My first Ludum Dare

Hi Everyone,

This will be my first attempt, and I’m not even sure I’ll have enough free time to finish anything substantial, or even interesting.

However… thanks to such a wonderful bunch of motivated folks such as yourselves helping to show the way, I’m in!  I’m going for it!

Good Luck All!

p.s.  When is precise time (EST) of Theme announcement/start?

Yet Another First Ludum Darer

I am not very good at this but I’ll see if I can make something.

Haven’t really made any real games, just prototypes but I guess that’s good enough!

Uh I’ll be using C++ with SFML and with fancy hand drawn art.

Hello

Hi all, i am first time here. I come from Mother Russia. Want to try LD!

Jumping on the bandwagon…

Well, since everyone’s saying what they’re going to do and that they are participating, and since I have no personality of my own, I’m going to do the same…

Going to use the same framework of last time:

– D3D9 initialization
– 2d graphics system (sprites and camera system)
– Texture manager (for resource cleanup, etc)
– 3d system (FFP based, lights, meshes, camera)
– 3ds reader (in case I want to go 3d this time, since I model much better than I draw)
– Application/Screen document model

And that’s it, I think…

You can download it and use it at will: http://clientes.netvisao.pt/~dandrade/Framework_LD15.rar

Going to use the same tools as always: VC2008, D3D9, sfxr, Photoshop, 3d Studio, Chronolapse for the timelapse video… Still don’t know what I’ll use for the music, but I’ll think of something…

Themes look scary… If it’s Twilight Fandom, I’ll throw the towel right away… :\

Anyway, good luck everyone, have fun and catch you in some hours!

Fixed Function Pipeline… This is compared to a shader-driven pipeline, where you have to tell the card what to do at each stage.

People are posting because technically you’re supposed to post what you’re using, as well as access to any basecode before the compo starts. Lately it’s gotten so big that no one really goes and checks out other people’s code anymore though ^__^.

NyanNyanKoneko Reporting for Duty!

I’m back!

Anyway, I’m in a bit of a bind. I don’t have any place to  host my images or files. I signed up for free hosting but it needs to be “approved” first. I have no idea how long that’s going to take.

I know I can use a site like tinypic to upload screenshots, but I don’t know of any file-hosting service I like. Well, if it’s Sunday and I still don’t have a web site, I’ll just have to figure something out.

Anyway, I look forward to this competition. I’m going to use Game Maker instead of C# and XNA as I did last time. I think I’ll keep it simple, I don’t want to engage in any any all-night programming fests. You see, I don’t even have a desk, so I have to hunch over my laptop which hurts my back. I’ll still make something fun though.

I’m glad to be back in the game-programming spirit. Everyone, do your best, and I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

I’ve found that laying on a couch with the laptop on the stomach works pretty well.

No couch either. I’m stuck in something similar to a jail cell, although I’m not in jail or anything. 😉

Ask and ye shall receive — I’ll host your stuff, provided it’s not *ludicrously* huge.

In the past many have posted basecodes before compo. I also used some sort of basecode, which has usually been just a dump of the very basic stuff from my previous entry (available for anybody already), maybe doing some small changes every time. Sometimes I have done this basecode extraction stuff during the compo and sometimes a little bit beforehand.

Since many have posted their basecodes separately, I decided to make my take on it available for you all in a zip file as well. Once again this is just a slightly modified dump of the base stuff from my last entry. :)

Get a little bit of more info and a link to the zip file here:

Uncertain

I’ve had a cold for a while and my brother might want to do something tomorrow, so I’m not sure how much I will be able to participate.  If I do, I’m not sure if I want to try to use the Flex3 compiler for a Flash game (which will require some learning as I had not used it yet) or simply use PyGame (which I am already very familiar with, but not able to make Windows executables as I only have access to Linux.)

Just ask in IRC. Several people use py2exe.
11. Dec 2009 · 19:29 UTC
Thanks, I guess I could simply ask if anyone is willing to py2exe my game if I manage to finish something.

powered by slugs

My Lua game engine thing: I call it “slug” [update: hit the slug tag for newer versions]

A bit rough around the edges and messy code, but it seems to work for what it does.  (Here’s a readme.)

That’s great. 😀

No, no, no. You’ve got it all wrong! The shower is the best place in the world for brainstorming! That is why I have scheduled a shower for tomorrow morning after I’ve checked the theme. 😉

pekuja’s right, I’m putting off showering until the theme is declared on purpose
11. Dec 2009 · 23:52 UTC
Well, yes. I know I have stated in the past that the shower is a great place to brainstorm. I’ve solved a few problems with soap in my eyes. Don’t under estimate the power of the toilet either.

I return!

Well, I participated in LD 12 (minimalist), and I come back. Probably nobody remembers me, but I made a Flash game, and now I evolved: Pygame. I hope the theme doesn’t require too much graphics ability ^^.

I’m glad to be here another time. This contest is AWESOME.

Good luck!

Last Minute Plan Revisions

As is my way, I’m going to sketch out one last set of speculations about my game.

Roguelike’s in the garbage. Not workable in two days. Heck, I’d need at least a week of Ideal Programming Time.

Instead, I’m doing what I’ve always done best: Action!

I’m planning on something fairly fast-paced that increases the challenge gradually. If I have time, it’ll have multiple difficulty modes.

C++ will be my language of choice. SDL, my library. I’ll be porting to Windows myself after I’m finished coding. If I’m ahead of schedule (And I’m saying a little prayer to Hephaestus tonight), then I’ll create a port to allow any Windows users with some spare time to try it.

I’ve been monkeying around with C++ since the last compo, and I think I’ve become much, much more efficient with it. At the very least, I’m going about as fast as I usually do in Python. Should prove to be an asset.

I’m not sure about the genre. It could be anything, except maybe a top-down run and gun. That wasn’t fun to code. At all. Since the themes are largely about the end of the world (Or the time after that), it might be a survival brawler. Against zombies. Or maybe a robot fighting to survive while being attacked by mutant humans.

And if “Twilight Fandom” comes up, you’ll be beating the snot out of angsty vampires.

So…

Here’s hoping.

— Mr., Dude

Spydog is in the (Dog)House!

Greetings everyone. *waves at the crowd*

I am new to Ludum Dare, I make games with Game Maker, and I plan to make something for LD16. I think that this is going to be a lot of fun, and with the guidance of the most incredible Designer of all time, I’m gonna try to design an awesome game.

Now…ahem… Let’s do this thing!

Let’s not be hasty

No ideas = no problem. I got my newest version of Flixel, some cheap beer, and a whole lot of time this weekend to churn something out. This time I will be recording a timelapse thanks to Keeyai’s awesome Chronolapse. And I’ll try to keep people updated on progress.

So it’s good to go tonight. Let’s rock!

Hey, you should practice with the new Flixel. They’ve changed a bunch of things from 1.25. No more FlxArray and they also changed some of the collision functions and how keys are accessed.

Excitement!

Yay! So excited for this weekend. I will be making my entry in Flash.

Screencap TimeLapse is setup and ready to go so I’ll be able to upload a video after the event.

Blog updates will hit www.refrag.com first and I hope to cross-post here.

I’ll also be webcam live broadcasting via Ustream here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ludum-dare-16—48hr-game-making

Best of  luck to everyone!

compo rocks

athanazio workspace ld16

This is not my first time, and I hope is not the last 😛

Planning to use on this one the current beta version of  my framework that I started on LD15, that was made in Java, meanwhile I add Lua language to the mix, and support for android …  here is the link for this alpha version http://jaga.athanazio.com/2009/12/alpha-version/

for graphics inkscape and gimp

for the audio  SFXR e audacity

Getting ready…

This is gonna be my third LD. I’m pretty excited and I hope the theme is not gonna be Twilight Fandom.

Here are the tools that I’m going to use:
Compiler: FreePascal 2.4.0rc
Target platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac OS X (and maybe GP2X if I have too much time)
Editor: Komodo Edit
Graphics: Cinema 4D, Gimp
Music: GarageBand
Sound: cfxr (Mac port of sfxr), maybe Audacity

You can download my basecode here: LD16_Basecode (It uses SDL + OpenGL for graphics, SDL_mixer for audio and has support for Lua scripts)

I also wrote a little command-line tool to help creating timelapses on Mac OS X, download it here (32 bit executable for Snow Leopard and source are included). It basically just uses the “screencapture” utility to create a number of images (quite similar to the AppleScript that has been posted here) which then just need to be converted into a video (using iMovie, Window Movie Maker or similar). It should also work on Linux (if scrot is installed), but I haven’t had time to test it.

Newbie here!

Yup, it’s my first LudumDare, and I’m participating with Game Maker.
I hope we’ll can see great games!

Good luck! 😉
