Ludum Dare 54 September 29–October 2, 2023

I'm In ? + Self Promotion

Time for another LD. I just launched my 2nd game 2 weeks ago and I am not sure if I am ready for a 48 game jam. Probably a much smaller scoped game this time round.

Setup

Tips/Advice

As usual, tips for new jammers, and tips that I sometimes don't follow LOL.

  1. You have 48 hours (72 for Jam), but in reality you only have about 20 hours.
  2. Despite having only 20 hours, spend 1 to 2 hours planning and thinking out what you want to do. It is worse when you realised your idea is a bad one a few hours into development.
  3. Plan out your scope and cut it by half. At the end of the first day, cut whatever is left by half again. (If are new, you might want to cut it by 75%).
  4. Identify your MVP, and beeline to a it ASAP. It is more satisfying to add to something playable, than to just blindly stare at code. Ideally by the end of the first day, you should have the core loop finished; core loop being menu -> game -> gameover/victory.
  5. Spend your last 2-3 hours playing the game, fixing bugs and balancing instead of adding more features.
  6. Don't make your game too hard. Most people will give up after 5 minutes.
  7. If you can, have a browser build. It is easier for people to try your game, and it will have less issues.

Personal Goal

As I have just launched my 2nd game (see below), I am looking for something to commit to for my 3rd game. I will be prototyping some ideas :) hopefully I can find my next project either from this jam or the next.

Shameless Plug

During LD52, I made a card drafting game inspired by Luck be a landlord. The game just launched about 1.5 weeks ago :). The game is call "Crop Rotation" and some of you might have heard about it :). Do check it out on Steam if you haven't.

Hello everyone!

So, it's my first ever game jam and it's going to be my first game ever. And I'd be honest, I'm kinda worried and scared. But I have been waiting for it for several months and I hope we will be able to deliver something! Current tools of trade: * Aseprite or Clip Studio for art * 2bitDragon for music * Godot as an engine

And planning to spend this week mastering other new tools to get ready and planing out the plot and ideas with my significant other. Wish us luck, as much as I wish it to yall! Hopefully this would be an unforgettable experience

Mixamo and compo

Is Mixamo allowed for creating animations during the compo? Or even the animation has to be done during the 48h?

Using Godot 4.0 in a 3D platformer

A platformer is bread and butter for a game jam. I found this set of videos perfect for using Godot 4.0 in building a really great platformer

Themes slaughtered! And a bit of advice for coming up with jam themes

Screenshot 2023-09-25 at 12.04.30.png Heh, nice.

It's a little bit too late now, but a couple of good theme sanity checks are: - Can I think of three ideas for this theme that are all completely different? - What is the most obvious take on this theme? Do I want to play that game 100 times? - Is it a genre? If it is, put it directly in the bin and take a good hard look at what led you to this moment. Repeat after me until it sinks in: A genre is not a theme. A genre is not a theme. A genre is not a theme.

I run at least two jams that have >1,000 participants a year - coming up with a theme is HARD, but these little sanity checks will help!

I'm ready!

wormup.png Even though I can only sketch simple outlines right now, each Ludum Dare helps me improve. Thanks to Ludum Dare and everyone involved. hopping to create something truly fun to play this time.let's go!!

Here we go

Ludum Dare was the first time I actually finished a small game while learning unity, seems only fair to do the same while I check out if Godot is up to snuff.

TextToSpeech?

I am going to enter the Compo. If I write the dialog, is it OK to generate voices using software or do I need to do all the voices myself?

Greetings!

So, this is going to be my first ever jam and first ever game I'm going to make. And I'd be honest, I'm a little anxious. Scared, even. But I have been waiting for it for months, and I hope to get as much positive and valuable expirience as possible. I know some basic stuf for now, but hopefully during the jam I would learn many new things and make some new connections and memories!

Current tools of trade: * Aseprite or Clip Studio Paint for art * 1bitdragon for music * Godot as an engine

And planning to find and learn some other tools for things such as fx and sound design while waiting for jam to start. Wishing everyone good luck and hopefully someone would wish me (and my partner, who is going to help me with plot) some too!

Something simple (I have no idea what I'm doing)

Going to try do something simple in Godot 4. With graphics edited with pixilart.com and maybe create some simple sounds by recording them my self either from my synth or with microphone and what not and editing it with Tenacity. 🤷

Like always the biggest problem probably is that the event starts 01:00 AM for me... lets see how I can tackle this time.

First Ludum Dare!!

Ahoy!! I intended to compete earlier this year during the April Jam, but my Uni had finals then.. I'm planning on using my favorite tiny game engine, pico8, for the jam. I'm an avid Godot Fan but also because of Uni I haven't been able to mess with 4 enough. I'm excited to get another project rolling, please check out my other work at https://brimlessgames.itch.io/ if you feel inclined, or the pico 8 engine itself! Let's Jam!!

-Leo

Ahoy!

Hello everyone! My name is Leo, and I am a game dev studying computer science. My favorite engines are Pico8 because of it's cute scale and ability to prototype little projects (and the 8bit scale helps my programmer art not look so bleh, but talented pixel artists can really make some neat stuff!!) and the Godot game engine. I haven't used Godot 4 yet, but I'm an old hand with 3, and I've really enjoyed it's structure as well as open source nature. I am inspired by Space! My favorite movie is Interstellar, and while I'm not a die hard Musk enthusiast I believe that exploring the stars would be both terrifying and exciting. I also like the Sea! I've been fascinated with the ocean for as long as I can remember. I haven't learned how to sail yet, but hopefully once that Midlife crisis hits I'll be onboard a ship, sailing around the world.

I've made a few small game projects, you can play them on my itch.io page here: brimlessgames.itch.io. I made 24/7 Support this summer and I'd like to finish it someday, but such is the life of one in uni.

Thanks for reading, and good luck on the jam!!

I'm in but a bit more casually this time

Because I have things to do on the Saturday morning and Sunday evening. Total amount spent on game making will be about 10-15 hours, something like that.

By the way, is the 948x533 definition still relevant for embedding web games here?

Something simple in Godot 4

I started learning Godot as a replacement for Unity just over a week ago(for obvious reasons) but was planning to enter this before hand so I may as well try, this is also my first time working on a game with someone else.

Can we start the round voting please?

Maybe it's an hour away from starting but isn't it usually 3 rounds of voting and then a final round? If we start soon, we can have 1 day for each.

Looking forward to it! (I guess in the meantime I'll slaughter a few more themes.)

O00ooof

I have changed a bit my method to identify what could be a good theme ... and wondered, if there is not something wrong with the suggested themes.

I don't hate you or despise your ideas ... your suggestions are just not themes most of the time. Indeed there are a lot of good game concepts, story plots, game mechanics, twists, genre innovations and what not ... pls put them in your games, not in the themes suggestions.

LD_54 Slaughtered.png

btw. I enjoyed your jokes

Done

now I told myself I would cap out at 100, then for the last 100 themes I would take it slow incase there were any that really popped, 1 did.

though thinking back there were maybe 4 in total that really popped to me, next time I'll probably cut myself down to 25 keeps.
