so I'm kinda with a lot of stuff in my hands. :P

Still, good luck for everyone taking part! :) Looking forward to play the games! :D

LD 39

And I'm in (again, and I hope I see this to the very end!)

So, last LD I couldn't think about anything, neither I had the time to do it, since I was recently employed. But, NOW, I can! Since I was just laid off! :sweat_smile:

I know, it's nothing to commemorate, but better than stay moping around, I should lift myself and do something better, right? Also, it's always good for the portfolio! :wink:

I do expect the theme to be nice, but there's a probability that I won't follow the theme (not at least closely), so good LD for everyone! :P

My tools of choice will probably be:

  • Engine: GameMaker (either 1 or 2) or ClickTeam Fusion or Haxe (oh, yes, I'm ALWAYS indecisive like this);
  • Graphics: Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Aseprite and, my old pal, the DSi with Inchworm;
  • Audio: FL Studio, Sound Forge, BFXR, Cheap Guitars :guitar: and an old iPad running Ampkit;
  • Food (THIS IS NO TOOL, YOU FOOL! :drooling_face:): Kinda overweight and I need to take care of my health, so lo-carb, no excessive amounts of caffeine :coffee::confounded:, no gluten, no fried-food and no sugar (I just hope I don't have a bad taste :wink:);

Once again, good luck for everyone! Have fun doing your best! :upside_down:

Cheers!

LD is so close right now! Here are some GM control scripts!

With LD so close, and my mind freaking out about the theme, I realized I didn't do something I should've done last week, so here it is! :stuckouttongue:

These are some control scripts I made for GameMaker:Studio, might work fine on GMS2 too: - YX Control Scripts: are some control handling scripts, inspired by Derek Yu's Spelunky Classic control scripts, there's a bit more stuff, I tried cramming some 4 player setup and it's ready for control mapping/saving too (uses INI files); - YX Touch Controls: are some objects I used while I was porting the last LD entry I made (Rainwater (is Free)) to Android, they consist of an on-screen analog and button widgets you can use and watch for updates;

They're not the best stuff, there might be better ways to handle controls, but are the solutions I found would fit me better, it might work for you too! :wink: So feel free to use'em on your games!

And that's it! Back to my nail-biting hours before LD starts!

Good luck to y'all, have fun and some amazing gamedev there!

I'm really eager to make and play this time! :video_game:

Cheers!

Preparing...

Preparing myself for the LD! Gonna do some groceries, try to set up a very simple blog for logging the development. Probably gonna use GameMaker this time, again. :stuckouttongue:

Also, just set up an empty repo, and it's here: LD-39. Only a README and LICENSE now, but soon it'll have a game, right? :wink:

And, if you didn't see it, I made some GameMaker control scripts available in these repos here: - YX Control Scripts; - YX Touch Controls;

Feel free to use'em!

Good Luck Everyone! :smile:

On brainstorming ideas for a game jam...

Just posted this on my blog, but I do hope it helps some people out there.

20170729-on-brainstorming-ideas-for-a-jam.png

So, Ludum Dare 39 started roughly 2 hours ago, with the theme "running out of power". It's way past midnight here in São Paulo and, even though I thought about an idea or two, I'm still thinking about the ideas.

The concept of "power" is so broad you can easily get lost with what kind of power you should employ that's possible to run out. Also, with such a concept, it's also quite easy to end up with a not-so-original idea (think about some endless runners, or games like Concerned Joe or Move or Die).

So, here's some of my thoughts on how I'm brainstorming and how I think it's the right way to narrow down what you can do in your game:

  • Jot down ideas and concepts of power that you can think of, and think about what can you do with them, I'm pretty sure soon enough an idea will pop up;
  • Don't worry if your idea ends up not becoming too original, if the formula's been used, try to think of ways you can juice things within your abilities, try to make it a nice playable experience;
  • Once you have an idea and you start planning, or even working on it, work on the basics first, do what you need to have some basic gameplay on the concept you thought, make it a playable game, then start thinking about juicing it up;
  • If you end up stuck on one thing for too long, STOP, do other things, if you're coding, try to work on music (or listen to some), search for inspiration, try some art, but don't get too caught on things;
  • Rest a bit, don't force yourself to work if you're stuck, since it's bad in many ways and also quite frustrating, since things only start to fall down after that;

And that's it. It's not much, just what I believe are some "right" ways to do things, but nothing's 100% certain, right? You might think differently and that's fine too!

The important thing is that you should feel comfortable with your project and don't strain too much, even though there's a time limit.

Good luck on your project, if you're reading this, and Have Fun!

Testing some level generation here...

I'm testing some level generation from tutorials, like this one by Lewis Clark, which is based on Nuclear Throne/Wasteland Kings level generation, and the Heartbeast random level generator.

The game will be a bit simple and cliché, but let's stay on the safe side this time, since I didn't do much gamedev in the last few months. :stuckouttongue:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0HZNjeqmlc

Not much progress here, but will keep going! :)

Didn't make that much progress in here. Spent a LOT of time watching tutorials on level generation, camera and AI, so I'm in a tough spot here, but I'll keep going!

Thinking about a title for the game, but couldn't come out with something interesting, so the temp title is "Canisters" for now. ;)

I have some basic gameplay, with support for X360 controller! :D Now, gotta think about cutscenes! Anyone knows a good way to make RPG-style text dialogs in GameMaker for reference?

Thanks and Good Luck! :D

PLASMAGUN! - a post mortem for Ludum Dare 39

20170802-plasmagun-a-postmortem-01.png

So, I just finished writing my post-mortem for PLASMAGUN!, but it became so freaking huge, that I'm kinda afraid of posting it here, since it doesn't have that "Read More..." thing, like WordPress does.

So, if you don't mind, you can read it at my blog here: http://blog.yuiti.com.br/2017/08/02/plasmagun-a-post-mortem-for-ludum-dare-39/

Here's a small TL;DR of what I think was best and worst for me during LD:

The Worst
  • Chose a genre! Nice! But I changed genres as soon as I finished up coding the first style;
  • I changed the GameMaker version I was using DURING the development;
  • I also ended up watching too many tutorials and doing them all, instead of filtering stuff I needed;
  • Besides making lots of projects, I kept using the 1st version of GM to prototype;
  • I left finishing the story, graphics, music and audio, to an extent, to the very end.
The Best
  • The theme was favourable to me, so reaching a decision on an idea was easier;
  • I could keep my calm way better than previous jams;
  • I had the opportunity to use GameMaker Studio 2 (and learn a LOT from the experience);
  • I also had a lot of fun recording and making the music and sound effects for the game;
  • The game, even not 100% as I wanted, with all its faults, has a replay factor to me.

Thanks for checking out, and Good Luck for Everyone! :smile:

Also, here's a timelapse:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVHPCDrdnrk

Thank you for playing! ;)

So, results are in and I'm worse than the last one I took part. But, hey, that's ok! Since I kinda thought things were far too rushed this time for me (and I did spend a lot of time watching tutorials) it was expected.

But I'm really grateful for the feedback, so thanks to everyone who played my project and left a comment or pointed some of its faults! :thumbsup:

And I didn't want to promote this while voting was going on, but since it's over now, after I finished my project here for LD, I joined the LOWREZJAM and built some kind of a post-jam version of my game, which is kind of a mix between a demake/remake! :sweat_smile:

I've attemped to correct some of the things I thought were faulty in the LD version, but there's a lot to work upon still. But bots number increase and on further levels different types of bots appear! :smile:

This version is called PLSMGN! (because PLASMAGUN! was too big for 64x64). If anyone wants to check it out, you can download it here: https://yuigoto.itch.io/plsmgn.

Here's a video on this remake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmsQlpIKK3Q

Thanks again, everyone! ;)

LD 40

I am in! (I think)

Last LD I was recently laid-off, this time I just got some new jobs! :D Work has been piling up, though, and I don't know if I'll be able to make it, since I'm in quite a rush to finish a website until next Monday! :sob:

I hope the theme will be a good one too! ;)

Will take part in the Jam again, and will be using GameMaker Studio 2 (or 1, who knows), Aseprite, Affinity Designer/Photo, FL Studio, AmpKit and whatever I can make use of! ;)

I'll also use one of these libraries I wrote for controllers in GM, is possible: - Controller Scripts: https://github.com/yuigoto/yx-gm-control-scripts; - Touch Controller Scripts: https://github.com/yuigoto/yx-gm-touch-controls;

This is the allmighty empty repo I'll be using! Look at how empty it its! https://github.com/yuigoto/yx-jam-LD-40

Good luck and have some great fun making games y'all! ;)

And I'm Out :(

Lots of work piled up this time again, I won't be able to do everything in less that 10 hours. Will take part in other jams still.

I just wished my clients weren't pressuring me to deliver things by tomorrow :confounded:

Good luck for everyone there! I hope you're all having fun! ;)
