Finished CATastrophe

So hi guys. Anybody crave for some cats and space?

CATS

7 hours left

Although I am not overly thrilled with my game I am happy to be at the point of bug fixing and adding start screens etc and not rushing to add content. I only have three levels but I am really pleased with the last one. Hope everyones games are coming along well.

The Chronicle of MMO God

We did many things on this Ludum Dare, I remember having to text Isaac about the theme only to find that he only just got up from bed. An hour later we started discussing about our game on what it should be like. Isaac wanted to make a story-based game like what we did previously. I was alright with it at first but then we decided to match up 20 keywords for ideas. It didn’t work. AT ALL. So I started looking for ideas.

When suddenly, I saw a game, where you just click cookies. I told Isaac about it but he was skeptical at first. The moment he just clicked the cookie, he couldn’t stop for some reason. In fact both of us couldn’t stop. This had to be our idea. Isaac didn’t like it at first as well but he went along with it. Soon we were on our way. We started with a transit system across universes. Then it felt too cliche. We then thought about an alternate God sending microorganisms to other planets. Then eventually I had the greatest idea. Why not an MMO tycoon. Soon the both of us agreed to this then BAM we are going full speed.

Soon we sort of got bored so Isaac started thinking about nonsensical ways of making this work. Therefore, the illogical MMO crystal was born. Yipee! Eventually our game was finished under 2 days and there you go! MMOGOD 😀

Some pics:

You start off by clicking the Crystal with your own mouse.

As the game progresses, you don’t really need to click them any more thanks to the upgrades.

Oh and btw, Isaac is still clicking the cookie as we speak. He even made a macro for it.

Milestone 6

Okay, now I’m making a little more progress. I’m made the planets all dynamic including the links between planets.  The other familiar only moves randomly right now.  So next up is getting them to attack and level progression.

  1. Setup fission_engine
  2. Get a basic UI started
  3. Add links between planets
  4. Add ‘familiars’ and ‘witches’
  5. Show where ‘familiars’ are
  6. Add turns
  7. Add actions that a ‘familiar’ will take
  8. Change karma and powers based on actions
  9. Show which planets a ‘witch’ is on
  10. Add simple AI
  11. Add more planets and arrange the planets better
  12. Add next level condition
  13. Add lose condition
  14. Add Defend and for* commands
  15. Add win condition
  16. Make the lines between planets more obvious
  17. Planet textures
  18. Make double clicking take you to that planet
  19. Bug Fixes

Schizoscreenia

Hay people! I started making a game some 3 hours ago (I actually heard there is LD going on last night). I had an idea about the failed V-sync screen tearing messing up your movements, and you’d have to reassemble the tearing to “connect the worlds”. Actually, the reason why I started making it is that I thought – how come no one came up with the name “Schizoscreenia” (schizo = torn, tearing), and it would’ve been a cool name for a game =) Well… I hope I manage to finish it.

You can try out the “tech preview” HERE

Use SPACE to see/unsee camera field differences, you can also move the red square around with arrows

I am also streaming my progress on http://www.twitch.tv/nothke

A Progress thingy…

I have just got back in from visiting friends for the day…damn socialising. I have managed to fit in a bit of development in the mornings, but not much. Anyway here’s a screenshot..

Yeah maybe the rubbis…original art will change but hey, i dunno, but anyway forward!!

The Final Frontier

So, after an all-nighter and overall way too much time and effort considering it’s just a fancy version of Dope Wars, the game is playable. It was two hours ago actually, but I took a much needed break.

WealthOfStations

What next? Music? Add some more features to try and make it actually fun? Just submit it and go to sleep? I’ll take a shot at the former, it seems like the most sure thing, then maybe the features.  Sleep can wait when I’ve already come this far.

Silent Skies – Making the cut

Well, it’s been a hectic 2 days and I’ve nearly got something I could call a “Game”. At least, at the moment it has no failure states (or win states) – so I guess TotalBiscuit wouldn’t agree that it’s a game in that respect.

One hurdle I’ve come across is thanks to the engine I decided to make the game in. Unity. The 4.6 Beta. Which – and this would be obvious if I thought about it – requires the beta web player in order to play any web builds.

So when it’s done I’ll be putting up both a Web Build (for those with 4.6) and Windows/OSX/Linux executables for those without.

Another hurdle I found was cutting things for time. 48 hours isn’t that much and I had a lot of ideas for this game. The first thing to go was having a crew. Originally I’d had the idea that you’d only get the mutiny ending if your crew hates you. You’d have a Chief Engineer, a Chief Security, Chief Medical and your First Officer. Each event would affect them differently and each one would have a random personality assigned at the start.

It’s one of the ideas I’d like to implement later on once the Jam is over.

Another idea was having Events occur when you reach a destination. It would make the other planets on your way actually useful. As it stands you have all those planets out there, and the Trojan stations, but they don’t do anything. If time permits later in the Jam I might quickly put some dirty ones in.

Another idea was difficulty levels. Having different missions and such. As it stands you get a random destination, with missions you’d choose beforehand. You’d have faster/slower ships, with more or less population aboard. Different starting rates for unrest/illness/hunger etc, and even different starting positions. You might have to evacuate a dying colony, or ferry prisoners (the original intention was for Neptune’s prison colony to be this)

Anyway. Back to work. I need to put in the Game Over screen.

In fact this is the game final quality !

At first I tried to simply focus myself on a classic WTF game but I quickly bored myself turning around with stereotypes. When suddenly I found The thing, a game, with only cliché !

playerAnd here comes “She”. The all mighty and lovely Viking warrior, with a huge breast and a magic bow that throws fireballs (and other things).

You must help her to protect her igloo in antarctica against bad kamikaze villains.

Coming soon !

Won’t finish

This really sucks. This is the first LD I have been in where I won’t be able to post anything. I have a somewhat running game engine, but there is no content, and the spaghetti code makes working on it a pain in the ass. So I prefer to leave my liver healthy and save me some anger against buggy code instead of pushing for a crappy game.

I will naybe make a micro game in the time remaining for the jam, that would at least end the thing on a high note.

Here is a screen of the project. Basically, it’s an adventure game where you find a phone on the street and have to discover what happened to the owner by calling a few numbers. I thought it was simple to implement, but I underestimated my ability to complicate stuff out. I still think it was a neat idea, might pick it up again if I find the strenght of fighting the code.

Rapid fire shooting? An awesome game as well! If you keep developing it it will be great!

It looks as if you were going for fireballs but I like the “flaming pillar of doom” thing they have going. Throwing those at the green pill thing was quite fun.

[LD30] Close to quit.

So, I’ve tried making the game I wanted. Turns out it’s more complicated than expected. What I can do with it is not a game, not even a “thing”. I wanted full point & click, with a little story, different actions, crafting. I can’t do it, not in that amount of time, being upset and without coffee for days. At the moment, there’s no story (so the theme is really vague without it), no crafting (it’s automatic) and you just have to click on 6 object to finish the game in like… 10 sec.

I don’t know if I’m gonna quit or not… yet. But if I submit this, it will be really bad. I’m ashamed of it, it’s not even a proper game.

We’ve all been there, but submit, everyone understands the issues with time and life stuff.

Progress 5: Demo time!

I have a submittable version of my game finished and I’d like to hear as many thoughts as possible now that I can still change stuff. Note that the full story is already in the game and all that needs to be added is more puzzles, so huge SPOILER ALERT.

I can’t seem to post any links, so click on my name which will take you to my submition page, I believe, the demo is over there.

Little over 6 hours left!

Is it simply coincidence that the compo ends right when the last episode of True Blood starts?  Kind of convenient to say the least; or in my case inconvenient!  I need to code my ass off to get something playable before the deadline.  I assure you, the “finished” product will “end” with a “To Be Continued”.  There’s no way I can implement all of what I want to do in this game before the deadline, but I will try to at least submit something for voting.  No fun in submitting nothing, right?

Feelin’ good

Finally a LD where I feel like I might finish in comfortable time!  Quite pleased with my arcadey planet vs. planet fighting game :)
