Warmup Weekend – Ludum Dare 27

Hey guess what? It’s Warmup Weekend time again!

Did you skip out on #7DFPS this week? Then between now and Ludum Dare 27′s start time, you should probably make sure that your tools work. Make some art, import it, and draw it on screen. Make some sounds, import them, and play them on cue. If you’re using a new development tool, figure out the development and testing cycle.

Bullet point summary:

  • No rules or limits. This is practice.
  • Learn your development tools! Write some code, run it.
  • Make some art, get it on screen, make it move.
  • Print some text to the screen. Print some text to a log (if applicable).
  • Make some sound, get it in game, make it play.
  • If you’re motivated enough, make your experiments in to a game!
  • Make something that should take “hours”, not 2 days.
  • Then package it up, put it online.
  • No time or day limit. But if you have no other plans this weekend, why not?

If you like what you’ve done, feel free to share it.

I’m in again!

Yay, I’m participating for the fourth time in a row now!
Already can’t wait. Will be livestreaming this time, too.

Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Framework: probably libGDX, depends on what I’ll make though 😉
Graphics: GIMP
Sound & Music: AudaCity and my microphone! No, I won’t sing, silly. For music I’ll probably use Autotracker.
Timelapse: Chronolapse
Streaming: OBS

Alrighty, that’s all. Whoosh.

I’m in for 27

Language:  Java

IDE: Eclipse

Art: Paint.net

Timelapse: ChronoLapse

Streaming: XSplit

Looking forward to this one 😀

Joining to LD #27

Greetings everyone!

My name is Katamori, and I join to LD! I’m totally new here; it’s gonna be the first time when I participate in Ludum Dare. I’m a semi-beginner programmer, and don’t have any finished games yet. I’m interested in C++ and Java, but was too bad at both. Fortunately, recently I found Lua and LÖVE for programming. It was a great help, I even started warming up by creating a game in 7 days before the great challange!

It’s gonna be fun, I’m sure.

Language: Lua
Libraries: LÖVE (if I know well, it’s allowed to use, tell me if I’m wrong)
Coding: Notepad++ with LÖVE compiler
Graphics: Paint.NET
Sound effect source: SFXR (the SFX generator that was specially designed for LD)
Streaming/recording: not able to record the whole process. I may do an attempt, but I’m very doubtful about it.
Energy source: I don’t know. Maybe I won’t consume anything unusual. Only coffee. Maybe.

I have completed my library, and I am so happy, I am posting a thing!

It is obviously more important to be saving space for the “I’m in!” post, but I am SO happy about this thing, that I am going to post it! (Plus I need to share this before the competition starts)

It includes everything I have ever learned in the past 3 years! My other two Ludum Dares were big fat learning experiences, but I don’t REALLY like the games that turned out there.

The features of this 4-pack library include:

  • Barbaric sound loading/playing!
  • A Camera!
  • Sprites that animate!
  • A GUI system!
  • Game States!
  • Collision that works! (yay!)
  • Image loading!

I am mostly posting this for myself; because the thing is not documented at all… I should do that.

Anyway this is the library I am using for Ludum Dare with it’s source, its split into 4 tiny pieces so I could focus better on the specific parts (cuz otherwise I go on a tangent)

Good luck to all!

If you are on your first; this will be an INCREDIBLE learning experience!

LD #27, I’m in!

It’s been a while since I’ve given this a go; haven’t tried the compo since LD #22. But I’ve grown a lot since then, and I’ve switched from freeglut to SDL. I’ve been playing with the newly released SDL 2.0, and it seems amazing for what I want to do. Going to spend the next few days playing with it and warming up, but I already feel I can make games exponentially faster!

Toolset

  • Language: Either C or C++11, haven’t decided yet
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Compiler: MinGW/GCC
  • Codebase: SDL 2.0
  • Graphics: GraphicsGale, Photoshop CS 2
  • Sound: bfxr
  • Music: Tuxguitar, Linux MultiMedia Studio

Nice to terribly helpful data on behalf of me.

Hey there!

Right now I really don’t know if I got some time to participate because I planned out the whole ludum dare weekend, but if I can find some time, somewhere, I would be really excited because this would be my first LD ever!

Language: Java

Framework: none just pure Java

Graphics: Paint.Net

Sound: don’t know yet…

Coming back from the Slaughter House

Hi all!

Just wanted to say that I have just slaughtered 500 themes.

Can’t wait for the ludum dare… hopefully the theme will not be Maximalism ! :)

Regards!

Probability of LD#27

So, I figure that I might attempt number 27 of this ongoing quest for games. My previous attempts have been both more and less successful, generally of the lesser kind according to myself.

Regardless, I had a grieveous injury happen to my battlestation for this upcoming quest, which might very well bode badly for my attempts. The chair that is to be my throne decided that it was no longer as in love with its foot as when they first were assembled, and it had to break it all off.

Warning, horrifying gore

Regardless, I shall be off on a search for a new chair worthy of my money this sunday. Hopefully with such a chair I’ll have a much larger probability of getting work done on the upcoming Ludum Dare, for the meantime (warmup) I’ll just have to do my best standing up.

As usual, I’ll be attempting this the way I learn the most. Using C++ with SFML as my framework, with my own entity system called Kunlaboro.

Regardless, the best of luck to the rest of you.

I’m In! First Timer

This will be my first game jam and I’m excited to participate and use it as a learning experience! I’m a developer by profession with a few game related things on the side for iOS. Never released anything game related publicly, so hopefully I can change that with this jam! Last week I started working on learning Unity 3D using the Futile framework (a code centric framework thats more up my alley for now). This way I can publish for the web, a lot more accessible than iOS.

Unfortunately, I have some prior engagements that weekend, so won’t be able to benefit from the full 48 hours, but will do my best!

Tools:

Game Engine: Unity 3D with the Futile framework for 2D development

Language: C#

Graphics: GIMP

Sound: Probably cfxr if I have time, maybe something else if I find other options

In for 27!

I’ve participated in game jams before, but this will be my first Ludum Dare and my first time doing a solo competition. Adventure!

Tools

Engine: Probably Construct 2, as I’ve been using it to prototype recently so it’s fresh on the brain. There’s always a chance of Unity, though. It will depend on the game.

Language: If Unity, C#

Graphics: GIMP

Sound: Probably SFXR

Music: This is the one area that will be an adventure for me, as I can art and code it up and design games for a living, but I’ve never written a song in my life. I asked if the Disasterpeace “January” tool was valid for the solo competition but never received a response. Any thoughts on that? Otherwise I’ll give PXTone a try.

Looks Like I will be using LibGDX instead of Java2D

LibGDX seems a lot more powerful.

I think I’ll stick with it since I do like the easy cross platform publishing capabilities. It also has a tonne of very useful features like SpriteBatch, which is essentially essential for any game. I could also go with LWJGL, but I don’t exactly have the experience necessary with the library.

What are you going to use and why?

I’m also going with LibGDX. It’s a great framework, I’m hoping to make my game run on the web too using LibGDX’s HTML5 applet thingy.

Declaration of war!

or, as most people say it, I’m in! :)

Once again I’ll take part of the compo and my tools of choice to this great battle to come are:

  • Language: AS3
  • Framework: Flixel
  • IDE: FlashDevelop
  • Graphics: GIMP
  • Level editor (if needed): my own editor
  • SFX: sfxr
  • Music: LMMS (or, if I gather enough courage and try it before hand, Visual MML)
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse
  • “GIF recorder” (so I can post gameplay during the compo): LICEcap
  • Beverage: COFFEE!! (maybe some green tea, too)

I’ve took part of some previous LDs but I’m still not quite happy with the results achieved. Most of the time I’d hit a nasty bug or would spend time uselessly and the final game suffered from that. This time I’ll try to make a simple but fun game (and definitely  not a puzzle! xD).

That’s it for now. I’ll see if I make quick warmup game before the end of the day. See you guys soon, and let’s have a great jam! 😀

Looks like i’m in for the first time

I’ve been looking at ludum dare for a while since i started studying game development in school. This weekend it’s finally being held during a weekend I can participate in :)

My setup is as follows:

Editor: Visual Studio 2010 express

Language: C#

Base code: XNA

Art: Paint.NET or GIMP, haven’t chosen yet, and I’ll probably use some sprite animator as well.

Audio/Music: No idea yet..

I hope the theme is interesting and can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. I have only finished two games before but none of them had this tight of a deadline. It’s going to be fun to see how this goes 😀

This’ll be my second LD. Last time I went with a home-brewed js framework, but this time round I’ll be using Unity & Blender.

I’m hoping to make a game that utilises the Leap Motion. That’ll limit it’s playability in the ranking stage, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to play around with for a while.

Warmup Weekend!

So the warm-up weekend has started! This weekend I’m creating a little tile based game to try a few things I usually have trouble with, and also try a few things I’ve never done before.

Here’s what I’m going to be practicing:

  • Collision Detection
  • Keeping code clean and organized!

Here’s what I’m going to try which I’ve never done before:

  • Pathfinding
  • NPC’s – both passive and agressive.

And here’s the tools I’m using (these are the same as what I will be using for the compo):

  • Language: Java
  • Framework: LibGDX
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: GIMP
  • Sound: SFXR
  • Music: Autotracker-c
  • Food: Whatever I feel like
  • Drink: Water and energy drinks.

I’m starting simple

… it’s time to get my mind out of the workplace.

tools

For me this really is a chance to warm up before the workout.  Time to pull out the old tools and give them all a good stretch.  Starting with some forms of creativity that I don’t find much opportunity to apply at my day job.

I am jamming

It is my second time joining the fun! Since my wife is have her birthday in the same weekend, I will be doing the jam. I am going to use Cocos2d-X and thinking of making the game for the Ouya. The last time I had a great time and I am sure I will have a great time again this jam. My goal is to do a better job then my first jam.

I wish you all a great time doing the Ludum Dare and I will enjoy playing your game when it is done!

Just a small addition to my original supplies list:

Dual caffeine/water source: Dr. Pepper
Food-like substance: Instant ramen, sheer force of will.
Music: Rainbow, Kansas, Saga, the 1982 Broadway production of Sweeney Todd, Les Mis 10th anniversary
Clothing: Labcoat (For the psychological benefit), pants optional.
Furniture: Exercise ball, for sitting. Staves off back pain for a good while.
Additional tech: second monitor so I can keep an eye on the IRC, 3DS (game of choice: Fire Emblem: Awakening) for power-breaking.
