LD24 August 24–27, 2012

Done !

Damn ! After nearly 19 hours and 31 minutes of work (if I believe my Timelapse), I finally managed to submit “Room 24” on Ludum Dare’s web site.

I’m proud to have finally created a fairly complete game in such a short amount of time. In fact, I made 12 levels with always new mechanics. (And to say that at first, I just wanted to FINISH a simple game. I challenged myself.)

So, my desktop is a little messy :

Actually, when you make a Ludum Dare game, you are cut off from everything that does not concern your game.

But you make awesome progress in 2 days, starting with nothing.

I went through this…

…To get there.

It was an awesome experiment, more challenging than the first one but also more instructive.

Thank you for reading. I have to meet my bed now.

Aaaannndd…. done, sort of.

Phew!  So that was a bit of a whirlwind for starting up late last night!

The game isn’t at all what I really wanted it to be… but at least until you die it’s playable (not very fun, but playable!)

It was an interesting experience: that was my first time using Unity.  I like the engine – I think that I just need to learn more about the details of how it works.

If you want to play it, feel free!  I included a windows .exe in the repo, but other platforms will need to build from source:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=11228

I’m done… Pheeew.

So I just finished my second Ludum Dare entry ever. I didn’t fail quite as hard as my last entry and I actually finished something! I was one of a few guys jamming in the University of Cape Town venue in South Africa and it was quite alot of fun.

So my game is called “A Conglomerate of Pixels” and you’re basically a pixel that runs around sticking to other pixels which give you properties. Built entirely in Unity3D and www.bfxr.net. Play my game and tell me what you think!

Check it out here  – http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=8156

DONE

My game looks nowhere near as good as some of the ones on here, I’m proud of everyone who participated in the 48 comp, it takes a lot out of you at times.

My games not much, so im releasing it as a demo, Check it out guys :)

Time to get some sleep 😀

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=14705

Finished

Well, at least it’s as far as I’m going to get with it. The only thing seriously lacking is music, but I figured that would happen as I’ve never made music before and I have no idea where to start. I opened GarageBand up for a bit but then realized I wouldn’t be happy with whatever came out.

Good luck to all those finishing up!

EVOLVES!

Team Hocker — Update 3

This is what we would have had if we were doing the main contest. I guess we are lucky that we are doing the Jam to give us an extra day. We got one level done — which we think is pretty cool. We are continuing to complete a few more levels today and submit the finished product tomorrow. Please leave feedback for our work so far.

Thanks

It crashed during the last note of the dying sound and made a horrible noise!

Jam :-(

1 hour left … I have not starting to create map. Need to switch to jam.
Loosing so much time by trying to make a live, to sleep, to go eat & cinema :-(

Finally done

well thats all, now it’s time to play a bunch of awsome games, made by a lot of awesome people. :) Good luck everyone.

Human Fatality WIP#3

We have our first music done :).

It’s for the main menu only, you can listen it here !

Well, it’s off to the Jam with me.

Because I had to work on Saturday really took a huge chunk of my schedule, but I am glad to announce that I am about 60% finished with my game. I call it BUILD THAT TOWER!, and here’s a screen cap:

It is a game where you are a species who just crawled out of the mud and you have a rival who just did the same, the exact same time you did. A large entity commands you both to build a large tower to please it. All I need to do left is add research, messages, AI, sound, and a few graphical things, I wanted to add military and strategic fighting but that was just too overwhelming. I am afraid that it might get blown out of the water by some of these graphical games, well this is a strategy game that might take you 20 minutes to finish.

Finished!

Nearly killed me like last time. Totally rewarding like last time. Looking forward to playing some of these games….. once I get some sleep and regain cognitive function. My entry is here.

After two and a half revisions…

Welcome to Monkeyectomy!

I finshed something! The intial idea/plan didn’t work out with the guys I was going to work with…

Then the idea I had on Saturday morning didn’t work out… I was ready to give up about twelve hours ago, but didn’t bother posting anything about it.

Then I woke up this morning with a great idea for a gameboy color-style idea, and got to work!

After a few hours I had what could pass as a game to some people, and with a bit of bugfixing and such, here we are! It’s good for about a minute and a half or two of fun, and I actually have more fun with it than my last entry. I’m surprised I got something done in all of six hours, let alone enjoy it! 😀

And the last hurdle killed me

So, ran out of time… and sleep. Is there still a possibility to submit something after the deadline? might as well finish what I have started.

You can submit to Jam if you want. Another 24 hours to go. Otherwise no. No submitting for you.

Creature Ranger – Finished!

Finally LD24, I’m finished with my game!  There are a few more touch ups I could do, and there is a vast number of features I could have implemented but that does it for my 48 hour challenge!  Here is a screenshot of Creature Ranger.  Enjoy!

Developed on Windows (linux/macosx untested)
(Don’t know how to run it?)

Simple, yet complete – Click the image for the game!

I did it!

ZOMG I can’t quite believe I actually handed in a game (of sorts). Be kind to me people, this is my first game ever.

My submission

I really hope you all have the same sense of humour as I do, so I get some points!

Finished!

There were a few things I didn’t get to, but overall I’m pretty happy with what I made. This was not only my first Ludum Dare copmletion, but my first game completion in general! I’ve been programming about a year, and I have a ton of small unfinished projects, but this was just the motivation I needed to get something “completed”.

After looking at the rules before submitting, I had to take out the music I had in game, since it wasn’t my creation. For some reason, I thought it was cool as long as you had the rights to it. Either way, I wouldn’t have had time to make my own anyway. Other than that, the only big thing I didn’t get to was animating the horses.

All in all, it was a good weekend!

I give up

Too long time before I came up with a game idea, too many real-world things to take care of and too little focus on making the right things. Those are the reasons I’m not submitting my game. It’s just not very playable as it is now.

Here’s what the game looks like now with less than an hour to the deadline.

A worthy try :)

You can always work on it in the future and call it an overall success.

Slippin’ to Jam, due to a ‘small’ logic bug

I’ve spent last night, and some of today battling a collision bug. The problem was with random position I was generating. I was generating random positions based on 512 instead of 256 (‘<< 6’ versus ‘<<5’). On the SNES, the sprites just wrap around the screen, but the coordinates don’t match for collision detection. The thing that made it harder to track down is that collision detected worked correctly for half of the sprite, but there wasn’t a visible pattern.

Here’s the 2nd interactive demo:

The demo is available on the RasterSoft website.

Still going

Making more progress, but still a lot to do.  Here’s another teaser image :)

Finished My First LD Game

Huzarr! Finished my first ever LD game, in the 48 hours to boot!
It’s called ‘Natural Selection’ and you can download it here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=14348
I kept a small jounal on my blog here: http://www.nickolai51-dev.blogspot.co.uk

It’s a Doom-like shooter and while the graphics are’nt that great, I’m proud of the music I recorded for the game…

A dinosaur...

One of the enemies you can face… I think it’s supposed to be a dinosaur?

No longer pissed

PoV rocked my entry since I did finish it before the deadline — Also I created an executable version for windows (sorry mac and linux guys you’ll have to use the love file)

I don’t even care if it’s voted pretty darn badly — it’s just the fact that I participated.  Trying not to be so anti-social.

So thanks to PoV and i’ll be playing and rating everyone’s entries soon!

Boom. Done.

Whew! This was the closest I’ve come to not finishing (45 minutes to spare).

I wish I had more time to work on the audio. I shouldn’t have left that till the last minute. Oh well.
I think I wasted too much time just playing my game. I suppose it’s a good sign that the game is fun enough to distract me from working on it…

Take a look and let me know what you think:

PLAY SPROUT

Cave Creature!!

Whew, I finished!

I didn’t have nearly as much time as I would have liked, but I still managed to put together a passable game! I think I can do much better next time, if I prepare a little bit more in advance.

My last game ended up being absurdly short, because I had to hand-script every piece of content. This time, I wanted to get higher bang-for-buck by making more repeatable, “grindy” content. I decided to go with sort of an adventure/RPG, where you have to grind up levels to access the next area.

Unfortunately, to make a grindy game design work, I think you still need a few hand-placed elements to give the player some goals. I kind of failed at that because I ran out of time. I think adding a few boss battles, hidden areas to explore, and power-ups to find would have helped the game a ton!

What Went Right

Blob Characters
I really like the look I used for my little blob creatures. I’m terrible at art, but this was easy and cute. I was able to layer different types of eyes, horns, tails, etc. to make different looks, which was great for an evolution-themed game. I just wish I had time to make more variations.

World Map design
To make the world, I simply drew a giant 1024×1024 texture using palletized color, and blew each pixel up to a 32×32 tile. I could easily query the color of each tile, and I defined different terrain properties based on the index in the color palette (for example, blue is water, so you can’t walk in it).  My original plan was to draw a texture for each tile, but I ended up liking the way it looked.

I used a similar technique to define difficulty levels for each part of the map. I “painted” level bands onto different parts of the continent using Gimp, which let me throw in a lot of content very quickly.  Areas colored darker shades of red auto-spawn higher level enemies.

Collision/pathing
This went surprisingly smoothly. The enemies don’t really pathfind, they just attempt to slide around obstacles, but it ends up looking pretty good most of the time.

What Went Wrong

Lack of goals
As noted earlier, I think this game would really benefit from having a few bosses, secret areas, etc. to break up the gameplay. An ending would also be awesome. I wanted to do this stuff, but I just ran out of time.

Low bang-for-buck art
I wasted a lot of time making really terrible artwork. For example, the boulder that covers the cave entrance. It doesn’t look that good, and it doesn’t match the style of the world map. I wish I had just embraced the uber-pixellated style to begin with, and spent that time on more content.

Movement speed upgrades
Toward the beginning of the game, you move agonizingly slowly, and you slowly upgrade until you move so fast it’s annoying. Why on earth did I do that? The tail is cool, because it’s a one-time bonus, but constantly increasing your movement speed just doesn’t work very well as a progression mechanic.

Conclusion

Overall I think I have a lot of good stuff in this game, and I’m definitely tempted to put more time into it. My original plan was to have different terrain “hazards” that you could evolve adaptations for, e.g. ice, lava, learning to swim, etc. The engine is already set up to do that, I just didn’t quite get around to it. I’d also love to add a few more “special” mutations, add some bosses, and try to improve the combat gameplay and enemy variety.

I think my basic strategy was pretty good this time, so next time I’m going to focus on cutting corners, nailing down the art style earlier, and preparing my code/engine in advance. I think if I squeeze out just a few extra hours, I can make something really cool next time.

Submission!

Whew! I have finally submitted my game. It is a text adventure, written javascript, as I had promised.

I will have a few more words about the game-making process later. For now, it is 5:30 in the morning, and I need to sleep.

Thank you guys. No matter what.

so, the jam it is

I was very close to finishing, sort of, the game worked, kind of, but there were some intro and outro movies I wanted to include and the game itself isn’t that great. SO I’ll do the jam. At least now I can also include sounds and maybe even music.

I’ll include a screenshot for fun.

EvoProbe: Done!

EvoProbe version 0.0.0.0.1 is ready! I think it’s time for me to stop typing code and polish last pixels. If the game won’t succeed as it is now – it won’t succeed at all :)

Play EvoProbe Now »

Hope you’ll like it enough to vote for it! 😉

Some final screenshots:

I even managed to add some sounds to it during last hour. Unfortunately, no music in this version, but I’ll definitely add it later, after LD voting. As well as 64 plantes that are in the storyline but weren’t included to the final version because of lack of time.

Total development time, exluding all breaks, sleep & relax: 29 hours

My first of many Ludum Dares has come to an end.

I’m pretty happy with what I’ve created, and was really surprised by my own ability, powering through to create assets that would normally stop me from finishing a game. I’ll definitely be here for LD #25!

Hello, Mr. Anderson

This is my entry:
Firefly

I took a very conservative approach to the theme. How much closer to evolution can one get but with fireflies (read bees) and flowers? My initial idea was “The-Darwin-Award game – kill yourself as dumb and creative as possible” but I couldn’t make up any details fast enough, so I chose fireflies. I am currently working on a web-version, but I havent used libgdxs HTML5-target yet, so I don’tt know how long that will take. I will put the Android version online very soon too. I just need to make the code a bit more smartphone friendly (garbage collector isn’t your friend). This was my first LD and I have barely slept. It was both fun and horror, but I am very happy that I was able to finish something. Thank you all for a great community!

Screenshot

Another psychotic puzzler is out.

I did it. The game is called Gene Game and is about combining nucleotides inside organism cell and creating DNA sequences.

The biggest problem was to create all game rules and be sure they will work when I implement them. 48 hours was not enough to check everything, but I was lucky and the game is playable. It’s also challenging and maybe funny (for insane genius minds).

Finished!

Well, It didn’t turn out as good as i thought it might. But hey! I finished it and that’s what counts :) This was a very fun first ludum dare and you can count me in for the next one! I will be uploading my time lapse to youtube within the next few days and I will write a post here about it.

Good luck to all those still cramming to finish their entry and I look forward to playing/rating everyones game!

You can check out my entry at: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=10730

Love you guys! ~Mattykins

Lost the battle, no word on the war yet

There’s absolutely no chance that I’ll be submitting anything for the compo this time around. I’m not particularly disappointed, though, because the work I’ve got so far is solid and I’m really excited in general about the concept I came up with. I’ll continue to work tonight and tomorrow (I took a personal day from work, just for this!) and we shall see if I’ve got anything submittable before the Jam deadline.

If you’re interested in reading about the game, details to follow.

Kung Fu Evolution

My girlfriend and I have started watching some classic Kung Fu movies lately. As in, just this week. In fact, we were watching one when the theme was announced. It took a while to sink in, because, of course, I was thinking about evolution as science, biology, genetic algorithms, game of  life simulations… I’ve worked on a couple evolution simulations, and I knew from experience that they’re fairly hard to turn into a “game”. The very theory of evolution dispels any notions of set paths, beginning and end, and a designer, among other things. I’m sure plenty of people chose this route and many of them probably made really interesting things;  I knew that I could not.

So, how can evolution apply to Kung Fu?

Kung Fu is known for its “styles”, specifically those modeled after animals. I envisioned a game where you played as a student of a randomly generated Master, populated with”traits” for your style focus, and a style for your punching, kicking, blocking, and jumping moves. When you win a match, your fighter becomes a Master with a school of students, each a “descendant” of the Master with small mutations, good or bad. You choose a fighter, fight a match, and continue until you build the Kung Fu Master well adapted enough to the rival school to beat its Grand Master.

Little did I realize how many sprite animations I would have to do. I managed to get 9 done, out of a planned 21. I picked a simple large-pixel style on purpose, but I guess that didn’t make much of a difference.  It also didn’t help that I’m not hugely familiar with Kung Fu or the many different animal styles, so I spent lots of time on YouTube trying to find appropriately spectacular moves. The fruits of my labor are below (see if you can guess the animal style of each; your options are Dragon, Crane, and Monkey):

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ fighter_walk dragon_punch_anim dragon_kick_anim dragon_jump_anim crane_punch_anim
crane_kick_anim crane_jump_anim monkey_punch_anim monkey_kick_anim

So, even if I don’t make the Jam deadline either, I’m happy that I’ve got a solid, fairly fleshed-out concept and some back-end work started. I will be making this game.

Cheers to all that  finished their game, and cheers to those that didn’t. Being a part of this culture of creativity and community is what matters.

Aaaand, I’m done!

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=15662

Ludum dare has been nothing but fun. I really did enjoy making this game as much as I did watching others progress along with me. So if you’d like, go check it out :D. As for what it’s about:

SUPER ROBOT EVOLUTION is about robot, you play as him and you ravage other robots for experience, in turn, you will gain experience, level up, and evolve throughout. Your stats get boosted with each level. And with each level, it builds up the difficulty.

10 hours, 5 cups of coffee later..

I AM DONE!

I told you, that I would do it, and I did it. Nobody, not even a damn amazing holiday, can stop me from participating in one of the greatest events known to mankind. It was a crazy experience, as 10 hours are… like no time at all. Anyways, I don’t want to let you read a whole wall of text, so..

Click here to play my game

Don’t expect it to be good. To be honest, I admit that it’s pretty darn boring. It also has 2 bugs. And no music or sound.

I’ve never been this proud of a game before, though!

That’s it for now, I’ll write a post-mortem tomorrow.

– Folis

avaki EVO progress update.

Here is the in progress demo for my evolution game:

Zip file containing: EXE and Sound/Music:  http://www.shemusic.org/avaki.zip

So with less than one hour left, it seems that i wont be able to finish this one up for Ludum dare compo.

Maybe i’ll try to finish it for the Jam although with so many features to implement and bugs to fix (oh god so many bugs) it seems highly unlikely.

Thouht i’d share the progress anyway.

Controls: Z to activate the life orbs.

The entry works in WINE perfectly (note for linux users).

P.S: Love “SHE” music.

All done

After gazing on my computer screen for 35 some hours, I have finally accomplished something! I’ve decided for an evolution theme, particles would “grow” in experience and health. Your enemies can grow too!

Coding and debugging

While the number of lines of code hits 2000, there are plenty of comments left in!

The game’s called “Entourage” because you control parasites where you can command them to defeat the bad parasites (or badguys as I put it.)

It wasn’t easy to create because there were tons of logic to figure out plus tweaking the bugs and glitches PLUS dealing with the editor’s flaws. The time was spent entirely on programming so I had to skip much of the graphics and some fancy-shmancy interfaces. I hope to GOD my game turned out crash free!

Failed

No contest entry for me, but at least my game concept seemed like it had potential.

Excuses — This was my first Ludum Dare, so I didn’t have super-high expectations anyway.  Plus, some unanticipated real-life obligations prevented me from really digging into the code until pretty late on Saturday.

The experience was very educational — many thanks to the organizers for running this compo.

Finished

My first Ludum Dare and I had a lot of fun. So liberating to build something in a weekend and release it warts and all.

By trade I’m a programmer and I think the art in my entry reflects that. I’ll do a full post mortem soon but for next time I’m definitely going to brush up on my art and sound skills.

Glad to have taken part though and definitely proud of my submission regardless of it’s final score.

I’m never gonna make it D:

Well, it was fun but I’m never gonna make it apparently. I might participate on the Jam but not on the compo anymore.

So sad D:

Evolving from a micro-organism…to a flying, unicorn pig

Evolution is a wonderful thing. So wonderful, in fact, that Ludum Dare #24 is about it. Now, as for evolution itself, you must understand it visually. And to do that, use the most important way of viewing: the video game. Precisely, the video game: Micro2Mega.

In Micro2Mega, you have been de-evolved from a human all the way to a single-cell micro-organism. You must play through the levels to evolve back into a human. In each level, you will collect the DNA (but watch out for the evil DNA!). Once you have enough DNA, the game will tell you to enter The Evolver. The Evolver is a sort of time portal, which will teleport you to the next stage of the life. Play through, and don’t lose too many strands of your precious DNA!

PLAY!

Outside of the Test Tube

Hello LD! I’m finished my game! Here what I made in 48 hours, only with Gimp and the Blender Game Engine:

:)

A tower defense game, with three units:

Gemini – give you more credits
Wall – protect the others
Cannon – shoot in the enemies

The goal is survive the wave of enemies for a determinate time.

The idea of the game was to have units that evolve, but time was short! xD

Oh crap

So I’m working in Unity, right? Been testing my game in the editor all this time. Finally got around to making a standalone build (for submission) and it’s all “this build was made with a beta version of Unity and will only work on your computer” and I’m like “why am I using a beta version of Unity WTF” and now I’m basically racing to see if my computer can download the latest non-beta fast enough to let me install, update the project, make the build, and submit in time.

That’s ONE way to finish off a Ludum Dare, I suppose. 😛

Entering the Jam

Alright, so, I’m out of time, and I’m not done. But here’s the thing. I don’t care! I knew this would happen in the back of my head when I went with my crazy idea. You see, when I first thought of it, I threw it away immediately. It was too ambitious. But then I remembered Chevy Ray’s advice from reddit. Throwing out the first idea was a tip for making a game you wanted to win.

I realized I didn’t want to win. I wanted to make something epic. And so, I decided to forget everything they tell you about going for something you could finish or something basic and just make my idea.

So, I did. And it bit me back. But was it a mistake? Absolutely not. I can still make the Jam’s deadline. I can still make a great game out of this.

To everyone who has received advice from me, and I tried to give a lot, I’m truly sorry I didn’t follow it myself. Yet at the same time, I’m not. Now, to finish this thing!

I like it! One quick note, and maybe this is the platformer in me, but I kept wanting to jump on the little mobs to kill them instead of hiding in my shield and running by. Unless that is what you’re supposed to do and I couldn’t get it… I am bad at games :S

DONE

IT IS FINIIIISHED.  Praise Jesus!

I wasn’t sure how things would go on this one, but I was surprised how much I managed to get done.  And I have new confidence in my art (it’s not perfect, but yeah, I can make those assets if I have to).  I even recorded some music for the ending.  I feel good.

First LD success!

I did it! I managed to finish what I intended to do for this LD!

I’m exhausted but it was worth every minute, congratulations to all participants and good luck for those who are still working!

Now I need some rest 😀

Oh, here’s the link for my entry:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=15749

I must warn you all that it is a extremely bizarre game.. I intentionally chose to not give instructions to the player since I wanted the discoveries to be part of the experience.

Aaaaaaaannnd TIME!

I am FINISHED! Time to go crawl into a fetal position and roll around on the floor and search for treatment to my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Though the puzzle game I had planned fell through, I managed to get my backup game fully coded from scratch within the last few hours. I don’t believe my heart is supposed to be where it is right now. Where is my heart, actually? I can’t feel it. Oh well. That’s not important. Anymore read MOAR and PLAY EEET NAO devs!

I failed.

Maybe I’ll post a game as a jam entry but I doubt it ’cause have some work to do.

The idea was to make a shooter/roguelike with evolving enemies with evolution path defined by your agressive (or not) actions.

I’ve spent too much time learning lua and programming engine. But I like what I did and will improve this engine. I’ve completely ignored OOP this time. It’s all functions and event maps (actually lookup tables) and that’s great! Gives me a bird-eye view on the inner mechanics of the game.

Take a look at screenshot!

…and video.

All done!

My entry, Empire of the Petri Dish, is done. I like how it turned out, especially how the conversion to HTML5 worked out well.

Beat it in 7:19 for those looking for a time to beat. Shouldn’t be too hard i got lost a while looking for the final urn

Flash, embedded fonts, and compo

Wasn’t thinking about fonts on different computers, but I just saw that my text is getting cut off on different computers than the one I developed and tested on. I’d embed a font and use that, but since that’s an asset that I didn’t create myself, wouldn’t that be breaking the rules of the competition? Not that I have much time to do anything anyway…

With 20 minutes to spare

… phew!

It’s probably rubbish, but it’s a game, and I made it. Twine is fun, I must say and might work on a much more detailed project later. If only their macros had “Else if” statements to work with…. still this was a fun way to knock a quick one out even though I didn’t have the full 48 hours to work with. I hope you all enjoy it, or that even one person plays it 😀

Guess it will be for the Jam then…

Teaches me for wasting too much time…

My game is basically a simulator which there are 1-4 tribes which “evolve” in time.

Tribes fight over the ressources so some may not make it by the end of a simulation. A simulation lasts 500 years (1year = 1sec). Though the player can’t play a tribe, he can either watch the tribes fight, or he can unleash devastating disasters which can advantage tribes and disadvantage others.

Todays achievements :

– finished the AIs

– added disasters

– made all sprites

– started implementing sound

Tomorrows objectives :

– improve the AIs

– make proper end of simulation.

– improve sprites

– finish making sounds

Oh yeah! I also have to randomize the tiles!

Entry Submitted

I did it, I completed my first ludum dare! It was a ton of fun, but I’m definitely glad there are only a few a year.

Please check out my entry, Mutating Scales:

You can play it on the web, right here.

so..

giving up on making the compo, and grabbing a friend to help with the design elements!

building testing

at least I finally figured out how the game will look…..

Day 2

Day 2
<- well, I animated this little guy.  He is traversing the dungeon in a lemming-like fashion, so I crafted the following animations: walking, climbing, falling and attacking. More may be needed, but I think we’re good. The one on the left is the attack animation.

I also finalized the card format. Pictured here>

Nathan did all sorts of coding, and we have an alpha version that, as far as I can tell, knows all the cards and can deal the first hand. This is quite huge.

I’m getting down to business fleshing out the dungeon graphics. It’s going to be big tileable chunks of dungeon, in 3 layers so we can have some parallax.

After that I need to make the artwork for the cards themselves, based on their description.
Being a professional illustrator, I know that this job would be insane (30 cards), but that’s why I love LD !

I’m sorry to all the awesome people and your awesome entries, I just haven’t had time to comment.
Thanks for viewing

Wormelution: done!

So, this was epic. Ludum Dare makes my brain go jelly but it’s always a great experience. And here’s my result, Wormelution!

As usual, it lacks a little the game. But some parts are quite polished and feel good so I’m quite happy about it. Some other things went, as usual, terribly wrong. More Post-Ludum-Dare when my brain works again.

I also uploaded a clip to YouTube.

Hell yeah!

Fantastic feeling when you finish your work! Arrrggghhh!!!

So! This is my entry http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=12085

Soundtrack was written on my Android phone with PixiTracker 1-Bit program. I released a high-quality version of track on Soundcloud for free download. Enjoy!)

And good luck to all competitors!)

Un-Success!

So, you play an Evolving Bacteria/Ship/Protozoan in the mouth of a Cat Being, fighting for control over its brain: #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ Weird animated logo thing. Cat Being expresses joy. Cat Being expresses joy.
The Battleground de Maw. The Battleground de Maw.
Cat Being expresses sads. Cat Being expresses sads.
E.V.O.: The Search for Eden - I love this game so, so much! E.V.O.: The Search for Eden – I love this game so, so much!

I worked very solidly for a dozen broken up hours, but lost major time to:

  • Having only a vague blobby idea at the start(and for the following 16 hours). This is when I was most prone to distraction and procrastination(See my E.V.O. Character above, he chomps mad squid).
  • Having out-of-state friends visit for the weekend on Saturday night(had a nice time, but knew I was paying for it with un-success).
  • Sleep and sleep debt(be well rested before competition starts, I was not).

With luck I hope to continue my vital research into this phase of Toxoplasmid Evolution at a later date.

Can’t wait to check out some of the amazing creations I’ve seen posted, been following many of them with rapt attention! Best of luck to you all!

Done!

What a great time I’ve had this time around on LD24! I’m tired, have a wicked headache but it’s been worth it. I’ve spent my weekend at the Manchester UK Meetup– MadLab and it was nice to mingle with some of the guys local to me. Only a few of them were working on Ludum Dare games, but we were all inspiring each other and there was a great creative atmosphere.

I decided to use FlashPunk for the first time (another learn on the job that I always seem to manage), It’s actually pretty good though. I managed to get XML data parsing from OGMO Editor and the result is the first evolutionary phase of my game effort, imaginatively named “Evolution” lol… I know, I know.

I started going down various layers of game possibilities that would scaffold in terms of development complexity, but after playing the simplest, I simply enjoyed the retro fun and decided that I would keep the simple mechanics and enhance the retro graphics, provide the first chunk of gameplay and then add 60 or so levels after the event.

Anyway, here are some screenshots and you can play the first 9 levels of the game here:

Finished!

Just in time!

Of course, I didn’t manage to make it playable but I was close, really 😀

I am satisfied with my experiance. I know what I did wrong and what I did right. I know the direction.

Now, with all of it in my mind, I’m looking forward  to the next LD. I have good feelings about it!

Thanks for this weekend and goodnight!

DONE!!!

i did a rather bang up job. some menu items arent workin, but you know, thats life.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=15827 is the link to my entry!

very few bugs, seeing as how something would come up EVERY G.D. TIME that i tried testing it. cat wait to test everyones game!!!

BTW this is my FIRST EVER GAME I HAVE FINISHED, although i do have some experience.

Day 2 is finally over

I am feeling exhausted and happy all at once. My first successfull LD entry. I finally managed to solve my sprite bug and was able to submit a small game that is using the raycasting-based software renderer that I have been spending most of the time on. I am not happy with the gameplay of the game; it is just a small and shooter without any special mechanics. What I am very happy with, is the art still. I really like low-res games.

That’s it for me and good luck to anybody still spending the last minutes to polish the game. Post Mortem and timelapse will come somewhere next week I guess once I had some time to reflect.

It’s Done

Wow. I made a game.

It was my first LudumDare. First making music experience. First burned teapot.

I’m very tired. Now 5 am at local time. And I must sleep and wake up at 8am for going to job. Sh-t full week forward. When I must good sleep?

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=16034

From Russia with love. Smack.

Finished, but not quite…

Unfortunately I didn’t make it this time. I lacked focus and could not make what I had into a game.

I made a little toy, and submitted it nevertheless to share what I have done.

You can play it and see the entry here.

I’ll also leave a screenshot. Later this week I’ll try to make a post mortem about what went wrong (those are the good ones :P)

For everyone who participated, thanks for making the LD what it is, and I am looking forward to play the games!

Dr. Laser-Shooter, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Laser

My game is done and submitted! Here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?uid=15809

executable file: http://www.mediafire.com/?twqm8svnmtoavmj

game maker file: http://www.mediafire.com/?6xv1mn8vdj3ccbc

I used Game Maker for almost everything. I also used Photoshop to make one background and Audacity to record a sound effect.

GeneRogue

horray ! and it’s committed =)

Explore the caverns to find genes that will benefit your offspring. Death is inevitable, but life goes on.
Find a nesting ground and lay an egg before you die, or the genes you found will be lost.

Chrome recommended for WebPlayer.

made with Loeve!

since last blog: some rudimentary music and sfxr sounds, randomly generated dungeons with increasing difficulty, darkness

Probably going to make a more polished-jam version tomorrow.

Webplayer-Version

Yay ! I made it !

my first LD game (and also my first finished game ever) submitted !

http://www.uselessworks.com/LD/rundinorun/

I’m not sure i’m really happy about my game, but i’m so glad i could make this game work well enough to be submitted.

now SLEEEEP…

Done !!!

Some little things to complete but all is over !

Very nice LD 😀

Thanks to Motion Team for receive us. It was very fun (as always ;))

Well, won’t be completing LD24 compo.

Alas, I tried!  But I lost a whole day due to sickness, and I wasn’t feeling so hot for the other day, on top of that.

Here’s my game, so far.  I’m going to be entering it in the jam, as I work on adding sfx and music, plus more levels.

The basic idea is that you are a jetpack wearing redneck with a shotgun, whose trailer home is being invaded by space alien kudzu.  The kind that rapidly evolves to resist your weed killers.

It’s quite playable in its current state, though I had to cut some gameplay mechanics along the way.

If you want to give it a shot as it stands, I’ve uploaded it here.

Signed,

Finally Done!

After 36 hours, finally finished. Genius Evolve resulted in the game, a game like the old “Genius,” only one way “evolutionary”.

The game was pretty hard to finish. Added an online scoreboard to see who reaches the final: D

What I liked most was to do the soundtrack, as it evolves with the whole game.

That’s it, hope you enjoy and finish the game!

Thank you!

YAIFP

So, I failed.  I only had about 15 hours altogether to put into the project.  Probably another 5 hours or so would have done it. I could possibly submit it for the Jam but I think I need to take a break from it and come back to it fresh.

I’m looking forward to taking some time tomorrow to see what others came up with.

Oh god…

I finally submited my game, but I’m not really sure you can reach the end! It had a lot of problems near the end so i got really nervous to fix it out. Hope everything is ok…

FLOWERBOT:

submitted

didn’t get in the mesh editor (which ties in the evolution theme), but did manage to get a basic menu-looking thing and some level switching (4 levels total)

if I get some more time I’ll keep jamming on it. I had the idea to make an arcade mode where you battle previous versions of yourself.

Submission Post!

FINISHED!

Wow, I still cannot believe I actually finished something! I was sure I won’t make it on time! Anyway, here it is:

Click here to play “Meow for MUTATION!”

An intelligent race of feline-like creatures has just learned about the upcoming attack of ALIENS. Having no choice, they must defend by all means possible. The problem is, until now, they had no use for weapons and war machines, being the peace-loving folk they are. So they figured they will use Crossover Accelerating Technology (C.A.T.!) to speed up their evolution – that’s the only chance for them to survive!

Yeah, it’s not really finished. I can actually prove there was more to it when I started, because I made a Game Design Document (a very simple one). Feel free to grab it. Well, at least GA I packed inside works (this was actually the easy part).

Timelapse and postmortem posts are on the way!

Cube Miner is done! Submitted!

Horray! I’ve submitted cube miner, you can find it here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=14412

I’ve added lots to it, loads of research projects, tweaked things quite a bit to make it a bit more difficult, fixed a few bugs (though there’s probably still a fair share there) added more buildings, and changed the spawners a bit (2 different types now).

Also quickly made some music on my guitar for the game, I’m quite pleased with it! 😀 and a small Help/Tutorial window!

Look at the entry to get all the links! Thank you for following me! Follow me more on my twitter @Draxov and have fun with my game :)

Done! I did IT!

I managed to complete the game in about 10 minutes from the end, I have to say that tonight I lost a lot ‘of time .. I could put less sincerely.
Thank you all for the opportunity and I hope you enjoy my “Human Evolution” XD

good night

Whew, finished!

So after 2 hours of solid rushedness and brain melting agony, we have here a finished game!

Long story short you have to match up the DNA bases in order to further extend the molecule and become a god, or something.  I might have hallucinated the last part, it’s been a long evening. I’d be grateful if you would play and rate it! :)

Done!

It is my best entry so far, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean much :)

I used three.js’s WebGL renderer only and coded it all in WebStorm. Tiled was used for level creation and Open MPT for music and musical SFXs.
I am quite satisfied with the result but the levels and control could use some polish. Creating animated 3D-models is something that I haven’t learned yet as well :)

Enjoy it here!

Gameplay video!

The end

First Ludum Dare finished! I had time to put in everything I wanted to, which is good. I also had time to fix some slightly irritating (but not game breaking) bugs, so yay 😀

Check out my entry here!

Looking forward to the next Ludum Dare! 😀

All outta time!

Yeah, I never quite finished my assembler this weekend as I had hoped, but that’s okay, because it still tricked me into being productive! Maybe by NEXT Ludum Dare, it’ll be ready to rock.

— Overkill

The end (for now)

Well I did not complete my entry in time for the deadline. But I have made all the source files available for download Here.

Can’t wait until the next  ludlum dare.

Done!

I’m done it’s not much but this is my first LD so I didn’t expect much from myself.
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=15450

Meet the Meebas!

Holy batman, I’m exhausted! And I see about 800 entries so far, even before the mad rush of submission hour. Wow. Also, the servers seem spectacularly stable, so nice one ludum dare people!

I present my entry, Rise of the Meebas:

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=3643

It’s a puzzle platformer that’s ended up being quite a lot more complete than I had hoped for. The idea is that your Meebas evolve after moving a certain amount, evolving new and more exciting types of movement. If I could add more levels, I’d want to introduce crafty Braid-like positioning/distance puzzles, but unfortunately the idea only started to solidify about half way through. During that time, I worked on art, which I found to be a great way to let an idea brew while doing something useful like the graphics. I also would’ve liked to add grappling and swimming, but that’ll have to come later.

What an amazing ludum dare it’s been. I look forward to seeing everyone’s entries.

That’s That Then

I’ve wrapped it up and submitted now.  It’s good to have it done – but no doubt without the deadline I would’ve been going for much, much longer.  It’s just a basic platformer in the end.  Unfortunately there just wasn’t time for anything more – which, most disappointingly, involved pretty much all of the points of difference.  (various abilities and power ups: weapons, speed/slow time, movement speed, radiation tolerance, radiation special attacks, changing forms with mutation and evolution levels, particle effects for fanciness – not to mention various forms of variety to the jumping around platforms)

Anyway, it was certainly an educational experience, and enjoyable for the most part (except for the bits I mentioned earlier! (: ), so all’s good.  I was kind of line ball as to whether to submit it, but it’s there now as a kind of proof of… well, not really concept, but proof of effort, or something (:

Hope your games all turned out well.  I look forward to playing a few of them!

Blah.

I am submitting my “game”, even though it isn’t really a game.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying to find 1 bug. Apparently JavaScript can’t actually handle what I was trying to do, as the syntax isn’t advanced enough.

Up for grabs anyway, and I can now say I have “completed” the Ludum Dare :).

Supreme Intelligence is DONE

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=16454

Go check it out. It’s worth it.

I do NOT have a windows binary sadly D:
If somebody could compile one for me, I’d appreciate that.
I lack access to a windows computer and my cross compiler currently is extremely broken. Or rather, all of my cross compilers are.

Now, I must catch up on lost sleep, food, and socializing. I have a very bad neck cramp, but a cool little game.
I didn’t get to implement almost anything…but whatever. 4 hour late start, around 15 hours of sleep, breaks both days for food and breaks in lieu of self maintenance such as showering and health.

S special thanks to all who watched my livestream and/or gave moral support :)
