Can’t Finish

Damn, I would have had enough time to complete my game if it weren’t for other family matters. It sucks that this will be the second Ludum Dare that I have to miss, but hopefully next time I can have full independence and work all 2 days. Oh well…

Happens. Happened to my last dare… Don’t worry, plus you can still work on your game for practice! So next dare your ready. haha

Finally Picking up the Pace

Hey guys,

It took some time, but I’m finally starting to see how my entry could turn into something cool ^^. Here’s what my game looks like now:

(I control the orange dog-like creatures and I’m fighting the weird plant dudes)

The game is going to be about surviving as a species. You run around, fight guys and collect food. By carefully selecting who gets to have children you control the evolutionary process of your species.

Now it’s time to make me some dinner!

Cheers,

Maxim

First LD!

Hiya guys!

It is high time to present myself, I guess…

So, it’s my first LD, first post!

Currently I’m working on a sci-fi game. I won’t describe much because it is far from its final form (I hope I’ll deal with it).

The main hero is a strange, unstable mass from Mars. It evolves very quickly, that’s why people are curious about it.

Moreover, it seems it can be somehow controllable by human race.

Obviously, they (we?) soon arrange special fights (like Pokemon fights) to determine who is the great mass dominator!

First screen :)

As you can see, the game doesn’t look special so far (still a lot to do).

It’s (going to be) a simple strategy-puzzle game, where player will have to beat computer (hmm, rather to get as many points as possible, I don’t belive I create competitive AI).

I’m using old flash + audacity + sfxr.

Think I’ll also need the help of GIMP and… Guitar Pro :)

As it is my first entry, I won’t cry if I don’t finish it before Monday! Though I won’t give up easily :)

Ok, back to work. See ya soon!

Our entry, ‘Revolution’

Hi all,

This is an art dump for mine and my brothers game idea ‘Revolution’

A teaser description of our idea: You spawn on the inside of a circle, headless, and all you seem to be able to do is run. You run around the inside of the circle, and then you see something fading into existance as you reach 1 full revolution. It’s a mask! A very poorly made mask but a mask nonetheless, you put it on and when you channel your energy through it, a knife appears! floating and disembodied, how useful! especially since an enemy seems to have just spawned… headless, and what you think looked like an ‘R’, but it faded. You put your knife to work on the poor guy and you are alone once more. You run around a bit and as you reach another revolution you see, yes! another mask! You decide that this one looks noteably nicer, so you put it on and channel your energy through it again. A sword appears! and around the other side of the circle, another headless little guy, and a guy with a knife and a very familiar looking mask, one with an ‘R’ above him, and the other with an ‘E’ and they both seem to be coming towards you…

Basic Combat added!

Combat has been added with slimes! Character / enemy knockback when hit! Enemies die! Next I should work on a message system for text and a GUI for health!

Actually starting to code

Considering how ambitious my idea is, I really shouldn’t have waited this long to start coding! About 30 hours left in the jam, and I’m gonna need some sleep… so yeah, tricky.

I’m committing my code to my github as I write it, so if you ever want to see what I’m working on during the jam, just look there!

https://github.com/MattRix/madness

GeneRogue? any way i guess i’m in too =)

hi all, i guess i’m a bit late this time, sorry about that. 2nd ludumdare for me and of course Löve2D framework again =) Obey!

(+gimp, sfxr, scite, github)

When searching around a bit i already found over 40 people using löve : https://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10645

Btw, according to the ludum-dare rules “porting” is allowed after the deadline, so if you’re interested in the experimental web-player for löve and get stuck with something, there are a few tips in the above thread, and i’ll also try to help if you ask questions there, but it prolly won’t work for all games due to some technical restrictions. See thread for details.

Last ludumdare i was in jam with hagish and science, this time i’m gonna try solo =)

So far the idea is :   Death is part of the game! no means to restore hp, and the “upgrades” for attack and defense you can collect don’t help yourself but only your offspring. Assuming you can reach the next nesting ground before dying that is =)

I’d also like to play around a bit with random-dungeon generation, at least in a simple form with random rooms, so it might become a bit roguelike, hence the current working title =) Not sure if i’ll get around to that tho.

So far not much to see except a few programmer-art-like graphics :

We are working hard, changing a few details.
Here is the progress of the project.

First day news

Hi, LD folks. So, first day is gone. I have done a few playable things. My game is a 2d-platformer with orthodoxal man as main hero. He is called St. Marvin, his target – Dr. Darwin. St. Marvin vs Darwin. Ok?

I’m going to put timelapse in public, but not now. Because of my shitty 3g-connection, it’s such a PITA to use it, but there is no alternative in my parents house, where I’m spending my holidays. Good luck everyone!

14 hours of work…

… and this is what I have so far:

The game is about death being the most important part of evolution. Only the smart and fast species will survive in this death table hockey game, where the player has to smash all the “not survival” species 😉

So I have an idea!

Well I had it awhile ago, but I got angry and lost in my hacked together attempts of doing it quickly (and on a livestream no less, oh the humiliation) and went back to paper for the design.

Now I have a ridiculously modular set of code, which is neat, and can start on the game part without feeling like committing acts of penance. My idea is pretty simple. I didn’t want to make you fight something that evolved, too complicated to do in code and too boring to hack in level design. Then I realised, Evolution is Adaptation.

So I decided to go back to the arcade way of making games. Hordes of enemies, kill them all. Arcade style top-down shooters, yay! And where’s the evolution? Whenever you die, you get to go back to the drawing board and tweak the stats of your ship. Ultimately it becomes a score attack, find the best ship to combine with your skills to get the highest score. Too many fast enemies on that level? You could just increase your ships size, decreasing speed but giving it more resistance to damage allowing it to crash through the enemies and just soak up the damage.

Or why not decrease the size and super-charge the boosters? You’ll be brittle as heck, but you can use your enhanced speed to match, dog-fight and dodge the enemies.

That’s where I’m going with this. Maybe now I have a cleaner code base (Using a surprisingly Service-orientated architecture) I can actually start making stuff happen. *gasp* Heresy!

Reset

1 day and 5 hours left. perfect time to set all my script aside and start over. What I did have so far: Camera/player movement, basic NPC’s some grahics, and than I added jumping and found out that I made a big mistake with the camera/player movement…

Zet ‘m op!

One more game

Let’s do this again, my first game for Ludum after the traffic accident i was victim of ,during the LD23!

First day of the ludum… Great !

So, I’m very happy of this first day developping my game.

Your objective will be to destroy a human … but you’re just a disease ! :)

This night I would create the sounds and music of the game. And here is some screenshots ^^

See you tomorow !

Current progress..

The main coding is almost done! I need to polish the variables for a smooth gamplay and start to do the art/music/sfx.. Flashpunk is very good!

current progress

Derp.

ATM i’m doing a bit of “art”work. I think i’ll go with menu that has only 2 colors. Below is a mashup of what it’d probably look like.

Looks kinda smooth, doesn’t it?

So far so good

Well. Here I am in the middle of my first Ludam Dare and I’m not feeling to bad. I was aiming to get a good nights sleep and not worry about the theme until the morning but my son woke up at 2AM and I was foolish enough to check the theme.

After a few hours of non-sleep and a freakish dream in which Robert Smith of The Cure asked me to play drums in a show tomorrow (I don’t play drums) I got to work on trying to come up with a game.

I’ve got to say that I’m riffing on the theme somewhat, but I’m doing what feels right for me. Hopefully it will be self explanatory. Well, if it’s not I’ll post about it.

Anyway, I have a basic level and the underlying engine in a semi-working state and I’ve spent the last couple of hours away from code and working on the music. Time for some tea and back to it.

Here’s a screenie of work so far.

woah, ein richtiges festmahl 😀 plus ein glas wein!

The small things

Hooray!

It’s tiny, it’s in the wrong place, and it’s not that pretty but I finally managed to spit out a tiled map!  Note: this isn’t one picture but rather a map of tiles.

The GameMap class still needs plenty of work, but it’s finally doing something!

Next up is to finish off this class, and then get a player down on that bad boy.  Once I have some more basic map functionality in, I think I’m going to actually make up some graphics for the menus.

The little things…

Some Progress

Alright, here’s what I’ve got so far of my game, which is tentatively titled “Petri Dish Empire”. Here is my (partially successful) attempt to breed something that is actually dangerous.

First progress report

We’re a couple Belgians working on our second game. Previous Ludum Dare we finished 6th in the Theme(Jam) category. This time we aim higher!

After a long brainstorming session and a couple of hours of coding, we’ve got our first prototype.

Look at all those pretty colours

This is me kicking the AI’s ass. Needs some improving, or does it?

Half finished, apparently.

Ha ha! Alt Text! This is where I stand as of now. About half the time I have is past, and here’s what I have to show for it.

Some of these are placeholder graphics, which is to say, the yellow resource is really ugly. And hopefully there will be an actual character sprite at some point, though I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Results of the first day

name of project: Natural Selection: breeding by God.

an idea: You are a God. You have just water, minerals and sun light. You should create perfect life.

The game will be similar to games like Alchemia and Doodle God.

Today I drawn about 50 items and invented ways to creating them.

I think there will be a few of code. Tomorrow I’ll write it.

Behold! The Worst game on ld24!

So here is my progress so far

You can even have some fun here. For example: you can scare a duck or collect some of this yellow things…

Don’t be so hard on yourself. My game doesn’t even have images yet. :)

Progress

I have made some progress on my very fancy game whose technological sophistication will STUN you.

More importantly, now I’m back into the swing of things, so I’ll probably be able to go faster from here on out. I’ll need to…

So far so good

Made in construct 2

Working in a team of 4 for The Jam. So far so good !

1st LD :)

Cutscene working!

Got the cutscene fully working, I just hope it works the same on every computer. Since I don’t have a videocard, it might be working well here, but not that well on better computers..

http://www.livestream.com/yinsludumdare

Evolution progres

I have decided to do something like game evolution rather than evolution in game.

As you first start game, you are presented with classical game – snake.

This is full snake game:
– Sound effects and music
– Collecting points makes you longer
– Collision detection (border and self)
– Explosion of collision

This will serve as introduction to main game.

— Game has evolved — (you will have to discover how to evolve the game yourself)

This is “After Evolution” snake game. It’s maze like game but more research is required to get to finish.

This game features:
– Time limit
– Light effects
– Beacons
– Power-ups
–  etc.

Tell me if you want to try it!

Quick progress update

I’m doing a pre-emptive progress update, because I plan to buckle down and carry on working into the night. I’m glad Evolution finally had its day, but strangely, I’ve had an incredibly hard time coming up with something that could be *fun*. So I’ve put myself in the dangerous position of trying to discover a game idea as I go. Yikes.

What I have so far is the start of a puzzle-platformer in which you control a bunch of ‘meebas’ and try to get a group of them to evolve as a whole, in order to reach the exit. If I knew how to play this game I would explain more…

Onwards!

Pixels through time update!!!!

i have made progress!!! i broke the engine and i cant get the background to work!!!!!!

Pimp my deoxyribonucleic acid

I’m in and everything. Quick pitch :

Platypu$$y, the pimp platypus. Evolution has fucked him quite bad, so he’s angry and decide to tweak his own DNA

Beautiful art :

YAY GIB’S IN!

Progress Report #1

first shot of game so far

Well, the theme I almost abandoned is now in full swing. The core mechanics are just about final, I think. Now for the visual polish, some sound, and level creation phase.

I’ve Gotta Stop Playing with These FISH!

They aren’t even what I’m planning to put in the game. These fish are placeholders based on a simple scribble.

It took me way too much time to figure out how to select an isometric tile with the mouse coordinates. Thanks charlie for the suggested reading, I must have read a half-dozen tutorials and it looks like I do iso differently than half of the people who wrote articles. Sines, cosines? What? The math turned out to be pretty simple, and then I had to align the odd alternate tile because the mouse was only picking one half of the map. Grr. It’s working fine now, everything can be selected intuitively. Gameplay will be next, and finish the control scheme/creature attributes. That should be easy.

So, here I am, playing with fish, wasting valuable time. I got frustrated, and I’ll get over it. This game is going to rock! And there’s a little more than one day left to complete it. I can do this. Just hit a roadblock, it’s behind me.

Tags: coffee, Fish, frustration, overcoming obstacles, plans, roadblocks, wasting time

Halfway through day 1…

…and nothing’s actually written yet. I spent the afternoon doing my real job, but I was thinking about how to make the climate-change part of my game work, which I expect to be the hardest part.  So now this evening I’ll see if my idea can actually be made to work. The idea is this: The climate is always changing, with only brief periods of stability. You have an animal (species) consisting of a head, body, front limbs, and back limbs, all drawn from a pool of assorted real animals — for instance, a bear head, lizard body, eagle wings, and deer back legs. Each body part is better or worse in different climates. For each body part, you can hold on to what you’ve got, or dump it and hope to draw something better (like video poker).

Current Progress: Basic game mechanics are done

Whew! That was a hard bunch of work, lots of maths (and I _hate_ maths!) but the basic game mechanics are done now. Now comes the gameplay (Levels, Level progress, automatic difficulty generation and stuff like that). Here is the latest screenshot:

  • There are now powerups that make you move faster
  • There are “bad” mobs that absorb everything, even if they’re smaller then you. Pretty damn annoying if you run into such a thing
  • Arrows indicate whether there are any special mobs nearby
  • Added particles for a bit of atmosphere, I’ll probably do more in that direction later

I’m surprised that it still renders totally smooth on my machine (while streaming at the same time). HTML5 + Canvas are more powerful than I thought.

Latest playable version is available here: http://saschagehlich.github.com/ld24/ (Currently only tested with Chrome, should work in Firefox and Safari as well though). You can move with the arrow keys, zoom out with + and – keys (Only tested on my MBP, I heard that the keyCodes are changing depending on the OS and browser. I’ll look into that later)

It works fine in Firefox 10 on Linux – though zooming doesn’t work for me (I have a german keyboard, maybe that’s the reason). Looks very cool, very smooth!

isn’t it like Osmos?
MortalWombat
25. Aug 2012 · 18:52 UTC
That’s what i thought, too.

Maybe give it a little twist to better set it apart from osmos (especially since it’s in the humble bundle again, right now)?

On the first 24 of the 48…

… things are dragging along rather slowly.

After righteously sleeping past the Theme announcement (completely legitimated by my Timezone) I started sketching ideas first thing in the morning.

The results were rather meager, though; I could only imagine about 2 of them making an acceptable game. The first was the idea of generating a park full of funny plants, each slightly different than the others, and being able to influence their evolution.

That sounds rather boring, so instead I decided to go for a high-speed WipeOut/Space Harrier/F-ZeroX -alike racing game were the track is made of winding, growing tendrils. It’s hard to put into words, and the concept sketches are not much help either, I’m afraid :)

The coding went awfully slow, though! I caught myself dropping into a quick and dirty imperative style very early, which made later iterations increasingly difficult and generally obfuscated the code.

Lunch was no highlight, either, and after spending the afternoon fighting some very annoying bugs I’ve only got a bleak prototype that must now be bent into an actual game.

The alien forms!

Meet the alien!

As a baby, as a normal, after eating a bunny, bat and fish!

My game is a puzzle platformer involving the consumption of other animals, taking on their superior aspects to solve the level.

Baby can move side to side.

Normal has a jump and consume ability.

Bunny is like Normal, but has a slightly higher jump; but also a double jump!

Bat is like Normal, but flies instead of jumps; unlucky has limited vision.

Fish is like Normal but may swim in water; the others will die on contact with water.

If time permits I may introduce a squirrel who will hurl nuts at buttons and levers, or even enemies!

Now, to work on flipping my animations, and working on some platforms!

Hope I don’t regret that I am doing my code last…

(Untitled)

Screenshot of the gameplay

Finally halftime :) Assets are done and a bit of gameplay. Spent way to long on graphics but I think it looks fancy schmancy.

Basic goal is to spread your cells into enemy territory and destroying them. Whith stemcells you are able to build new cells and evolve them to be more powerful.

It’s now 3am but I think I will keep programming just a little bit longer. There is still much to do. My plan for the last 24 hours:

– UI + Menus

– Sound / maybe some music??

– AI

– Bugfixes :(

Also I should let some people play a little bit, to figure out if everything is right balanced… Nah, maybe tomorrow :)

-bernie

Diving into music and sound, switching IDE

Oh MonoDevelop, you’re such a good guy. But I’m sorry, if you can’t tell me half the time that I’m going the wrong direct while Visual Studio (which I have access to for free) can tell me the moment I type that I can’t convert something, then we’re through. Sorry, better luck next time.

After the comp, you should file a feature request if there isn’t one already.

The Day Comes Close To and End

So, the day is nearly up and I’ve wasted a lot of time doing a whole lot of nothing, rage! Here is a bullet list of what I have done so far.

Made 3 maps (no enemies)
Made enemy sprite
Made animated player sprites
Made power ups
simple box collision fully working
added health
added score
added a question
added a HUD
I’m sure there is more but my head is sore right now, so I can’t think properly. My code is a mess at the moment. I really need to get started on added some fun game play or this will be a pointless game.

You can download my pointless rubbish game at

http://torqscrewsoftware.co.uk/ludum-dare-24/

Game of food

Alright, so today, I started making a roguelike in C / Javascript (Emscripten) and went pretty far, but realized it had nothing to do with the theme, so I started again in haXe / NME / HaxePunk, but since I had never used it, it was quite impossible for me to do anything, so I went back to my usual tools: C++ / SFML2, and started making a “Game of Life”-inspired game.

Since I haven’t got anything to show yet, have a look at what I’m eating! 😀

Kinda distracting from LD :)

First Ludum Dare, rather un-ambitious project. ACTION! MYSTERY! VEGETABLES/FRUITS!

I love how vague the themes are!

Still no idea!!!!

Damn evolution… still no clear idea but I am pushing forward trying to make something of this compo. This is my first attempt at an isometric style graphics never really done it before so I am skipping the perspective for now.

It doesn’t look that great but at least it isn’t terrible. Now to get some sort of play in there, god I have no clue what to do doesn’t look like I’ll have much but we’ll see. It’s not over yet.

Taking a Break

Okay so I’m running out of steam here. The headache is setting in. It is still possible for me to get everything I wanted, but damn you Microsoft and your datagrid control. That is a hellspawn of a control and it should be removed from .Net.

Painfully Simple Game

What looks like an overly simple game

IS an overly simple game!

Basically, you’re one big red dot who’s being pursued by various smaller dots. These dots destroy anything they touch, including each other. Tricking the other dots into hitting each other is a simple way to get points. On to evolution, however, if you crash into one of the three smaller dots, you evolve, change your look a bit, and wipe out any dots of the same color. Kind of stretching “evolution,” I know, but I’m not much of a programmer here and I only had three hours to do this. Despite being (very, very) simple, this game still has some of that arcade goodness. Possible difficulty settings added later on.

Summary from Day#1

I spent all the afternoon developing the inventory system and I couldn’t work on game mechanics. My lack of experience with CraftyJs, in particular, and javascript, in general, make me advance very, very slow.

At least the items on the inventory can be “evolved”. Here it shown the evolution of a sheep to wool and then a sweater. LAME!!!

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ Screen Shot 2012-08-25 at 23.04.11 Screen Shot 2012-08-25 at 23.09.09 Screen Shot 2012-08-25 at 23.09.19

19 hours in, 9 hours of real work, this is what I have!

Progress is going very well! My concept for the theme is very simple, but hey, simplicity is good. I’m going for a kinda “candy-land” (or Pyroland for those of you who are familiar with Team Fortress 2) art style, and it’s coming along nicely. Still very early, of course, but I’m making a lot of progress very fast! :)

Good luck to all my fellow game devs. Keep going and never give up! Oh, and don’t forget to plant a kitten in your game. 😀

Also, obligatory food picture post coming soon when I finally get my (way overdue, I might add) lunch. 😛

Post Friday Wrap-up

Ludum Dare Friday (Day 1)

We spent friday night working on our games design.

We spent most of Friday night designing our game; an exploration type game where the player will need to evolve new powers to get to certain areas in the game world.  By 3am (est) we had a pretty good idea of how the game should be played and before heading to bed we assigned some tasks for Saturday.  Christian is working on dynamically generating the terrain and populating the terrain with interesting object models for the players to discover and explore.  Rob will be modeling the environment as well as a player model.  Zenas is getting a character and camera controllers imported into the game.

Check out our live stream at twitch.tv/quadratron and chat with us on the twitch chat app or through our own irc channel at irc.freenode.net #quadratron.  You can also connect with us through Twitter, Facebook, and/or our website at quadratron.com.

Progress and dessert

Hi there. Basic gameplay done. 1% graphics and 0% sound.

But my girlfriend cooked ‘brigadeiro’ (it’s a dessert made with chocolate, but I don’t know the name in English).

One day gone, here’s another 2 screenshots

It’s been a tough 24 hours, but I’ve made some good progress. I had about 6 hours sleep (not too bad) last night, and I’m feeling refreshed and ready to go today!

See that flag? It’s a checkpoint. I bet your game doesn’t have one.

Some of the art for the game.

Everything is going well so far!

The 3d Engine is almost done, so today I hope to get to programming the actual game! OpenGL 3.2 will be required to run the game.

Lamarck – 24 hours

Got quite a bit done today, and I feel like at this point I’ll probably be able to finish up in time. Working on a game about Lamarck (who created a competing theory of Evolution around the same time as Darwin. Lamarck’s theory is incorrect (mostly?), but is still an interesting idea). Matt Thorson came up with the idea to make a game about it and I have since been playing around with that. It’s turning into something kinda interesting!

I’m spending way too much time on art, however. I need to take a break from that and work towards the actual gameplay and get the main mechanic fully working (that involves Lamarckism).

Evolution of game

Perfect! Time to submit!

what part of ┌┌┘,|/. don’t you understand?

Creature Builder Part1

Hi!

As I explain in my first post I m building a game where you build your creatures then let them evolve.

I just finish the creature builder.

Player will be able to build a costum creature using this interface :

The player can select tools in the right and then add parts to his creature by clicking the grid. There is some constraint beetween the elements, some part should be inside of the body, other outside but always connected to it.

Hooray for programmer artz!

Well, a game is starting to form, but I doubt it will be ready in time.

ROCKPOOL

You start out tadpoles in a rockpool with 3 bullies thrown in.
– A Ray (with lightning power)
– A Jellyfish (poisonous)
– A Crab… thing (with spikes)

The point of the game (if it works) is that as the Alpha you can:
1. Summon others to you.
2. Tell them to flee.
3. Tell them to fight.

The ‘evolution’ part comes in here…

Basically, you need to let a certain amount of your followers be exterminated before new replacements appear… and there’s a chance that, depending on how many kills each of the 3 baddies has made , you will get a new power.
1. Lightning. (your closest followers will fire it at the baddies)
2. Poison (harms them when they eat you)
3. Spikes (both fires and harms baddies when your followers are eaten)

You ‘win’ when all 3 baddies are dead and that’s presuming all your followers haven’t been killed off. :}

Your will be done

I think this game will go in the direction of a Supremacy-Clone. Just with more evolution 😉

This is starting to look like a game

This looks really cool, sir!

I hope to get to play it.

Thank you =)

Chugging Along

So far I’ve been intensely stressed out about my first compo. A myriad of problems have arisen throughout my initial dev process, but I’ve been able to strike out most of them.
The biggest one was the fact that I didn’t have all of the experience in my engine that I thought I did. I spent a good hour or two just struggling with the physics lib, and then decided to just go ahead and write my own sketchy solution.
The other was that I spent way to long making, scrapping, and then making more art. It’s not even very good, and I would consider it programmer art, but I spent far too long trying to make it look decent. That is something that I should have saved for later in the evening.

Regardless, I have a working prototype of sorts. Up next, level design and music! Oh, and more spriting.

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ screen1 screen2

I’m still not sure where I’m going with this

I have an idea in my head, but I don’t know if it’s too big for the time I have left. Anyways, that’s what Ludum Dare is for, right?

You can try the stupid robots here

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2014146/LudumDare24/WebPlayer/WebPlayer.html

they are stupids and don’t do much, the idea is to keep adding behaviors… and then you can unlock new ones and make new robots with those behaviors or something. This last part is not 100% clear, because I have a few ideas and I’ll see which one works best when the time comes

More robots to test this

For some reason the unity webplayer isn’t installing in chrome + windows 8. I’ll try restarting the whole pc later to see if it works.

Continue your slimy existence

Well, apart from a few stupidly simple bugs stumping me for embarrassingly long I’m please with my progress. The game is coming along well and the actual EVOLUTION content is now going in. Behind this ‘mutation update’ you can glimpse the war going on between 100 little annelids.

20 Hours In – Town Builder Sim!

Near rhymes…yuck.

Anyways,  I brainstormed for a little while and decided to go with “the evolution of a town.” So I got to work, made the core engine, sprited some stuff, add some buildings, added people, and all that. Um…I don’t know exactly what to say, so I’ll show you an image.

Town Builder Sim

You can build various buildings such as farms which produce money, houses which spawn villagers, and many many buildings which give money for every villager.

I’m fairly happy with how fast I’m going but I’m worried the gameplay is a bit lacking. We’ll see.

I guess that’s about it. Thank you for actually reading my blog post! 😉 See you later!

Wow, I didn’t expect such a positive response! I will create a beta as soon as I’ve made a tutorial and a save/load feature. Thanks for the compliments!

1 Day Down…

Needed a break, so here’s a post.

My “game” is coming along, but not as quickly as I’d like, and it seems to be missing the fun (and the game). I feel like I may need to go back to the drawing board and try to figure out a design for this. I was hoping it would come to me while I worked on it, but nothing really has. If you are curious, here’s my current state:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/98668/Acension/index.html

Also, breakfast and lunch:

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ IMG_20120825_062407 IMG_20120825_085039

Ok, isometric looks much better now

Got it, dude just freakin scale by .5 in y and qed.

Grrr maths how I love to hate you. Now to fix my positioning mat’s. And move on to some good stuff.

Day 1 progress report

On the visual side it looks quite bleak & scary, but on the code side, most of the engine needed to build the mechanic is completed. Still don’t know if I’ll be able to finish it in some sort of playable state – but I’ll try. Viva la minimalistic innovation! 😉

First time posting something about my game…

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/?attachment_id=166276

I think I am kind of late, so in the middle of my rushing I forgot to post something here! So here are some enemies… I still don’t have a screenshot of the game because I’m covering graphics first. Enjoy.

Time to Shower Myself… WITH IDEAS

The birth of our cute little virus protagonist!

Only about an hour into my actual coding, and things actually going pretty well!

I got all of my base code in place, and was able to splice together a little script that lets me display images within the game! It’s a text adventure, so working images into it makes me feel pretty accomplished so far.

As you can see above, I have also created the base image for the main character! The premise of the game will be that every time you die, you “reboot”, and gain any upgrades that you found in your last run.

I’m not really sure where I will go from here, so I am going to take a shower. Hopefully the hot water sends some ideas to my brain.

I’m curious about your entry… :)

Starting to look good!

Work is still in progress, but already bringing some fruit imo. Now to implement some skills for my Colorlies and some more advanced color combining logic.

Unfortunately, my neck starts to hurt! 😛

I think we interpreted the Evolution idea in a similar way :) Great minds think like :)

Introducing: Jaguar people!

After the comet crashed, people evolved and mutated into different animals. These are the jaguar people. They are ferocious, fast, and can jump really high.

Now, onto programming the ability to shoot spears so you can kill them.

Also.. AI ):

Aberdeen Meetup: Update 1

Originally published at: http://irl.unixcab.org/blog/2012/08/25/ludum-dare-24-update-1.html

The AUCS meetup is continuing and everyone is making progress. When I arrived at 12pm, everyone was already in Room 205 and busy working on their games.

Progress seems to have stalled at the moment as people are hitting blocks and tricky to solve problems now their basics are in. Tom Jones was having touble with “font rondering” (sic) but has now fixed this by not rendering fonts.

I have made good progress with my Pizza game’s UI and basic logic, although the bulk of the logic is yet to be written.

The idea is to have a high learning curve so that they player must “evolve” in order to play the game well. The difficulty of the game itself remains constant. There are no hints to key combinations that are used, although all key combinations are single key presses so shouldn’t take too long for a player to work out.

It is currently possible to prepare pizzas and cook them, but not deliver them. I’ve been working on a method of randomly generating names for people that have ordered pizzas and came up with this bash snippet that uses /usr/share/dict/words as a source of names. It filters for only proper nouns where a possesive apostrophe is used as these are likely to make good names.

As I’m writing this in pure C with ncurses, data structures all have to be created by hand. There are no “ArrayLists” or “HashSets” here. Working out how to store orders will be interesting.

I’ll also need to learn how to use ncurses windows as so far I’ve only been using the default screen.

Halfway there!

It’s impossible not to think of Bon Jovi right now.

Just a quick update, then I’ll get back to it. So much left to do!

Here’s the title screen I just whipped up!

Yes, you are OCTOGEDDON. Your purpose is to grow more and more limbs while evolving each one into deadlier weapons until you wipe out the human race.  It’s a defense game (familiar territory for me I suppose) where you can collect DNA points from vanquished foes to upgrade how many limbs you have and how powerful each limb is.

Here’s a recent screenshot:

First thing that came to my mind after hearing the theme is selectively evolving some sort of creature into some mutant monstrosity. The octopus came about when I was thinking that adding limbs would be a good way to mark your progression.

At first the baddies were gonna be sharks, and you were going to be sort of a “hero” octopus. I changed the sharks to submarines and made it so you are terrorizing the world instead of saving it. The octopus’s face had to change to reflect that of course.

Last night I spent a couple of hours thinking of a theme, then sketched on paper for an hour, then got an octopus rotating onscreen. I made it so you could swap out the octopus limbs for cobra limbs, added projectiles & enemies and worked on the music a bit.

Here’s what I had at the end of last night:

Today I added bubble particles and varied up the enemies (speedy/heavy and ones that shoot back at you). I added 2 more limbs (turtle shell and elephant trunk), got dna collecting up and running, and spent an hour on that title screen.

Laura periodically glances over at what I’m doing and laughs hysterically. I think that’s a good sign.

Ok, back to it. Hope I can finish!

A little sneak peek…

Good evening/night ladies and gents!

We’re nearing the end of our first run. Time to show something more than colored blocks!

This is what our art’s going to look like.
In this game you’ll have the chance to battle a friend (or CPU) in a race to the heavens while you build and evolve your own Tower of Babel. You’ll end up progressing through several time periods while you build higher to the sky and beyond! But beware, your opponent can destroy parts of your tower by shooting it away piece by piece and stop you from getting there.

So will you rush to the clouds or will you crush your neighbour? It’s up to you decide how you’ll win.
More screenshots will come tomorrow after our small break. Enjoy and keep on evolving your game!

Photographing birds is now possible

Day 1 is almost over for me. In an hour or maybe two I’m gonna get some sleep. Today’s progress has been great!

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ abird album

I’ve started with the basic rendering things. I made an island using World Machine, got it to render, added water, and then added a freeform camera. Then I worked on the trees. These trees are limited to a certain height on the island, so they don’t pollute beaches or the mountain tops. After that, I added the player character, and worked on the camera. The camera can take pictures, which are added to an in-game photo album. You can scroll through these pictures, and click on them for a bigger view.

After that, I started working on the birds. For my entry I want unique birds, and it will be your goal to photograph every kind of them. So I had to make them modular. By separating each part of a bird, I can now animate and color them independently. Which I did. The most generic birds are white, but it’s possible to find more exotic ones. Animating them was pretty easy as well, and they can now walk, fly, pick their feathers, and glide to the ground. AI was next, and now the birds will do stuff on their own. They’ll stand still, then start walking or flying somewhere, etc. And if you get too close, they’ll move away often.

So it’s been a very productive day today. The birds are only drawn from the side, and tomorrow I’m going to add 4 view directions for them. Right now they can moonwalk 😀 . I’m also going to have to figure out what to do to make it more of a game. If I get rid of the “explore islands for new species” part, then it won’t fit the theme. So a generic “photograph different birds doing different things for points!” game won’t really cut it. Ah well. We’ll see what happens. I’m also going to add an option to save any photographs to disk. Or maybe even let the game do that automatically, as an option. And maybe a few more animal types and plants, or procedurally generated islands. Bonus points for photographing a kitten.

Lots of different ways to continue, but I’ll leave that for tomorrow. If you want to try the current state of the game, you can grab the source from here https://github.com/Frib/LD24. It needs .NET 4 and XNA. Move with WASD, right click to equip your camera, left click to take a picture. Use scrollwheel or Q/E to zoom in/out when holding the camera. Press esc for your album, click on photos to view them, or press A/D to move between them. If you’re not a QWERTY user, a config file will be generated when you start it. Just edit that as it’s not possible to do that in-game yet.

The elusive Lioningo

Last update for today. My game now has made-up animals:

Gearga: some details and reworked engine!

I spent some time reworking the platformer engine and now I present to you… *drumroll*

Gearga!

So far the plot is you are a quail named Gearga. You escape an animal research facility, where cosmetic products are tested on animals and the genes of animals are routinely modified and locked away. As you escape you meet resistance from the scientists and from other animals who have escaped in the chaos. But fear not! You can tap into the various experiments to enhance your quaili-ness.

Rather mediocre game idea, but I really, really love the logo haha. Anyway good luck man.

EvoProbe: First day progress

I think I’m done for today. The game don’t look like a game yet, but almost all the logic is in place, storyline is ready. Tomorrow will be a day of polishing bugs, adding game art, making sounds, misuc, and combinig this all together.

Few things I learned during the first day:

  • HTML5 canvas is not that hard as it seemed
  • Making 75 levels for the game is a good idea, but not in such short time frame. Texts for 9 levels took almost 2 hours of work. But the storyline looks pretty interesting.
  • Using spine.js for MVC was a perfect idea. The code looks great so far, callbacks everywhere.

Screenshot of the sector map:

Going to sleep for a few hours. Have a nice hackday!

What a mess!

Well, after a half day thinking what I should do for this entry, I came to the idea of making a full console-input game.

It was not really simple, I started to create a language interpreter and all that kind of stuff, I have never done something like this before.

At least now it recognices all my commands and that stuff. Still some details missing. When I have ended with that I’ll try to create a proper interface and then end with the story of the game.

Also I’ll need to translate my game to english because I’m writing it in spanish, that is also a problem because (as you may can notice), my english is a little bit awful.

Well, let’s see what can I do. 😛

No screenshots yet, maybe later when I end my interface.

Good luck :)

Our little breakfast..

3  big pizzas, 9 people, it’s fair…

Pizza Time!

Here at Cube Miner, I’m having pizza, bask in it’s glory!

Simulation complete – time to gamify!

I’m pretty much done on the simulation part of my game idea. A few glitches here and there but it’s time to move onto making this into a game.

This reminds me a lot of a genetic algorithm. Are you changing the behavior of the kittens based on their parents?? Very cool. I’m looking forward the finished game.

After way too many hours I have an idea!

No screens yet, too much housework and stuff today so far. Getting a bunch of the boiler fired up. Will start posting screens as levels come into existence.

Hey there! First LD!

Hey everyone, I’m Luiz. I’m a Game Designer, and this is my First Ludum Dare! Sorry I took so long to post, I actually did not know I had to, until a friend of mine told me I should!

I’m finding it a really interesting experience so far, and I’m also having a lot of fun 😀

I’m Using StencylWorks to build everything up, making some real bizarre pixel art, haha… but that’s because I’m not an artist, everything I’m creating really doesn’t really match visually, and there are also several things that I’m sure that real programmers would laugh out loud if they saw in my “code”.

My main character art (just a frame though):

A screencap of a scene!

That’s it so far!

It’s turning out beautifully, man!

Keep it up :)

Taking shape!

Hello, just thought I’d share my game so far.

It’s getting there.

It’s Turned Into a Puzzle Game! Burn It With FIRE!

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

XD So my game has turned into something I thought I’d never make: A Puzzle Game. It’s still first person and there is platforming, but you have to actually think to play this one. It’s mostly complete, with just a few more visual tweaks, but otherwise the main level is done, complete with a boss.

The level is quite compact, but it’s designed to last a while. My speed run of the game took about 300 seconds, so an experienced player will probably take longer. This game is longer and has more advanced mechanics than any of my previous ludum dare games, and it was quite the work to get this far.

If there’s one thing I hate about game development, it’s LEVEL DESIGN! Making levels takes forever, but it has to be done, because that’s how you make your game longer.
