LD32 April 17–20, 2015

I’m in

Doing the game jam. Hope I can get something done. Last time was not even close to finished but I am a little bit more skilled this time around.

Tools to be used.

Unreal engine 4

Gimp & Inkscape

Blender

Audacity

Good luck to all.

Looking for a programmer

Hello!

So I’ve had an idea. My background is in programming, but since I want to focus on the art side this time, why not team up with a programmer?

My art skills are not the best but pretty solid. So if you are a good programmer using Unity3D who just wants to code and not worry about art and doesn’t mind it if the art is not extremely nice looking, shoot me a message(Email: florian.ram@gmail.com).

Here’s a link to my last LD entry where I only spent a small amount of time on the art: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=27145

Have a nice day!

I am in.

Time to make something convoluted!
i am going to switch i up this time around,  3D space and multiplayer, which i do not usually do. :)

What could possibly go wrong?!

Also i might do the jam instead this time around to see how much polish i can throw at it, but it is most likely going to depend on how much time i have left in the end. :)

Second LD

This time doing something different – I am planning to bring my kids and some of their friends into the mix! Not sure if it is madness or genius… So targeting the jam not the compo.

I will give them a brief intro to programming in Kodu and then help them make some games with it based on the theme. For my youngest I will be doing the programming for her so will probably not be using Kodu for that, undecided between MonoGame/Cocossharp, SuperPowers or Phaser.

Most of the kids will probably only participate on Saturday – I may try to polish what I create (if it seems worth it) on Sunday & Monday, we will see what happens.

Every so often you get a jam game that’s obviously a parent/kids collaboration and they’re more often than not completely adorable and probably amazingly good fun to actually make.

I’m in LD32

Not really my first Ludum Dare, but the other times failed due to a lack of drive and skill. I don’t know if this will go the same way, if I hit a wall, I’ll try to break on through to the other side for the sake of the compo.

Tools:

  • Sublime Text 3 (for hot HTML5, cool CSS3 and jubilant Javascript)
  • Google Chrome (for devilishly debugging and tentatively testing jaunty Javascript)
  • GIMP (for groovy graphics)
  • BFXR (for audacious audio)
  • Mozilla Web API Reference (for reckless reference)

This also gives me an excuse to listen to some psychedelic bands for 48 hours which may well affect what I end up producing. Some bands currently on the playlist, for those very few who may be interested:

  • Led Zeppelin
  • King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
  • The Black Angels
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Cream
  • Iron Butterfly
  • Electric Wizard
  • The Beatles
  • Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
  • Bob Dylan
  • Kyuss
  • Fu Manchu
  • and more…

Good luck to everyone participating, and have fun!

Battle Stations Prepared, We are In

ld32_setup_station_1For the 32nd LudumDare I have upgraded the battle stations, a new office chair for those long sessions at the keyboard should help keep energy high and focused on the game.  Also a new improvement to the ol’ PC, a mechanical keyboard.  Something I’ve been hoping to upgrade to for a very long time.  Now I get to FEEL the keys being pressed, and my neighbor will hear me typing*.

My girlfriend has decided to attempt to help me again this LudumDare, so we will jump into the JAM side of things and Dizzy will do the art.  If it comes out anything like our LD27 entry, Feeding Time! then I know it will look good.  We have learned from our mistakes and will not save level design to the very end, and more importantly will get feedback a few times through-out the weekend to figure out what is working and what is not.

ld32_setup_station_2

What we will be using …

  • C++, (XCode and VisualStudio)
  • TurtleBrains, Game Development Framework
  • InkScape
  • Paint.NET (for those few pixel edits)
  • BFXR / SFXR
  • RescueTime (to track where time went)
  • PizzaHut, (planned food delivery)
  • Neighborhood, (two walks a days for energy recovery)

I’m in~!

5th LD for me. I’ll be doing the 48hr compo this time because I can’t afford to jam until monday.

Stuff that I will use:

Game Engine: Stencyl.

Art Assets: Photoshop/Illustrator.

Music: MAGIX, FL studio or other chiptune softwares.

SFX: Probably sfxr/bfxr.

Screencast: Camtasia Studio.

and lots of sweet drinks and caffeine!

Goodluck and have fun everyone! :)

Can I use SketchUp for modeling???

I am in for #32.

I was wondering, can I make use of Google Sketchup for making models for my game?

Also, can one use the preset fill patterns in GIMP?

I will be using:

  • Engine: jMonkeyEngine3
  • Sound: bfxr and my own voice
  • Images: GIMP
  • Modeling: Blender3D and maybe Sketchup
  • Food: What ever is in the house
  • Coffee: Nespresso

Very excited…

I think the rules pages has been updated to really explain this. Also, any SW tools that you are licensed to use / own should be valid to use to create the assets.

Wow, thanks for your input.

This is great news. See you all Friday.

I am in!

This is my 6th attempt in joining Ludum Dare, and hopefully it would be my 4th successful one. I’ve kept in mind the reasons as to why I wasn’t able to submit for the previous failed attempts. Here’s hoping to a successful Ludum Dare!

Engine: HaxePunk, or maybe OpenFL.

Art: Paint.NET, or maybe even procedurally generated ones (ie. simple quads)

Music: Pixitracker

SFX: Bfxr

I really hope I get to submit something this time. It’s been a long time since I’ve made my last game, and I’m read to give it all I’ve got!

I’m back

It’s been a while since I finished a Ludum Dare. Had to quit half way at some due to broken computers or fatigue. Hope this one will go smoothly. It’s good to be back!

Engine : Unity 5

Art : Photoshop CS6

SFX and Music : Improvised on the spot (FX probably Bfxr).

Obligatory “I’m in”

Going to participate for the third time!

I will use either C# with Monogame (in case I want performance to be a bit more reliable), or HTML5 + Javascript. I hope do a quick web port if I decide to use C#.

Also, Google Code Jam round A starts almost at the same time, so excitement for ludum dare will totaly ruin my results 😀

Have fun everyone!

Maybe in…

Will be testing out the excellent Luxe engine, works good even if it’s in alpha. (Join the Gitter chat)!

Having used various frameworks and Unity for a couple of times – it is exciting to try something new, and I love Haxe.

That is – IF I have time… that is the biggest question.

Free Jam music

I’ll be taking part in the Compo this time again, having previously done Hot Diggity (28) and Good News Delivery (29), but thought I’d do a little warmup and make some jam-friendly assets for folk.  Particularly on the music side, just for anyone who needs it.

I’ll be updating this post with whatever I come up.  Basically they’re free to use, edit, mix, chop, whatever for any of yer jam entries.  They’re presented in .ogg format and designed to loop. Most audio software should be able to handle converting ’em to whatever you need.

I’m IN!

The engine I’ll probably be using:

https://github.com/bubblewrap-engine/

We’re in, once again;

It’s that time again. Mystery Meat is in for our second Ludum Dare as a team.

In

Yup.

Engine: Unity 5
Language: C#
Art: Inkscape, GIMP, Blender
Audio: GarageBand, Audacity, SFXR
Target platforms: Windows, Mac, Web

Theme I want to win: Among the stars OR There is no right

Theme Theme Themes

The current front runners so far:

Companion

This seems pretty open, and any old random game people make wouldn’t automatically fit this theme (unlike, say, Entire Game On A Single Screen where you have to actually go out of your way to *not* make a game that fits this). I think this may hit the magic sweet spot between specific and vague, open and narrow and generally pretty acceptable for most types of game devs?

Deeper and deeper

My first thought was that this was too similar to Beneath the Surface but “Deeper and Deeper” suggests progress and movement, whereas Beneath was about revealing hidden worlds. I guess we’d end up seeing an awful lot of digging and diving games, and lots of strategy games involving drilling and mining, which is pretty much what we got for Beneath the Surface so.. I kinda hope this isn’t the winning theme just because, ugh, digging in mud again? Please no.

Adapt To Survive

At first I thought, “wouldn’t every single game fit this theme?” but now I think that it’s actually rather a difficult theme to do justice to – it sort of suggests power ups. Metroidvania games, RPGs, strategy etc. It’s probably a good theme for interactive fiction too but people who enjoy making single screen twitch reflex games or just generally single-mechanic games may find this theme pushes them well out of their comfort zone. Or you just take any game and add some flavour text that says “You need to adapt (by learning how to play this game) in order to survive” and voila.

However, traditionally the theme I dread the most is usually the one that gets picked so I’m going to call it: The theme for LD32 is going to be Adapt to Survive.

Among The Stars

Again, initial thought was “omg 3000 space games”, which will almost certainly be the case… but “stars” can also mean “celebrities” so we may have some funny games involving David Hasselhoff. It’s definitely the most restrictive in terms of setting, but completely open in terms of genre and mechanics. Not very inspiring, though, unless you think very laterally.

Completely agree with you on all these points. Really looking for companion as the theme here as it’s so strong. Adapt to survive will be do-able too but the other two are tough and don’t feel like they’re going to produce a good range of games.

Ludum Dare 32: pre-nativatus

The strategy:

GO BIG OR GO HOME. Unless the voted theme prevents me from making a horribly ambitious, huge game, I will do so. Lots of mechanics, features, buttons, effects, etc. It will be horribly unpolished, terribly unbalanced, borderline unplayable, break most of game theory, will have bad graphics, bad sound, etc. In other words, it will perform horribly in every single category games are rated on here. But it will be big, and massive and I will ignore the fact half of it is held together with little more than strings and a flour-water home made glue.

That’s just the way I like to approach Ludum Dare. It’s not something I recommend anyone else does if they care about the final score, but it’s just how I like to do LD in particular.

The technology:

While I’ve been wanting to learn Unreal and desperately need an excuse to do so, I think I’ll be sticking with Unity for this LD. Learning new technologies in 48 hours tends to be a bad idea.

Engine: Unity with C#
Graphics: Inkscape
Models: UNITY CUBES! (and Blender for triangles)
Sound: LMMS

The goal:

So I really don’t care about the score at the end as LD’s scoring is biased in favour of short, single-mechanic, 2D, pretty, polished games. That’s not a complaint about LD, just an observation, and it’s just not the way I like to approach LD. Last time I placed in 599th place, even though many people described my game as “impressive for 48 hours”. So yeah. While placing somewhere in the 400 – 600 range in the overall category would be great, I won’t be disappointed if that does not happen.

My actual goal is to simply make as much functional, properly working stuff as possible in the 48 hours we have available. It’s an exercise of “how much bug free code can I write without an ability to do code revisions and rewrites in this short time span.”. Last LD it was a lot, this time it should be more! 😀

I however do reserve the right to change the goal, expectations, strategy and technology as the pool of likely themes becomes smaller and once the actual theme is announced.

Good luck to everyone!

I’m in!

I’ll use my standard tool set

Language: C++, my base code can be found here.

IDE: Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition.

Libraries: FLTK, OpenGL, OpenAL, mpg123.

For GFX: MSPaint, Gimp.

For SFX: PXTone, sfxr/Bfxr.

Possible I’ll use Tiled Editor and Bosca Seoil.

Also it’s possible (depending on the theme) I’ll drop all this and will use JS+HTML5+Canvas and will write all code from scratch. Unfortunately I’ll be a bit busy this weekend (because of really unexpected events), so this 48 hour compo actually will be 8-10 hours compo for me. But I hope I’ll have enough of time to make something minimalistic.

BTW, I’ve really improved my game from LD31 The Legend of Adlez: Knil’s Adventure. There is a small gameplay video:

Ludum Dare page of the game is here.
