Ludum Dare 54 September 29–October 2, 2023

As is required by Ludum Dare law, I hereby declare that I am, indeed, in!

I'm back once again for some sweet, sweet LD action. Oh yeah!

I'll be joined by the awesome @tegantiu and @lenny-rudeberg so this will be a NoseyBeaks game!

We're using:

Engine: Godot 4

Art: Aseprite

Sound: SFXR

Music: Logic X

Fuel: Puppies' tears

It should be fun!

Now, where did I put those puppies...

In for my first Ludum Dare!

Super excited to participate in my first Ludum Dare after multiple back-to-back jams on itch.io.

Going to rely on ~~Unity~~ and my brain :smiling_imp: as my main tools. Super pumped and ready to have fun!

Our first jam

I'll be joining with two friends, a fellow programmer and an artist, and this'll be all of our first game jam! I'm equal parts nervous and excited. It'll be 2d, made with Godot 4, and have cute art. The rest will depend on the theme. I'll be posting our progress so Mike can judge if I'm human or not :D

How I Took the Leap: LD with Zero Game Dev Experience and a Week to Learn

Hey everyone,

I just started my journey into game development this past Sunday, prompted by a challenge from a friend who dared me to participate in the upcoming Ludum Dare event. With the motivational quotes of David Goggins and Nick Eh 30 echoing in my mind - 'Never Back Down, Never What?' - I decided to take the plunge.

Unlike many of you, I have zero experience in game development, but I do bring about six years of backend C# development under my belt. My Ludum Dare goals are as follows:

  1. Create and publish a game, even if it's only somewhat finished, in The COMPO section.
  2. (This one might be a bit ambitious) Beat my friend's score and prove to him that around three years of commercial gamedev experience (a total of six years in software development) and multiple LD entries can be outshined by talent and a deep understanding of games, something I like to think of as a natural-born gamer's advantage.
  3. Learn the ropes of game development and relish the entire process.

I'm learning the ins and outs of my chosen engine and how things work during my spare time, juggling work and other responsibilities. This means I'll have limited options for what I can create, but I firmly believe that with some creativity and a simple concept, I stand a chance at making a decent mini-game. Whether I'm being overly optimistic or not, we'll soon find out, so stay tuned!

Here's what I'm planning to use:

  • Engine: Godot 4
  • Editor: JetBrains Rider

Let's embark on this journey together!

UPD I did it, results

Third Time's The Charm? I'm in!

This'll be my 3rd LD, and 8th Game Jam! Looking forward to jamming with Arjahn Fasenfefer and Tommy Bradly in a three-person team, gearing up slowly.

I'm in!

Another LD baby, it's time to forget about all life's problems for 3 days and just do what I love to do!

I'm in

Customary 'I'm in' post.

I'll be using Unity and probably Blender and Audacity :8ball:

My round 1 themes opinions

obrazem2023-09-27/em124643114.png

Locks and keys - can generate some decent gameplay mechanics, but feels to generic (a lot of games have doors, keys, etc)

Keep the light on - This theme forces you to use light in your game. Not all games genres even have light

You are the enemy - very "game-jamy" theme. Even too game-jamy. It's a typical theme with a twist, but I think it was overused over the years

Underground - enforces a specific setting. I don't want to play 20 games taking place in underground caves

Sanctuary - same as above. Playing every game inside sanctuaries will become boring

Folklore - another setting enforcing theme. This time it makes all game take place in old stories

Signal - potentially creative take for games. Signal can have so many meanings that we will end up with a lot of diverse games

Tiny Creatures - too limiting. Half of the games will be Tamagochi clones, other half will be Pokemon clones

Reflect - another theme with multiple interpretations. It will make most games original and diverse

Metamorphosis - not as good as "signal" and "reflect", but it still has a potential for many different games

Echoes - I didn't come up with a game idea on the first sight of this theme, so I believe it will make us create some unexpected and creative games

Decay - on the one hand it may generete some good gameplay mechanics. On the oher hand I think that it forces creating mostly damaged, corrupted enviroments which will result in less diverse games

Pick your poison - another theme with mixed opinion. May potentially generate diverse mechanics, but also has a "downgrades, not upgrades" vibe

Consume - this theme can have many different meanings and interpretation, making it a very good theme

Witchcraft - another setting enforcing theme. I don't like it

Shelter - this theme has been suggested for at least 5 years. Please stop. It's boring

These are my opinions about round 1 themes. What are yours?

I'm in again!

No surprises since it's my 15th LD in a row! I have learned a few things that may help you if you are just starting with game jams:

  • Sleep well! The more you sleep, the better game you make!

  • Don't be stressed too much because of the theme. It's quite likely you won't like it ;) But the theme is not the most important thing. If you lack inspiration, just make a game you'd like to make, and the theme will always somehow blend in. Also, the theme constraint often forces you to make something you wouldn't make otherwise, which is often a good thing!

  • And most importantly, have fun! At the end of the day, the jam is all about you having fun :)

    Good luck!

First time participating

Always wanted to do one of these but never got around to it. Out on a whim, decided to try this year. Lets see how much I'll end up doing with my weekend being busy. But I'll try my best. Gives me an opportunity to figure out Godot at least.

Am I prepared for LD54?

No. Will I try it anyway?

Yes!

Feels like last week that I was speed coding at the end of LD53. This time I won't have all days completely free, but I hope the experience gives me some advantage

Some things I learned from my first jam to keep in mind: - Don't negligence sound. If you leave it to the end you probably won't put it at all - Keep your scope low. If you think your idea is simple enough it probably is too complicated, you can always do more if you have time, but if you aim too high you might end up with a half-baked game - Don't forget to rest and relax. I think I did a pretty good job at not burning myself out last time, but it's always nice to remember, take some time to rest and relax, if you're stressed or starting to feel burnt out you won't work as well

I Promise

I'm In This Time

I've said this a few times but my kids tend to get most of my attention, but I think this weekend stars may align.

Tools:

  • Monogame
  • Aseprite and maybe procreate (might try it)
  • FL
  • Audacity

Maybe the first LDJam

it's lucky in China. i can start my game at 6:00

Third time's the charm

This will be my third time attempting LD, hopefully the second publishing a somewhat finished game here. My main goal this time is trying for a small enough scope so I can try my hand at having some sound this time. I'll be aiming for the compo, but realistically will be entering the jam and will share the code either way.

Anyways, what I'm planning to use: - Engine: Godot 4.1 - Art: Blender 3.6 - Audio: Mercury Live Coding Environment - Others: pure desperation

I'm thinking of doing some mixed art project, and if so I'll be drawing on my tablet as well with whatever free software I'm using at the moment. If so, I'll specify on the game page then. For the audio, I'm always jumping from one live coding language to another, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using Mercury this time. I know it's not exactly made for this, but I'm really bad with the usual audio programs, and coding my music is really fun.

Here's to not burning myself out and being able to respond to all comments this time!

Looking for a writer and others to join our team

I’m joining this jam with a team of 2 people so far:

  • Me
  • Voice Actor

We are looking for a writer because a story driven game would be a good idea since we have a pro voice actor. I'm gonna use Godot with C# for this project so if you have experience in those instead do let me know!

DM me on Discord -> hugimugi

Here’s some games I’ve done in earlier jams: 57204.png

Lukky

This guy is just the best. He is an excellent developer and an avid user of Godot.

Here he shows the simplicity of making a cut-scene in Godot 4

And here we go.

We are going again! Last time we did Kobold fishing, and it was the first time I was doing a jam, I have gotten a lot better I think so lets see what we can do this time. It's always fun or maybe sometimes it makes you want to pull your hair out, but it is a blast ether way! Lets go!

Hello World!

This is the very first post of our team to test the post! :)
