Submission Hour?

What is “Submission Hour“? (Sorry, this is my first LD)

Just asking because I have been trying and failing to get my game uploaded to GameJolt for about 30 minutes now. :/
Does this mean I’m out of LD compo?
Every time I try to set up a new game it just puts me back on the dashboard page, with no new game profile to add distributions to.

—–Edit:
Well, I figured out the problem with uploading to GameJolt.
As I suspected I was doing something derpy, but it took me until now to figure out what it was.

I kept forgetting to set one of the fields that I thought was optional. I didn’t realize it because rather than indicating that I’d missed a required field, the form just sent me back to the dashboard. And as you can imagine the closer time got to running out the less I noticed any details. :)

As far as I know the submission hour is the Legendary 49th Hour Lurking In The Depths Of Time (LFNHLITDOT in short) that allows participant to upload their last minute fixes or deal with uploading troubles. At least that’s what I believe it is. I might have crossed the border by a bunch of seconds myself, so such hour is/would be a blessing. ^^”

Issues uploading Screenshots?

Does anybody know if there are restrictions on what the file size or dimensions a screenshot should have in order to be uploaded on a submission page? I have a few 1600×900 fullscreen shots but none of them seem to upload properly. Could it be a result of the infamous server load that happens here at the start and end of competitions?

I forget if it’s an under 2 MB thing (1MB?). I know GIFs don’t seem to work, and I heard someone was having trouble with JPGs. Try PNG.

Servers

The first night, since theme annuncied, here in Spain is really late, 2:30 am approx, i spent like 8h creating a mongodb server with php api rest to realise next day that it would take another two days to be implemented.
So, I moved to appwarp server for Unity for the first time after analyze all the other options like photon cloud, smartfoxserver etc
The demo was working, i added all the assets, and did some coding all the day until now, barely sleeped, the project got corrupted in a physics online loop in the editor and i was in pain, lucky me i recovered the files this morning and now the only part left is to finish some online mechanics and scores ,etc
Hud is done, also character motor and cool rendering with mirroringimage fx.

All done!

I’ve finished my submission, Translation Points.

comp2

I had some last minute deployment issues that ate into my testing time, but I think its at least reasonably polished. Reasonably.

I’ll see if I can get together a post mortem later.

Post before sleep…

I made it!

Finally after two days of hard work, my game is done. Well there are lots of things that I’d like to have implemented, but time’s up!

Now if you excuse me, I really need some sleep, tomorrow I have plenty of games to test :)

Oh joy!

I tried to make the game a puzzle-platformer, but I think it turned more into a platformer than that.  Either way, enjoy my 48-hours work to create a game with no storyline!  It turned out to be a very simple game, though a lot more can be added to it really easily.

Below expectations =( The last hour was just smashing workable stuff into the code, had no courage to risk at all, and building the poor level =( .. Even the debug colors are still there.. But hey, I made it, my first Ludum Dare entry =)

Beautiful!

Postmortem of my First game ever!

Things I regret:

This being my first game.

This being my first ludum dare.

Forgetting to eat on the first day.

Almost quitting 3 times.

Not sleeping at all! -Lies, I past out on the chair for 20 mins.

Things I don’t regret:

Not sleeping at all! -Lies, I past out on the chair for 20 mins.

So without further delay, I hereby present to you, the cause of this day’s pains and troubles, my first game, my first LD entry, DISCONNECTED WORLDS!

And I’m done!

My first Ludum Dare game is finished, and I’m surprisingly happy with the results. I’m very new to the Unity enginge, but it is serving me well.

It’s funny how I’ve been thinking about the maps, wanting to make them almost all the way through the competition, but I didn’t feel ready to create them until the last few hours. I hope you will enjoy the game as much as I did making it!

Looks like this website is missing some JS escape things (not really my division). The code creates this amazing button 😀

DISPARATE all done and ready to rock!

First Ludum Dare complete!  WOOHOO!  Still didn’t have the whole 48 hours for this but did the best with what I had.  I did have a single player mode in but had to yank that out at the last minute.

Hope you all enjoy!

And…submitted

DINO BOLT is over here if you want to give it a whirl. As usual, time just evaporates. Even for a simple game I just ran out of time. I’m pretty happy with the overall package and level of polish though.

Oh hey it’s the deadline I should stop

That was me 30 minutes ago. Anyway now the game is submitted. What a relief. Here’s the link for the game if anyone’s interested.

All in all I think I’m fairly satisfied, though the game idea was a bit too grand to fully complete in 2 days. I was able to get the main game mechanics working, but I didn’t have enough time to draw more variations in the art or add any music/sound, so the game is a bit bland right now. There also isn’t a tutorial and the game is confusing as hell. Oh well. I did add a readme but who reads those these days.

For anyone that has no idea what this game is, it’s a “befriend people cause you’re a penguin that wants to become a pharaoh” game. You basically shove fish down people’s throats hoping they’ll like you. However it’s significantly harder to befriend someone that’s already popular, so you have to climb your way up.

I actually like the game quite a bit, though currently it’s not very player friendly. I’ll probably rework it a bit and release it later with a bunch of other stuff added. Also clean up the code. Oh god the code.

Friendly Baubles Post-Mortem

Whew! Well, done. Just by a nose.

Things I wanted to do but didn’t have time for:

  • More sprite graphics for the various characters (had to slap ugly coloring on repeated ones, to make them distinguishable)
  • Snazzy title screen and/or win graphic
  • More variety of paths in the worlds – currently there’s just world 0, world 1, and the other three worlds’ “friends” all travel the same paths from world 1.

Things I’m proud of accomplishing:

  • Learned a facility with CreateJS
  • A little background music (even if it’s just something I threw together in a few minutes’ recording time)
  • Somewhat sophisticated path-traveling (that I didn’t get to take much advantage of)
  • The few graphics I managed to get finished.
  • Fixed some broken understandings of how prototyping works in JavaScript.

Hopefully I can be much faster next time, now that I’m more comfortable with the tools.

I need to get more familiar with Inkscape’s oddities and quirks, or start using a better replacement. Using it on a Mac instead of Linux also cost me the ability to make some slightly nicer-looking fudged graphics for the end there (using Color Filters instead of wholesale replacing all fill colors on various objects would’ve been nice).

There are some minor quirks with how my version of CreateJS is working. Hopefully I’ll remember and adjust my design accordingly for next time.

Anyway, I did what I set out to, and I had fun doing it. It was a good way to force me to learn the tech better, so hopefully I’ll leverage that to make more games just for fun. :)

My creation is called GalactiTrader. You can play/rate it here.

I even managed to make a little tutorial video for how to play it:

Good gaming everyone!

First Ludum Dare in the Bag!

Whew!  What a weekend.  I started at 9 pm EST Friday evening and didn’t sleep until around 12:30 PM Saturday afternoon.  I tried to sleep Friday night, but my brain was in work mode, so I gave in and worked through the night.  So after 6 hours of sleep Saturday afternoon, I worked pretty much non stop until now, just before 9 pm Sunday evening.  Yeah, I just made a game in 48 hours, only sleeping 6 of those 48 hours.  I’m going to sleep like a rock tonight!

This was my first Ludum Dare comp, so I wasn’t sure what to expect or how it would go.  Besides being extremely tired, I had a great weekend.  It might be my lack of sleep delirium, but I feel my game is pretty fun.  I’d post a screenshot, but unfortunately it looks like I’m not able to (maybe because this is my first post).  I’m too tired to worry about it now.

Anyway, the inspiration of this game was Quill18’s entry from the last LD, Drill18.  I enjoyed his entry and thought “how cool would it be to be able to mine all kinds of different planets?”  It just so happens that the theme “Connected Worlds” fit that perfectly.  I took the idea and ran with it and the result is, to me at least, a ton of fun!  I hope you will try it out and please let me know what you think.  I’m open to constructive criticism!  I don’t do much game development, so I’ve still got a lot to learn.

Thanks for reading and thanks for playing my game!

Not ideal finish

So I was like an hour or two short to add some actual levels other than tutorial. Thats’s a shame, but then I’m still glad I made something that works. Check it out, will you?

ingame2

Now I’m going to bed. Tomorrow will be better.

Tags: finished, not really

Still some bits to add, like sound effects a scoring system and one more effect, so I’ll take another crack at it tomorrow, but here’s what I’ve got so far. It’s a side-scrolling shooter, WASD or cursors to move, Ctrl or LMB to shoot.
