Ludum Dare 54 September 29–October 2, 2023

Get hyped!

Modeling random stuff in blender for practice, although I'm not sure I'll actually make a 3d game. We'll see, based on the theme. Planning to join the compo so I better get re-familiarized with making programmer art. I haven't felt this excited about anything for years  It'll be a lot of fun! And most of the themes are pretty good! Have fun y'all. Get hyped!

We will see what happens...

At the beginning of the week I was ready to do this jam. However, the last week at work was an internal Hackathon which was super fun but it's left me feeling way more exhausted than I thought it would haha so I think I am gonna be doing the Extra format instead so I can recover lol

First post, first game, first Ludum Dare

Hello everyone, this is my first jam. I hope it will be fun, educational and productive. GL HF! Go to sleep:)

Theme poll update

THEME POLL!

Select which themes you voted +1 for and see the live results! This is just for fun and usually doesn’t predict the winner, but I enjoy doing it. It’s a flawed system since it doesn’t consider -1 votes, but again, it’s just for fun.

Take the poll HERE

Free Songs?!?! O:

HI!

A few years ago, I had an amazing Monster Collection and Battle Fangame I worked on in RPGMaker XP - that was before I could program, but I was still very proud of my accomplishments. The Lawyers™ came though, and this particular sphere was smashed up pretty badly.

I didn't release anything by that point, but of course I now had a doomed weekend project, which kind of made me angry, then sad, then made me realize I "simply" could work on my own world, which kind of led to me discovering Godot, learning to program, retraining from teacher to being a programmer and here I am now.

The graphical assets from that time are mostly useless without context (also I was even a worse artist back then lol), though the music kind of makes me happy to this day. For that reason I decided to give it to the world for free. Even did a little Player widget thingie with which you can preview each song before committing to a download o:

tl;dr: Songs you are free to use for the Jam! Wowie!

While we are waiting

thumbnail.png

Just finished new prototype. It's mix of base-defense and twin-stick-shooter. I'm looking for any feedback to improve the game. So if you have couple minutes while we are waiting for theme, you can try and leave feedback.

You can play it here: https://neltile.itch.io/the-core

Thanks in advance

We're in (4 year anniversary)

Almost 4 years to the day me and @Pegasys created our first game together, not long after having started University. Now 4 years later we are both full-time Software Engineers and are about to make our 5th consecutive entry.

Some very interesting themes here. I'm personally hoping for Signal or Salvage. Once again I implore you to not vote for Shelter. It's almost as bad as harvest was. But regardless I hope we all have a fun Ludum Dare.

Here are the tools we will be using.

Engine: Unity Art: Photoshop and Aesprite Sound: Audacity and sfxr

I'm In Again

This will be my 8th Ludum Dare. Hopefully I've learnt something in that time. This weekend is a bit busy but will see how it goes.

Tools I'll be using. Engine: Unity Art: Paint.net Sound: sfxr and Bosca Ceoil

First time attendee

This will be my first attempt at a ludum dare game jam. I did a smaller game jam with a team once a few years ago, but haven't coded in a while. Let's see how this goes.

I'm In

As a Unity refugee and aspiring 🦀🦀 Rustacean 🦀🦀, I'll be doing this jam using the Bevy Game Engine!

I've always been interested in true ECS systems and Bevy seems like it's a great way to get into it! I've just finished up my first lil test game with it (a remake of the old flash game "Avalanche", remember that one?? so fun), and so far I'm loving it!

After about 12 years of doing solely object-oriented game development, it was certainly a significant hurdle to jump but now that I've got some momentum, I'm really starting to enjoy it!! Though I haven't learned assets or audio yet, so I imagine my LD entry will not have any proper graphics aside from some basic shapes, nor any music/sfx.

Any other Rust game jammers out there?? Let me know so I can check out your entry!

A new challenger has appeared!

Hello! I’m in for Ludum Dare 54 giving my first attempt at a game jam ever!

I’m a bit of an amateur when it comes to programming and only have one game under my belt, but the idea of the challenge just seemed appealing. I’m not certain if I’ll actually come out of this with a finished product, but I’m going to give it my all in the 72 hr jam.

Also going to use this as my swan song for Unity before moving on to Godot. Now seems like a great time to see what else is out there in the universe.

Really excited to see what comes from it and I look forward to trying out all of your games in the ratings!

I'm in!

2nd time around, should be easier right?

Trying out a new style

So, I have an idea for a game that involves a lot of environments and backgrounds. Unfortunately since I don't have an artist this time, and don't have a drawing tablet or any screen to draw on larger than my phone, making backgrounds digitally is very difficult for me. So I tried my hand at Kritashopping and bashing many stock photos together to see if I could make something that looks half-decent:

kitsch.png

I was going for a kitsch, collage, cottagecore kind of vibe and I think I got it, it's VERY corny JKDSJKDAS. Also kinda looks like a Mr Beast thumbnail but oh well. I'm still not sure if this is what I'm going to stick with for the final game, but it's definitely efficient. The source images are all from Unsplash, so I have the rights to use them, it took me about 1 hour to complete, and in case I don't have time, I can just use the paper sketches as graphics, which take just 5 minutes max to make.

Actually my original plan was just to take a picture of the paper sketch and color it digitally, but I found that to be too difficult.

If anyone has any opinions on the style or their own techniques for making graphics efficiently, I'd love to hear them!

I'm in! LD54!

Time to learn Godot! This will be an interesting first project for Godot!

Almost time!

Drew a little something in anticipation. Feel free to use as wallpaper!

Jumping In!

No better way to learn to swim than jumping in the deep end! This will be the first time I participate in a Game Jam as well the first time I will be making a game using Godot. Hopefully I don't end up drowning and I can't wait to see what everyone ends up making.

I'm in!

This will be my first Compo.
